how to raise to a float exponent in bash?

But bash doesn't do floating point numbers
So, you want bc or something similar:
Hmm. Dunno how to do it in bc. Here's how in perl:
$ perl -le 'print 10**0.25'
1.77827941003892
So, in bash:
$ echo $(perl -le 'print 10**0.25')
1.77827941003892
Huh, looks like you need to transform it to get it to work in bc:
$ echo "e(0.25*l(10))" | bc -l
1.77827941003892280121
