@RoryAlsop forgive him... histories about Moriarty makes him anxious

1:16 AM
here we go again…

6 hours later…
7:29 AM
anyone here?

1 hour later…
8:33 AM
@RoryAlsop Sure. No offense intended.
@RoryAlsop Maybe safe. However, my predominant recollection of the UK, after 3 years spent there, was the incredible rudeness and unfriendliness. Of course, it may have been a function of the specific milieu, namely Cambridge. Which might be untypical of the UK as a whole.
When it comes to pure, unadulterated nastiness, my experience is that the British are world champions. Nowhere else I have been even comes close.
@Braiam Huh?

9:14 AM
@FaheemMitha wow... come to Scotland next time. :-)
@FaheemMitha none taken - I was just feeling mildly argumentative last night :-)
@FaheemMitha I just can't see Brits as nasty, compared with most countries. I mean, I know in Scotland we welcome everyone, but England is generally incredibly welcoming. Even Cambridge - I have found it lovely, although I understand the Uni can be very cliquey
@Gilles The Parisians, on the whole, have been the people who have destroyed their stereotype the most.
I expected rudeness and abruptness - and every one was lovely
despite the fact that I know no French language so just spoke in English - with a Scottish accent
I think the rudest folks I have encountered round the world have been those in New York, Delhi and Dubai. But I have also encountered lovely folks in each of those places too
So I reckon it's just who you bump in to

9:28 AM
@RoryAlsop thanks for the feedback. I think it also depends on who you are.

10:59 AM
@RoryAlsop It is very likely relevant that Faheem is Indian. I also found the brits to be polite and welcoming. However, I'm a nice white boy which may have been a point in my favor.

11:57 AM
@terdon Yes, that was quite likely to be relevant. For the record, I'm also nice. Though definitely not white.
And any educated Indian has major, major issues with the British. For obvious reasons. Goes without saying, really.

2 hours later…
2:06 PM
@FaheemMitha Sherlock and Moriarty?

Tim
2:30 PM
"any educated Indian has major, major issues with the British"?

@Tim Sure. Maybe that should be - any educated Indian with sense has major, major issues with the British. Did you have a question?
@Braiam yes, I guessed that was your reference, though Moraity is not such an uncommon name. But I'm missing the context.

@FaheemMitha crime in Scotland

@Braiam Oh, I see. Hmm, is Moriarty a Scottish name then?

Tim
@FaheemMitha what issues?

I had the impression Moriarty was an Irish name. As supported by the WP page for James Moriarty. WP is hardly an authoritative reference, granted.
@Tim I'm not sure if that is a serious question. But, giving the benefit of the doubt, several centuries of rape, mass murder and theft on a staggering scale. Of India, by the British. I grant that not everyone cares about India, but surely the basic are general knowledge?
Of course, India was scarcely the only fortunate recipients of the attentions of the British in this regard. They were busy people.

Tim
2:49 PM
@FaheemMitha Oh, I know a little about the colony history. But from my impressions from the media, India is part of Commonwealth, and there is strong alliance between India and UK

@Tim Not sure what you mean by "strong alliance". I guess the rich and powerful people in the UK talk to the ones in India. And the Commonwealth is a euphemism for a group of victims. Something the UK came up with. I suppose as a species of whitewash, though I don't know the details.
Anyway, if you want to know the history, it is not hard to find stuff about it, though compared to the gravity of the crimes, there is relatively written about it. At least, that is my impression.

Tim
@FaheemMitha: Thanks. it is good for me to know what Indian people actually think about British nowadays.

3:06 PM
@Tim Well, I'm just one Indian person.
That should have been "relatively little written about it".

Q: Xsnow does not work

RichardI have installed the old program xsnow with Apt. This program is supposed to make snow (the type of precipitation) appear on the desktop. However, running the program does nothing except return the following code: Xsnow-1.42resizeable, December 14th 2001 by Rick Jansen (rja@euronet.nl) WWW: http...

May I have an linguistic question?
Which form is correct: "classic example of something" or "classical example"?

@jimmij Not sure what you mean. Can you use it in a sentence?

@FaheemMitha Here is a sentence: unix.stackexchange.com/questions/175656/…
In the meantime I've found this: jakubmarian.com/classic-vs-classical-in-english Very interesting.

@jimmij I'd say the former (as used in that sentence) is more usual/common

@FaheemMitha OK, thanks.
