@slm I disagree on libreoffice. One thing it does markedly less well than Word, to the extent of not being usable for the purpose, is editing Word documents.
which is necessary if you need to collaboratively edit documents and you have no way to influence the format
Also, libreoffice's interface is slightly worse than word, even with that stupid ribbon
but word becomes worse over time while libreoffice stagnates, so in a few years it'll be the same

me, or he's trolling after his problems in physics.se?

@Braiam either he's trolling or it's someone else

slm
@Gilles - the issue with interacting with word docs is why I was pressing for a wholesale change by everyone. That mitigates that issue if not completely eliminating it. We generally don't need to collaborate, when sending a copy of a doc I always tell ppl to send PDFs not doc or docx.

unfortunately my work involves editing a lot of work documents together with people from inside or outside the company

12:17 AM
So does mine now that ppl aren't willing to use LibreOffice 8-)

12:30 AM
Personally, I don't know why more people don't use LaTeX. Or possibly Context.
But I'm always astonished how everyone uses Microsoft's evil garbage and apparently never considers alternatives.
Have they at least published their format now?

slm
@FaheemMitha - does Context have an editor for Linux?

@slm There might be. Would you consider doing it?

slm
@FaheemMitha - I never heard of it

@slm Context, like LaTeX, is a bunch of macros on top of TeX.
ConTeXt is a general-purpose document processor. It is especially suited for structured documents, automated document production, very fine typography, and multi-lingual typesetting. It is based in part on the TeX typesetting system, and uses a document markup language for manuscript preparation. The typographical and automated capabilities of ConTeXt are extensive, including interfaces for handling microtypography, multiple footnotes and footnote classes, and manipulating OpenType fonts and features. Moreover, it offers extensive support for colors, backgrounds, hyperlinks, presentati...

slm
I personally prefer markup languages, but most ppl want an editor, even though styling a doc is something that should be done afterwards, or through the markup

12:34 AM
Supposedly very good, though I have never used it.

slm
My wordpress blog I write up posts in textile

@slm For most people, plain text would be fine 90% of the time.

slm
and we maintain a wiki at work, which I writeup using a variety of markups

@slm Yes, that sounds reasonable. I've used similar things.

slm
@FaheemMitha - I found this via google: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ConTEXT
different

12:36 AM
eg. markdown.
@slm Yes, that's unrelated.
@slm I'm guessing you've never used LaTeX then. For anything non-trivial, that is what I use.
you are probably aware of tex.stackexchange.com

slm
@FaheemMitha - I have, but not for day to day, usually for producing technical documentation

@slm Ah, Ok. Like mathematical stuff, I suppose.
@slm Actually Linux-based systems are really easy to install these days.
Come a long way since 1998, when I started with Red Hat 4 or something.

slm
@FaheemMitha - yeah for engineering related tasks. Mostly analog design documentation. I usually would assist the analog designers since they were less equip. to deal with the markup. I worked in the design automation space, so I was familar with all the tools and how to use them.

@slm I see.

slm
@FaheemMitha - it's not even the same planet as far as I'm concerned. I remember setting up RH4 - even before that. RH4 was a dream compared to the previous versions.
Is there a editor for context

12:41 AM
Actually, it was probably 5.1, judging by the version history on en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Hat_Linux#Version_history
@slm No, it's a markup language. You could use emacs or whatever.
emacs has reasonable support for context i think, though latex support is better.
I think there are a bunch of other editors for tex stuff. there was a question on tex.sx. one sec, i'll see if i can find it
I've only ever used emacs.

slm
I started with the Halloween release of Red Hat

@slm That was pretty early. 1994.
Well, back to bed. Take care, everyone.

slm
@FaheemMitha - yeah I used to go to these computer shows in New York State while attending college. I remember seeing the Red Hat guys there at a booth. They were selling the disk (I think) I can't remember if I actually paid for it or if they gave it to me. I might have paid $1-5 bucks for it.

1:04 AM
@FaheemMitha Markdown! <3

7 hours later…
7:56 AM
@strugee Yes, markdown is good.

\o/

10 hours later…
@Braiam yes
a VM is really the best solution, or a chrooted installation to toy with
he can also use a union mount, but it'll be a pain
or LVM or filesystem snapshots, but again it'll be a pain
if it gets reopened I might answer later tonight

@Gilles if you want to answer, may as well answer his cross-post here:

Q: Sandbox alike solution for linux

Tiago PimentaI wonder if there is a kind of a sandboxing solution for linux, sometimes there is more than one app that is candidate to solve my problems, in that case I want to try all of them to get the one which better fit my needs. Usually I extract .deb files somewhere and export PATH env adding the bin ...

Though he could have at least tried to search for Linux sandbox, there seem to be many many solutions for this.

6:00 PM
wait, you will answer it here? if that's the case maybe we should leave it closed there, so here doesn't get closed here?

@Braiam that's what I thought, since it's already closed on AU and posted here, let's answer here.
Better yet, let's hope the OP realizes that google is a useful tool and that he can search for linux sandbox

@Braiam I don't mind

I'm just trying that it doesn't get closed here for "crossposting" ;)

6:22 PM
@terdon You could tell him. :-)
Maybe he doesn't like search engines.
"a VM would bore me a lot". interesting.

@FaheemMitha I have, and gave him three useful links.

@terdon Yes, so I see. That was very polite of you.

@FaheemMitha That's a language thing, in French for example, that just means "it would annoy me/not be worth the effort"

@terdon ah, I see. Didn't think of that.

@Gilles did you ever get a hat called "Eureka!"? apparently you could have gotten it from your ads guess. blog.stackoverflow.com/2014/01/winter-bash-2013-wrap-up

9:40 PM
@strugee Logan had all but told us what the hat was about. I didn't figure out enough on my own to feel like I could claim the hat

@Gilles oh. that makes sense
