It really should be the one on SO that gets closed since it's OffTopic there anyway.
Also, if anybody wants to hack a quality control userscript into Lance's browser that won't let him post to SE sites with "e.g." anywhere in the post, that would be fine with me.

Q: Mounting multiple img files as single loopback

Oh, I thought I did. Apparently not

@Gilles You did? Did your vote timeout? It's telling me there is one vote and that I've already voted...

I just closed and it's just me and Caleb, so apparently it didn't go through

@Caleb I'm not sure actually. When I posted this message, I'd just checked that I had a pending close vote on this post.
I think I had voted on this one too, but my vote must have expired.

7:03 PM
@Gilles It's telling me I have voted on that question too but there is only one vote pending. Does the system show you've voted even after votes expire?

@Caleb There's a single pending close vote, and if I try to vote to close I get the “You have already voted to close this question” message
If you get this message too, there's a bug

@Gilles I do.
At one time there were 3 or 4 votes on that question, so I think it's showing us the message because we did vote even if one or the other of our votes has timed out.

@Caleb That's a bug in the new sliding close vote expiration code
@Caleb Post a bug report on meta.SO and I'll confirm in a comment

@Caleb which distros use this scheme: /home/users/username for users and /home/services/servicename for /srv

@Tshepang PLD-Linux for one. There used to be quite a handful of other small distros that did it but I haven't checked around in a while.

7:18 PM
@Caleb it's non-standard right (FHS)?

@Tshepang No, although FHS does mention subdividing /home into various groups.
I really like the layout actually. I've taken it a step farther on my own systems and modified some things that would normally store in /var like mysql to use /home/services/mysql instead.

@Caleb me not like it too much

In effect it puts /var and /home and /srv on the same raid array ... just easier for me to manage and backup.

it's a little too deep

/var/logs etc stays, I wouldn't put that in /home/services
@Tshepang Suit yourself. I type ~username anyway to get to user folders :)

7:22 PM
having a directory structure getting deep is an eyesore
but at least u do it for a good reason
hey nice, there's now a newsletter
there's even an example

@Caleb It is dodgy, the local admin sometimes can't choose file names under /home because they have to be the same across a heterogeneous network

@Gilles Ya I know. I admin several systems that have alphabetical subdividions under /home and they are a freaking pain.
@Tshepang I don't think it's the depth that's a problem nearly so much as the breadth. A major part of the reason people aren't freaked out by the windows directory hierarchy is that the massive chaos of it is mostly hidden by a depth they don't even know is there.

@Caleb I will rather have /var as a top-level dir than 5 levels deep inside of Windows
it's harder for the brain to grasp... what's where
I find FHS quite elegant

@Tshepang I didn't suggest changing /var, only that a few big items that end up in there are really a weird fit anyway.

7:37 PM
though I''m not sure about separation between /bin and /sbin
@Caleb nor did I suggest that you suggested so :)
twas just an example
@Tshepang oh, and /usr really needs a rename
@Tshepang /sys would be a better fit, but it's already taken :(
