Q: File system for an SSD drive

A: rolling diffs for storage of highly similar files?

GillesTwo backup tools that can store binary diffs are rdiff-backup and duplicity. I think it was right the way it was

6:34 PM
it needed a pause, hence the comma
or do u want me to take this up with English SE :)
damn, I haven't asked a question in quite a while

@Tshepang The comma is technically ungrammatical, I think. Else you'd need one before “above that” as well, and that's too much. But the sentence was a bit long, I'll split it up.

@Gilles Barring the other improvements, you've made it as unparseable as it was before.
I think it's better to have too many commas than too little.
In its current form, I have to re-read the sentence in order to make sense of it.
Think about how you'd read out that sentence.
You will have a slight pause between that and they.
@Gilles, is my comment accurate?

@Tshepang I don't know, I've never looked at rdiff-backup closely

that comment was based on what u said in that answer
nothing else
I just wanted to confirm I understood what you said.

@Tshepang Oh, I see what you mean. Yes, rdiff-backup lets you easily browse the latest backup, whereas duplicity lets you easily browse the last full backup (less useful). I thought you meant it let you easily browse any stage of the backup.

6:49 PM
full backup?
oh, the earliest backup?
that is, u can browser how the fs looked the first time I did the backup?

@Tshepang Not so easily in fact, a duplicity full backup is not just a tar archive IIRC

oh, sux even more
advantage is that it's encrypted, though I don't know if that's optional
rdiff-backup doesn't have that option AFAIK

@Tshepang It's optional.

ok
I like rdiff-backup due to its simplicity
it's both simple and powerful
although nothing really beats VCS really

Q: Which of these is more correct?

TshepangCompare these 3 sentences: Both are based on librsync, but above that they behave quite differently. Both are based on librsync, but above that, they behave quite differently. Both are based on librsync, but, above that, they behave quite differently. I found the first one hard to...

7:51 PM
@Tshepang : Num 2, definitely, and yes, "beyond that" is not standard usage here.
i doubt you'd get better answers than the people in that english usage forum.
i'd probably go with "besides that", or "apart from that". As already suggested.
"Although both are based on librsync, they behave quite differently." is also a good suggestion. and flows better.

@FaheemMitha I dont understand what you mean about "beyond that"

one could also use "aside from that"

@FaheemMitha I prefer this one above all else

@Tshepang : Sorry. I was referring to your original usage of "above that".

@FaheemMitha that was my guess, thanks for clarifying

7:55 PM
and mistyped.
though i think there are better choices than beyond that.

I like apart from that as u suggested

@Tshepang : Also suggested by Steve in the comments
I assume you are not a native English speaker?

am not, why?

@Tshepang : No special reason. Technically, neither is mine.

ok
I think some ppl read English different from me, cuz 2 of them actually made sense of the sentence with a single comma
I found that strange, wondering about what's wrong with my comprehension

8:00 PM
At least people outside India forced me to take stupid English proficiency languages.
@Tshepang : I think most people would prefer the second version.
Native speakers at least. It's all about where the pause occurs.

@FaheemMitha huh?

Anyway, I must congratulate you on trying to improve your language skills. Lots of people don't care.

am lost there
@FaheemMitha yeah, too many ppl don't

@Tshepang : What was unclear?

what's is "English proficiency languages"?

8:02 PM
@FaheemMitha I think you're missing that the text in question was originally mine, not Tshepang's. We disagree about that comma.

@Gilles : Ok. Yes, I was not aware of the context.
I thought he was asking about something he was writing.

@FaheemMitha often when I do something like, I wonder if I should link back to the post that inspired the post

@Tshepang : heh. that should have read "English proficiency exams". :-)

I avoid it so as not take attention away from the real question
@FaheemMitha ok, kool
but why u call 'em stupid?

@Tshepang : Ok. I don't imagine anyone cares.
@Tshepang : The exams? The exams were a waste of my time.

8:05 PM
someone did care once when I did a similar thing before, by linking to the post that inspired a question

Also, Americans seem to be under the illusion they can speak English. Often they can't.

@FaheemMitha ok
@FaheemMitha oh, is that so?

@Tshepang : I think it is up to you. Re referencing the original post.

@FaheemMitha I guess it depends on what u call English
there's American English and British English for example
@FaheemMitha not linking to it loses context (as u've proven) and linking to it can be extraneous

@Tshepang : I was just talking about poor skills. reading/writing/comprehension.
@Tshepang : Maybe so. I guess this is up to your individual judgement.

8:08 PM
@FaheemMitha oh, ok

BTW, what is your native language, if you don't mind me asking?

@FaheemMitha Tswana from South Africa

@Tshepang Ok. Not familar with that.

it's one of the Bantu languages, most famous member being Swahili
@FaheemMitha wouldn't expect it
it's spoken in just 2 countries, South Africa and Botswana

Yes, I see wikipedia has a page on it.
So, how is it in South Africa these days? Nice? And do they do a lot of Linux where you are?

8:11 PM
oh, I didn't know it was spoken in 2 other countries
@FaheemMitha not so much, but government apparently is pushing for it, but they r falling behind their targets I think
SA is pretty kool, but the socio-economic conditions r really bad
gaps between rich and poor is too much

Hmm. So, you are just an individual enthusiast?
not part of a larger community.

health care is also split between public and private

@Tshepang : India is probably worse.

that sux, cuz public healthcare is pretty bad
@FaheemMitha yeah, individual
not a member of any LUG

@Tshepang : Ok. so a few rich people, lots of poor people? That's how India is.
You have good internet connectivity there?

8:14 PM
@FaheemMitha yeah, but at least u guys have decent standard education right?
@FaheemMitha it's getting better steadily

@Tshepang : Not really. What are you referring to specifically?

out decent connections here r 4MBit

The rich do ok, but the governement run schools are really terrible.
or so i'm told.

@FaheemMitha I mean non-tertiary education
@FaheemMitha oh, I guess I got the wrong idea

@Tshepang : Not sure what that means. Like high school in the US?

8:16 PM
primary and secondary schools

do they have LUGS, or people just do their own thing?

first 12 years of school here in SA

@Tshepang : yes, those are mostly pretty bad.

@FaheemMitha there are, but it seems nothing is bustling

for the vast majority of the population.

8:17 PM
I only know of three LUGs
one of them doesn't even go regular meetings
it's mainly some mailing lists

@Tshepang : Ok. India also has a bit of activity, but not a lot.

and an odd release party or two
@FaheemMitha since I haven't enjoyed a LUG, I don't see much of a use

Well, that's too bad.

it seems to me online associations r the way to go
maybe I'm just shy
interestingly we r having local elections tomorrow
I wonder why they split them from National elections
what a waste of money!

@Tshepang : I dunno. I've never been part of a LUG either. On the other hand, I know a few people IRL who use Linux. It is not unusual in universities.

8:20 PM
I'm referring to municipal stuff

@Tshepang : Ok.

I nearly forgot it's a holiday tomorrow due to those elections BTW
thanks God, no work

Hmm, the SE sites are good resources. I've never used the english usage one. I probably should.

@FaheemMitha it's magnificent

@Tshepang : You don't enjoy your job? :-)

8:22 PM
I shining example of what SE can be
@FaheemMitha I love it
but I love chilling at home even more :)

@Tshepang Ok. :-)

watching movies; reading; programming

@Tshepang : heh.
@Tshepang : yes, they seem very helpful. and we can all do with language improvement.
I thought of a couple of questions to ask there, but haven't got around to it.

@FaheemMitha I've used it at least once before when there was an argument around some erroneous grammar usage by the SE team

@Tshepang: Do you use TeX?

8:25 PM
@FaheemMitha nah
I saw u r a little active there

@Tshepang : Ok.
@Tshepang : I've asked the odd question. I use it. I don't really know anything about it.
And it is a fairly specialist thing.

@FaheemMitha the kind of answers u get there r illuminating

But I was just going to say it was a good resource, and a friendly community.

@FaheemMitha it's another world, this TeX thing

@Tshepang : Was that a question? :-)

8:27 PM
I once wanted to sit down and learn it, and like many things, I got distracted
@FaheemMitha it's a comment regarding English SE

@Tshepang : Oh, right. Sorry. :-)

@FaheemMitha yeah, I expected that the question of mine was a dupe, and would be closed or something, but instead it got 2 votes

@Tshepang : Was that the question you just posted on?

yes
check, it has another answer, that opposes the others: english.stackexchange.com/questions/25783/…

@Tshepang : hmm. i really don't think commas are an important part of english anyway.

8:32 PM
why? I find them excessively important

and i've rarely seen usage like 3.
@Tshepang : Excessively? :-)

@FaheemMitha according to me, it's the most correct one, and also, more formal

@Tshepang Number 3?

yes

@Tshepang Ok.
and which version was Gilles going with?

8:34 PM
1st
I edited it to be 2, but he edited it back :(

@Tshepang : Ok.
@Tshepang : lol.

:)

i don't think people care about commas that much. I'm sure Gilles doesn't.

Actually he does, that's why he removed it.
BTW that question is currently the hottest on the site.

@Tshepang : Well, maybe.

8:39 PM
check my network profile, my 2nd-highest vore in SE comes from that site

@Tshepang : yes, I see.

I was actually surprised that no one had asked that question there before me.

@Tshepang : It's a good question.

thanks
