Q: programmatically creating a remote directory using ssh

Using a shell script, how can I create a directory remotely from serverA -> serverB using ssh? Can I pass the create directory command with the ssh command? How? I'm basically looking to create a directory remotely based on date (ex. 20110304), if it doesn't already exist.

Q: How to cut a large file

RomanI have a very big text file, about 80GB, and I need to cut a part form it that lies between two given lines. The part I need is not big, and I have not enough space left on the hard drive to do things like: head -n 10000000 filename > auxiliary_part tail -n 1000 auxiliary_part > needed_par...

Q: How do I add a new user to a GNU/LInux system by hand?

AndrejaKoI have a system which was designed for use by root only and I want to run an FTP server on it. The software I use handles authentication by using same username and password as OS itself. To me it looks safer to have another user for FTP data transfer and another which would just run FTP server. ...

Q: The "election" banner is now on meta only. Is that the correct behavior?

phuneheheI'm just curious. Since last week I have seen the message "Please participate in the Unix and Linux 2011 community moderator election" on both our main site and meta. Today the banner disappears on the main site. Is this by design? What's the logic behind that?

Q: Which is the safest way to get root privileges: sudo, su or login?

stribikaI would like to have the root account in safety even if my unprivileged user is compromised. On Ubuntu you can only use sudo for "security reasons" by default. However I am not sure it is any safer than just using login on a text-mode console. There are too many things that can go wrong if an at...

I wonder what Security.SE would make of it, but we're discouraging cross-posts. I'm definitely not suggesting migrating it there, we don't want to send the good questions away! Thoughts on posting a very similar question on Security.SE?

@Gilles Either that, or you ask on their Meta if they would prefer having questions like these asked on their site instead.
Considering their site is specifically for this subject, I don't know why we wanna keep such questions here.
We send server questions to SF, so why not send security questions to security-SE?
Maybe let's have the question on our meta too, so we can have some sorta guideline.
Oh, looking at their FAQ, they don't want home user security questions. Hm. They are acting like SF, who keep saying if u r doing server admin in a pro capacity, ask here, and if not, ask elsewhere.
they have a real good and clear FAQ: security.stackexchange.com/faq
This is one of the most important questions I've seen asked on SE.

@Tshepang If a question is equally appropriate for two sites, I prefer to keep it where it was posted
Here the question is definitely appropriate for UL
It may be appropriate for Security.SE, or it may be too general (they would prefer that the question be asked for a specific use case)

Peter Bendix PoulsenI've just installed Backtrack on my harddrive (got one), i also got Fedora and Windows 7. However, now i get the Backtrack-GRUB instead of my Fedora GRUB. How do i change that? I got a sda5 containing my Fedora GRUB so it should be easy to 'rewire' - i don't know how tho.

Q: How can I share a shell with my colleague w/o using VNC?

LazerMany a times, I want my colleague to have a look at some code on my system. He will mostly do it at his free time, and will need to login as me. Is there a way I can open a new shell as me, and then transfer the shell to him on his machine, so that he can use it whenever he wants to?
