Q: Are there any references to the Brahma Samhita before Chaitanya Mahprabhu?

Keshav SrinivasanAs I discuss in this question, one of the early movements that was important to the development of Vaishnavism was the ancient Pancharatra movement, whose sacred texts consisted of detailed procedures to worship the sage Narayana, an ancient incarnation of Vishnu. The Pancharatra movement eventu...

You said *Thanks for your answer! I'm skeptical of the "cause of causes" thing, because that could have been easily taken from the Brahma Vaivarta Purana. The other Brahmavaivarta Purana verse is more interesting, and I'd like to find more information to see whether it's really referring to the Brahma Samhita.*

See, this is interesting, to me, for example, this "the cause of all causes" verse is more important and even more interesting than the other. :)
I mean, this is so because it shows that expression being a specific characteristics of Brahma's speech, as he prefers to describe Lord K

In any case, I found the Shyam Chand Mukherjee book: books.google.com/books?id=J_sfAAAAMAAJ The quote is on page 113. Let me give you the full quote ... ... ...... All this stuff about multiple chapters, Dvadasi vratas, consecration of idols, etc., suggests to me that this Newari manuscript being referred to is a completely different text from the Brahma Samhita found by Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Perhaps there are multiple texts c

@brahmajijnasa "If we just assume that the Brahma Samhita is a forgery, then we have to admit that it had to have a very expert forger who knew all the Puranas, Agamas and other scriptures, and knew how to put together the first verse in the Brahma Samhita to be exactly typical for Brahma, which I personally do not believe." No, we don't need it assume he knew all of Hindu scripture. He could have just read the Brahma Vaivarta Purana and assumed it was Brahma's standard way of address, as you assumed.

@brahmajijnasa Also, the Brahma-Vaiavarta Purana contains a lot of interpolations, so it's also possible that the Brahma Samhita was composed at a late date and then the "cause of all causes" verse was interpolated into the Brahma Vaivarta Purana at a later date.
@brahmajijnasa "But then why Mukherji says "It is said that Sri-Caitanya brought this to Bengal from the South"? Was he just mistaken?" Yeah, I think he was mistaken. He must have seen the title of the manuscript and assumed it was the work found by Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.
@brahmajijnasa Yeah, it's possible that the verse about the five Samhitas is referring to Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's Brahma Samhita. But then it would be odd, because on that page first five Pancharatra texts are listed and then five "Samhitas" are listed. The Brahma Samhita is supposed to be a Pancharatra text, so the Samhita referred to here may be a different text.

@brahmajijnasa If you know Sanskrit, you can read the Brihad Brahma Samhita here: archive.org/details/brhadbrahmasamhita The Sanatkumara Samhita given on the Nitaai Veda website is a text that's accepted only by Gaudiya Vaishnavas. But there's another more famous Pancharatra text that's also called the Sanatkumara Samhita.
