Hey there!

1 hour later…
7:26 PM
Hi

8:23 PM
Hi @Tim, here I am :)

Tim
hello :)

so... I get your point in a conceptual level

Tim
I guess it's a matter of opinion, but I've always tried to use the code block of standalone code
I guess for 1 liners that are long, those scrollbars are ugly and annoying (which is why I split it off into the 3 commands when i edited :P)

but in practice, when the line is too long and would show a scrollbar, I feel its more user-friendly to the the whole line immediately visible
haha yes but if you think about users of the line
it's way more convenient to copy-paste a single command

Tim
yes fair point.
I wish there was a way to remove the gap between the lines but keep it wrapped...

8:25 PM
maybe we can amend the meta post with an exception
I'm pretty sure it's possible with css
also that was something I was wondering: who, if anyone, is taking care of the site's css?
aren't we going to implement a custom style? :D

Tim
What do you mean by custom style?
Like different to the beta style?

for the stackexchange site, like the reddit was customized as well
ah I so in beta we can't change it?

Tim
It will be changed after (officially) 90 days. However, realistically it could be years - and if the site isn't popular enough then maybe never.
Okay, i've added a clause at the end.

Q: Please can people format code properly

TimRecently I've seen a lot of code being formatted as inline style. This is not how it should be done. All code should be formatted with one of two styles. If it is just 1 line, with other text around it, use the ` ` formatting, like this: Hello. This is code and continued sentence. If it is on...

But as I've said there, I'd still err on the code block side.

Sure, that should be the default except if the line is too long

Tim
hmm i have a suggestion
what if you keep the first line split
and then combine the second and third?

8:33 PM
that still forces users to copy/paste more than once...

Tim
so it doesn't get too wide, and then the codeblock looks okay, and it's easier for the user.

easier in what sense? to understand, maybe, but is that worth the extra hassle?
I mean, if the line was reeeally long, sure, that'd make sense
but in this case I think it's a disservice to force users to run multiple commands when one would do
just because it looks better or is easier to read

Tim
hmm i guess
I suppose paste.ubuntu.com/11801199 is even worse

(the purpose of the command is primarily to be executed, only secondarily to be read)
I feel that confuses things unnecessarily. adds extra complexity and questions

Tim
yes true. although that argument would allow the code block style :P
nah it's fine

8:35 PM
:)

Tim
leave it as inline.

maybe we could agree on a limit

Tim
I'm picky from Ask Ubuntu where new users format massive command output with just ``

like, if a single line spans more than 3 lines when wrapped, it should be formatted as a code block

Tim
yeah 3 lines would look bad
or 2 if there's just 1 word on the second line?
My post is from Ask Ubuntu:

Q: Please can people format code properly

TimRecently I've seen a lot of code being formatted as quote. This is not how it should be done. All code should be formatted with one of two styles. If it is just 1 line, with other text around it, use the ` ` formatting, like this: Hello. This is code and continued sentence. If it is one line,...

8:37 PM
I get what you're saying but that'd make the rule too complex IMO

Tim
because I was fed up with people being silly and stupid.
yeah okay, 3 lines into codeblock :)
not saying you're silly or stupid btw :) Calling new users who don't read the docs silly :P

I never read it like that :)
just one suggestion
don't put the exception all the way at the bottom
I'd add it right next to the "one line, use code block" text

Tim
yeah see the update

just read it, haha
nice. But how about not leaving it up to the reader? ;)
clear guidelines are easier to follow
I mean, just state that it should have a maximum of 3 lines
and instead of language like "it's been pointed out" and "I still feel", it would be better to just name the concrete advantages and cases when that is allowed (i.e. when scrollbars appear)

Tim
I've edited a little
I'd rather not say they have to use it because you've still not quite persuaded me round :P
but you do have a good point that i'd not catered for before.

8:44 PM
I think it's fine now :D
do you think we should delete the comments in the answers prior to this discussion, to remove pollution?

ermahgerd elementary OS is born
ok guys I have a proposal
as early adopters, I believe we should all become room owners
cool cool
good chat boys

9:13 PM
@Tim, I've deleted the other comments, the only one remaining is this one: elementaryos.stackexchange.com/questions/35/…
