If strings $(command -v cat) is a bash script, and command -v cat is /bin/cat, what is echo $(command -v cat)?

@MartinThornton: That is also /bin/cat

@ParanoidPanda Ok, let's "brute force" this.
sudo updatedb
locate "cat" |grep -e "/cat$"
Your shell is somewhere hijacking the "link" to /bin/cat to something else. I suspect something in your $PATH. If that is the case, this command will find it.

@Stunts: The output for the second command (after running the first of course) was:

user136984
/bin/cat
/home/neo/Scripts/cat
/usr/lib/klibc/bin/cat
/usr/share/doc/menu/examples/cat
