Thing is, they're all in high school... :/ But they're really good at what they do. Since we need more of a creative genre, I can catch them up with things and they will likely contribute lots here (as well as the other SE sites, like Graphic Design for one of my friends)...
As many members of the community were concerned that the scope was too narrow and that many questions were veering towards a particular topic, some members of the community have now started to draw questions that are quite different from what we have been seeing. Many of us have discussed in chat...
I suppose, but a lot of us are quite generally nervous that we'll get into some sort of trouble, or worse treated differently (Even though that's not normally the case). I'm more open about it, advertising myself on my profile page :P
@HDE226868 I'm in my fifties, why should I start being mature at this late stage? If I wanted to grow up I would never have gone into embedded systems where i get to play with all the new toys years before they hit the markets
@HDE226868 It was a crazy game. We were short one girl (it's a co-ed league where you have to bat boy-girl-boy-girl) and ended up borrowing a girl from the other team's bench so that we could play.
so ... while we have the room to ourselves (not), regarding my call for nominations. I'm going back through the blog and the "7 essential questions" link. It doesn't say they will call for elections during the public beta. It says that SE will appoint 3 pro tem leaders which they select to serve until they call elections
> If your meta site does not have a post to nominate Moderators, start one now! Pro Tem appointments will begin about two weeks after the site is created. The more guidance we receive, the more informed our choice.
We probably also want a question to feel out what we want in our moderators, what we feel are essential qualities. I have no intention of nominating myself or accepting one. I don't have the bandwidth for it
@kdopen Ignore the “7 essential questions” blog post, it's out of date and unclear. It was posted back when Area 51-incubated sites were just starting and was never updated based on experience of actual betas. Instead, read this:
The blog post Seven Essential Meta Questions of Every Beta gets linked to prominently from every beta's meta. However, this blog post is somewhat inaccurate and misdirects new users. In almost every beta, the site design question, for example, gets asked and undergoes a fair bit of discussion eve...
I was approving edits in the Suggested Edits queue while I came across this:
http://opensource.stackexchange.com/review/suggested-edits/268
I approved it due to the description, we have a new tag. However, with a significant lack of tag wikis (For those of you who contribute, I applaud you), it...
@HDE226868 Yeah, it was kind of unbelievable, but the sun was shining from behind home plate at an angle that hit right underneath a hat brim for the shortstop and outfielders, which might have had something to do with it. Also the pitching on both sides was awful.
Regarding the "real" 7 questions post, I think it's worth noting that the answer there is entirely the work of one user.
I'd like to see discussion following this comment:
I'm voting to close this question as off-topic because it is more about the personal security of the user than open-source in general, although the question only tends to arise in an open-source context.
(emphasis mine)
How will we treat q...
Yep, easy questions are going to flood in when we go public ... they're called FAQ's. It helps to have canonical answers to point to when you "close as dupe"
This is what we've got so far: open source, marketing projects, organizing projects (as per area 51), copyright, creative commons, collaboration (as long as related to open source) and that's all I can find on meta and licensing, but thats obvious
I think advice on starting out would be good to have to point new users to (their question will be a duplicate of it). I'd prefer to see it on main than meta - main is where new users ask, and where they will see it in the list of similar questions
Guys, if it turns out messy, we'll delete it. Right now, one of the biggest issues is the lack of clarity for the scope. I'll facilitate it, I'll make it work.
@Zizouz212 I'm not nervous about improper use. The problem is that it'll become messy, and then some issues will be discussed in comments somewhere and people who weren't involved will have no chance of finding them.
@trichoplax cut out the middleman, don't have a general question which will be missing some updates and will have additional discussion that won't be visible from the appropriate thread
the general question has no advantage and only downsides
@Zizouz212 But it does not give you a clear version of the scope!
I'm just scared of the scope changing, and things won't be clear on that. Right now, we're getting waaay too many questions on licensing, and it needs to change.
In many stack exchange sites the scope of what questions should be answered has been lost.
I propose to keep this in check anybody that want to suggest topics for the scope of this site should use:
"Is [x] considered on-topic"
and the tag:
is-this-on-topic

The purpose of this post is to make clear the scope of Open Source, having the results of various meta threads as well as the Area 51 proposal here. If a result arises from a meta thread, please add it here so that the information is accessible to everyone! Just add to or update the answer! It's ...

@TrevorClarke Two things: The post doesn't serve to do much that people should already know, and the tag doesn't do anything as we already have on-topic
We already have a working system, and you completely ignore what exists and invent your own. Is that some kind of metaphor for the messiness of bazaar-style development?
I wish I had more of a background to be able to post good questions on this beta. I tend to be one of those types who will only write up a question to SE as a last resort, and half of the time solves it mid-writeup.
@trichoplax I have done, on occasion. But when I solve the problem, usually I have to continue working.
Also, sometimes the solution ends up revealing that the problem statement was a red herring, or the keywords I was searching were wrong and it's actually a dupe
Intro: Contrary to popular belief, recommendation questions can work well on Stack Exchange. See for instance Software Recommendations, where questions and answers are of high quality.

As a rule, each question sho...
Let us say I have a question about an open source project that looks something like:
Hi! I am a newbie user of XYZ. So, while I was referring to XYZ's API doc, I couldn't understand what function ABC() does.
Well, obviously doubts like these get asked on SO all the time and are on-topic (s...
Teaching materials like textbooks or work sheets can be opened up to free redistribution and free change for everyone. What are the advantages and the risks of doing so in comparison to keeping it closed? Are there different advantages/risks for the public and the publishing instance?
On the subject of badges ... anyone got beyond a progress of '1' for 'Curious'? Most of us must have asked upvoted questions on more than one day by now.
The description of the new Curious badge currently reads:
Asked a good question on 5 separate days, and maintains a positive question record.
The term "good question" seems to be defined by the badge Good Question:
Question score of 25 or more.
Curious seems to use another criterion, ...
The question speaks for itself:
Should we allow case studies? For example, should we look at the practices and results that other organizations or projects have taken, and sort of make case studies out of there:
Ex (A bad ex though): Is blah blah grow faster because of blah blah blah. Feel free...
@Zizouz212: Your question about free cultural work is great. I didn't know about that before, but read it up now. I didn't know it existed, but recently thought something like that should be defined.
Suppose I want to release a software program to the App Store, under an open source license. As I want to increase the number of downloads, I want to advertise that the software is an Open Source Project.
I want to use the logo of the Open Source Initiative, to help me do this. Assuming that I w...
Seriously? Thank god there's nothing like that on answers... I have at least one down vote on like 8 of the 12 answers I have. Feels kind of suspicious in a sense though.
Proposal: Open Source
The OSI (Open Source Initiative, http:opensource.org) was contacted regarding the use of the OSI logo (http://opensource.org/files/osi_standard_logo.png) as part of this site proposal.
After a bit of discussion, the OSI would be interested in promoting this forum, should i...
On SO the awards are Curious: 173k, Inquisitive: 17.5k, and Socratic: 2k ... so it's not that easy to get. Though Mortarboard and (curiously) Talkative seem the least awarded
According to this Area 51 Discussion Post, the Open Source Initiative was contacted regarding the use of their logo. In the end, the OSI was interested in promoting this site, hoping to use it to discuss Open Source related topics.

The OSI currently provides mailing lists and email contacts for people to ask questions related to open source issues: copyright/licensing/patents, funding models, community development & management, etc.
@Zizouz212 just a note: mentioning that you've doe voted someone in comments can lead to some heated discussions... Not to stop you, but it's a possibility.
@Mnementh that was me from the close review queue. I'd say it's on topic, but just "what risks" is pretty broad - there are literally hundreds. You could ask about financial risk, perhaps?

@Mnementh you've already got a too broad close vote on that. I think you could ask about how it makes lesson prep easier, or about whether there are other things they can be used to teach instead.
