Q: Why is a suspicious program draining my battery with GPS usage?

crocket Phone : nexus 5 version 2013 Android version : 6.0 Kernel version : 3.4.0-g2aa165e Build number : MRA58N For the last few days, 10118 has been draining my phone's battery. It drains battery by using GPS. I typed 'ps' in a terminal emulator, and there was no application with PID 10118. I don't ...

It might make your day.
<I'm trying to be sarcastic>
Also, @Izzy, did you come across my question: android.stackexchange.com/questions/130193/… ? Anyone else is also welcome

@TamoghnaChowdhury ROFL! Yeah, that's one post #D Guess the poster's phone is pretty empty/non-working now, as most files (.apk for example) cannot "be read" :)
@TamoghnaChowdhury Should be possible – but I've never tried. I'd rather go for FolderMount instead, so you have not to reserve a "fixed amount" of space.

11:22 AM
@Izzy Any input for this question?

11:43 AM
@Firelord See above? Why use a container, when you can do it transparently? – Or is "this question" another topic, and you (again ;) forgot the link?

@Izzy LOL, yeah, sorry! I forgot the link. It's that GPS question where we were discussing about battery stats. Turns out, I've difficulty pinpointing the app using system services.

@Firelord As usual, a link would help. got some other tasks open, so I cannot always search to see if I've got "any input" to something :)

@Firelord No idea on a quick glance – and currently lack the time to dig deeper, sorry.

Q: How or where can I ask about vendor providing system apps?

NilsI want to buy a new android device and do not want to root it. But I need some functions. These functions can only be provided - on a non-rooted device if they are provided as system app. So I end up with a quetion about which veendor provides me with system apps, providiing the needed function...

11:58 AM
Good approaches you've taken – and I agree with you I'd expected procstat to contain some details. Most likely "10118" is not running continuously.

@Izzy Yeah, but procstats also shows an aggregate of last 24 hours. It includes those apps too which are not currently running. My take right now would be to see the UID of all those apps reported by location service.

@Firelord You've got the same culprit in mind as I, huh? Some app excessively using location services (normally GMaps in background, even if not started manually)? I've thought about an ls -la /data/data | grep 118, but that requires root. OP doesn't state whether the device is rooted.

Yeah, if OP mentions whether the device is rooted, we can hunt for many things ranging from packages.xml to packages.list, /acct/uid/ and more perhaps.

12:23 PM
@Firelord Exactly – root is "where the fun begins" :)

@Izzy true, but OP doesn't have that at the moment. See chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/25764878#25764878 for the discussion

2 hours later…
2:01 PM
@Izzy and @Firelord, can either of you confirm that the Google Play Mobile data download warning is triggered when the total app size exceeds 50MB?

2:12 PM
Hold on, @Firelord and @Izzy. I have a rooted 6.0 . Tell me what to do. Probably, if it's a system thing, I might have it too.

2:49 PM
@TamoghnaChowdhury I cannot, as I've never downloaded an app that large :) I only vaguely remember there was something.

No apk published on Google play is allowed to be larger than 50MB. I mean an app with expansion files (.obb) which makes it go above 50MB
I vaguely remember the first Amazon release of Republique, a game, as a 941MB APK. O.O
@Izzy, you don't play games? :O
You should. Android has a few good ones now. Now if you're too old for it, I can't say anything.

1 hour later…
4:21 PM
@TamoghnaChowdhury W00t? What's games? I didn't buy a Nintendo :)
@TamoghnaChowdhury If that's the only acceptable excuse, so be it … But no, I neither play games on my computer. Well, except some Solitair, occasionally (maybe once every two years).
@TamoghnaChowdhury Y'know what just made my day now? Read this :)
> I have a huge 116 KB taken up in music […] which I desperately want to remove to free up space.

5:11 PM
Don't suppose anyone can help? I need to deploy the same settings/config to a load of android tablets... I can't find a good solution to manage this other than manual :( Is there any deployment type utility like the ios configurator?
even MDM utilities aren't good as I need to go through first run through, update android, join network, download mdm tool, and more :/

5:28 PM
@Izzy, that "sprayed" on my day too☔😅

@WilliamHilsum Depends. Are all those tablets of the same brand/model? And is it an "initial setup"?

6:26 PM
@Izzy Yes and no, they are all the same tablet purchased for this project, and, they are all in various different configs/stages - I want to wipe them all to default settings... on Ios, I could plug in to a configurator, and just unlock the phone/tablet, then, it would wipe and restart to a baseline... I just can't find anything similar for android

6:48 PM
@WilliamHilsum Well, if you factory-reset them, and it's all the same brand/model, that counts as "yes" :) In this case, you might wish to investigate in adb backup and adb restore – i.e. configure one device as you want them all to be, back it up, and restore the backup to all the other devices. That may work for you or not – as a) apps can "opt-out" of ADB backups, and b) ADB backups do not really cover everything.

Well, we only need one app that we built in house, so, I'll be shocked if it doesn't deploy that way!
does ADB work nicely with MAC address/uniqueness - e.g. won't actually clone... just do in device state... if you know what I mean

Entry-points: our tag-wikis for adb and for backup, plus our "master question" on the topic: Full Backup of non-rooted devices
@WilliamHilsum I've never restored a complete backup, so I cannot really tell. What OS are you using on desktop side?

@Izzy not really important... got osx/linux/windows available

(while you're typing that: ADB backup should also help you transfer stuff to a new device, so I'd say it works. MAC addresses shouldn't be stored in software, but read from hardware anyway :)

That's cool, thank you - I'll give it a try

6:53 PM
OK, Linux/Mac (or Windows with Cygwin), I might have something for you to customize things a bit (disclosure first: my product): Adebar does a lot of stuff in that direction. Currently, it might not be a big help on your specific topic – but when you work a lot with many devices and ADB, you might find it interesting.
Creates device documentation, backup scripts (you then can simply modify to your needs), and more. If you miss something, suggestions are welcome :)
("Adebar" stands for "Android DEvice Backup And Report", but another backward interpretation is "ADeBe'er", the ADB tool :)
@WilliamHilsum Anytime, and good luck! If that brings up any additional questions, you know where to find us :)
I've never transfered system settings between devices with adb backup/restore – but apps with their data, a lot :)

Looks interesting, I don't suppose you are on Skype? Got a little bit of a budget here and I wouldn't mind asking a few questions as you seem to know what you are doing! :)

@WilliamHilsum izzysoft

Got you if you want to delete...

Got and confirmed :)
My Skype is often on "standby" (i.e. "not available, but listening"). But you also find me in this chat room 24/7 to give me a ping :)
