@Izzy I don't even read your tag edits anymore, I just do a quick glance to make sure someone didn't hack your account to post spam :P. Great work dude.

@MatthewRead LOL Yeah, "suspicious activities" :) Thank you!

I feel like when I get a support request for one of my apps I should put the question and answer on here for other users, but that would be pretty spammy

@DanHulme you're not the first dev to have that sort of idea:

Q: Should I direct my users to this site for support questions?

Nicolas RaoulI am considering the idea of directing user questions about my open source app to Android Enthusiasts. In the past, some questions have been already asked about the app, but one was also closed as too localized. Right now we are using a Google Group for support questions, with about 10 voluntee...

it's a nice idea, but I agree with all the "why you would not want this" points too
What made me think of it is that I get more "how do I do this real-world task with your app?" questions than troubleshooting ones, and the answers are usually pretty similar and could be answered by anyone
adding a product wiki to my site would be an alternative, but nobody would look at it

2:44 PM
@DanHulme I guess there's the argument that the answers to the questions that you get asked most frequently could benefit more people by being on a site that ranks highly on Google.
Even more so as the vast majority of people with a problem probably never contact you, but either suffer silently and grumble, or ditch your app and do something else.

@GAThrawn That's a good argument for always trying to make it easier to use, of course

@Izzy done

@Flow Thanks! So how about separating 'root' from 'rooting', so I can go on? :)

already on it

At MASE, 3 pros and no con on my question :) Oh! OK, then I'll go and speed up! Thanks!!

@Flow Yepp, now I'm already on it :) Just updated the 'rooting' wiki. Maybe you can approve that edit, to re-direct new questions accordingly already. 'root' has its first question tagged, I'm now working on its tag-wiki...
Excerpt saved, so you could approve that as well :)

I always wonder how helpful advices about how to use a tag are. Since the tag excerpts are not really visible when creating a question. But they don't do any harm and it seems to be encouraged by jeff artwood.

3:41 PM
@Flow You are not 100% correct: Excerpts are visible until you have the tag completed. Try e.g. typing 'unroot', and see the suggestion below the input box. Then complete the word to 'unrooting' and press space -- or simply click the tag suggestion. NOW the excerpt is no longer visible.
The only real point is: If even YOU did not notice that until now (being on ASE for -- how long? 2+ years, right?) -- what to expect from a new user?
Nobody seems to read them. Or how would you explain somebody tagging his own question 'development', where the excerpt clearly states "OFF TOPIC!"?

@Izzy Oh right, I think the main reason that I wasn't aware of that is that I didn't asked a question in months.

So the main issue is: How to draw attention to the tag wiki excerpts, and their links, and especially the full tag wikis?
I try to encourage this lately in many a comment: "Basic advice can be found in the tag wiki (link) -- and btw, hovering your mouse... first aid in many tag wikis..."
And yes, we have many "first aid tag wikis", I know that for sure (I wrote them #D)

@Izzy alas, that's too late, and we have a lot of users who never ask a second question

@DanHulme Yepp, agreed. But some other users read the comments as well -- at least I hope so...
Let's wait a few months, and see how things develop. Unfortunately, we cannot vote-to-close on behalf of a tag wiki...

4:08 PM
@Flow I often edit tags of existing questions -- so that might be the reason I'm aware of many details in this context. E.g. I recently learned by missing the red "x" to remove a tag, when you click it on the very right edge you can edit it! That was very convenient on my "sd-card" cleanup: tack it, and the auto-suggest popup appeared, so I could freely chose between 'internal-sd', 'external-sd', and 'sd-card'...
... (which was one of the reasons I pushed you so much for the 'internal-sdcard' synonym :)

Done with the 'rooting' => 'root' ugh! But now for the shock: ~1.400 questions to check where we "rejected the 'rooting' tag as they were not addressing rooting", but might have addressed 'root'... =:-0

10% done, saying good-night for today..

@Izzy goodnight
