This'll be an interesting set of questions when devices land in user's hands: "RIM Announces Android Apps to Run on the PlayBook" "Developers currently building for the BlackBerry or Android platforms will be able to quickly and easily port their apps to run on the BlackBerry Tablet OS thanks to a high degree of API compatibility." blackberrycool.com/2011/03/24/…

I've got a question: my G1/Dream won't boot at all, I just get a black screen. I found this post android.stackexchange.com/questions/2289/… but the difference is I don't even see the boot logo. Should I post this as a separate question on the site?

@GAThrawn Official press release: press.rim.com/release.jsp?id=4935. I have to say it's a smart move, especially keeping it decoupled from the Android market ... cutting Google out at the knees
@Mingo See if you can get into recovery mode as the answer to that question suggests and try a factory reset, if not or it still doesn't work then post a new question. thanks for searching :)

@Matthew Read Ok I can't get it to boot into anything, even to do a factory reset, so I'll go ahead and post a new question. Thanks!

@Mingo wipe data and then try to reflash CM6?

Sorry, I'm still new to all this. I can't get the computer to see the phone, so I don't know how I can wipe it. I just posted this as a question here: android.stackexchange.com/questions/7752/…
I'm very, very new to Android, so please excuse the ignorance!

2:29 AM
Ahh, basically you would go into the recovery. It should have an option to wipe data. And after that you would have to flash the cm6 zip file (and the gapps zip afterward). It's basically how you manually flash CM onto the phone without using rom manager (sorry this isn't the greatest explanation atm)

Thanks for the help. The problem right now is that I can't get into recovery either.

@MatthewRead I think time will tell whether or not it will be a smart move. In a way they're doing what Nokia's just done and turning themselves from an "Apple-like" company producing their own premium hardware and software platform and eco-system into just another commoditized hardware manufacturer competing on their "value-adds".
In their case they'd be competing on their hardware quality (as all the other Android clone manufacturers are) with the value-add of Blackberry backwards compatibility, and their servers/security story. Will that be enough?

Hi, Is this a really good idea to post questions to android.stackexchange.com rather than on stackoverflow? Maybe android.stackexchange.com should import all questions releated to android from SO?

11:43 AM
@noisy yes, it was decided early on (as early as choosing the site's name) that Android Enthusiast are for user Q&A, not developer Q&A.

11:57 AM
the reason being that we do not want to diverge the user base of StackOverflow, if you want a private stackexchange for android development, just favorite the android tag on SO: stackoverflow.com/questions/tagged/android.

My original Droid screen died yesterday. I'm 3.5 months away from a new phone and still in contract with Verizon. I need something to tide me over until I can get a new phone. Any advice on where to get a cheap android phone for Verizon?

@MattCasto you could probably get another droid for pretty cheap. If you want cheaper, look for a Droid Eris (but they also aren't nearly as good)
@MattCasto Your phone isn't covered under the contract though?

@BryanDenny Turns out I didn't have insurance and its out of warranty.

@MattCasto ah, I see
I think you can get a droid for $200 or less (used)
Eris might be a little cheaper

@BryanDenny Not through Verizon I can't. Are you talking about buying one through ebay or craiglist or something like that?

yeah ebay or craigslist
the only downside is having to make sure it has a clean ESN

1:42 PM
@BryanDenny How do you make sure a phone has a clean ESN? Attempt to transfer numbers before paying?

1:54 PM
@MattCasto I'm not entirely sure because I haven't bought a used CDMA phone before (I've bought a used G1, but it is GSM and uses a SIM card). But yeah, basically you have to call Verizon and say you want to activate a new phone and you have to give them the ESN. If they can't activate it, then it isn't clean
You could say something like, "I have an older phone I wish to activate and want to make sure it'll activate" or something like that. This would make for a good question (someone else has bound to have done this before)

2:40 PM
New Android podcast: All About Android

@AlEverett I just saw that, I'm going to listen to it after I finish this episode of twit I'm listening to
I used to listen to a lot of android podcasts a year or so ago, but at one point just stopped listening to them

2:56 PM
I found a really old non-smart phone that I can use until I get something better. Maybe a few months of detox will be good for me.

@MattCasto best of luck :) I wouldn't survive

Ha! Thanks. We'll see. We're held hostage by the carriers, especially those of us on family plans.
