@MassimoOrtolano I can’t help seeing a winged statue at night in your profile picture – unless I look at a high-resolution version.

Q: Gendered pronoun usage

eykanalOne of the community members has approached the moderators with a concern about gendered pronoun usage amongst our Academia members. Specifically, this individual felt that calling out gender in discussion—e.g., "he said…" or "as she commented…"—risks introducing bias and may affect the quality o...

I really with Stack Exchange had a good EE site, so that when graduated students email me questions I can point them to this resource. The current EE Stack Exchange is not that great, at least for my field.

@ff524 Would Network Engineering be more fitting?

@Wrzlprmft Nah, it sounds like it would be but their scope is actually really narrow.
In general, I think I need to start teaching my "How to ask questions on the Internet" module in every course I teach. Until now, I was only teaching it to my research students.
Students need to learn how to bother random strangers on the Internet with their question after they've graduated, instead of relying on their former professors :)

I also feel like I am the only one who answers questions about chaos theory.
At least remotely correctly. Sometimes high-reputation physics users give utterly wrong answers on this topic.
I wonder if it’s worth sending your students to SE and tell them that you will answer their question there if nobody else did within a week.
This way, you may save some work and you make the respective site more attractive for potential answerers in the future

I don't exactly do that. I do teach my research students to post questions on appropriate forums or SE sites, and then I answer the question if nobody else does, but I don't promise them in advance that I will.

@ff524 That sounds even better.

Sometimes I answer students' questions that didn't tell me they were going to post on SE (or mailing list), and didn't expect me to know about their question. It freaks them out a little bit :)

I once answered question on SE by somebody who now is in my physical vicinity. I hope that this happens again, so I would just walk to their office and say something like “Hi, I come from the Internet to answer your question.”

@Wrzlprmft just don't go overboard:

@ff524 Also for other fields, e.g. circuit theory, is not that great. A few months ago I spoke about EE.SE with a friend of mine who is an excellent electronic designer and started to participate there. He had my same impression: some answers are good, but when it comes to subtle details there is a dramatic fall in quality.
