I hate IT departments. They are refusing to give my summer student an email address/network login.

@StrongBad What exactly does the network login entail?

@Wrzlprmft access to printers, shared drives, library resources, shared software licenses, email lists ...

Sometimes I am happy that our work group is our own IT department. There is an official IT department somewhere, but as long as they do not fully block us, they can do no harm.

@Wrzlprmft I work for the DoD now. We can get pretty good internet access via the wireless system for patients, but it doesn't allow any type of networking. Most of us run two computers: a nearly useless DoD managed machine and a non-networked personally (group managed) computer.
The DoD machines do not even allow USB sticks or access to dropbox or google drive. We have to burn stuff to CD/DVD to transfer. It is like the early 90s.

@StrongBad Our IT department is not that bad, but as there is no need for us to use official machines to begin with, we just don’t have any.

@Wrzlprmft yeah the DoD has introduced me to a whole new level of hell. At my old UK university Windows machines had to be centrally managed, which just made most people switch to Linux.

@StrongBad That’s one way to do it. One of the institutes here just totally outlawed Windows because one Windows machine suffices to break their network for some reason.

Q: Is there a way to add more ECTS to my degree?

Ilia PhyllisI have a bachelor's degree in Oenology and Beverage Technology and I would like to apply for a master's degree in Brewing Science and Technology. However, my bachelor's ECTS in mathematics and statistics are far fewer than those required by the M.Sc. Is there a way to add more ECTS to my degree?...

How can you not want a MSc in Brewing Science and Technology

8:05 PM
@StrongBad IIRC, you can only study this in Bavaria …

@Wrzlprmft and the UK

Q: How to keep my phone number private, when I have to provide a way for students to contact me?

Amanda R.I am an instructor of classes that only run for 1-4 weeks. The facility I teach at requires me include my cell phone number on the class schedule that I give out. However, during and after the last class I taught I received 250+ texts from one of my students. Only about 5 or so were specific ques...

This question was just posted on Workplace but feels much more appropriate for this site, thoughts?
It's well-written and has a clear core question so seems like a candidate for migration if it's on-topic here.
Rereading, it seems like the OP's specific situation is about teenage students so no actually graduate level. Not sure if that's sufficient to invalidate the general question here.
