Q: Algebra or Analysis

VaibhavI am currently doing MS in Mathematics. As far as I know there are two approaches which anyone can take to do Mathematics- Analysis and Algebra. I don't know what "initial check" means on your diagram
Also, do you want to put an arrow back from revision to an earlier point in the workflow, to explain about re-use of referees, etc?

@jakebeal The intial check performed by most journals to sieve out broken manuscripts and utter junk.
@jakebeal No, this would unneccessarily complicate the diagram. I would rather state the differences in the second and further rounds at the respective steps (e.g., “in the second round, usually the referees from the first round are contacted”)

@Wrzlprmft I see --- I tend to think of that as another form of desk rejection, but I can appreciate the distinction between "This manuscript is not on topic" and "This is not really a manuscript."

@jakebeal The main reason for distinguishing this is that some journals/editorial systems have a separate status message for this.
Also, if the initial check takes two weeks, I would contact the journal and ask what’s wrong. If the editorial assessment takes that long, I wouldn’t (at least with most journals).
