A: Brewing fresh coffee for Shabbos with a time clock

MefareshThe Sefer Yerushas Pleita (Siman 16) brings from a sefer called Matta Yerushalayim that quotes in the name of the Chasam Sofer that it was common for people to set up a fire on Erev Shabbos in a way that would burn along a path until shabbos morning where it would reach the stove that had a coffe...

+1, that is one elaborate coffee making mechanism! A fire that burns along a windy path for hours? Wow.

Just remember according to chassam sofer (and maybe Mishna Berurah too) the coffee and water would have to be in the machine before shabbos starts.
Just reiterating for clarity:) I'm pretty sure this chassam soffer is in his tshuvos. Why did Rabbi Brown take the long route? I'm also quite certain I've seen Reb Shlomo Zalman Mattering this.

@user6591 איך וייס נישט. If you can find the mekor in Teshuvos please ping me.

Will do .......

@user6591 any Siyata dishmaya yet?

@Mefaresh nope. I found a lot of nice chidushim in the chassam soffer while skimming through it though:) I actually checked the seffer com Rabbi Eider that I quoted in my answer as a last ditch hope of finding this chassam soffer. Someone told me he saw it in there. Well, apparently it's not there! As you can tell.

well lemaaseh you gave a good, albeit one sided ;-) answer +1

Also, I don't know if the right word to use is disappointed, but I'm surprised that you chose to only quote the part of that footnote that says it's muttar and did not mention the opinion saying it's assur. Especially considering that the mattir is an unknown saying a strange chidush, and the one who disallowed it was Rag Heinkin! The official (unofficial?) chief rabbi of America before Reb Moshe came to town.

ein hachi nami, i quoted it because its more geshmak, i in now way trying to present the full halachic discussion, just when i came across this interesting mareh makom, i wanted to share it. i was being tongue in cheek when i said you were being one sided

@Mefaresh although this site has a disclaimer about CYLOR and such, anything said will influence people. Especially naive unlearned people. If you pay attention to the way the votes fall around here, it basically goes in accordance with what people want to hear. Which is understandable. Not good, but understandable. There definitely are people who will act upon information they find on this site, disclaimer notwithstanding. Take heed:)

True. But it's not like I quoted some no shaychus opinion.

@Mefaresh you keep forgetting to ping me. It might be no shaichus. First of all Rabbi Brown wasn't machria so at best you have a safek. Secondly, one of my Rabbeim learnt by Rabbi Brown and whenever I would quote something to him from Rabbi Brown, he would tell me to look up anything Rabbi Brown quotes. He said this respectfully, and he had much respect for Rabbi Brown. But at the same time his quotes cannot be taken for granted.

@user6591 I agree. But my rebbe is his son in law and that is not necessary what I was taught by him.

@Mefaresh bouya! Nice!

@user6591 ? Why cuz I countered with his eidim?

@Mefaresh Yeah. I was not expecting that as a reply.

@user6591 glad I can keep you on your toes 😄
@user6591 Bkitzur I hear what your saying.

9:07 PM
@Mefaresh I do recall one big name rabbi allowing this, I'm just gonna double check before I open my mouth. so I'm still on the case.

@user6591 although my answer was chosen, i think it carried weight as well that the second highest voted answer is basically just qutoing Rav Moshe exclusivly l'issur. so there is a balance to at least mitigate whatever sort of chashash by giving the impression of a machlokes

@Mefaresh fair point.

@user6591 both your answer and the other one i FWIW voted for

@Mefaresh I voted on his and yours as well. Fwiw. I'm not trying to change the system here. Ein mizarzin ella limizurazin:) I just guessed I had a good ear to chew on, and I was right:)

@user6591 ear to chew on? That must be a yiddish phrase that doesnt crossover well in English. Never heard that before.
