Q: Complex musical chords

BuschmannFor my thesis in musicology (somebody create that tag!) that is due this monday I need help figuring out how to achive notation of complex musical chords in Latex. I have tried every googable solution for stacking symbols in math mode and i have looked for packages that does this the right way, b...

@Mico musicology? Why?

@Mico Much obliged. Musicologists need a place to geek out as well!

You should check out Music.SE :-) that said, @Mico I think music is sufficient for TeX.SX -- I suppose time shall tell :)

@SeanAllred Perhaps, but this is specific to the academic and scientific branch of musicology, not music as such. As in: How to solve musical typography in latex. I firmly belive there is a comming need for musicology spesific latex packages and though some music forum is great for discussing music they dont know latex like you guys do.

@Buschmann oh naturally – I wasn't saying your question wasn't welcome :) but I don't think there are a lot of typography-related distinctions between music and musicology. At the end of the day, all you're doing is engraving the notation.

@SeanAllred This is true, and i see your point, but its a bit like saying arithmetic and algebra is the same because its math. EDIT: Nice link! Thank you!

@Buschmann I wouldn't really approve of an arithmetic tag, either :) it comes down to whether or not the typography has to tackle different problems
It would help if you provided a true MWE with your question

8:08 PM
A MWE? Ok, i can do that.
Anyways, solutions that require my template to act around it is not going to do the trick.

@Buschmann I gotcha, but we don't know what we're dealing with :)

This is also true. Man, my thesis brain HURTZ. And now i've included the full detail of what my setup is.
With the new code @Mico provided i still find the output undesirable: i.imgur.com/7lnOrjZ.png

I like your idea of having arguments. Is it possible to leave some empty, say if i only needed C7?

9:35 PM
@Buschmann I'm almost certain there's a way to do it organically. Take a look at \ce from the mhchem package, for example. That kind of organic syntax. How would you represent chords using only ASCII? For example, I could say d-flat-minor as Db-, but this syntax should encompass whatever types of notation you'd need
It could be pretty straightforward to do in expl3
For example, how would you type out the chord in your example? How would you say it?

9:59 PM
I would say something like, c seven, c sharp 9, c flat sharp 9 sharp 5.

10:14 PM
Is it possible to adjust the vertical space between the stacked numbers? I should be a wee bit tighter.
