I have sent request to other MVPs. Lets see if they can join us

9:03 AM
Ah, Sid, here I am. New kid on the block. No idea how this works. What does this do that I don't have already? Why should I use this? What extra steps do I need to take to be on top of discussions that happen here?

Hey :)
You don't have to install anything... (I remember the last conversation :D)
This is just for the Stack where we can discuss Excel/.Net questions and share important views
you can visit anytime you want
what I have done is enabled the desktop notification on the right so that i get an alert when someone posts here. You may or may not opt for that.
Only approved members (MVP) can chat here. So that the discussions don't go haywire :)
I don't think that in the beginning there will be that many discussions here but later on as more MVPs join, I am sure there will be lot of important discussions happening...

OK, I happened to keep this tab open. I only saw your reply when I came back. There was no email or other notification. This will not work for me. I cannot have yet another tab open for direct messaging. Too many communication systems. If you want me, email me.

But I already told you how to enable the notification :)
Still if you want to leave, you are most welcome :)

OK an old fashioned F5 resolved issues. Thanks for the invitation!

@Teylyn: BTW this is not about me wanting you :) I know if I need you, I can email you. This chat forum is where MVPs can come together and discuss.

Thanks Sid.

9:36 AM
You are welcome Dennis

(I'm not good at smiley-faces but here's one :D)

I have realized that these smiley faces can really make a difference when communicating in Stack

Q: Pick a symbol if a value is between two numbers

mrquadI am struggeling with a good solution for the following problem: As you can see I have a table with evaluation criterias on the one side and I have a score on the other side. So, IF the score is between a certain value then a symbol(like --,-,+/-,+ or ++) should be take. Atm my "best" solutio...

Can anyone think a good solution?
I came up with =IF(G4>MAX($D$4:$D$8),"N/A",INDEX($B$4:$B$8,INDEX(MATCH(G4,$C$4:$C$8,1),0,0),0)‌)
This formula will go in H4

Definitely something that can change the tome of a statement. I've gone back on at least a few occasions to add one when reading mt own comments and realizing that they could be misconstrued.
named ranges an INDEX might do it but would subscrive a UDF.

Yeah I can use Named range in the formula that i gave above but can that formula be made better. VBA, it is easy :)

I love it when an OP posts an image and I get to type the values so I can proof a formula!

9:50 AM
ditto

10:00 AM
Looking at it again, I would completely discard the *End* numbers in favor of a forward LOOKUP on numbers sorted ascending int the *Start* column. An IFERROR function will provide the means to access the value from column B. No mention of structured tables so all cell referenced you be literal.
Let me see what I can come up with once I get the data transcribed.

Yeah I saw the lookup suggested in the first comment but wanted to try without making any change to the Data Table

Is this a test?
=INDEX(B$4:B$999, MATCH(G5, C$4:C$999))
Once I got the data typed in it was pretty obvious.

Naiceeee! Much better than my formula :D

10:17 AM
An IFERROR wrapper might not even be necessary as it is unlikely that a score would be less than zero.

correct.
Wait.. I just found a problem with your formula
It will not give correct result for 101

At the risk of exhibiting or exercising hubris, this is SuperUser stuff. My ego usually tells me to comment an answer but my morales tell me to VTC, Off-Topic-Belongs on another site. I am constantly reviewing META threads on the subject to see where the current philosophy stands. Other users (as I've mentioned) contribute to the decision I make.

No it belongs to SO as well :) Let me search the meta link. You can post the answer if you wish to :)
Btw your formula doesn't give valid result for 101 unless you alter the table

Q: Slight Amendment to Close Reason

Siddharth Rout Questions asking for code must demonstrate a minimal understanding of the problem being solved. Include attempted solutions, why they didn't work, and the expected results. See also: Stack Overflow question checklist A small request i.e if it's possible to incorporate. Can the above bold li...

formula questions are very much on topic for SO

10:40 AM
So an IF would have to account for >100 and less than 0. Not really an issue for anyone that has *a minimum of understanding*.
I came over to SO for this very reason. I too tired of users that wanted 'turn-key' formulas shoved at them. I often show 'half-an-answer' in order to demonstrate a method or principle that should be understood before proceeding (and asking for more 'turn-key' solutions that they do not understand). If you teach a man to fish you feed him for the rest of his life. Give a man a fish and you feed him for the day.

I agree with this ideology :)
Did you see the metastck link?

I don't have a problem with someone asking to resolve a multiple column criteria or a fragmented cell range through worksheet formulas. As a matter of fact, I believe that the [tag;Excel] wiki should be specifically expanded to include complex formulas. I've even written some possible edits on that.
The problem I have is the on-hit-wonders hat want everything delivered on a platter because they think they authored a 'good question' without any of the programming effort that this site requests, nee requires.

True True :)

It sounds familiar. Please link if you have it. It's not the checklist isit?
Please review this and adjust your question through Edit to suit.

Q: Stack Overflow question checklist

Jon SkeetMy earlier blog post on how to write a good question is pretty long, and I suspect that even when I refer people to it, often they don't bother reading it. So here's a short list of questions to check after you've written a question (and to think about before you write the question): Have you d...

Yes I have seen this link

Hi gents. What - yet another SO thread all about formulae!

Hey Dave
Nah nothing to do about formula per se
This is just for the Stack where we can discuss Excel/.Net questions and share important views
you can visit anytime you want
what I have done is enabled the desktop notification on the right so that i get an alert when someone posts here. You may or may not opt for that.

<attempted humour give wrong>

<blushes>
Long time. How have you been?
We have Dennis(Jeeped) here who is also an excel MVP
Dennis meet Dave(Excel MVP).... Dave Meet Dennis(excel MVp)

Damn busy at work. Slowly getting head above water. I have been must curious as to who jeeped is?

Hey Rory :)

Hey Sid. :)

I have changed all your statuses to Room Owners so that if any MVP wants to be added and I am not here, then any of you can add them
Hey Rory

I always wanted my own room...

lol.. that line sounds so familiar :D
Objective of this Room: This is a Private room only for MVPs. In this room, MVPs can discuss importants post in Stack.. Be it Excel, .Net or any other technology. I don't think that in the beginning there will be that many discussions here but later on as more MVPs join, I am sure there will be lot of important discussions happening. Also here we can draw attention to specific threads which needs a different pair of eyes ;)

Rory: Can you star my above comment so that it shows on the right panel. I can't star my own comment
Cheers

Your wish is my command.

this way when a new MVP comes we don't have to explain him/her what is this forum about :D
so how have you been?

Pretty good. Very busy at work, which is good, and even a couple of clients on the side. :)

Awesome. every one is busy... Dave is busy but is managing to play tanks :D
BTW I am not sure if you know this but you can see all members of this room by clicking on info on the top right corner of the screen

I saw he was playing with his 2nd hand. Didn't want to ask what the first was doing...

ha ha ha
Do you know any other MVPs in Excel forum?
besides the one already added
I know Brad is here but is he Active?

1:20 PM
I don't think so. Unless Barry has finally been made one!

lemme quickly check his profile
Damn there are so many barrys
Do you know his profile id or link?
got it
nothing on his profile

I didn't think he had - I haven't seen his name on any announcements.

Brad is active looks like
Sent him a request

@Rory Was using SO Chat - hang on, maybe I was in that other chat room......
Sid - Brad was last seen in April 2014. Not so active.

8 hours later…
10:46 PM
Right then. I think I need a few moments to become familiar with rooms. I haven't really used them before and the user interface is not very intuitive. Is there a "how to" anywhere?
If I enable desktop notification, what does that actually do? Something on my Windows desktop? Or send an email?
