12:00 AM
@DJMcMayhem DJMcMayhemecyFace is better

OK. It isn't that well written since I banged it out in about 5 minutes...

@DmitryKudriavtsev am I the only one here w/o a blog?

No, I don't have one

Nope

@uoɥʇʎPʎzɐɹC No.

12:01 AM
> Actually, I was yelling and almost swearing at everyone. Don’t do drugs, kids.

:D that's great

@DmitryKudriavtsev your no. 1 site is area 51!?

@El'endiaStarman Hahaha

I'm hosting mine on a $5/month VPS, a $0.15 domain name, and WordPress.
@uoɥʇʎPʎzɐɹC No, it's PPCG with 429 rep.

12:02 AM
@DmitryKudriavtsev hm, chat displays it as a51
hm, what hoster?
haven't seen cheaper than WebFaction in a while

@DmitryKudriavtsev interesting read, thanks for writing and sharing :) hope it goes well!

@uoɥʇʎPʎzɐɹC No, that's parent account website

DigitalOcean $5 VPS with 512 MB RAM, 1 CPU, and 20GB SSD. The network is 100 mbit up/down. Domain name is a Namecheap .xyz domain from when they were doing a promotion.
SSL cert is free from Let's Encrypt.

@DmitryKudriavtsev :D cheap servers!
and I thought AWS was the cheapest...

I've tried to cache and optimize it as much as possible and I'm using Nginx as my web server.
AWS VMs are pretty damn expensive.
Also, try visiting dkudriavtsev.xyz/video

12:05 AM
@DmitryKudriavtsev goshdarn too much trust

@DmitryKudriavtsev don't be :3

lesson of the day: don't trust people with face avatars

@Quill

b....but why?

12:07 AM
@DmitryKudriavtsev meh, it was slightly funny anyway

"how to build a mobile ad with node.js"
ad I just saw...

Electron for mobile, I guess?

I have the stupidest idea ever
Compile php with emscripten
serve it with node.js
"Reversed Client/Server Architecture"

12:11 AM
compile as in transpile like typescript?

@ConorO'Brien what can I do you for?

nvm, it's source to source

5 mins ago, by uoɥʇʎPʎzɐɹC
lesson of the day: don't trust people with face avatars

No, I mean compile the interpreter, execute it in the browser, then shove the output into a full page iframe.

@uoɥʇʎPʎzɐɹC You've summoned more face avatars...

12:12 AM
@DmitryKudriavtsev oh lol
emscripten is source to source though...?

no.
it compiles llvm bitcode to asm.js

> Emscripten is a source-to-source compiler that runs as a back end to the LLV...
whaaaat
unity in html!

Someone compiled Unreal Engine with it and ran some game in it on a webpage

you can edit msgs

12:14 AM
Just been back to star this message:
1 hour ago, by Lynn
Can we put “ninja’d” in the messages that add nothing to the conversation list?

@trichoplax see my other starred message...

@trichoplax You could make a PR on github

Tech industry right now:

I thought I'd see how many others agree first, but I'm going to stop saying "ninjad" myself from ... now.

> FREE! EVERYTHING IS FREE!
jQuery is on GitHub.
GitHub uses jQuery.
INCEPTION!

12:17 AM
well, technically, github just hosts git repos. Only the web interface uses jQuery.

@trichoplax I don't really mind it. I'll probably continue saying it

As long as it's not used excessively, it can be fine

^
le @Downgoat has appeared!

Similarly to carets...it wasn't ever carets that was the problem, it was the caret chains

@NathanMerrill caret chains are annoying
never seen one myself tho

12:18 AM
@uoɥʇʎPʎzɐɹC I don't have a problem with most things until they are used often enough to be called a meme

@trichoplax soooo... you hate memes.

TNB w/ bureaucrats and gov't regulators:

s/hate/have a problem with/

> no rickroll. no ninja'd. no carets. no wassup. no yo. no slang. no geek stuff.

Yes. This sounds great.
2

12:20 AM
no geek stuff? lol

Well, except for that. That's hyperbole on his part though.

never agree to a hyperbole unless you actually agree with it :P

Well, the other parts were all fine

@ConorO'Brien It's kind of a grey area. xkcd oneboxes don't annoy me, but they would if they were more frequent

I've been trying to type in the Workman keyboard layout recently. Right now I'm at about 1/5 my QWERTY speed...

12:22 AM
whatever. I'm not getting pulled into the f-d up "politics" that is "TNB: to meme or not to meme." People are going to do what they want and I couldn't care less about it, so long as they aren't being a detriment to the health of the community.

I wasn't making a rule, just saying I think Lynn made a good point and it's worth discussing whether to add "ninjad" to the chatiquette

> detriment to the health of the community
That's the problem.
We shouldn't have had to pull in 5 additional ROs.
That to me sets off giant warning bells

@Doorknob Do you have an actual keyboard in that layout, or did you just swap the keys (so to speak)?

> I'm not getting pulled in...
So don't pull me in.

@Doorknob Yikes

@quartata We shouldn't have had to, but we absolutely did need to.

These last couple days on TNB were much more pleasant than the previous 4
3

@El'endiaStarman My laptop keyboard is still in QWERTY. :P

12:25 AM
@DJMcMayhem I know we did. And I'm saying that I consider the fact that we had to to mean that something is obviously going wrong
These memes and behavior have only really surfaced in the last year and with it is this turmoil
But there isn't really anything we can do about it other than do things like appoint ROs.
Which is great

what have the ROs actually done? I haven't noticed anything different :P

We have 15.7k messages posted in this week only. What would you expect other than noise?

The difference is them being there, not them doing anything so much I think.

so, the "teacher hovering over your desk" effect

12:27 AM
@ConorO'Brien I haven't been announcing to the room when I kick someone. I'm delighted if it's gone unnoticed :)

Of sorts.

Personally, I don't see much wrong with saying "ninja'd" in and of itself. "double ninja'd", "ninjago'd", "ninjorama", and the associated trains get old, but it's kinda like the caret thing. It happens, but it's not bad here or there.
4

@trichoplax I was about to follow it up with "things also have happened" :P

@trichoplax I feel like I missed something. And maybe that's for the better. :P

@Geobits I was about to post a caret to that because I absolutely agree, but that somehow feels inappropriate given the topic

12:28 AM
@ConorO'Brien He's kicked at least one person that I'm aware of.

say, @El'endiaStarman, would %asdf be like any string ending with asdf in SQL?

I think that works yes

@quartata Is it the person we're all thinking of?

@ConorO'Brien Yes the idea is to stop the problems before they start, so everyone else can just enjoy chatting

Probably

12:29 AM
@quartata oh. hey, the little avatar that I ignored is gone
I wonder if that's coincidental
:P

Personally I wouldn't exactly want to ban "ninja'd", but it does bug me when it's misused :/

@ConorO'Brien I've been gone for the weekend, so I'm sure you haven't seen me do anything at least :P

Guys.
Calm down.

Well, he did come back. It isn't permanent

@Geobits well, you're back! :D

12:29 AM
None of this is a problem.

@DmitryKudriavtsev I AM CALM /s

btw @DmitryKudriavtsev have you thought about -/ for simple calculator?

@ConorO'Brien goddamnit

12:31 AM
It seemed I missed all the Deep Dream fun. Not that mine turns out very well anyway ><

@ConorO'Brien G-g-g-guilty. I'm just a tongue and cheek guy, you know?

user image
4

@Geobits I like it

I like it

me too

12:32 AM
@Geobits that's pretty epic

It's kinda cool and all, but it's just not... I dunno.

@quartata >_> yes I am

@ConorO'Brien Is that the right query?

12:32 AM
@ConorO'Brien Phew... I thought I was going to be higher up that list :P

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ You're like, always at the top of these lists. :P

@trichoplax Me too :P

I'm #4 though. I do like that emoticon. :P

what's with all the :P

I mean, I don't think it's a bad thing to be on top of this list?

12:33 AM
@El'endiaStarman yeah

@Doorknob About you or me...?

it's fairly sad :P

There's a difference between one emote and twenty really

@trichoplax About myself, I meant

@quartata yes, it's just that I've been #1 on like 5/6 of these links. :P
>_>

12:33 AM
I use it to make it known that I'm kidding. It's hard to convey tone over the internet, and I use emotes as a replacement.
I did not need an emote there >_<

Yeah I don't think Conor's query looks right

That's pretty much what I use :P for too: to denote amusement and/or light-heartedness.

uh, guys
yes

12:34 AM
it's wrong

The LIKE clause is Conor's username?

gg
YAY!
I'm not first!

Oh man. Now I'm third.

congrats @El'endiaStarman

12:34 AM
I knew there was no way I wouldn't be on the list :P

.......well dang.

I did :p or @:P for the condition

That seems more right. I couldn't imagine I'd used it less than 120 times >_>

12:35 AM
I did not expect I'd be the number 1 user of :P at the end of a message. o.O

@Geobits lol
@El'endiaStarman i did. :P

@El'endiaStarman I guessed beforehand and you were in my top three, along with me and Sp
I am sixth tho :P

@ConorO'Brien @:P? Please don't tell me @ಠ_ಠ has a sibling. :P

Mine is about 5% of my total messages.

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ lol

12:36 AM
@El'endiaStarman If it helps, apparently I'm top if you change it to %:P% :)

@ConorO'Brien And gave us the wrong link too.

@ConorO'Brien :P

It's @El'endiaStarman fault, I swear!! manual updating scripts are the end of me!!!!

@El'endiaStarman how do you save the code?

press the permalink button
WHERE MSG.content ~* <X> is regex match, right?

12:38 AM
@Sp3000 truncate down. -/ returns -1.

oic
guess who is top for :D

@ConorO'Brien @El'endiaStarman could you eleven the link in this reply to the one on the starboard?

@ConorO'Brien Done.

@DmitryKudriavtsev Might be good to reply to Dennis' comment and update the spec with that

@ConorO'Brien Do you mean the other way around?

12:39 AM
ok

@trichoplax I don't think so
but it conveyed my intent so it should be okay. Thanks @El'endiaStarman

@ConorO'Brien Case-insensitive regex match, IIRC. Yep.

@ConorO'Brien I'm not sure anymore - but it worked out so I'll stop thinking :)

shit wat i do
gawddamnit

12:43 AM
@ConorO'Brien I'm safe from that list as I apologise rather than apologize ;)

@ConorO'Brien Apparently, I am not a very apologetic person. :P

@trichoplax it only adds 17 or so
@quartata wow. I've been here for what, 12 months? and tux only a month max. That doesn't surprise me.

@ConorO'Brien Yeah, I think I'm sorry more often than I apologise

@ConorO'Brien: How do I change the path in the URL without causing the page to be reloaded? location.pathname = ... causes the page to be reloaded, so you never see the results.

12:47 AM
@El'endiaStarman I would suggest moving the important information to the hash, so you could do location.hash = <info> I don't know about a way to modify the location without reloading. You could perhaps auto-run the results on page load

@El'endiaStarman window.location?

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ window.prop is equal to prop

Yeah, the proper way to do it is location.hash = ..

Well, that would break all current permalinks.
Hmm. I suppose I could figure out a way to keep the old ones and switch over to the hash method.

12:50 AM
No, not really
Just do http://ppcg.starmaninnovations.com/#<thing>
it would be the main page
and you can keep all the previous pages made

So much better than mine :(

@uoɥʇʎPʎzɐɹC wat no he hasn't?

Dammit I'm fainting
@ConorO'Brien Should I drink an unknown potion if I'm about to starve and don't have food?

@DJMcMayhem is this about nethack? if so I know literally nothing about the game except that it uses numbers to move

12:59 AM
... :(

@ConorO'Brien I have a sense of deja vu...

@DJMcMayhem how far are you in starvation?
weak, fainting, etc

@trichoplax it's actually not teh same gif :P

Well, I was fainting but then I ate an egg

fainting then do it
oh

1:01 AM
Now I'm hungry

that works
@DJMcMayhem don't
hungry has a bit of time keft

@DJMcMayhem NO NO NO. THATS A BAD IDEA WAT

@ConorO'Brien I know - hence the delay in me finding them ;)

@DJMcMayhem go kill something and eat it's body

Aw, and now I'm weak again
There's nothing to kill!

1:02 AM
@DJMcMayhem keep wandering around

yay, a gecko!

@DJMcMayhem are you on NAO?

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Wanna hop on the nethack room?

@El'endiaStarman everytime a query finishes on TNBDE my browser crashes ;_; y u do dis to safari

1:04 AM
@Downgoat There's a pretty good chance you're running the broken version. I thought location.pathname would do what I want, but noooo...
I'm in the process of coding up a better permalink system.

:/ now everytime i run a query it finishes and then refreshes page with different permalink so i cant see results :|

@Downgoat Yeah, that's what I'm talking about.

;_;

@El'endiaStarman ...haha, that phrase is usually said in a very different tone...

@El'endiaStarman :D I found fix
@quartata ._ :|
;_; crossed out ._. is ._. with hair

1:10 AM
> Yeah, that's what I'm talking about!

> Yeah, that's what I'm talking about!
btw the emoticons SQL query could make an amusing classification challenge, if not a bit easy
I'm almost certain some of the :p messages of mine are probably test CJam code which prints each line of an array at the end

Uh, yeah... umm... mine too >_>

@Sp3000 could also be a ternary as in: foo?bar:print baz

@Downgoat but the query searches for :p at end
@Sp3000 well, I think the SQL search is over the raw HTML, not over text

I have variable named p prehaps
maybe add ([\sA-Za-z]|^) before

1:25 AM
oooh potential challenge: Given a string of 3 random characters, determine if its an emoticon

@ConorO'Brien Correct, message contents are all raw HTML.

nailed it

Still working on better permalinks.

@El'endiaStarman how much space does the DB take up? Would it be feasible to have two columns, one for text, the other for HTML?
it would solve our :response query problem

it wouldn't be too hard to do a transformation on the html, would it?

1:32 AM
:responses are pretty tough
not impossible, as we do have the query id
but it requires a join

@NathanMerrill pg_dump produces 133 MB.
The majority of that will be message contents.
Also, I really don't want to reparse the whole transcript. Takes several hours at minimum.

it also makes a bunch of queries easier, as you can do a LIKE statement without putting a % at the beginning

Not sure how having text-only contents would help. You'd still need that % in most cases.

its fine, just a suggestion :)
although, without reparsing, you could generate an additional table: "Replies"
a table that joins messages and messages

I could, but that's easy enough in SQL.
If I made that into a separate table, it'd require updating every time new content was added.

1:41 AM
it is? it seems rather tough to me. For @name replies you need to identify the most recent message from that person, and for :message_id its simpler, but requires string->int

Err...do you know about the rid column?

I think I broke google translate

What's the problem with that?

"š" is not a french letter, at least, not in this context.

It's a feature.

1:48 AM
@El'endiaStarman what? ignore me :)

The goal is to force people to learn french

It's 5 AM
And I'm doing this:
0
