I think those are poor directions for self defense training as they miss the issues of multiple opponents, weapons, and terrain... BUT, useful self defense training requires working against a resisting opponent at some point. That may mean mostly drills and conditioning with a high contact sparring session once in a while.
However, notice that your question isn't about high contact sports, or sparring, but you've mentioned martial arts in general. So... it's not well framed for anything you're talking about here.
