1:19 AM
methinks y'alls are morning people. No one here at night, when I'm here. :(

1:59 AM
I'm a night person.

4 hours later…
6:05 AM
@J.Musser: Hi there!
@liam: Morning!
Morning All!
@Everything: Thanks, and its great to see the way questions are answered and answers are appreciated. With some active users like you and @liam and @Rory and @Ara and BenediktBauer, we are growing slow but steady :-)

6:25 AM
Hi @Weda
7
Q: Walking through a Thigh-high snow

WedaPashiI have far less experience in trekking where there is snow. I believe walking through snow and through Ice are two different techniques. Is there some sort of safe technique to walk on such snow with nearly 30 degree slope and winds? I wonder if I would be able to take the same route that I open ...

When is your trip to Saser Kangri?
@BenCrowell seems to read really a lot about the mountains, also scientific books. Asked him for the source because this really would be a shock for me (see his comment in that topic).
Ah well he did post an answer and says it there

Morning guys

Morning @Aravona
And good bye, have to work now ;(
Nice day to all of you!

@Everything: Umm, the trek was planned for this September, but the plan got busted thanks to an office work on-site
I strongly admire @BenCrowell for his answers, definitely a wise guy!
@Everything: Have a good mate!
@Ara: Morning :) May day started with a punctured tyre!

1 hour later…
7:51 AM
@Weda that sucks
I was actually still in bed when you said that lol...

@J.Musser I'm a start of day and end of day kind of person, with brief check ins through the day - but I'm in Scotland, so may be in a very different timezone to you
:-)
Morning all
@WedaPashi as @Ara said - that sucks. Happened to me two weeks ago - on way from work to a gig, with all the kit in the car :-(

8:06 AM
@Rory: It sucks when you are really upto something.
@Rory: Though, it was neither my car (and, I don't owe one yet), nor my bike. It was my Bicycle!

@WedaPashi quick 2 minute repair then :-)

@Rory: Yeah it was :-)

Still not the best start to any day, though

Yeah, that true when you are really in a hurry (as you woke up late), and some Jap clients waiting for you in a conference room :D Bad way to start!

Dentist next week... Yay

8:15 AM
@Ara: Tooth Ferry? :P

@Weda do you mean Fairy? A ferry is a boat...
But lol no... Probably the evil tooth drilling goblin.

@Ara: Oh, mis-spelled. I obviously meant Fairy. was a bit too late to edit it.
Okay, off to roof with the sensor, again. See ya later!

8:33 AM
@Weda that misspelling made my morning :) have fun with the sensor!

@WedaPashi the tooth ferry - takes teeth across the river Sensodyne to tooth heaven

@RoryAlsop lol!!
Oh... That gave me your full name as a suggestion... On the mobile browser. That's new

@Aravona ooh - that's a good update then

@RoryAlsop did you have a good weekend btw? I've been rather awol

@Aravona rather relaxing thanks. Very little done - kids Halloween parties etc
How about you?

8:42 AM
@Ara: Thanks to rain :) No roof-running!
@Rory: LOL @ the tooth ferry - takes teeth across the river Sensodyne to tooth heaven

This weekend is the busier one - two gigs, 700 miles driving etc

@Rory: Sounds exciting! :-)

@RoryAlsop wow sounds like two great weekends. We have fireworks in the garden this weekend

I've been using "Load Ferry" term quite regularly for quite some time now (withing the group that discuss our excursion plans and schedules for mountaineering in Nepal early next year).. may be thats y the fuss about Ferry inplace of Fairy :D

@WedaPashi nice that you don't have to go out on the roof

8:48 AM
@Ara: :-)
Its actually so boring up there.
And, when I am up there with the sensor, I feel more like a Meteorologist than a Firmware guy :D

9:03 AM
@WedaPashi haha that's kinda cool though

@Ara: Hows the day going?

@WedaPashi good. Battling with JSON now
But it's working pretty well so I'm happy.

@Ara: Glad to hear that!

@WedaPashi yours?

@Ara: Got better since I am not going to the roof. :D But, the sweet girl on the other side of the desk (who keeps on passing me chocolates) is non leave today :(

9:19 AM
@WedaPashi awww

9:30 AM
@WedaPashi lol you shouldn't have bothered putting a bounty on my question...

@Ara: LOL, not an issue. Still worth the investment. Why can't I award the bounty to the asker :D

@WedaPashi @RoryAlsop @Liam was it a subjective question? I know the guy I met up with said to use gear for almost every tree...

@Ara: TBH, I have climbed trees so many times for various reasons, but have never used a tree climbing equipment, neither have seen anyone in India using something like that. But, that said, there are so many things which are a bit different in India and your place. So, I do feel like its worth knowing how these are used, so this sounds like a valid question here (Thats a personal opinion)

9:51 AM
@WedaPashi is this the one who knows about my band?

@WedaPashi yeah maybe, to me I just wanted like ' oh over 10m its a good idea to use gear' not a well falling over can kill you too answer O.o

@Aravona What's a subjective question?
I was going to reply to your tree climbing question but I haven't had time yet! :)

@Liam the tree climbing question, Vorac decided it was subjective and just said get over climbing a tree a bit at a time... Nothing to do with equipment

@Aravona Do you want to know what equipment to use? I'm not sure that;s in the question as it stands?

@Liam no not really, though that is of interest to me, but Vorac basically didnt say use any equipment at all, just climb, or that's how it read

10:04 AM
@Aravona yeah, that's not a great answer

Though I've only read through his answer once whilst my head is full of JSON

It's boils down to, "you cross the road don't you?"
@Aravona who's Json?
;)
@Aravona Donovan? He's a dreamboat....

@Liam haha ;) and yeah it does...
A long winded, you cross the road... Well yeah but my mother used to send me to the play park woth a crash helmet on too!!
I was a clumsy child....

@Aravona we were allowed to go play up the top of the field...where there was a quarry....with old mine carts, rails, twisted metal spikes etc... and the assumption was that we would be home for dinner, and if we hurt ourselves it was our own fault :-)

10:19 AM
@RoryAlsop oh that's how it was when I was like 6+ but when I was around 3-4 and my sister took me to the playground I'd always bump my head!
My mum got fed up and just sent me off with my bike helment on
No more bumps then lol

@Aravona ahh - remember when playgrounds were all concrete and metal. None of this rubber matting they have now :-)

@RoryAlsop yeah I temember having a metal climbing frame at school but they ripped it down because of health and safety!

@Aravona LOLZ
@RoryAlsop There used to be this slide in Prestatyn, they pulled it down in the 90's. This thing was enormous, like 15m easy. It had metal bars around the top so you didn't fall out, it was aweseom

@Aravona I need to see if I can find a photo of our primary school playground. It had a concrete steam train (that everyone bashed their head on), a concrete hill with concrete bumps on it that used to be a deathtrap in winter
@Liam brilliant

@Liam @RoryAlsop living before Health and Safety.

10:36 AM
@Aravona when I were young...etc

11:01 AM
@Liam past tense? Still am. Plan to be young until I feel old ;)

room topic changed to The Base Camp: Living before health and safety [height] [religion] [speelin-nazzi] [whatswrong-with-icescrews] [zoorbing]

@Liam lol love our topics here...
@RoryAlsop @Liam fireworks this weekend?

11:23 AM
@Aravona I will have fireworks on stage, yes :-)
We are headlining halloween gig in Aberdeen, and part of a halloween celebration on Sat in Orkney

11:34 AM
@Aravona I have not given it much thought actually?
It's not bonfire night till weds?

@RoryAlsop oh that sounds awesome
@Liam yeah weds, we are doing fireworks in the garden this weekend and going to some the weekend after lol

@Rory: No, That girl is prettier :D (In reference to is this the one who knows about my band? )

@WedaPashi a girl can be as pretty as anything but also dumb as a rock :P

@Aravona speaking from experience?
2

@Aravona That's how I like my girls... ;)

11:46 AM
@Dyna: LOL mate!

@Dynadin I'm not dumb as a rock, your mistake because I'm not pretty eithermuahaha
@Liam lol!
Don't you have a girlfriend though @Liam??

@Ara: She is pretty! And she is definitely not a programmer, so there are less chances that she is a geek!

@WedaPashi lol not all geeks are programmers though! Ok I am a programmer but I'm also a gamer and a trekkie...

@Aravona you are both pretty and clever, speed of a brick though.

@RoryAlsop completely forgot... Saw your psn account on minecraft the other night and now have brought it because we couldn't resist lol...

11:49 AM
@Ara: Gamer! Thats a bit unusual for a girl, (at least in India)

@WedaPashi the trouble is she is too good. An annoyingly good shot.

@DYnadin: Oh! R you a gamer to0?
The best way to avoid conflict is, play in the same team! :P

@WedaPashi yeah I capped halo 4 pretty easy on the multiplayer and I'm currently maxing my second subclass on Destiny... I usually finish top 3 of a cruicble match against other people of I'm sober / not in need of a wee. Can't concentrate on a shooter game if I need a wee

@WedaPashi That I am. My strategy is better than @Aravona but in open combat I have no chance.

@J.Musser I stopped checking at night since the chat is usually deserted by then :P

11:53 AM
And, @soph is here! Has she missed the class, again?

@weda good morning ;)

@soph-e morning!

@weda nope, I have class in about 8 hours :P
@ara Good morning ara :)
scratch that, my class starts in 10 hours
ugh

@soph: okay :-) Thats like 4 movies!

I need to make sure i'll be awake when class start....& ends
hahaha
i'll just get coffee before class i guess

11:54 AM
@Aravona hahaha - Admittedly I only play it on PC. It's the kids who play it on PS Vita etc

@soph: To stay up? Does it work??

@weda no time for movies, I need to get some study done :o

@Rory: Yeah, I bet your kids would too fast for you to beat them on PS!

@WedaPashi Nah - they love the creative aspects, whereas I can't be bothered building amazing houses - I just like taunting the mobs

I am more of a Warcraft gaming guy. Not so good, not bad either!

11:56 AM
@Aravona Yeah, she's annoyingly intelligent

@liam: LOL :D
@soph: Exams?

@RoryAlsop I was surprised with how good it was on the ps4, expected worse

@Aravona I still prefer keyboard/mouse to any console input for that type of game (I only like consoles for driving or guitar/music games)

@Liam annoyingly so? Oh dear.

@weda the exams never seem to stop :(

11:59 AM
@RoryAlsop usually I'd say the same, touchpad on the ps4 makes it a bit easier.

I don't understand why i'm awake right now, usually I just can't manage to wake up early, and now I have no reason to be early and I'm just not tired. So weird!

@soph: Oh, thats bad.
@soph: You've got in The Base Camp mood!

oh man what I wouldn't give to be at a base camp right now
they have the best sunrises
any mountain, it would be awesome to be outside right now :P

@soph: :D I meant this The Base Camp (chatroom)

yeah I know
but you made me think about mountains
:P

12:02 PM
@soph-e yeah would be good to get out today. Office.

@soph: :P Glad that I made you think about mountains.

@ara yup, indoor gets real stuffy sometimes
and by sometimes I mean a lot of the times
maybe I should stop trying to become a programmer and find something that'll get me outside and pay a lot. Is there a thing that meets those two criteria? :P

A mountain guide!

I'm not sure rangers have that good a salary, sadly :/ Although when you're a ranger, why would you need a lot of money ;)
@weda mountain guides do okay, but I don't think they can work until their late 50s. Also, it's so dangerous! :P
@weda when you're a mountain guide, you end up knowing a lot of people who die on the mountains

@soph: Umm, thats one way of looking at it.
A mountain guide usually save more guys than he heard about dead!

12:06 PM
That's true!

I am rather a bit against settling myself up as a mountaineer who climbs for money!

@weda I'm not really thinking about it in terms of getting rich, but if I get a career it's got to be able to sustain me through my old age, just in case I get there, y'know?

@soph: :-)

maybe I am thinking about it all wrong :P That's part of the fun, figuring it all out, right? ;)

Yeah it is!
And, the base camp is the best place to talk about that!

12:11 PM
hahahaha is it? ;)

:)
You should have been here y'day.. when we talked about religion! :D

yeah I scroll through from time to time, s'pretty cool stuff :)
It's always fun to see some civilized discussion about religion, seems all too rare these days

Yeah

I recently made a friend who happens to be muslim, and it's fun when he shares some bits about his religion. I don't usually get to hear about it a lot!

Reading about religions and religious aspects puts me into boredom!
As long as Humanity is concerned, I am least bothered about religion :-)
Being born is a specific religion, race is not in you control, right? :D

12:20 PM
hahaha I think religion has a pretty big part of our society, whether we like it or not
so discussing it in small doses is okay

Sad (Thats a personal opinion), but true!

maybe I'm biased because I'm in a culture that's not very religious at all, so I spend most of my time not hearing about religion ;)
when I do hear about it, I end up finding it interesting :P
It is unfortunate that there are a lot of conflicts that seem to stem from religious beliefs though :(

@soph-e very true, and yet for the most part they have the same fundamentals, be good, treat others as you wish to be treated etc... It's human perspectives that seem to cause problems.
2

@Aravona ^^ this

@ara very good point!

12:30 PM
@Rory: ^ is Ex-OR!

@WedaPashi So does that make ^^ the same as ROT-26? :-)
(I've not actually seen that notation for XOR)

@Rory: Operator! | for Or, & for AND and ^ Ex-OR, ~ for NOT
ROT13 is what I've heard of, whats ROT-26?
Rotate by 26 places?

12:44 PM
Guys, check this out: stackoverflow.com/a/769443
Pure Epic!

@weda I read this a while ago, pretty funny :P
" If there are two different ways of doing something, PSD will do both, in
// different places. It will then make up three more ways no sane human would
// think of, and do those too."

hahaha
This one is also worth a read: stackoverflow.com/questions/652788/…
Specially the comments over the accepted answer

@weda yup, read those too ;)
"#define retrun return" hehe

haha

In Soviet Russia, program compiles YOU!

12:52 PM
@soph: Thats was epic!
@soph: Weekend plans?

@weda studying chemistry!
Also I have class friday from 6pm to 9pm, and saturday from 9am to 4pm
:(

@soph: You've sunday!

Sunday is going to be for studying!
Unless I go visit family, still not sure :/

Okay, sounds good

I need to get rid of my cough so that I can go to the rock climbing gym again!

12:58 PM
I'll be fixing up my bicycle on Saturday, will travel home on Sat night and study on Sunday.
@soph: So you've joined the gym? Thats great!

@WedaPashi yup - meaning no change :-)

I did one month of rock climbing where I start building calluses and getting strength into my hands and arms, and then I stopped for a month because I got a cold that's not going away :(
@weda all my calluses are gone now, it makes me sad!

@Rory: :-) You are insidious!

but it's okay, I'll just have to work to get them back ;)

@soph-e :-)

1:01 PM
@soph: Okay.

It's half the fun of rock climbing, building strength & whatnot

Okay, I am off for a while, roof-running!

the other half is figuring out the problems/routes
@weda have fun! ;)

@soph: Good! :-)

1:12 PM
Anyone got some good references for IIS that isn't iis.net/learn?

1:38 PM
@RoryAlsop really good info in that answer thank you!

@Aravona no problem :-) I knew the HSE would have something on it, so just had a wee browse around
It did surprise me there was no 'anything above 2 metres' type statement

@RoryAlsop yeah that surprises me also
I upvoted your answer as the info is still very good

@Aravona I guess they are worried about someone falling from 1.9m and hurting themselves, and suing the council....
@Aravona cheers

@RoryAlsop always a pleasure, and yeah I guess so. To me it's actually a really intereating subject regardless of whether there is a definitive yes or no answer.
Though in that regard much of the outdoors is common sense answers lol

2:10 PM
@ara you could also try bouldering crash bads, although I'm not sure that'd help you at all if you fall into branches :P

@soph-e lol

@soph-e Bit expensive, a boulderting pad's like £100

@Liam or make your own. I'm tempted to use one of these:

@RoryAlsop ha ha

With the added benefit that if you hit it really hard, you may get a wonderful snow explosion
(joke)

2:16 PM
@RoryAlsop Not a very even landing surface...?

@Liam Oh, they are - it's just a huge bean bag. They are flat until you arrange them

@RoryAlsop The money I could of saved?!

@Liam we got one of their huge ones. Awesome for two adults or three kids to sprawl on
and they do the same in an outdoors version

@RoryAlsop those are awesome!!

I got's one of these
Banana fingers messed up one of my orders and gave me 15% off so I ordered one

2:22 PM
@Liam there are a few geocaching groups that get you 10-20% off cotswold outdoors

@Aravona Yeah, I get 15% from my bouldering gym card. or 10% from my BMC membership.

And Snowboarding UK membership gets you between 15 and 25% off various outdoors'y sites

@RoryAlsop I get 10% off snow and ice, problem is they're about 20% more expensive than anywhere else....

I had a limited 15% with British canoeing

You seen these
Really, really cheap stuff
Flashsales if your familiar with them
Mt girlfriend just bought these:
Bargain!
If anyone joins, please use my link
Gives me £5 :)

2:32 PM
I think this would suit me: thebikerooms.com/giordana-fusion-bib-shorts.html don'tcha think @Aravona

@Liam I may do that. I can't even access the page from work. Which is putting me off slightly.

@RoryAlsop I bought some snowboard gogles. They're 100% legit. I heard about them on a Radio 4 program where they had the MD talking about his business model on some business program.
They buy stock from people who order too much and sell it mega discounted. They also sell stuff that isn't common in the UK but is in places like France, etc.
You often have to wait a bit for delivery, like 4-6 weeks but thats why it's so cheap

@Dynadin ew
@Liam reselling other peoples stock isn't that uncommon.

@Aravona and there was me thinking you would appreciate it.

@Dynadin hmmmmm - possibly not attractive on any man
including the model on that page

2:43 PM
@Dynadin How did they get a photo of me?!

@RoryAlsop Lol!

:P

@Liam spy cam drone

@liam: LOL :D

@Aravona Bloody spay cam drones...

2:56 PM
Okay, just booked for summit of these two in May 2015. IMF permissions sorted out just today!
1. Hanuman Tibba 6002m
2. Deo Tibba 6001m
:)
Yippiee!

@WedaPashi great!

And talks for the 3. Indrasan (6.2K m) are on!

@WedaPashi Cool

:)

3:23 PM
I be off now. Ta ta.

@Dynadin see you in an hour

user116848
Oh, hi all.

user116848
Oh

@Arrowfar afternoon

@Arrowfar haya
try again

3:34 PM
@WedaPashi you're doing some massive climbs and I just want to get Scarfell Pike and Ben Nevis under my belt lol...

@Arrowfar hiya

user116848
@Aravona Afternoon. Hello!

user116848
@Liam Hello! :)

user116848
Soph-e's English is pretty good.

user116848
I am reading the room's transcript

user116848
3:42 PM
:D

user116848
I have to usually think for some seconds before writing my thoughts here though,

user116848
In English I mean.

@Arrowfar I'd assumed @soph-e 's first language was English, pretty sure it is though she can correct me if I am wrong.

user116848
@Aravona I don't know. Maybe :D

user116848
Your first language is English though, right? @Aravona

user116848
3:46 PM
Yeah, you sound like a native.

@Arrowfar yes indeed, British English.

user116848
nods

Not to be confused with American/International English but often is lol...
About 90% the same nowadays but never ask an Englishman to remove his pants, you'll be surprised.

user116848
@Aravona Okay :D

user116848
Yeah, I know most folks here speak British English. I hear you guys use words like 'pub', 'mobile', etc. In other SE chat rooms where there are lot of American folks I don't hear such words often :)

3:49 PM
Lol, my view on languages is that I usually can't speak someone elses so can't expect them to just speak mine perfectly... And if I give theirs ago II'd have to accept help lol
@Arrowfar probably because @Liam @RoryAlsop and I all live in the UK though pub and mum etc are common in Austrailia and New Zealand too.

user116848
I see.

user116848
Yeah, they speak UK type English too there in Australia.

Lol our reach went far

user116848
@Aravona Yep! Rule the word, eh? :D

user116848
New Zealand is a beautiful place.

3:54 PM
Anyone here want free money?
Too bad, cause I don't give people money. :)

user116848
No, we don't free money. Because free money is always a scam LOL

user116848
Hi Musser

user116848
"If only money grew in trees".

user116848

@Arrowfar If you pay enough money, you can get anything for free. :P

user116848
4:00 PM
Dammit, I hate 20 seconds edit time. Or whatever 'seconds' that is.

@Arrowfar Hiya!

user116848
@J.Musser haha Funny!

@Arrowfar It's fun, though.

user116848
@J.Musser Yeah, only for rich folks! :)

user116848
So, I have heard some people think (which is very wrong, I know) that money plants bring money.

user116848
4:04 PM
Ridiculous, right!

user116848
Epipremnum aureum - a tropical vining plant found in Northern Australia through Malaysia and Indochina into China, Japan, India and Pakistan. Lunaria annua - a herbaceous biennial, grown for its attractive spring flowering and dried silver seed pod middles Crassula ovata - a small plant with fleshy leaves, also known as a jade plant or a friendship tree Pilea peperomioides - a small plant with very round, dark green leaves, also known as Chinese Money Plant, Lefse Plant, or Missionary Plant and is from the south of China...

@Arrowfar It's not ridiculous. I know someone who made several dollars a year, multiplying and selling money plants out front.

user116848
@J.Musser Yeah, selling them etc. Sure.

user116848
I was talking about the myth of just keeping the plant at home and doing nothing with it.

@Arrowfar Yeah, I know, I was bein' an idiot on purpose. ;)

user116848
4:07 PM
haha

ɐɥɐɥ

8 hours later…
11:50 PM
@Aravona My first language is french. Spent the last 3 years in english though, so now I have a hard time switching back to french when I talk to friends!
@Arrowfar that picture reminded me of i.imgur.com/kgthn7H.jpg
