Q: Can nociceptors die because of too much mechanical stress?

inf3rnoIn martial art people hit their body (e.g., with small bean bags) to become more insensitive to pain. Can the sensory neurons die during this procedure? I think this is just an urban legend. Instead, I think the skin receptors desensitize, but they don't degenerate by the constant mechanical stre...

@StevenJeuris beat me to it (-: your instincts are good--you are definitely creating a skill (otherwise your performance wouldn't change!) but it's questionable whether that skill is useful anywhere outside that particular game
 
Ideally also include one reference to a website, or paper on the topic.
Just to indicate you browsed around at least 5-10 minutes before posting the question, and possibly to refine your question to be more specific (as in, what do you not understand about the source you link to, or what do you want more authorative details on).

@StevenJeuris I've edited my question to include my research so far. I hope it's OK. This is worlds away from my area of expertise, the jargon in these papers is daunting!
