I also still particularly like the regular chat events idea, although it might be difficult to find suitable topics which are workable for everyone.

There's a bit of a chicken and the egg problem in there as well, though. Activities lead to activity and retention.

Yup, realized that as I said it as well.

In any case, I gotta hop to bed, but I think the most important thing is just to get some kind of chat going. Behind most strong online communities, there's an IRC channel with a core of regulars.
