I always figured that was bollocks, because I don't see any reason why your brain would flip it. Was wondering whether there was empirical evidence that shows this to be true. ... Will compose it tomorrow. :)

12:12 AM
@Josh Thanks; you certainly have my vote for being a temporary moderator.

Oh what the heck ... I posted it now while it was still fresh. :)

Q: Has it been proven that the brain flips the images perceived by your eyes?

Steven JeurisThe following is a common scientific statement, which you don't have to google long for to find: The eye views images upside-down in the manner of a camera lens, but our brains reinterpret this input to allow us to see things the correct way up. My first question is quite straightforw...

Have been philosophing/looking for actual resources on this for ages. Although admittedly up until recently I didn't know how to look for proper scientific sources.
I feel neurobiology is a proper tag? Or should it be changed?

12:34 AM
@JeromyAnglim Thanks! You have my vote as well.

@JeromyAnglim: Haha, I was staring at that title thinking .. "this can be improved", but eventually gave up. Thanks! :)

12:53 AM
Oh hell no, it got a down vote. :) Haters ...
Just because it's not very scientific doesn't make it a bad question. You can't imagine how often I did this discussion, and how many people believe the brain flips images. The internet is definitely a better place with this question and it didn't deserve a down vote. :) But oh well! Sleep, cya tomorrow.

@StevenJeuris +1 from me

@StevenJeuris I was the downvoter, but I removed my downvote after our discussion on the question, since I realized I was misreading it.
I want to advertise the following meta question, since I think it is important to resolve:

well, don't I feel dumb for linking to it when it is auto-linked by the chatbot... fail on my part -_-

6 hours later…
12:23 PM
@ArtemKaznatcheev I will answer this later but yes you have some excellent points
@ArtemKaznatcheev hahaha, don't feel dumb, @StackExchange just thought it was so important it was worth saying twice! ;-)

Looking at my question title today I'm still not happy with it. Any other suggestions?
@Josh: I received a protem mod consideration mail.

eyewire.org "You will be at the forefront of scientific exploration as you chart the entangled branches of those tree-like cells called neurons. Join us to explore the eye's jungle."

1:52 PM
@StevenJeuris Congrats! (I did too, btw)

@Josh I'm guessing they checked the top users list from meta.

Probably so
@StevenJeuris I think the question title is fine.

I replied three more suitable candidates are already mentioned in the meta post, linking to it.
Pretty soon my thesis will claim all my time (and more). :)
I signed up for eyewire. Loving the concept. :) It's in line with SE ideas, using the community to achieve great things.

2:36 PM
@StevenJeuris I understand. You've already shown good dedication to this community and I appreciate your efforts!
@StevenJeuris this eyewire?

Crowdsourced science!

\o/\o/\o/\o/\o/\o/\o/\o/

Huh, if protemp mails were sent out guess I wasn't picked

@BenBrocka that... seems unlikely and unfair...

sam
3:50 PM
Is here can create new room for chatting? Thank you~

@sam Yes, anyone can create new rooms. Just go here

sam
Thank you~^^

@sam You're very welcome!
You can also start a new room with anyone in the room you're in

sam
oh~

Just another helpful chat feature!

sam
3:56 PM
cool~~
you seem an expert in cognitive science~

@sam haha, thanks. I'm not, I'm an expert at programming, but am fascinated by Cognitive Sciences!

sam
cool~I'm also a learner~
What programming language do you use?

Stack Exchange is a great place to learn! The model works really well, because other places on the internet tend to be filled with incorrect information. Our voting system helps the best answers rise to the top!
@sam I'm a PHP and JavaScript developer by trade, but i also know Ruby, Perl, C/C++ and more

sam
I use C++ more than others. I try to use cognitive science on robotics~

I love robotics. I took and then later TAed a robotics course in High School using MIT 6.270 kits

sam
4:02 PM
So just begin to learn cognitive science~^^
TAed?What's that mean?

I was a teaching assistant (TA)

sam
haha
I see

Means the year after I took the course as a student, I returned to help teach the next year's students

sam
So are you also a student?
in MIT?

haha, no, this was a long time ago
This was a course I took in High School, but the professor worked at MIT and let us use the MIT 6.270 kits

sam
4:05 PM
So you have been in MIT,and now graduated,right?

The actual MIT 6.270 program was for actual MIT students. I was nowhere near smart enough / good enough acidemically to get into MIT

sam
seems great~

I just got to play with the same toys :-D
I watched a 6.270 competition run by actual MIT students. Their robots put my robot to total shame, they were way way way better than mine!

sam
haha~I also have no talent to go there.
So are you still interest in robotics area?

Nope, I'm not. I'm a web application developer

sam
4:10 PM
Seems a good company~

Thanks!

sam
How long have you been there?

Since 2003

sam
wow,about 10 years~

Yeah

sam
4:11 PM
I only use php in master degree~XD
Because I go into a search engine lab~

Very cool!

sam
Thank you~Now I change my way to robotics and try to integrate search engine's concept and cognitive science in there~
I want to build a series of robots which really help everyone~

Have you see this? Someone showed me these really cool robots the other day:

sam
oh,great~Let me see~~

Saw the quodrotors, pretty awesome

4:16 PM
lmao at this comment:
> stop making these things. Freaking skynet will kill us all.
@BenBrocka I know, I wish I could build cool stuff like that!

sam
wow Quadrotors army~
haha
Freaking skynet~

Obligatory meme:

sam
I know some institute cooperate with ROS can also do robotics group planning~
What's that ad means?

It's not an ad, it's an XKCD comic. It's just a joke :-)

sam
Oh~haha
Do you know Ubermensch? Recently, we try to contact each other,and want to share more about cognitive science and robotics.

4:24 PM
I don't know him personally but I have been following his contributions to this site
I thought he was here in chat once but I cannot @-complete his name, so I may be mistaken
You can start a chat room and invite him in using comments, if you like

sam
comments?

Yes. Create a chat room, find one of his questions/answers, and post a comment on that question/answer inviting him to chat, including a link to the room you created

@sam Yup! Except it's in the wrong site; A mod can correct that

sam
So are you also can go into that room?
oh
great~~

4:29 PM
I flagged the room for moderator attention

hola
seems it's been done, not by me

@Josh I hate comments like that because a fair amount of people will say that with a straight face

@Sathya Hey there Sathya!
I make one little flag and every single mod comes running, LOL

LOL
the flag gets seen by mods & 10k+ users throughout the network, whoever are on chat

rep based spidey senses

4:35 PM
So now that you're here @Sathya let's all start psychoanalyzing you XD

oo

I vote he's totally crazy. Certifiable. INSANE!!! What's everyone else's psychological diagnosis? ;-)

please go ahead :P

4:47 PM
@Josh ROFL!

XD
It's okay, @Sathya you know I'm insane as well ;-)
CRAZY PEOPLE FTW!

that is true.

Without crazy people there would be no need for psychiatry! ;-)

without crazy people, the world would be boring, no?
:P

Absolutely! Right everyone?
crickets

4:54 PM
haha

sam
@josh I forget to ask,what area of cognitive science you really interest in?

@sam I'm interested mostly in psychology, developmental psychology, and AI

sam
So you just reading books about them?

3 messages moved from cognitive_on_robotics

5:11 PM
@Josh what's the purpose of the other room

@Sathya which, cognitive_on_robotcs?

yes

47 mins ago, by sam
Do you know Ubermensch? Recently, we try to contact each other,and want to share more about cognitive science and robotics.
@Sathya ^^^ It's a room for Sam and Ubermensch

ah
my bad

no problem @Sathya
I just cleaned it up because otherwise Ubermensch will wonder what all that chatter was

5:14 PM
cool
I thought it was a dupe room or the like

This room might be a dupe, but I wasn't sure where to move my discussion with Sam to
Okay, lunchtime for me.

bon appetite

2 hours later…
6:51 PM
@Josh You sure make a lot of rooms :P

@BenBrocka Surely there must be a psychological reason to that. Perhaps because he is that talkative he needs the extra space to satisfy his needs. ;p

He's a chat room hoarder

7:04 PM
@BenBrocka haha, yes, I do sometimes
sam wanted a room for him and Ubermensch, and when I created it he filled it up with questions about how chat works =b

2 hours later…
8:46 PM
Bah, I just messed up my Gravatar

@Josh Hey, I only just noticed now. That looks remarkably a lot like a style which Microsoft uses for Visual Studio.
I believe one of the earlier version.

@StevenJeuris the new green default one I've been given? Or do you still see my company's logo?

Probably I see your (blueish?) company logo.

Odd, not it fixed itself. yey

This is the style I believe I was referring to. Not actually the same, but it reminded me of it.

8:50 PM
Oh, yeah, it's similar
(That's my company's logo)

... tsss shamelessly advertising in chat. I should flag that! :)

We;re so gonna ban you, Josh

LOL
hides

So, which one of the two guys in that picture is you? :) (On your webpage)

@StevenJeuris I'm the woman on the right who's doing this: \o/
;-)

8:54 PM
And on a more CogSci related note: "A gallant objective that is accomplished by the best of brains: left brains and right brains, technical gurus and master artisans." I remember seeing a TED talk where was mentioned the brain isn't strictly wired like that at lal.

@StevenJeuris (Boring answer: Those are all stock images)

@Josh I figured. ;p It has a (sorry for the literal translation from a dutch expression) excuse-black-guy in it.
I'm missing the excuse-chinese-guy though.

token black guy, female worker uncomfortably happy with work, yep, it's a stock photo

Haha. :) So 'token black guy' is the english translation.

I think that same black guy is in like 5000 stock photos. Usually wearing that same shirt actually.
Yep

8:57 PM
... but ... but ... they look so happy! It must be real!

@BenBrocka lmao Yes
Revamping the website has been on our list for months and months :-)
@StevenJeuris This doesn't surprise me. But that's just flowery language to be used as filler, haha

lol. The image has a title of "flash_bin" for no reason >>

@BenBrocka Because 8 years ago we planned on having a flash animation in there ;-)
but it should not have a title
opens his CMS

That;s it's alt too for some reason

@Josh That's a good thing. The underlying message is "We get things done without having to worry about how nice our website looks. We are simply awesome and don't need to brainwash you to contract us."

9:01 PM
hahaha :-)

Pft, you guys will never get big without flash animations

@BenBrocka I was soooo tempted to change that title to "Ben will never read this" but since our team is supposed to be redoing that website 9for real this time) next week, I figured that would be... bad :-)

@BenBrocka Wow, .. was this on the top100 most terrible sites ever? :)
I like simplistic designs. Take a look at my placeholder for a project which I still have to start working on ... whenever: whatodo.at
Actually it even contains a typo I have known about for over a year and didn't bother to change: "promoto your event for free to the right audience"
... and I never decided on a logo.
It's a spin-off of a local party agenda I did for my town when I was in college. When heading to the Netherlands that kind of died.

@StevenJeuris I like the concept!
@StevenJeuris Deciding on our logo took... let's just say a really long time, LOL

@Josh The idea is actually very much related to my thesis. Activities are central in users their lives. Designing a user interface around a user only works up until a certain point.

9:12 PM
Interesting!

Yup, it is! The only thing which still baffles me is why there exists no mainstream interface which supports a user in such a way. In my opinion e.g. smartphones are a big step back in user interfaces.
well .. no, not a big step, just a step back. :)

@Josh UX designers will always find those

Oh ... look at this big wall of apps! apps here apps there app for that app for this. Let's list them and scroll through them!

Then we will drive to your house and beat you to death with a giant X

@Josh In this UX answer I tried to summarize what I knew about Activity Theory that far. :)

9:26 PM
@BenBrocka LOL
@StevenJeuris Cool, I'll check that out after I finish the code I'm working in

Caenorhabditis elegans () is a free-living, transparent nematode (roundworm), about 1 mm in length, which lives in temperate soil environments. Research into the molecular and developmental biology of C. elegans was begun in 1974 by Sydney Brenner and it has since been used extensively as a model organism. Biology C. elegans is unsegmented, , and bilaterally symmetrical, with a cuticle integument, four main epidermal cords and a fluid-filled pseudocoelomate cavity. Members of the species have many of the same organ systems as other animals. In the wild, they feed on bacteria tha...
Now I know why they always refer to them as C.Elegans. :)

lol
try and say Caenorhabditis three times fast

@BenBrocka ae in latin is "ay" from "say" right?
I named my UX prototype Laevo, which I found to be a suitable name for an interface which tries to make your life easier. :)

yeah
it's just so cute
@josh ha, you fixed that quick. The alt attribute is still non-accessible though
alt="generic stock photo" probably isn't that helpful either though...

@BenBrocka Just wondering, I read on eyewire that they sliced up its brain to model it in 3D and study it. Did they establish how different the brain is across different worms? ... or should I turn this into a question? (although I didn't do any research yet ... but I did already have wikipedia open :))

9:40 PM
I was never 100% sure how accurate neural mapping is

@BenBrocka ... a question it is.
@BenBrocka rofl
Your question is a good starting point: cogsci.stackexchange.com/a/247/21

@BenBrocka Oh yes. I will fix that also in a moment
@BenBrocka I have enough trouble trying to say it once :-)
@BenBrocka How about alt="Empowering Online Success" since that's what the text in the image is? :-)

9:57 PM
@Josh I thought of that. Pretty much the best option, since everything else is just fluff

@BenBrocka You dare to call these pleasant looking people fluff!

LOL

They're just so happy I feel I should probably call the police

I'm forumlating a question about Agnosias, but I'm not sure what it's going to be yet
Another question inspired by the Charlie Rose Brain Series, and another area which fascinates me

10:19 PM
I was thinking of asking about aphasia but I never did
not aphasia...what's that thing where you can only recognize things in one left/right field of vision but you're not blind either?

Hi all, picking up on earlier discussion I also received a temp moderator email

@JeromyAnglim We were told :-)

ahh, okay.

in Room for Josh Steven and Aarthi, 3 hours ago, by Aarthi
@Josh I mean, it's not a secret, but Jeromy is a rare exception. He's accepted pro-temming, and I'll explain why I offered it to him if you wish.

Have they got their act together and sent Ben an email yet

10:33 PM
in Room for Josh Steven and Aarthi, 3 hours ago, by Aarthi
to use an SO analogy: Ben is Jon Skeet. Jeromy is Bill the Lizard
@JeromyAnglim Aarthi thinks Ben would be better off as a user rather than a mod
in Room for Josh Steven and Aarthi, 3 hours ago, by Aarthi
It wasn't personal by any means. If anything, it was a vote of confidence! We like Ben and we value him -- that's why I didn't want to curtail his awesomeness with responsibilities that would take away from letting him do awesome stuff on the sites.

okay; I'll have a read;

@JeromyAnglim Cool. Aarthi was very approachable, if you have concerns please feel free to ask her. Or me. I want to see everyone happy, if possible!

Q: What is the bias by which we tend to accept vague descriptions of ourselves?

Ben BrockaThere's an effective trope employees by horoscopes and "psychics" where they say vauge statements like "You like being with friends but you like your time at home"; statements that basically "cover their bases" in multiple extremes. As a typical example in high school our Psychology teacher gave...

I asked and answered my own question because I found the answer so quickly. Do we think this is okay?
GEneral SE policy is asking + answering your own question is okay for the purposes of sharing knowledge

@BenBrocka Sure, I think so
@BenBrocka Yeah. If it's a question you genuinely have, it's okay to ask and then answer it. It gets a little borderline if you're just doing it to "seed", but you're clearly not
> Cognitive Sciences - Stack Exchange is that tiny asterisk in the middle

I've seen the FAQ :P

10:46 PM
@BenBrocka Okay :-) Just sayin', when they say "blog" and "wiki", they mean exactly what you're doing here

Bliki

(That is, instead of blogging about "the bias by which we tend to accept vague descriptions of ourselves" you can ask and answer)

I now want to found Blikipedia

@BenBrocka I think it's fine. If it's a good question, and a good answer, it gets upvotes.

I will be it's founder, Bimmy Jales

10:49 PM
I often answer my own question, the general rules that I follow: (1) is it a legitimate question at the time of asking; (2) wait perhaps a day to give others the chance of answering; but those are just two rules that I use to be cautious; I don't think they are essential.
I asked a question about what's new for apa 6th edition the other day, because I was working on my first paper that required 6th edition; so I wanted to know the important changes. In the end I spent an hour reading everything on the web I could find and recording what I found in an answer.
Also, I know who John Skeet is, and I've seen Bill the Lizard answering questions and clearly he's a high rep user, but is there somewhere that explains what it means to the "bill the lizard" of a site.

Bill is the John Skeet of meta sorta

ahh, okay.

He has 76,966 on StackOverflow, so he's clearly an expert
But he's also a moderator and spends a lot of time helping to shape the community

@Josh thanks

11:13 PM
okay, asked about answering own questions on meta meta.cogsci.stackexchange.com/questions/156
and you guessed it, answered my own question on meta meta.cogsci.stackexchange.com/a/157/52

@JeromyAnglim hahahaha that's great

that's pretty meta

Q: What is the etiquette for asking and answering your own question?

Jeromy Anglim Is it okay to answer your own question? Are there any rules that should govern asking and answering your own questions?

Yes @StackExchange we saw that already

11:55 PM
I just thought I'd share this list of site stats: stackexchange.com/sites?sort=traffic
By my rough count, our site traffic is greater than 11 other sites that started before us.

@JeromyAnglim this is awesome!
