Q: How will branding affect the perceived inclusiveness of cognitive science and psychology?

Jeromy AnglimBackground: This site arose out the merging of three area-51 proposals: Cognitive science Psychology Psychology and psychiatry From the initial beta period, the site clearly has many questions that could be classified as psychology and cognitive science just psychology just cognitive scie...

Q: Data sets for articles on Cognitive Sciences

UbermenschMost of the question and answers in this site refer to an article of research to support hypothesis with facts. Since all these hypothesis must have been based on some data, can such raw data can be accessed. Shortly, can data sets to articles on cognitive sciences is freely available?

Q: Where else are people asking scientific questions about psychology and cognitive science?

Jeromy AnglimAt present, I think the stack exchange model provides the best infrastructure for building a high-quality question and answer site. In general, I think that if people on the Internet who are looking for a place to ask quality scientific questions on psychology and cognitive science, become aware ...

Q: What should an "accepted answer" mean on this site?

Ben BrockaAn "Accepted Answer" means something different on each Stack Exchange site. On some sites it's a functional question; this solution worked, full stop. We have a more subjective case. When should a user accept an answer? When their curiosity is satisfied? When the community seems to have come to ...

Q: What is the proper way to deal with questions that are off-topic?

JoshSometimes questions get posted to the site which are off-topic or outside the scope of this site. What is the best way to deal with such questions?

1:13 AM
morning all; so much chat while I sleep...
@Josh regarding "not my area of expertise comments", because I'm an academic in psychology, if I give an answer that is outside my area of expertise, I don't want any flaws in the answer reflecting on my academic reputation. I'm also particularly wary of this when it comes to anything to do with clinical psychology matters.
@Josh as for my area of expertise, thanks for asking. Main areas of interest include quantitative psychology, psychometrics, skill acquisition, individual differences in ability and personality; I've also lectured courses in organisational psychology;
I've also worked a bit in roles related to psych testing in selection and recruitment; I'm currently doing some research on faking personality tests in selection and recruitment; My post doc is in bayesian modelling of the relationship between personality and learning curves.... I've also dabbled a bit in social network analysis; Anway, it's a bit eclectic; so something like that, anyway:-)
@BenBrocka Here's a list of general sharing of the site link; I agree that sharing specific questions is the way to go at this point.
@BenBrocka that taking a break question is a great example of a reddit share. awesome.
@Josh yep, quoting the OP's PhD Advisor made me laugh too; the small world of academia
@Josh regarding area 51 metrics; I think it's early days, some of those metrics take time to grow (site traffic ultimately comes from google and is tied to amount and quality of content; but I guess we've given it a boost with Reddit); answer percentage can be lower because the proportion of new questions is high in the early period; still I'd like to see the number of questions per day stay above 5 and the answer rate to stay above 50%.
@BenBrocka regarding number of hits generated by reddit, I think you can get a pretty good sense from the view count for the question. I.e., without reddit, it seems to be about 50 to 200 views per question; so perhaps just subtract that; also if you share the link underneath the question, you'll get badges that indicate a few milestones: blog.stackoverflow.com/2010/09/…
@BenBrocka regarding the conversion levels from the reddit traffic, I guess it's always going to be about probabilities. If we get 1000 visitors from reddit, perhaps even if only 1% sign up, it's probably still increasing the rate of sign ups to the site. But I also imagine that some subreddits will have a higher concentration of people with an appropriate background in cognitive sciences to enable contributing to the site.

@JeromyAnglim I know it's a great tool, I just find it interesting
I'm just sad that I posted with the wrong link to reddit, or I'd get the publicist badge soon for the first time ever...

correction (answer rate stay above 80%)
@BenBrocka I didn't even realise the badges existed until the site started thanking me for sharing a link; and I was saying to myself: "how does it know that "I" shared the link".

5:10 AM
you have to use the "link" button on a Q/A
I just used the URL from my address bar which doesn't work

@BenBrocka I just used the link button by chance; and it wasn't until the badge popped up that I realised that I must have done it that way.

@JeromyAnglim How much research do you do prior to answering and how much do you instantly know where to look for? :) Out of curiosity. That's a nice background you have there!

2:06 PM
@JeromyAnglim yeah, sadly it seems the times when we're all awake at the same time are few and far between! I was away all night when you got up for the morning :-)
@JeromyAnglim yeah as @Ben said when you use the "link" link, you get a link with your ID in it. For example: http://cogsci.stackexchange.com/q/1/13 is me (User #13) linking to question #1
@JeromyAnglim this makes complete sense. It also raises a good question about how we should handle actual clinical questions... hmmm, I may ask that on meta later.

The Biology/Cogsci issue was raised again. Should it be closed as dupe?

2:24 PM
@JeromyAnglim glad to know what your area of expertise is! I was asking because when I kept seeing you say "not my area of expertise" I thought man, can we throw this guy some questions that are in his area of expertise? :-)
@JeromyAnglim * skill acquisition, individual differences in ability and personality* I can most likely come up with some questions in those areas!
@JeromyAnglim yes, I agree completly

@StevenJeuris hadn't heard of that concept...seems more Programmers if I'm understanding the wikipedia article right

@BenBrocka Yes it is, but the purpose is to resemble realistic cognition. :) But I'd consider it off-topic yes. :) Unless you ask how it relates to actual cognition or something.

this question needs editing:

Q: What is the optimal length of an initial task training session?

CasebashWhen a practise session is too long, there will presumably be a point where no further significant gains can be made. So suppose I am learning a task (such as a dance move) for the first time. It might be a good idea to stop the session if I become fatigued, but let's pretend that this doesn't oc...

"practise" should be "practice", but I can't make such a trivial edit
And this part needs to be rewritten:
> Does research give us insight as to whether there is a certain percentage, such as 80% or 90% where a break is necessary?
He doesn't mean percentage, because percentage of what... but I am afraid I will change his meaning if I edit
An edit for @Ben or @Jeromy to approve please!

8:35 PM
I wish they'd pick some darn mods already

lol, patience @Ben, patience! ;-)
Not that I can say I don't feel the same way XD

This Q could probably be better asnwered here, no?

Q: Empirical measures of performance

Please expand your answers with real-world experience, and/or references to articles that describe the process of measuring the particulars of the per...

in addition to, not replacing, the other question

@BenBrocka possibly. Crossposing is frowned upon on SE sites, so it should probably be migrated instead of duplicated. And if that's the case it probably has a better chance on UX which is out of beta and has a larger userbase
it's only 9 hours old. If it were 9 days old I'd say crosspost

Cross posting is done when a question is relevant on and may receive effective but different answers on more than one site, I think that applies perfectly here, I'll see what the asker wants to do though

@BenBrocka To me it's a similar situation with community wiki polls. Personally I'm all for it, I think it can be good in certain circumstances 9like this one). I'm just relaying the official position from the team, namely, Y U CROSS POST WE NO APPROVE OF THIS! ;-)

8:43 PM
I doubt there'd be much complaint as long as both are clearly directed toward their respective audience
there have been surviving examples like posts on DBA and Programmers, I think our overlap with UX has more room for "cross posting" than most sites

Point taken and I agree
Also note that I am very well aware of the fact that publicly poking fun at the team like that may dramatically reduce my chances at being picked as a mod. What can I say? Poking fun at the team is a long-standing hobby of mine ;-)

AHHHHHHHHHHH why can't people separate their text into logically distinct paragraphs

Yeah that drives me nuts too

A: How will branding affect the perceived inclusiveness of cognitive science and psychology?

Werner SchmittIn my experiene, reading metas of physics.SE and theophy.SE from time to time facing similar problems, dont worry about branding, experts and esp. researchers will only come, read and post on this place if you yield a high quality of Q&A. And the less number of experts a proposal starts with,...

So many posts can be improved just by adding line breaks before every sentance that sounds like a new idea
took 30 seconds to make that almost readable and I haven't even read it
(check the original revision)

yeah, much better @Ben

There's a bunch of other things in need of editbut I need to get some work done...

@StevenJeuris Regarding knowing versus knowing where to look: It varies. I've read and partially forgotten a lot over the years. In general, I'll often do a Google search and a Google Scholar search; maybe browse a pdf or two. Some questions are well in my comfort zone (e.g., tests on skill acquisition, intelligence, etc.). Others like the leg jiggling question was basically pure research out of curiosity.
I'm thinking of posting a meta question along the lines of: "What is an efficient research strategy for providing a scientific answer on the site?" I.e., to encourage people to answer their own questions after posting, and encourage the presentation of more scientific evidence.
@Josh re questions on skill acquisition, etc.: great, bring them on. I guess I see answering qusetions on this site as kind of like exercise. I learn something in the process.
@BenBrocka I'm a big fan of tidying up questions.
