Someone up for some benchmark-porn???

2:54 AM
@halirutan what kind of computer is this?
It is interesting in the standard benchmarks that the 6-core E5 and 8-core i7 give the same result. There are a variety of differences between them but evidently they exactly cancel out.
The processors that could outperform either of these two all seem to be tremendously expensive

@OleksandrR. I just finished building my new machine

@Kuba I believe I found the related post: mathematica.stackexchange.com/q/68823/1871

@halirutan Which processor is that? Did you overclock it (to what frequency)?

@xzczd Done!
@TimStone I love the chat modification script of you guys, but one thing that is annoying is that you haven't put it in the Chrome Web Store. If it is an official script there, then it can be installed easily and more importantly, it get's installed on every machine where you log in with your google account. Is there any particular reason no one has done this? The Mathematica Editor Buttons
are available through the store and it wasn't hard to create this package and upload it.

@halirutan Thx!

@halirutan We currently recommend using Tampermonkey to make it a bit easier to install, but you're absolutely right. There are some updates I've been meaning to look into anyway, so when I do that I'll look into packaging it for the Store as well. I'll let you know when it's available—glad you like it!

If anyone uses MaTeX here, one more vote here would be appreciated: meta.tex.stackexchange.com/a/6402/6302 (and maybe also on our own site)
@halirutan I get 2.12 on a 2014 rMBP (2.5 GHz i7). I would have expected a bigger difference with a desktop, especially considering that Mma tends to be slower on Mac than Linux ...
On a second try, 2.15 ... I suspect the benchmarking package is not that useful anymore.
I'm sure your computer is much faster than this laptop.

7:58 PM
@halirutan It's slower than your old one?

A: Buying a new computer (specifically for Mathematica)

halirutanLet me give you a start by sharing some insights. This all is purely subjective. When I buy a new computer, then I take some time to study the state of the art regarding hardware. You will never know everything because there are just too much topics, too much details and just too much to read, bu...

It is a early 2012 machine with Core i7-3960X. Not the best anymore :( but I still am in love with it...

@Karsten7. It is not overclocked yet, but yes, you are right. I really wanted to have 8 cores for better parallilzation and my last cpu was not that bad :)
