Where is the question that refers to overriding system constructs?
Shadowing system variables

1:01 AM
@Liam So which is it – are you overriding them or shadowing them?

1:43 AM
@rm-rf Ideally override the System variables, while still holding calling the internal representation. I just remember a question that discussed how to almost wrap system functions.

@Liam Is Internal`InheritedBlock what you're looking for?

Not exactly I am looking to actually replace the system value. Something like this
Unprotect[Print]
Module[{OldPrint = Print},
 Print = Function[{x},
   OldPrint[x];
   OldPrint[x];
   ]
 ]
but without the infinite recursion issue
don't run the code warning
@rm-rf I hope you might understand my convulted attempt at writing code that illustrates what I am looking for.

2:03 AM
@Liam Sorry, I never understand what you're looking for, because you never ask what you're looking for and never say what the purpose of the convoluted code is. It's hard to always be searching in the dark...
@Liam In this case, it looks like the Villegas–Gayley trick is what you need.
Unprotect@Print;
Print[x_] /; ! TrueQ[$True] := Block[{$True = True}, Print[x]; Print[x]];

2:20 AM
@rm-rf That is exactly what I am looking for. If it helps I ultimately trying to prevent Graphics from being rendered in HoldComplete in the question you just commented on a second ago. If it is any help I can post a picture that helps explain more/why I am trying to do it, but that is only if the question is not clear.

@Liam This isn't sufficient: Hold@InputForm@Graphics[{Red, Circle[]}]?

@rm-rf updated post with picture and explanation. Yes that and InputForm@Hold[Graphics[{Red, Circle[], x}]] work. I am trying to force Mathematica to render Held Graphics that way because there is no value IMO to the user to partially(half way) render something.

hello

hi
Why can't I find any female-expert on this site? No woman likes Mathematica? :)

1 hour later…

@Liam Internal`InheritedBlock is the thing. There are multiple answers using it, and withReplacedFunctions worked for me in this post:

A: How to make Mathematica try harder to perform symbolic comparisons?

kirmaThis solution uses trick to redefine internal functions presented in this earlier answer by Leonid Shifrin. (* Code run as an argument of WithFullySimplifiedComparisons tries harder to symbolically resolve equality and inequality tests. *) ClearAll[WithFullySimplifiedComparisons]; WithFullyS...

I like my form because it abstracts the not-so-obvious construct to kind of With.

7:28 AM
@kirma no hangover, I see!
@pheiztu That's an odd question - what kind of expertise are you looking for?!

7:56 AM
@cormullion :)

8:22 AM
@SjoerdC.deVries Hi, could you share a source of better resolution of your avatar? I failed looking for better one via g**gle graphics. This is my favourite of all of avatars :p

8:49 AM
Hmmh. How does Mathematica handle gamma correction on images? If I create a Raster image and export it, does it perform gamma correction on it, that is, is the original Raster linear intensity?
I have a hunch: it doesn't do what I want.
Doesn't seem linear to me: Image[Table[If[Mod[Floor[y/20], 2] == 0, Boole[RandomReal[] < x/1000], x/1000], {y, 100}, {x, 1000}]]
This explains it:
I'm trying to do precise rasterization and antialiasing of black objects on white background, and this seems to always be an issue, with almost every tool. I'm a bit surprised Mma doesn't have built-in support for linearized color spaces.

9:35 AM
@cormullion well,maybe reputation higher than 5000? I think this question is odd too :p
I'm just curious.

@pheiztu The answer is 'no', I think (to "No woman likes Mathematica?", which isn't a clear question). But it's an odd question nevertheless...

ok, anyway, thanx...

ya...sure.

@cormullion @pheiztu Your argument is invalid, Verbeia is a woman, isn't she?

9:49 AM
and Silvia, a female name.
but as far as i know, he/she is a male physically。

who?

oh, that's privacy things, i shouldn't talk about that...

ok, her.

hmm in Polish there is no male name which ends with "a", my name is Jacob but short form is Kuba so I've faced situations that foreginers thought it is female name :)

10:05 AM
:D we do have such situations in China. For instance, my name....

@pheiztu what's wrong with your name? :0
:)

I thought large portion of Chinese names are gender-neutral

my name is "binbin", that's usually a girl's name in China...
a household registration mistake happened after my birth...
the name my parents gave me is "bin", but now it becomes "binbin"....
that's too bad :(

10:21 AM
Well, "usually" sounds like there's still variation. I think that among Finnish names, there are probably less than 1% (and even much less people with such names) that could even be accepted for both genders.
@pheiztu Huh!

not toooo bad actually...

@pheiztu I can confirm I am female. Mathematica user since 1995 and moderator of the site. So there. There is also Heike but she hasn’t been around for a while.

I think names of most Finns end in a vocal, which might many Europeans might assume to increase odds of those names being female names. Usually they're so different from names used in indoeuropean languages that it's probably just alphabet soup to them.
(My username is my surname, though.)

oh man..

wow

10:29 AM
What a nice Friday the 13nd..

Eh, "vocal". I meant vowel. :)
@halirutan you should have come here! :)

@kirma yep.. probably

10:49 AM
@halirutan Take a look at rm-fr's profile rep :/ That user is probably Ruebenko

@Kuba hmm...

...? :)

11:24 AM
@Kuba Is ruebenko really deleted?

That's what I've heard yesterday here. I think, he rather deleted an account than was deleted.

@Kuba In chat?

I think if you scan the chat you can find Leonid and rm talking about this

@Kuba The thing is, I know him in person and HE was then one who suggested me the SO/SE sites! I never looked at them.

@halirutan don't ask me I'm quite new in community.

11:29 AM
but why? I don't know what happened...

1 hour later…
12:34 PM
@halirutan it is puzzling.

@YvesKlett Rolf doesn't know anything either.
I'm a bit worried because although the reason maybe completely simple, you could just stay offline, if you don't have time or it's no fun anymore.

@halirutan true...
on another note, you do not by chance want to go to Champaign in October?

12:58 PM
@YvesKlett Nope ;-)

1:17 PM
Block does that?

A: What is in your Mathematica tool bag?

Alexey PopkovInternal`InheritedBlock I have learned recently the existence of such useful function as Internal`InheritedBlock, from this message of Daniel Lichtblau in the official newsgroup. As I understand, Internal`InheritedBlock allows to pass a copy of an outbound function inside the Block scope: In[...

ignore what i have typed...

2:18 PM
@kuba :) i was trying to answer the question "(Is it true that) No woman likes Mathematica?"! I'm sure the answer to that is no... :)

5 hours later…
7:48 PM
@Kuba I have all Calvin & Hobbes albums but I believe I used a gif I found somewhere on the net for this avatar. Forgot where.

2 hours later…
9:45 PM
@SjoerdC.deVries Thank's. I was looking for good resolution so I can print it on t-shirt an go on exams :)

@kuba Calvin fan too?

10:05 PM
@SjoerdC.deVries I can't say so, I saw only couple of stripes and I like them all. But the frame from your avatar is so well suited with my thoughts about exams system that I can't resist to print it :p

10:26 PM
`BarChart[RandomReal[1, {10, 5}], ChartLayout -> "Percentile",
Axes -> None, BarSpacing -> {0, 0}, ChartStyle -> "DarkBands",
ImageSize -> {850, 315}, AspectRatio -> 315/850,
PlotRangePadding -> 0, ImagePadding -> 0, ImageMargins -> 0]`
If one selects that there's a white stripe to the left. I can't for the life of me figure out how to get rid of it.

@Calle Hello :)
`, ImageSize -> {850, Automatic}, Method -> {"ShrinkWrap" -> True}`

@Kuba Hey, thanks! You found it around here somewhere because I don't think that's in the documentation?

@Calle single "ShrinkWrap" is not enough. Automatic second dimension seems to be necessary, or first doesn't matter since there is AspectRatio.
and about the method, yes, here ;)

Q: How can one find undocumented options or option values in Mathematica?

VerbeiaMathematica has a lot of undocumented or poorly documented options. How does one go about working out if there is an undocumented option that might solve a particular problem? How does one work out what the universe of possible values the option might take are? (This also applies to options who...

@Kuba Nice.

Those tiny features are driving me crazy sometimes ;)

10:38 PM
:D

11:22 PM
@LeonidShifrin Hi, are you around?
