test
animated gifs work. Behold!

@BrettChampion Nahh .. that is just a side effect of @R.M's powers

At least you're using this power for good, not evil...

@BrettChampion Just wait until @R.M gets elected as mod. Then you'll know what real evil is about
He poses as a human being
But ...

@belisarius It'll be interesting to see who we end up with for mods. I guess we'll know soon enough.
At least I haven't been getting robo-called by the candidates.

@BrettChampion hehe yep. That's the good side of this. If being mod were a payed job, I'm pretty sure the whole thing could turnvery different
@BrettChampion Where I live, the major (robo)calls home at least once a week
@BrettChampion Of course he owns the call centre, so go figure ...

2:54 AM
Yeah, I figure by mid-October the robo-calls will be in full swing where I live. Mostly for local races though; everyone knows how Illinois is going to vote for president.
@belisarius Ah, it's just a weekly test of the system then!

@BrettChampion Yep. He figured out how to get self payed for testing

@belisarius I wonder what polls that site uses. The one I use shows a much different picture.

@rcollyer Hehe. Mine was an intentional trick. It is a "user generated Internet poll map". republicans are doing their best to show they are near.

@belisarius ah, internet polling such a reliable source of data!

@rcollyer As reliable as this site :P

3:03 AM
But, we're not a poll. pole-axe maybe, but not a pole. We're not singular!
Although, we do have decay rates ...

@rcollyer You never know. The last molecule to know it is at a vortex is the central one

that's a good point.

@rcollyer Speaking of which, I wonder what Szabolcs is up to and whether he's made it into the US yet.

@rcollyer Why haven't you run for office?

@BrettChampion Haven't heard from him recently. I hope he and his wife made it here okay.
@belisarius time.
I should be working. I'm not, but I should be.

3:07 AM
@BrettChampion He got married. Details are superfluous, poor pal.

@belisarius Just because it didn't work out any of the 4 times you tried it, doesn't mean his won't! :)

@rcollyer Well, everyone has the right to cross the river. I guess there are navigable rivers somewhere.

@belisarius And what, his new bride hid the computer? (Smart woman if she did.)

@belisarius true.

@BrettChampion I am sure it's under the laundry or behind the "learn to be a good papa" bookshelf
But that is cynic. The beauty of cynicism is that it's better than reality.

3:13 AM
Sometimes. But, they have drugs for that now which may be better, if you can get along with the side-effects.

@rcollyer drugs for what?

Cynicism. :)

@rcollyer Nahh ... only a brain extirpation. If they can find it

I had an MRI, once, they didn't find anything.

gotta go! see you later

3:15 AM
Night!

Time for me to go as well. See ya later!

Night!

8 hours later…

3 hours later…
2:14 PM
@all, regarding my question
2
Q: Why does repeating an equation help in FindRoot?

Eli LanseyI'm trying to understand this behavior of FindRoot. Consider a sample function (the one I'm actually interested in is far more complicated, but has similar issues) and the following arguments: crazyFunction[x_, y_] := N@Norm[{x + 2 y}] yact = RandomReal[{-10, 10}, 2]~Join~{RandomReal[{100, 250}]...

i'm not sure if i should ask a separate question of "what's really the best way to do this" or not
what are your thoughts?

2:37 PM
@EliLansey Maybe stay with this question for the time being...

@J.M. ok. that's what i figured. can't seem to get some other suggestions from other answers to work well
including NonLinearModelFit or FindMinimum, etc

@EliLansey Question's quite interesting; I'm thinking about why it's like this...

@J.M. thanks. spent the better portion of a week trying to figure out what was going on before i determined this is the cause and came up with the mwe
