12:01 AM
@robjohn hehe.. it's a nice avatar

It'd be cooler if it was somehow happy one direction and sad the other. :-)
@R.M Hope you enjoy your new machine; I'm holding off for now. (The notebook magnification popup should be beautiful, though.)

@R.M Thanks :-) What kind of machine did you get?

R.M
12:17 AM
@BrettChampion A 13" is slated to release sometime Oct...
@robjohn an rMBP

@R.M I've heard that, but I like 15".
The retinas look better than I was expecting when at the non-integer scaled resolutions.

R.M
It's incredibly light too... Well, at least I can feel it dramatically because my previous one was a 2008 model which weighed about 6-7 lbs
The high density display is very addictive... I'm struggling with adjusting to the display in mma now. And to think I didn't have any of these "issues" just yesterday :)

@R.M I assume that is a MacBook Pro with retina display. I still have a 17" MacBook Pro. Nice display, but I know how high the resolution is on the retina display on my iPhone. That should be amazing.

R.M
@robjohn yes, that's right.

@R.M does it only come with the glossy screen?

R.M
12:24 AM
Yeah, I don't think they have the matte screens anymore. I think they retired those as of the previous generation

I got mine with the matte screen to prevent glare.
@R.M I think you're right.

No matte option, although the screen is supposed to have some less glare because there's one less layer of glass (or something.)

R.M
Right, I read that they removed the glass casing or something like that
I'm happy that I have something that boots fast... I made a mistake upgrading the previous one to Lion. It was not built for it — it barely met the minimum spec requirements (which I did not check before upgrading)
It sometimes took 45 mins to boot (or even wake up), which is why I almost never restarted it or let it sleep
I'd drive/bike home with the laptop on and running... Nightmares.

45 minutes to boot?! Wow.

R.M
If I ever needed to restart it, I'd do it just before going to bed... then I'd wake up and login while fixing breakfast and tea (logging in took 10+ mins)
Yeah, it wasn't pleasant. It was a great laptop on Snow Leopard, but Lion killed it
The funny thing was that all these issues were only related to startup and waking up from sleep. Everything else was smooth

12:37 AM
I'm still on Snow Leopard, on a Late 2008 MBP.

R.M
I liked Snow Leopard. I still miss Spaces laid out as a grid... I used to use a 9x9 grid and no space was more than 2-3 key presses/swipes away. Lion lays it out in a row

12:56 AM
this is a dup

Q: How do I save multiple variables with an iterated name in Mathematica?

tquartonI want to create multiple variables with iterated names in Mathematica, something like this: Do["f" <> ToString[i] = i*2, {i, 1, 20}] where I get f1=2, f2=4, f3=6, ... and so on. I the error: Set::write: Tag StringJoin in f<>1 is Protected. >> Any help would be great. Thanks!

@BrettChampion is that 10.5.8?
The computer says numbers and magazines always say names. It is often hard to tell if what you have is what they are talking about.
@BrettChampion I see it is 10.6. I have that, but I have not upgraded.

CHM
1:36 AM
@R.M That's the reason I won't upgrade from 10.6.8 on my '09 MBP.
"Upgrade" might not be the good word in such a case.

2:15 AM
@belisarius what have you tried? :P
@belisarius Nah, I guess I had been quite inactive and didn't stop to think if it was that kind of question

@Rojo I posted an answer in the original (not in the dup)

@belisarius In the beat of a tune question? I don' t see your answer

@Rojo Your link is misleading ...
@Rojo anyway, your code in the answer does not work :P :P

@belisarius I think I'm too tired to understand anything. You mean the closed answer?

@Rojo yep

2:29 AM
Doesn't matter that it doesn't work then I guess
I hadn't noticed

a minor bug
look
data = ..... + RandomReal[0.3 {-1, 1}, Length@data];
ha!

Ouch
No
What
That doesn't work?

you forgt to test your code with a ClearAll

HAHA

you had data defined before doing that

2:32 AM
Lame
I added the noise later
Edited

So, +1/2

Thank
(only 1 thank)

ha
Nice joke , added another 1/2

Thanks ;)

but I guess it is not a dup

2:38 AM
I don't think it is

this one is not asking for Fourier

it is asking something simpler, and not requesting a particular method

@Rojo So it is not a dup
I solved that kind of problems without uing fourier before
usually because the sampling period was not enough

@belisarius At least I got to 12k before it got closed :)

clap!

2:42 AM
Boring questions lately

Did you see my "flags" code?

except for your celebration, but it exceeded my mental capacity to available time ratio

@Rojo Don't bother it will remain open for a long time
need to go
here is my code
flags = CountryData["Europe", "Flag"];
cd = CommonestFilter[#, 2] & /@ flags;
id0 = Flatten[ImageData@#, 1] & /@ cd;
id1 = Tally /@ id0;
id2 = Function[x, Select[x, #[[2]] >= Total[x[[All, 2]]]/200 &]] /@
id1;
id3 = Map[First, id2, {2}];
id4 = Transpose@{id3, flags};
id5 = Grid[
SortBy[GatherBy[id4, Union[#[[1]]] &][[All, All, 2]], -Length@# &],
Frame -> All]

@belisarius Buhbye

@belisarius do you think this and this should be closed (TL)/deleted? It looks like you've answered his question but he seems to be giving bizarre and unlikely inputs and essentially asking "why doesn't this work?". For me these are both too close to "give me teh codez" questions (or RTFM, at best).

2:54 AM
@OleksandrR. let me see
This one mathematica.stackexchange.com/questions/9034/… we could keep. This other one is garbage

@belisarius what perturbed me about that is that FindDifferenceRoot is not a Mathematica function (that I've ever heard of). What is he really using to get the DifferenceRoot?

No idea. As I am not in the latest version I always suppose that my functions list could be incomplete

Oh, never mind. It comes out of Sum automatically. (I didn't run the code to check previously.)

anyway, no need of any function for plotting that

So, he is asking about a nonexistent function, and that's why I think the question is ill-formed.
Admittedly, plotting it is a valid outcome, but can this question help anyone else in future? I would say no.

3:00 AM
@OleksandrR. Vote to close (and delete) if you feel like that. No hard feelings :D
I think we will see a lot of these now that we graduated

Okay. I thought you might have had some stronger feelings about it one way or the other since you answered these questions. Usually I ignore questions like this even if I know the answer.

@OleksandrR. No problem. I think my answers could help the OP. But I doubt if anyone else is benefited

@belisarius Leonid was right (as usual). The question quality has really gone downhill fast since graduation.

@OleksandrR. That is the meaning of life. You get public, you have to attend the world. We can pick the questions we like, and leave the rest
Now, look what question had Daniel Lichtblau answered

Q: Solve non-linear system of equation in Mathematica

mrgloomI'm trying to solve non-linear system of equations in Mathemtica. I tried Solve and NSolve, I also tried to define a_{ij} and b_{ij} and m33=1 numerical to simplify equation, but Mathematica seems to work too long or I doing something wrong.In Mathematica I just trying to find solution, but I als...

he deserves a prize

Definitely! Although I feel that answering a question on SO (presumably only because it is a low quality question that we don't want migrated here?) is prizeworthy in itself.

3:12 AM
@OleksandrR. Well, I continue answering there :D

3:30 AM
Okay, bed time for me. Night!

3:57 AM
@OleksandrR. Good night!

Sometimes I wonder why people type pages of code in mathematica to find fourier coefficients if they don't understand what a Fourier series is

9:14 AM
anybody knows how to use DynamicLocation? Its behavior confuses me totally..
With[{coord = {{2, 0}, {-1, 2}, {0, -2}},
  gridset =
   Join[{#, GrayLevel[.6]} & /@ Range[-3, 3], {#, GrayLevel[.9]} & /@
     Complement[Range[-3, 3, 1/10], Range[-3, 3]]]},
 GraphicsBox[{
    TagBox[
     StyleBox[PolygonBox[coord],
      Directive[FaceForm[],
       EdgeForm[{Thickness[0], Hue[1, 1, 0.7], Opacity[1]}]]],
     "DynamicName", BoxID -> "VertexID$1"],
    StyleBox[PointBox[DynamicLocation["VertexID$1", Automatic, #]],
       Blue, PointSize[.01]] & /@ {Left, Right, Top, Bottom},
Try edit the shape of the triangle by mouse. Points whose positions controlled by DynamicLocation response in a not so obvious way. I can't figure it out.
And didn't find out what the second argument in DynamicLocation["someDynamicID", arg2, arg3] can be besides Automatic.

1 hour later…
10:38 AM
@Silvia I didn't even know there was a DynamicLocation. Ping me up if you learn what it is. I'll join in with you trying to guess what it is when I have time

@Rojo I learnt it when invesgating this.

@acl You and me both.

11:34 AM
subbu is back from suspension, but he doesn't seem to have improved in the meantime...

11:45 AM
Apparently so.

12:10 PM
@j.M did you vote to close?
I assume he has seen my comment, because he's seen by the SE after I posted it, but he doesn't seem to act on it or respond in any way. It's the same pattern as before.

@SjoerdC.deVries No; if I did, it's unilateral.

1 hour later…
1:33 PM
Subbu responds, partly

acl
1:50 PM
@SjoerdC.deVries thanks for the spelling and other corrections :)
does anybody know what an EDO is? or is is a misspelling of ODE?

@acl I assumed the latter but did not dare to change it.

@acl Maybe ask?

R.M
@acl a case of the reflectism

acl
2:11 PM
I just asked about EDO vs ODE
just to keep up my complaining, this place looks more and more like the mathgroup day by day
well, that's fine, I'll get more work done :)

R.M
people should vote to close questions that are NaRQ/low quality and tell the OP to improve instead of answering them (or if they answer, improve the question). I get a feeling the number of users voting to close has gone down (can't blame them — people get busy. Newer users should pick up the slack)
That's one huge advantage over MG, but if it isn't used...

acl
yes... I have an idea for the summing pairwise potentials question, but it'll take me longer to produce the numbers to test than to write the code for the idea.

R.M
yeah, that's what I told him too...
A new OP mentioned somewhere that he read the "How to Ask" page that shows up for their first question and it said "show your research" (it's also in the FAQ) and felt he had to dump a preprint of his next paper

2:53 PM
@acl I think it's just the French abbreviation of equations differentielles ordinaire

acl
@SjoerdC.deVries aha!

@R.M If you are referring to Subbu: the guy has brushed up the question. It still ain't good, but do you think it needs to be closed?
@acl Happens with lots of abbreviations NATO=OTAN etc.

acl
all: this refers to FindDifferenceRoot. what is FindDifferenceRoot?
@SjoerdC.deVries yes that seems likely in this case

R.M
@acl Oleksandr mentioned it yesterday... I didn't run the code myself, but he said it pops out as the output of Sum
no, wait. I think I have it wrong

acl
@R.M DifferenceRoot does, but not FindDifferenceRoot

R.M
3:02 PM
Ah, yes. That's it. I confused myself with what he said
12 hours ago, by Oleksandr R.
Oh, never mind. It comes out of Sum automatically. (I didn't run the code to check previously.)
voted to close as TL

acl
@R.M sure, but how did he end up with FindDifferenceRoot?

R.M
@SjoerdC.deVries I wasn't referring to his question specifically... It was just a general remark that one really good feature that we have (and MG doesn't) is community moderation. If the community desires and is active enough, a good deal can be done without the need for moderator intervention. If people slack on that, quality will slowly go down (but we can't force anyone to do it either)
@acl Mathematica is magic, you didn't know that? I heard CERN found the Higgs boson with FindHiggsBoson["Now"]
They waited all these years and spent all that money because it was undocumented

acl
@R.M in my case it works smaller miracles, but miracles nevertheless
eg, I read this and instantly found myself imbued with the knowledge of what "residue" is
I've had a number of such experiences recently

4 hours later…
acl
7:26 PM
@R.M ha, he has made some edits but completely ignored what you or I said. I'll be damned if I ever help him

R.M
7:40 PM
@acl I saw that and facepalmed. I'm voting to close as too localized. Not because there isn't a valid list-manipulation question underneath, but the OP refuses to move away from the domain specific problem that he has presented despite being guided in that direction.

acl
yes I suppose that is a reasonable course of action.

R.M
I just finished making a poster in latex... far simpler than I thought it would be and well worth the effort for the quality of the output

acl
@R.M I use latex for the equations and pages for the layout

R.M
That would work too. Most people make a ppt and scale it up

acl
either I have never made a latex poster or I can't find it on my computer
I use latexit to type out the equation and then drag it to the poster in pages
it works pretty well and is very smooth.

R.M
7:48 PM
Latexit is very useful. I've used it before when I made presentations with powerpoint/keynote (now I use beamer) and sometimes also to use math on SE sites without mathjax support

acl
yes for talks I use beamer too
sometimes keynote if the talk is to experimental audiences when I don't want to get too technical. keynote is pretty nice

R.M
I like keynote... the thing I miss with beamer is the presentation tool. I know there are some open source equivalents, but still don't measure up to keynote/ppt (at least, as of the last time I checked)

acl
@R.M I like the transitions :) (although I don't have much reason to use them). I don't really use any of the fancy features (notes etc). usually just wing it
the main annoyance with latexit and pasting equations is that it can be fiddly to arrange everything just so. had it not been for that, I'd just use keynote/pages for everything

R.M
Heh, me too... I rarely, if ever, practice and mostly wing it. However, I do like being able to keep track of the time and know the slides ahead (although, the need for that is going down the more familiar I get with my talks)

acl
@R.M I find that I get so excited when I give talks that I somehow manage to think fast enough to avoid screwups. which is good because I rarely practice and each of my talks is on completely different things, so I don't really give any talk twice
my premise is: I've been thinking about this for x months. the chances these guys will spot something I missed are nil. thus, there's nothing to worry about
(of course I still get stressed before the talk since I know perfectly well where each of the numerous huge holes in my understanding is)

R.M
8:07 PM
gloss over the holes :) "This is too complex to describe in a talk..."
"This will take a while, so let me finish this. We can meet after the talk to discuss..." (and don't forget to bolt after the talk!)
What do you use to add javascript extensions to firefox? Greasekit?

acl
@R.M I used greasekit for ff, although now I use safari almost exclusively and I don't use anything
what do you need it for?

R.M
Some of the SE enhancement scripts

Q: Can Mathematica.SE help improve Mathematica's Meager Market in Analytics?

alancalvittiThe attached graphic from the current Rexer Analytics 2012 Data Miner Survey finds Mathematica's market in analytics ranked 13th - that's pathetic - below R, SAS, SPSS, Matlab and others, with only a sliver of practitioners using Mathematica as the primary tool. How can Mathematica.SE be used t...

acl
@StackExchange I find the last assumption problematic, but OK

acl
8:59 PM
@R.M ah that's nice. and I like how people seem to upvote it too. well, OK, in a democracy the people get exactly what they deserve
I think I'll post a question on how to to expand things in terms of the irreducible characters of O(2) and waste people's time before revealing that this means "I want to expand in a fourier series"
