@MrWizard no.

@OleksandrR nice :-p -- I think this should be closed; do you disagree?

Q: Using FindInstance to Prove No Solutions Exist

Samuel ReidFor a small amount of background, I am currently working on an undergraduate research project in Combinatorial Geometry and I'm working on a case analysis for embedding spherical simplicial 2-complexes in $\mathbb{S}^2$ and looking at their properties as they relate to tuples of spheres in arbitr...

@MrWizard I'm not sure. If it stimulates answers discussing if, and if so under what conditions, one can legitimately consider results obtained using Mathematica "proofs", it could be interesting. On the other hand as stated currently it is not hugely constructive.

@OleksandrR Okay, I'll wait and see.

@MrWizard I certainly don't think it's that bad of a question that it needs to be closed straight away. Personally, I would take a quite laissez-faire attitude to moderation of questions: if they get closed by the community, fine; if they get answers, even better. The question is not too constructive but it is not destructive either.

It wasn't my intention to close the quesiton to "punish" the asker; rather it is a matter of which site it belongs on, and in that case I think a close and/or migration is better done soon. Also, you'll notice that I am polling the chat room for opinions before any action.
Anyway, I'm off for the day. See you later.

12:11 AM
@MrWizard well, Math.SE is not always super receptive to Mathematica-based questions, so I think the asker will benefit from it being here for at least a little while, and if nobody picks it up, then it can be migrated by all means. Also please don't take my comments as criticism: I have been a moderator too, and it is a difficult, thankless task that I would not readily do again. I just think you shouldn't make it more difficult for yourself than necessary by being too proactive. :)
With that, I'm off, too. Bye!

I appreciate all points made. Bye!

@Rojo Ok, but then does it really differ if I do Plot[..., PlotRange->Dynamic@range] instead of Dynamic[Plot[..., PlotRange->range],TrackedSymbols:>{range}] ? In both cases the full Plot[...] HAS to be updated when range is changed, so it does not matter, does it?

@IstvánZachar, it does differ. The full Plot is NOT recalculated when you do PlotRnage->Dynamic

I mean, for any other case, it would be an alleviation to use a local Dynamic (e.g. when updating a Point or such), but for PlotRange, the plot has to be redrawn.
@Rojo Hmm, yes, you mus tbe right. Best is to test it though.

@IstvánZachar, if Plot doesn't let you do that
because the "y" values it has to calculate, it gets from the plot range
you do a biig plot range in the plot, once, and then add a dynamic plot range with Show

@Rojo Ok, I restructured it and it IS faster this way! Buuuuuut....
So now all Plot/Graphics object are static inside the Show, and only the PlotRange option of Show is Dynamic. Updating is faster, but then it only updates if the mouse is moved. Otherwise the yellow arrow will just go past the edge of the panel. Some more expereimentation is required. Back to the drawing board.
Anyway, let's just call it a night, thanks for all the help, and see you tomorrow/Monday!

1:09 AM
@IstvánZachar, if you update the code perhaps I can take a look at it in a while

@Rojo Updated, with a bit of explanation. I'm afraid this post is starting to get bigger.

@belisarius Did you try JView the OP was referring to? If not I'll try it when I'm back at my PC

@R.M @verbeia @mr.wizard The tiff question has had an update that I hadn't noticed. Graphics file corruption apparently was the cause of all this. I now agree with the close reason and will delete it, as there's nothing to be learned from the question as it is now.
hi @Heike

1:41 PM
Hi @SjoerdCdeVries

I'm still working on my CUDA compilation getting to work again. Grrrrr

2:42 PM
Helloooooooooooo

R.M
oooooooo

oOO
What's up

R.M
me... barely out of bed

Me too
About an hour
or 2
Don't remember

2:57 PM
@SjoerdCdeVries I'm glad to hear that. I work all the time with 32-bit FITS files, and when you import them the values are changed to reals. It's not a problem for my application as it happens, but it is slightly questionable behaviour, which had led me to doubt the correctness some of the import converters.

@OleksandrR

@Rojo hello!

Hello
What do you think about this?
Letters drop, in blocks of 1x1 (for starters), and words that are formed, in any 4 directions, are eliminated
Letris

Sounds very clever! I like it!

Perhaps the blocks can have tetris-like shapes in higher leveles, etc, etc
Grrreat

3:00 PM
I think probably the blocks will have to be smaller than the Tetris ones in most cases (or the game board taller) because you will get a lot of cases where rows can't be made to disappear easily.
So 1×1 sounds fine to me.
It does mean that you won't be able to have the blocks become invisible in the highest levels like they do in Tetris though. :)

Hehe
If I code it properly and neatly, explain it well in the blogpost, and it's fun, then it sure will be extended in time by all of us

@OleksandrR Well, the question was about TIFF not FITS

@SjoerdCdeVries yes, I appreciate that. But 32-bit TIFFs aren't common, just like 32-bit FITS, so I had wondered if the problem might have been down to inadequate testing of this possibility. Glad to hear that it wasn't.

3:30 PM
@SjoerdCdeVries Nope. Just with the image editors/viewers I have around

@belisarius Question was updated. There's a new tiff now.

@SjoerdCdeVries Ok. Let's see

@belisarius I works now.

ohhh the Q was deleted

3:59 PM
@belisarius At least the problem was solved.

@Heike yep. But perhaps a Q about "image format validation in Mma" is in order
What is Daniel trying to say here?

Q: How to do System dynamics simulations / diagrams in Mathematica?

LuxspesSystem dynamics is an approach to understanding the behaviour of complex systems over time. It deals with internal feedback loops and time delays that affect the behaviour of the entire system. What makes using system dynamics different from other approaches to studying complex systems is the us...

and didn't exist before, I think

@acl I added those. "Animation" was not the problem
"system dynamics" is too broad for the question

acl
@belisarius right. I am just having a hard time imagining being useful

7:45 PM
@acl If we are going to accept questions about Modelica, I think they are needed

acl
8:20 PM
@belisarius then why not ?
I just think or are too broad
could be wrong though

@acl Because his q was not just for Modelica, but for any simulation "environment"

acl
8:37 PM
@belisarius so then we want ?

8:59 PM
@acl Perhaps someone with more experience in simulation than me should give his/her opinion

@markmcclure The question was deleted by an additional three members so I cannot respond to your comment there. Let me first state that I don't revel in closing questions. I've clearly stated on numerous occasions that I don't like closing questions too much as it may influence the friendly atmosphere we generally encounter here. I have contested the closing of questions here in chat as well in comments on quite a few occasions, as any regular here may attest.
Having said that, closing is sometimes necessary. The question we are discussing now involved just a dump of code and a request to explain that. The current community opinion that I distill from previous discussions in chat and meta is that those questions should be closed. The scope is overly broad, there is no clear question and there is no overarching theme involved here that could make it useful for someone googling for a Mathematica answer.
The community has also made clear that askers should show effort. That too was not the case here. The OP has already posted 5 questions and is therefore not a beginner anymore and should know better.
You said that you consider taking this to Meta. I'd encourage you to do so. I think I can speak for my co-mods here: we ask for opinions and we do listen. This is not a one-man show (or a three men show for that matter), this is a community thing.

For those interested in the question discussed here and with rep sufficient to see deleted questions, this is the question we are talking about:

10:19 PM
@bel I think is not a good tag because it can mean anything depending on what one is willing to call a simulation.

@SjoerdCdeVries I agree entirely that the asker hasn't shown much effort. Neither did some of his previous ones. But the FAQ does say "if your motivation is “I would like others to explain ______ to me”, then you are probably OK". So I think the question itself is on-topic by the letter of the FAQ. I think it would be possible to put together a nice answer that went through the code and explained it. (I don't have time to do that today, though.)
I don't know if it is possible to make it clearer in the FAQ that we expect people to make some effort in their questions.
@RM what about ? (with obligatory double-L synonym)
@SjoerdCdeVries actually, he's posted 9 questions? High school student - not sure how much effort we will get out of teenage boys :)

@Verbeia That sounds reasonable
