@IsaacMoses It's approaching our first Great Question.

3:18 AM
@ShmuelBrin And MY's second-highest non-PTIJ answer. I think the score got run up by the question getting lots of HNQ, Twitter, etc. play, since the Samoa thing was in the news, and SE-type people were into it.

Q: Mi Yodeya Haggadah Proposal

Double AALast night some folks were talking in Bam about assembling a Mi Yodeya haggadah or haggadah supplement, drawing from questions and answers here. We are commanded to ask questions and learn at the seder, and we've got questions! Users of the haggadah/supplement could use whatever subset they wante...

Pesach is coming
Is there any interest in fixing up the Haggada at all (were there typo?) or adding in a few new questions?

@DoubleAA There are some suggestions for improvement here:

Q: Feedback for "Hagada - Mi Yodeya?"

Isaac MosesIf you downloaded "Hagada - Mi Yodeya?" and certainly if you used it at your Seder, we would love to hear what you thought of it. Are there any improvements you'd suggest? Is there anything about it you specifically hope we don't change? Do you have any interesting stories about using it at a S...

Two years since, there are probably a significant number of good posts we could add, plus maybe improvements/new answers to old ones.
It's a little close for starting such a project.

@IsaacMoses If you could in the next 48 hours identify, say, 4 new posts to add, I bet that's a manageable amount of work. (not that I really have much experience in estimating work times like this)
Only if people want to do it of course
No pressure

... I see that we did H-MY, from when you suggested the idea until we went live, in 15 days. We stretched out the timelines for the next two projects, so that we could do more quality and meta-work, but hmm.

3:53 AM
Discussion about updating the Hagada shall be continued in a dedicated room: chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/21835/updated-hagada

@DoubleAA Thanks for your moderation

@IsaacMoses H-MY was exciting and energetic and got off to a really fast start. I wrote this blog post at around the 48-hour mark. Internet time is awesome. :-)
It's late here, so I look forward to catching up on the project tomorrow. TZT all!

@IsaacMoses For better or worse, we Jews can only start thinking about Pesach starting ~4 days after Purim.

@DoubleAA A certain rabbi I know posted on FB that he got his first shaila of the season on TU Bishvat 8P

Actually, I think they just deleted the post.

@Scimonster He's user #37. Shalom is even earlier.

What happened to user #1?

@DoubleAA When I was growing up, my dad would work all week and be able to clean for Pesach only on Sundays. Starting Teves or so, he would go around announcing "[number of weeks] days to Pesach!".
@Scimonster Well, I guess now we know.
@Scimonster We don't talk about user #1. He... we just don't talk about him.

@Scimonster You mean the original founder of Mi Yodeya? Bigtan and Teresh happened to him. I had nothing to do with it.
@Scimonster For some reason, at least in those days, the first user on an SE site got ID 2.

Q: Did Jews in Arab countries ever rely on Islamic calls to prayer?

MaimonistIt just occurred to me that Jews in Arab/Islamic countries would most likely have heard the adhan call the populace to prayer five times a day. Upon looking at an Islamic time-table and doing some research about their various schools and methods of calculation, I found that their scheduled times...

^^^ The good kind of interfaith question (in that it's about Judaism, contains a clear, Judaism-compatible motivation, and can be addressed without researching other religions)! HNQed. I am happy about this.

Q: New UI encourages askers to confirm or dispute duplicate votes

Shog9As of yesterday (March 9th), the banner shown to askers whose questions have attracted at least one duplicate close vote has a couple of new options: If the author clicks the first button, the question is instantly closed: If, instead, they edit, then the choice will go away... At least unt...

^^^ This is interesting. Anyone tried it yet?

@Scimonster Mi Yodeya was an SE 1.0 site that was then converted to 2.0. SO was created on the network from the start. Whether that accounts for the difference I don't know, but it's a difference... I can imagine that an import might have been implemented as "create the 2.0 site (with an auto-assigned user 1), then migrate the 1.0 site in".

@MonicaCellio I just checked, and it seems like Ask Ubuntu also starts from 2.

@Scimonster "Stack Overflow is different"
@Scimonster @MonicaCellio I conducted a binary search of stackexchange.com/sites#newest, and it seems that Chess, 2 years 10 months ago, is the last SE site not to have a UID=1, and Raspberry Pi, 2 years 9 months ago, is the first to have one.

4:45 PM
@IsaacMoses interesting -- thanks for the data-collection!

This morning, I was learning Mishlei 18 for the first time (ba'avonotai harabim), and I discovered new favorite verse: 18:2 "לֹֽא־יַחְפֹּ֣ץ כְּ֭סִיל בִּתְבוּנָ֑ה כִּ֝֗י אִֽם־בְּהִתְגַּלּ֥וֹת לִבּֽוֹ׃" "A fool hath no delight in understanding, But only that his heart may lay itself bare." Seems like it ought to have a place on our Mi Yodeya Meta WRT rants posted as questions.

Hey folks, as an outsider, I'm curious. Would you say your glossary has been beneficial to the community?

@Mr.Bultitude As an outsider, you're better-suited than most to tell us if it's beneficial!
... I haven't seen it cited very frequently in our posts, and it doesn't have that much exposure, for outsiders to find it. We should probably make a community ad for it.

@IsaacMoses Yeah we should.
Jan 2 at 17:45, by Isaac Moses
We already have a Community Promotion Ad for the link referencer, so it appears on the sidebar from time to time. Maybe we should make one for the glossary and other, similar features. — Isaac Moses 18 secs ago

@IsaacMoses Ah, I wondered if that was more its purpose. I would certainly say yes then.
2

@Mr.Bultitude You've used it to look up unfamiliar terms you see here?
@Mr.Bultitude How did you discover it?

6:11 PM
@IsaacMoses I don't remember. I just know that I have it favorited, haha.

@IsaacMoses An idea for how it might look: Have a picture of a post with lots of italicized and Hebrew terms, with a big ?? over it. Then have "confused by jargon? Mi Yodeya Glossary" below
Or something like that

@Scimonster Could work. It might make sense to include something in the copy about its being in ongoing development by the community.

@Mr.Bultitude @IsaacMoses I believe I've linked to it every time I used the word "lechatchila", for example....it's useful to me so I can talk in terms that I'm used to without wasting post space (and using awkward parentheses!! :p) for explaining them

@Shokhet Given that I'd visited the first question in that search, I bet that's how I originally found it. So its benefit seems pretty clear.

6:27 PM
@Mr.Bultitude Excellent. Kudos to @Shokhet. I'll try to behave similarly.
@Scimonster Maybe should also promote its use in posts by authors. I've added a nod to that in this FAQ entry
err I mean this FAQ entry

@IsaacMoses grrrr

@Scimonster Thanks for the fix

7:26 PM
@IsaacMoses Y'yasher kochacha again.
@Mr.Bultitude Nice to have the feedback. Thanks.

@msh210 Baruch tihyeh.

Do we have a new Karaite user?
The halachic writings don't have any bearing? See Double AA's answer for some of those. — Scimonster 16 mins ago
No they don't. This word is from the Eternal through Moses and Aaron. Leviticus 11 has the statutes and the explanations right here concerning animals. Having an animal as a pet is a non-issue. If YHWH did not have any statutes concerning the owning of animals as pets, then who are we to have commentary on the issue. — StevePaige 1 min ago

@Scimonster If he sticks around.
