@Batman excellent, wanting to spend money on it already! I just packed my toolbox for taking the bike over to Holland. If I go through all five spare tubes I'd consider myself a bit unlucky....
Mrs PeteH appears to be packed already.....and we don't leave for another 16 hours!

3:05 PM
Hi @PeteH! Going to Holland? That's excellent news!

3 hours later…

Hi @Rilakkuma yes, just finished packing. So few clothes, so much electronics!
Only thing I can't find is my swimming goggles. Time for a new pair I guess. But taking two sets of cycle gear, we're only there Tues-Fri so even two rides is quite optimistic
bibs, ss jersey, with a thermal top underneath. That's what I', wearing here at the moment so hopefully it'll be good over there.

6:39 PM
It's really annoying, they're only swimming goggles but I can picture the bloomin' things sitting there. Oh I hate that!

6:49 PM
Yay,got em! Only about 3 feet away from where I first looked! D'oh

Q: Can I replace only the smallest cog on my rear cassette?

MichaelI currently have a 12-30t rear cassette which needs replacing. While I'm at it, I really want to switch to an 11 tooth to get the extra 9% in top speed. But the problem is, even the most expensive (e.g. Ultegra) component that will work with my bike only goes up to 11-28, and if I stick to Tia...

this guy spends so much time in his top gear that it is jumping, where no other cogs are worn. Yet he says he finds a 30T useful. Is it me, or do you guys think this is a really unusual scenario?

@PeteH He goes up hills and also down hills? Doesn't seem unusual to me... On hilly rides, it's not uncommon for me to use the full 11-32 range on my compact double road bike...

@freiheit so if you imagined the time you spend in different gears, it'd be about even? For me, I picture somethig like a Gaussian distribution - using the middle gears a lot more than the extremes. Only perception, of course.
When I get my Di2 mech, I will know for sure ;)

7:22 PM
@PeteH Even? No. the middle gear ranges the most, with maybe a bit of bias towards the higher end. The lower gears when there's hills. The actual highest gear probably really only when there's a bit of a downhill or a strong tailwind.
But if you use all the cogs evenly, the smallest ones will wear out first.

I guess

@PeteH Interestingly, in the newer 11-speed Ultegra line, they do have an 11-32 cassette option. The website sucks for this info, but I'm pretty sure 105 has an 11-32 option, too.
Seems like in addition to the more obvious "Dura-Ace -> Ultegra -> 105" product flow over the years, Shimano is also adding more decent options for "non-racer with money" into the Ultegra line.

8:01 PM
@freiheit yes I must admit I was surprised to see the 105 come out as an 11-speed so quickly. It used to be convenient to think of technology starting at Dura Ace and trickling down over time, but I'm not sure that's the case any more. They certainly determined there must be a market at the 105 level

8:17 PM
I do wonder what their thinking is though, One of my bikes has a 9sp Tiagra, but Tiagra is now 10sp. So, when I come to renew parts, I'm wondering how obtainable they'll be. Will they force me down the product line in the hope that I'll say "sruff it" and upgrade the whole mech.
