This will get closed here very quickly. I think "programmers.stackexchange.com" might be a better fit. — Thilo 41 secs ago

MSE is back to "Programmers mode" again, looks really funny...
@Shog9 sort of update, 2 rep requirement seem to have been removed again today (June 21, 6-8 weeks after your last comment) and site appear to be flooded by blatantly off-topic SO questions again: 1, 2, 3, 4 - four questions in less than 10 minutes. I bet you'll have to revert the requirement back (while we're at it, how about setting similar requirement for Programmers askers having SO profile:) — gnat 3 mins ago

@JörgWMittag: (from programmers.stackexchange.com/questions/322788/…): ""only because the actual C code is generated" – Then you haven't written it ;-)" Actually, I did write the first version by hand. I was young and naive :-) I then discovered why you don't do this.

@PhilipKendall Laziness FTW!

That, and not wanting to spend hours tracking down copy-and-paste errors in a 1000-way switch statement.

How is it that we've to send a c-struct over the wire...? Like via a socket...

make sure there are no pointers in the struct and then just cast to void*
length of the data will be the sizeof
on the other side you cast it back and hope the endianess and aligns are the same

@ratchetfreak I recently did this... and to my surprise it worked. I suspect the dev on the other side of the wire may have done a bit of data massaging and not tell me.
from C# to C++/CLI over the wire to some proprietary embedded system. Unless we got lucky, it really wouldn't have "just worked."

I think this question is a better fit for Programmers SE. — jaco0646 14 secs ago

I think this might be regarded as too broad here, Daniel, and if a macro is not involved then it might not involve programming, in which case it is off-topic anyway. A good course of action is to assume that it can be done using a macro, make a start on it, and edit that attempt in. That might be a good way to tempt Outlook/VBA programmers from making suggestions on how to do what you wish to achieve. — halfer 28 secs ago

Has anyone here gotten into a software development career from a non-software development background? I've got a degree in biology and some python development experience and I could use some advice!

9:56 PM
How did you get Python development experience?

I was referred to a job working on a bioinformatics python module. I've been doing that for the past year, but my project is almost done and I'm going to need a new job soon. The trouble is I don't really have any web application or database experience.

What sort of work do you want to do?

not all software dev work is web

Continuing to work on scientific applications would be good, although I don't know how many places are hiring for that sort of thing. Honestly I'd be happy doing any sort of development work.
What's the best way to find out who's hiring? I've just got job blasts set up for Indeed and Linkedin, is there a better way? I'm not terribly well-connected to people in software development, which is another problem

10:13 PM
Well, Stackoverflow does have a jobs site.

Oh, I'm also keeping an eye on those jobs as well. Seems like most posting are for senior-level developers, though

If you have them, local Python meetups tend to be sponsored by people searching for Python devs.

Good idea, I'll take a look and see if I can find any in my area

Hah, yeah, I jusst joined ChicagoPythonistas

10:27 PM
@C_Z_ being able to code your way out of a wet paper bag it more valuable than a "senior" title on your previous job
though making sure the interviewer is convinced of your prowess is difficult

@ratchetfreak Just what I was thinking. I just think it would be hard for me to be considered for a job that's looking for 5+ years experience when I only have 1. In fact I just interviewed for a dev job but I was turned down for lack of experience.
