12:13 AM
@JimmyHoffa -1. Nobody ever needs to stop holding up pieces of spaghetti and shouting "I AM ZEUS!".

12:44 AM
@AshleyNunn just finished Ready Player One. I'm pretty sure you recommended that one - was awesome! Loved the pacing and overall style
I guess I have to get Armada now.

user15026
1:03 AM
I've not read Armada yet, so if you get to it before me, let me know how it is :)

user15026
If you like Zombie stuff and political thrillerish stuff, I highly recommend the Newsflesh trilogy

user15026
(I don't even normally do Zombies)

user15026
but these books were SO great

user55340

The three most dangerous things:
1. Programmer with a soldering iron
2. Engineer with a system patch
3. User with an idea

user15026
@MichaelT I......

user15026
what

user15026
no

user15026
not a thing

user15026
2:06 AM
how

user55340
The trick is that since this is such high value technology, I've got a USB dongle that needs to plug into the computer for it to work.

3:42 AM
@MichaelT estimated budget - $500
this kills me
To Read List: The Martian , Ready Player One, Armada, Newsflesh Trilogy

user15026
That's a good list

welp, I broke markdown

user15026
I think it's the multiline that breaks it

probably
got it

user15026
Ah, there you go :)

3:48 AM
10 edits later... lol

user15026
Hey, teh important thing is you got there :)

user15026
I should really read the Martian after I finish my re-read of Mercedes Lackey's Dragon Jouster books

user15026
because everyone makes it sound good

it's really good

user15026
I just....I don't see how it could end, based on the premise

3:49 AM
?? like what do you mean

user15026
Like the only way I can see it ending is that he dies

ahhhh
that's the rub, isn't it?

user15026
I see no other win condition based on the Goodreads synopsis

user15026
and I don't know if I can handle reading the WHOLE THING if he dies

you're going to love it then
well

user15026
3:51 AM
like I want to think he doesn't

maybe not

user15026
but I just can't see how it would even work

well, how he attempts to survive is the content of the entire book
seriously
go read it
before someone spoils it for you
if they do, stab them in the eye with a needle

user15026
It's kinda like playing Lifeline because like....I don't see how I can save this guy either

user15026
(although apparently dying is totally an end condition in that game)

4:09 AM
@AshleyNunn just read it already. like go out right now, and buy it, and read it
you won't sleep because you'll have it glued to your hands

user15026
It's actually on my ereader righ tnow

user15026
but I am just halfway through a series of 4 fantasy novels I have to finish first

12:33 PM
Happy Coffee Day

Questions that ask for general directions are typically too broad and are not a good fit for this site. People have their own method for approaching the problem and because of this there cannot be a correct answer. Give a good read over Where to Start, then address your post. — Kyll 40 secs ago

True or False: Assuming that no one is making modifications (deletes, reads, writes) and the order of files don't matter, if I have a java.io.File object and I call listFiles() on it, every single time I should get the same list of files. It doesn't matter if I call it on a local directory or network share (NFS mount or SAMBA).

@ThomasOwens the order may be different, and there can definitely be failure scenarios: Network goes down etc. But if no one adds or removes files from a directory, then ... the files in that directory won't change. You could rely on that for your happy path but truthfully I would never rely on the idea of a file structure remaining unmodified by outside actors.
You should at least have a guarantee in there that double checks and monitors for occurrence of changes to throw it into a failure scenario if such occurs

I'm running some test cases now.
I'm taking the same directory over SAMBA and I'm legit missing files. Sometimes, I call listfiles() and I just don't get every file

12:50 PM
who knows, it's Java, it's probably just making shit up wishing you'd leave it alone

I'm still running the test cases to find out what the final deal is. I do know that SAMBA is misconfigured here. It makes reads and writes extra slow.

@ThomasOwens maybe you shouldn't use SAMBA?

@JimmyHoffa No choice, really. That's how this remote directory is made available to me. By the same people who couldn't configure SAMBA properly, apparently.
I'm just trying to see if I did something wrong in my code or if they just screwed up hard.

people need to use better technology... everywhere you look, people using crapped of things where we have well known quality solutions.
@ThomasOwens it's Java, you did something wrong. No really, I would double and triple check your code for any possibility that your files list variable you're looking at which listFiles() is assigned into is being reused or accessed by multiple threads. Ensure you declare a new variable for listFiles() to assign into every time - and ensure it's local scope. That's what "this list keeps changing" smells like

@JimmyHoffa By "every time", I mean every time I run an algorithm.
I have a series of steps that process directories and their files recursively.

12:56 PM
@ThomasOwens every single time you call listFiles() - it should assign into a new local variable. Then you can check the list right after it's assigned each time for inconsistencies

When I reach the end, I've processed different files every time. Sometimes, I get all of them. Othertimes, I don't.
@JimmyHoffa In each execution of the algorithm, it's only called once on each directory.
Which is the test that I'm running now. I'm running each algorithm 10 times and capturing the list produced.

@ThomasOwens is it assigned into a new local variable each time? Or a local variable previously declared?

A new one each time.

and sometimes for the same directory it get's a different list vs. previous runs?

That's what I've noticed in live deployments of the application, yes.

12:58 PM
@ThomasOwens do you log the list immediately after retrieving it, or is there any processing of the list before that?

I'm trying to reproduce that in test cases, though. I've removed the processing steps and focused on how I gather files from the disk.
I'm logging it after retrieving it. But I've made a new project to strip out all the processing and see more details about the disk IO operations.

this is one of those rare cases where log4net saves my ass - I tend to log stuff like that as trace or debug, then in production I'd just flip the switch in the config file and see wth.
that all sounds a bit crazy. Perhaps the SAMBA is jacked or people are meddling with the files... One simple test case would be to take the same list and point it at a local folder and see if it's reproduced

No one has reproduced the issue locally. Only over SAMBA.
Which seems to indicate a screwed up SAMBA.

@ThomasOwens sounds about right.

Hmm. So far, none of my test cases have indicated a problem. This is weird.

1:05 PM
@ThomasOwens even pointing at Samba?

Although I think it only happens about 25% of the time.
And I haven't diffed all the results yet.
Although...maybe it's not a problem getting the file list, but a problem actually performing IO on the files themselves.
BAM! Found one.
It found 0 files.

@ThomasOwens cache the results in a local queue, dequeue one then :do until queue empty, dequeue, compare to previous, throw away older of the two, go to do until queue empty.
@ThomasOwens do you have exception handling? Perhaps SAMBA's rate limiting you - occasionally a listFiles() is given an exception

@JimmyHoffa I've been using my reading algorithms (three different ones, useful in different directory structures based on depth and size). So far, one always found all the files. Another has failed once.
I wonder if I am being rate limited.
Because the single threaded one (which performs the fewest reads/time) had no issues. As soon as I went to different threading strategies to decompose the work, I started running into issues.

Is there a way I can see how it's configured if I'm not an admin anywhere?

1:14 PM
> Sets the number of seconds between checks when a client asks for notification of changes in a directory. Introduced in Samba 2.0 to limit the performance cost of the checks. Avoid lowering.
^-- could be? Perhaps.

1:53 PM
You know what would be nice? if whenever a question is closed at -3 or more it prevented users from getting rep from answers

2:16 PM
@enderland it's like they say, it puts the lotion on it's skin or it gets the hose again.

Or maybe just removed rep after a month or so
so you don't have open/close rep wars :P

user41796
If I had to venture a guess, that's probably considered an annoyance and not a substantial issue for the rep system.

user41796
It eats at our sense of fair play - you shouldn't gain repz off of a crap question. But the counter point is the repz are supposed to represent that an answer was helpful. And it's certainly possible to have helpful answers to crap questions. The corollary being that those "helpful answers" make it more difficult to clean up the crap questions. And some of those votes come from snarky type answers mocking the question, which really aren't helpful.

yeah I don't expect this will ever work, probably invalidate 1/2 the rep on SO

user41796
And there's some sort of arcane rule about repz being taken away if a question is deleted. So that's the likely fallback answer for the truly crap questions

user41796
2:27 PM
I think it's something like if the score is >3 and the answer >6 months old at the time of deletion that it is allowed to stay. But I'm not positive on that. And there's detractors to that rule as well.

user41796
So I finally got amazon prime today as I needed to quickly buy some stuff I couldn't find locally and amazon could get it to me with prime shipping. So I'm going to spend the day listening to all of the Rush albums I haven't been listening to over the last decade. Given that noise levels at work have been increasing, I'm thinking this was a great purchase.

@GlenH7 what benefits did that give you? the 2-day shipping? or what?
or just the music streaming

user41796
Yeah, I'm hosting an event this weekend and needed a few things I couldn't find. So I'll have them by Thursday afternoon.

you could just have paid for the expedited shipping option once :P

user41796
The music streaming is icing on the cake at the moment, but may be what keeps me renewing it

user41796
2:34 PM
Free 30 day trial of Prime. :-P

oh. HAH

user41796
Free is cheaper than expedited shipping in my book

user41796
And I've been getting more and more annoyed at the comparatively low quality sound that pandora and spotify provide at their free levels

I do the paid version of spotify

user41796
Is their high quality stream noticeably better?

2:38 PM
I think so, but I'm connecting through a direct audio out on my ipod, through an amp, into nice headphones
The main thing I like it for is being able to cache music on my ipod

user41796
I'm listening on my nexus tablet, so it's just the headphone jack. I haven't looked into getting a direct audio out device for it yet.

Not all devices allow that too

user41796
I don't know if I can cache with Prime or not. I'll have to look into that. I'm guessing the answer is no since they wouldn't be able to authenticate me when my tablet is away from a wifi signal.

user41796
Looks like android 5+ supports DAC without rooting the device. That's good to know.

oh, neat!
I'm only on 4.4.4 I guess though

user41796
2:48 PM
One of the reasons I bought a nexus was to make sure I could get updates directly from the chocolate factory and not wait on an intermediary to update their kit too.

Yeah. That's the main disadvantage of Republic Wireless
Stagefright is making me consider just going with Google, they are offering a similarly cheap option now directly through Google

user41796
@enderland Have you seen this: fi.google.com/about

Yeah, the cheapest option is still almost 2x what we're paying with Republic (and already have the phones, too)

user41796
ah. I've been considering it. My main concern is availability when I travel. I don't travel often, but it's generally to places with poor reception. I currently have Verizon, who seems to do the best in areas like that.

user41796
Friends of mine with the other major carriers won't be able to get a signal whereas I'll be fine and can use my phone without worry.

user55340
2:55 PM
@GlenH7 the real advantage of prime starts showing up when you do regular orders. "Every two weeks send a box of a dozen instant coffee"

@MichaelT ugh kill me now, instant coffee? really?

user55340
@enderland it was an example.

user55340
The "ship it slow, give me $5" is also nice.

user41796
@MichaelT What's this? They'll discount for slower shipping?

You get an amazon credit

user41796
2:57 PM
That's cool.

user55340

user41796
That's really cool. I haven't looked at the prime pantry yet. I could see that making me very lazy. :-)

user55340
That's a completely different part of Amazon though. Pantry items.

user41796
yeah, my ex had used that once. Picked up lemon flavored oreos. Those were tasty.

user41796
I don't think I'll use the kindle portion much. The nexus screen just isn't that good for extended reading.

user55340
3:05 PM
Check out streaming video. And the Amazon made shows.

user55340
Catastrophe for example. A "TV" show that is only available via Amazon.

user41796
I've been toying with getting a TV for the basement and then a chromecast to hook up to it. The video streaming could really come in handy at that point.

user41796
I need to see what options I have to tap into my HTPC with my tablet or phone and then stream that to the chromecast as well

> [redacted] is a Certified Woman Owned Information Technology Staffing Firm that provides recruitment and staffing needs to organizations
why does someone feel the need to clarify "Woman Owned" in their linked-in description

user41796
@enderland qualifies them for some contracts or gives them preferential treatment

user41796
3:17 PM
woman + minority owned can lead to a double bennie

@GlenH7 I love how it's ok to put that, but if I put "Certified Male Owned" people would probably complain

user55340
Washington (iirc) gives tax incentives to certain ownership structures.

user55340
The certified aspect is "not just a figurehead "

user41796
@enderland arguably, it's a reverse discrimination. But I have zero interest in pursuing that conversation at the moment. Too big, too broad, too much to draw in to do the conversation justice.

user55340
It is indeed a mess of policy.

user41796
3:20 PM
^^^ Best summary I could think of.

user55340
Stating that one follows a given social stance in the company may attract people who are more enthusiastic about it.

user55340
One could read "we are an ISO-9000 company" or "we are a 100% certified agile shop" instead.

Or decline linked-in recruiter requests, I guess :)

3:34 PM
To buy packers tickets or not to buy packers tickets - that is the question

user41796
@Ampt You actually have the chance to do so?

not season tickets - no. Just for one game

user41796
I'd do it.

user41796
I don't even like football, and I'd still do it.

if I had a chance at season tickets I would be all over that like a fly on shit - those things are literally worth more than their weight in gold

user41796
3:35 PM
Just for the experience of being in the middle of one of their games.

I've been - girlfriend hasn't. But I guess that answers the question

A true test of a Wisconsin relationship, is it meant to be

user41796
Yeah, I'd definitely do it assuming the price hasn't been scalped too badly

oh it has

user41796
Oh. :-(

user41796
3:36 PM
Unreasonably badly? Or just reasonably badly?

well... how many multipliers does it take to reach unreasonable?

user41796
For example, you go to a theme park and you know the prices will be outrageous. You just learn to get over it

... and bring your own food

yeah it's definitely more than that lol
fuck it

user41796
Hmmm, that makes it a bit more difficult

3:36 PM
she's never been
it's a bears game

user41796
might as well

user41796
OH! Yeah, gotta go to that one. That'll be huge

daaaaaaaa... packers

yeah
She's gonna be upset because it's totally eating into her ring fund
but I kinda skimped last christmas

user41796
Pffft.

3:38 PM
so now I gotta make up for it

user41796
Go to the game.

well she threw out diamond stud earings too - and they're almost the same price
but at least I get to enjoy the packers game, right?

how committed is she to a diamond?

user41796
I'd go to the game first. You can always buy diamonds later

because... there are a lot cheaper alternatives which are visibly identical or better

3:40 PM
dude, I've had that talk with her a million times
she doesn't care that they are artificially inflated

these are basically better than diamonds - moissanite.com - superior in appearance and the "diamond stats"
and imo better, slightly less hardness but a lot better toughness (most people damage their diamonds through chipping, not scratching)

@GlenH7 yeah, I already placed the order
my wallet is over in the corner crying

user41796
Tell your wallet you'll be buying a few beers too and it can celebrate then

user41796
@Ampt - stubhub or something?

@enderland this looks interesting. I'll favorite it for later
@GlenH7 Ticketexchange

user41796
3:43 PM
ticketsexchange would make a better URL

user41796
@enderland Thanks for this link. It'll be quite a while before I'm buying jewelry again, I'm sure. But definitely good to know. Maybe I'll get myself some awesome cuff links.

user41796
@Ampt damn that'll be awesome

it damn well better be. The bears better not totally suck it up.
they will though. I just want an interesting game - that too much to ask for?

user41796
@enderland - have you purchased from moissanite? I started digging into the cuff link idea and now I'm intrigued

3:52 PM
@GlenH7 my wife's ring is a moissanite stone

does she know?

yeah
though I'm about 100% sure if I showed it to other people, the only way they'd notice is if they looked at it with a microscope

the thing is that she has a large perceived value in diamonds
I'm fairly certain she would think less of a larger ring, if it costed much less

why though? is it because the are sparkly? or an image thing? or a "that's how things have been done [because of absurd marketting issues]" ?

user41796
Cool. Looks like I'll have to buy loose stones and have a local jeweler make the links for me. Not a big deal though

3:54 PM
because of absurd marketting issues
and her family will all ask "Is that a real diamond?!"
and if she knows, she'll say no
she's really bad at lying

I dislike diamonds because they are completely controlled by a cartel and basically the demand is entirely a result of intense marketting
@GlenH7 yeah, that'd probably be easy (there are a few other places online you can find them iirc)

oh yeah
I know
I've tried explaining it
She understands but chooses not to care
trust me, it drives me nuts too

:)

man these are so cheap.

Yeah, the price difference (especially at higher carats) is crazy
Keep in mind that they are basically flawless stones (I think the "Forever Brilliant" brand is the higher end, which basically avoids any imperfections) too, so the higher you get the bigger the price difference - I read somewhere that bigger ones (1.5c+) apparently look too gaudy because they are so high quality, but all diamonds in that price range have lots of imperfections

4:00 PM
yeah. She was sending me 1-1.5C rings on tiffany in the 15k range (You know, just so she knows what I like, I don't have to spend that much.)
yeah, right :P

user41796
How about a hybrid approach and just don't tell her. Get the larger stone as moissanite and surround with a few diamonds. Then when she's asked if they are real diamonds, she can say "yes" without lying

I think that's the plan.

we bought some loose ones and brought them, so we could compare
you might do that (we returned them)
when she sees them next to diamonds and doesn't see any difference she may change her perspective too

lol. I love that you can just "Buy some loose ones." With diamonds that would be unheard of.

which you should totally use, if you buy a diamond

user41796
4:03 PM
Oh, you can buy loose diamonds too. Just expensive is all

yeah, for sure, that's what I meant

some places won't mount a stone you bring though, when we did this we brought the stones, and then they had to order it direct

huh. who did you use for the ring creation?

a local place (probably with ridiculous margins on the cost of stones :P)

@enderland I tried to talk her into a sapphire (they're her favorite stones) but she wouldn't even go for that
maybe I'll buy one of the loose stones to show her.
they need like a comparison box or something

4:07 PM
the forever brilliant are... totally indistinguishable from diamonds

I don't understand the crazy amount people spend on rings.. I got my wife a ring and diamond I thought it looked nice, it seems most people don't think something looks nice without a price tag on it of 10+ grand, hell to that. I spent way the hell less and my wife get's compliments all the time because it and it's setting look nice.

I think you're barking up the wrong tree here

One of my cousin's father told her boyfriend if he was going to propose to her he better show that he had 15 grand in his bank account. And the mind boggling thing is he spent 3 years courting her and saving up to do just that like this is still the victorian era. Because Dowry's aren't disgusting at all..

LOL. I would fail that so hard. Why would you keep 15k cash onhand... I got debts to pay and retirement accounts to invest in

what a tool
although
depends on how literally he mean bank account
if he just means 15k in assets to indicate the bf isn't a complete loser or incapable of managing his money, that's not totally unreasonable

4:14 PM
@Ampt we keep roughly 3-6 months worth of cash for unexpected things

@whatsisname right, on both sides I'm just dumbfounded that my cousin even went through with that. Way to go marrying some dipshit with no backbone and being in your 30's but still following the commands of your parents...

@enderland See, she does that, but I'm 6 months ahead in all my payments that I can do that in - which I think counts. She's not as convinced

@whatsisname of course it's unreasonable - it's tantamount to selling your daughter. Fuck that and fuck him, and fuck them for agreeing to such an idea.

Like my student loans - I could stop paying tomorrow and they wouldn't send me a bill until october of next year (or thereabouts)

user41796
@Ampt Easy enough to run a comparison. Figure out what you're saving in interest payments by being ahead of the payment schedule. Calculate what interest you may (or may not) have been making off the cash balance. Evaluate what other emergency funds you have. And assign subjective values to being ahead on payments vs. sense of security with account balances.

4:17 PM
@JimmyHoffa: was he expecting to get the 15k?

so @Ampt are you pre-paying interest then? or just making additional principle payments? it sounds like the former

@enderland hmmmm.... Good question. I'm not sure on that one. All I know is that I pay above and beyond what they ask, which moved my payment due date back.
I'm guessing I'm prepaying interest too then

what kind of loan lets you prepay interest
that doesn't make any sense

user41796
I'd ask and find out. You'd rather be paying down the principal. That will naturally decrease interest payments over the long term

student looooans
they make no sense at all

4:18 PM
@whatsisname lots of them do, it's a bullshit technique since people fall for it and yet get ZERO benefit

user41796
@whatsisname student loans as they're currently handled don't make sense.

like my parent plus loans are in my parents name... even though they were for my education. Oh, and there is literally 0 legal way to get them transferred to my name without killing off my parents

fair enough
sounds like a scam indeed

all I know is that if I stop paying tomorrow, I'm safe on those for a while - which is peace of mind, and very valuable for me

GAH THE NEW GOOGLE LOGO MY EYES.

4:20 PM
if I have a 30 year mortgage, and pay it off in 10 years, like hell i'm going to pay 30 years worth of interest

@whatsisname yeah, but if you pay extra on one month, that doesn't carry over to your next month, does it?

for any non-scam loan, anything you pay above your monthly payment goes 100% to your principle

@whatsisname does it matter? What right does he have to dictate his 30 year old daughters marriage choices? I can almost forgive him for being an old grumpy asshole from a bygone age, but the fact that they actually agreed to basically meet his demands to earn her freedom to do what she wants like a child earning a privilege is nonsense. As if the marriage of a women is a privilege owned by a man to give, next is he going to tell her if she can or can't have a kid? Not allowed to have pockets?

user41796
@Ampt I pay an additional amount every month on mortgage that goes against the principle only. Over the long run, I'll have a shorter loan length and will have paid much less interest.

then your remaining interest is charged based on your outstanding principle, every month

user41796
4:23 PM
You still have to pay your monthly bill, but it's whittling away at that mountain a little bit more quickly

I don't think it's unreasonable for a guy to not want his daughter to marry a loser
and it seems his 15k in the bank is short hand for not a loser
the real question is what he would have done had the guy not had the assets

@whatsisname I don't either, I think it's unreasonable to demand it, but even more unreasonable to accept arbitrary demands on your freedoms
@whatsisname the guy didn't, they saved for 3 years to get them

it appears that the extra was, infact, going towards my principle

/rant

hmmm... it appears that they pay ahead my account, and I don't pay for interest on the extra, but they give me the chance to let it sit and accrue interest anyway, which is how they get you I suppose

4:27 PM
new rant topic! @durron597 Apparently before 1970 a large portion of the congresses votes were done in secret ballot so special interests couldn't pay/penalize legislators based on their votes. Go!

@JimmyHoffa I derive probably a more-than-average amount of pleasure from driving, and do it a lot, so I think that my car payment is worth it. All but one day of the month, anyway. Hahaha
@JimmyHoffa oh, lets bring this back!

@Ampt hah true, I'm with you there; having a nice car makes driving a lot sooo much better.

@JimmyHoffa the tech makes a world of difference - current car has adaptive cruise control. Literally all I have to do for the 2.5 hour insterstate drive each monday is keep the car between the lines. the jeep will brake and accelerate as necessary to keep me from crashing into the guy in front of me.

I will never have a car payment again.....

can you jump in the backseat for a minute or two?
or wait you said you have to keep it straight

4:30 PM
@Ampt I bought a BMW years ago because I drove a lot and for me it was unbelievably quiet from the insulation and general construction which was awesome, throw in seat warmers, soft comfortable leather seats et al... being on the road for a couple hours a day was much nicer in that than this old beater I drive now

my wife wants me to get a new car but I don't want to cough up all that money

@whatsisname If I get one of those car locks and put it juuuuust right on a long straight part of the road, probably, yeah.

@whatsisname they have lane assist, too

yeah but his jeep doesn't necessarily have it

@enderland mine does not - newer model does. C'est la vie

4:31 PM
@whatsisname it's fine, anyone can login to his jeep in the morning and assist his steering for him

lol

@JimmyHoffa actually thats one of the few things they can't hack. No electronic steering!
they can, however, kill my brakes and redline my engine.

@Ampt so you're saying you do have a hackable jeep? Is that really wise to say in here?

@JimmyHoffa BRING. IT. ON!

haha

4:33 PM
lol in reality they've patched the bug from the server side
Since it all goes through a central auth server to begin with

@Ampt yeah, and we all know how secure and well applied patches are

@JimmyHoffa I FEEL SUPER SAFE!
THANKS FIAT CHRYSLER OF AMERICA!
but think of all the money I get when someone crashes my car and I sue FCA!
I can probably afford one of those real diamond rings! (Bringing it full circle folks)

@Ampt good point! Can you unpatch it??

your GF will get a huge insurance settlement of your insurance money, when you're dead she'll be able to buy a huge ring!

4:37 PM
ugh their newest logo...so...ugh..

that whole video was for a new typeface on their logo?

how much money do you think they spent to come up with that new wretched logo

$XX,XXX,XXX
maybe even 9 figures. Think of all those user focus groups

@whatsisname they no longer traffic in petty concerns like money, they just titled someone overlord of something and moved on

gah why aren't my threads terminating?
bad threads.

4:41 PM
anyway I need to go find my second cuppa and something to nibble before I can get back into the guts of the application I'm hacking at. Wrote the whole DAL with 6 sprocs and hooked up to a REST web service this morning to work with the structures I slung together yesterday. Now I need to start making the web client app I been working on send the data...

@ThomasOwens kill the parents!

does that mean I'll have four batmans?

dunna dunna dunna dunna...Bat threads?

@ThomasOwens think of how great gotham your program will be!

@ThomasOwens you'll need a Jeeves thread if you want them to be even remotely useful

4:43 PM
One thread ends. It sets a value to false. When the other threads see that value as false, they should terminate on their next loop.
It looks like they aren't looping, though. They just...hang.
I hate debugging with threads, though.

@JimmyHoffa Also lowers transparency and makes it harder to make deals.
Also, currently not all votes have to be roll call, many aren't.

Because as soon as I had breakpoints, I'm not going to be able to reproduce this, I bet.

@ThomasOwens Heisenbug?

o_O My breakpoint isn't even being hit.
It's the third line in the run method.

@ThomasOwens Maybe it's deadlocking, e.g. it stops at the beginning of the synchronized block because another thread has the lock

4:48 PM
No synchronized block. I'm using a concurrent collection.
I've got one thread that is stuffing the data in, and 4 threads reading data out.

Maybe the collection is empty?

The breakpoint is on if (!stillReading && collection.isEmpty()) break;.
Of course, I have curly braces. I just wanted a one liner for chat.

put the breakpoint at the first line instead of the third line

I just moved it, but that's weird.
Nope. Not hitting the breakpoint there, either.

Are you in Eclipse?

4:51 PM
Yeah.

@ThomasOwens There's a suspend button
in the debug screen, click on a thread.

Oh. Oh.
Oh. It looks like they all got to take() from the collection.
That's...weird.
Maybe I shouldn't be using take()...I don't want them to block. :\ I don't know why today is the first time I've seen this.
