In java, while subclassing, instance method override and static method hide. I did not get the meaning of override and hide. what is the difference?

You need to ask a specific question in order to get the best out of stack overflow - to discuss different methods of technology perhaps try programmers.stackexchange.com "Q&A for professional programmers interested in conceptual questions about software development" — Kevin S 20 secs ago

@Mathematics Good [morning / evening / day]!

hi!!

@jane Good [morning / evening / day] to you too!

it's evening here now, how are you today? it's kinda lonely the last time I left this chat room it's lively, now there's only two of us

A lot of the "regulars" are in here during business hours in the USA

1:25 PM
happy coffee day
3

oh yeah, hi!
you guys are programmers?
I wanna ask some question about objective c if you don't mind :)

It's morning here on the east coast :)

except for Ashley

@RespectMyAuthoritah it's morning everywhere. Except where it's happy hour.

hi @Telastyn :)

1:27 PM
@JimmyHoffa It's coffee hour
same difference

you drink coffee at evening as well?

Not really sure who among the regulars knows objective C to any quality, @MichaelT likely does. We can help out with conceptual stuff but you may need to wait 'till he shows his face to get any specifically objective C syntax type stuff answered - though SO can answer a lot of that directly

@MichaelT knows a lot about pretty much everything

I indeed know no objective C

@MichaelT for Whiteboard principle chief staff lead architect engineer
3

1:30 PM
ooohh, I think it's not about the syntax, my question is about the capability of one the classes in objective c though, specifically uibezierpath
but I could wait :)

@jane likely a good question to ask directly on SO - you'll get a fast answer from someone there who's memorized the libraries

@Telastyn what languages do you know?

@jane don't worry about @Telastyn, he's just a bot @MichaelT wrote in dc

pssh

lol
no, seriously though, now I'll ask anyone that's here.. what languages do you know guys?

1:33 PM
@jane I have a scar forming on my pinky

@JimmyHoffa why? what happened?

at one level or another, C#, C++, C, Java, perl, php, Tangent, Haskell, F#, JavaScript, a few SQLs... Pascal, Matlab... probably more I'm forgetting.

@Telastyn I like how you included Tangent, nice touch

hey, if I don't know it...

You guys know each other personally?

1:37 PM
How can you know a bot? AI isn't that realistic yet

Oh yea... haha

IRL? not at all. Online? Barely.

what's IRL?

in real life.

oh
you can't know @JimmyHoffa IRL because you're a bot like what he said :)

1:40 PM
I believe few bots could hate humans quite as much as I do.
(HK-47 not withstanding)

s/humans/liquidious fleshbags/f

user55340
@Telastyn they hate us because we like Eliza more.

@Telastyn are we sure GladOS is impartial and not actually hateful? If that's hate, it's definitely of a quality you probably can't match. If you can, please never start sciencing.
(Portal was in the horror genre, right?)

no idea, never played it.

user55340
It started out as a physics engine demo. Someone said "this is fun" and it became a game.

1:51 PM
@Telastyn a mod account on a forum I was on before was "HK-47" heh

@MichaelT and here I thought it started out as a potato..

user55340
The "see through portals" was the initial challenge for the engine. Think about the nature of that.

yeah, familiar with the mechanics and history

Apparently, today's flavored coffee is...coffee flavored coffee.
I don't like the flavored coffees, though. :\ But this is meta.

@ThomasOwens ... huh? So you do like the coffee flavored coffee, or the flavored coffee is coffee flavor and you don't like it because it's flavored (with coffee?).
I approve of how you fit the word coffee into your first statement 3 times; nearly 50% of the total words there are "coffee", I do not however approve of the semantics of your construction...

2:07 PM
ok. rant against operating systems, but how do you get them to not be dumb when they run out of free memory (even with plenty of standby memory)?
I have this problem on Win7 and Mac OS:X
that the free memory gets close to 0mb and then the system slows way down
in spite of plenty of standby memory
which theoretically should be freed up to be used

eh?

@enderland faster disk or turn off swapping - the ladder will in windows at least result in you nearly running out of memory and getting a message "Shit gonna get troubled in a minute...close something or I will lose my mind."

This happens, and then apps slow to a crawl
@JimmyHoffa you mean my 5400rpm encrypted disk isn't good for performance? say it aint so!

(it will too - windows running out of memory without being allowed to page to disk will start getting gonzo, so heed the warning)
@enderland you could get something else for page and configure your page file to write to it (or at least make an unencrypted partition to page to)

so my page file is 1/2 my RAM, 4000mb
maybe that's the problem? it seems that recommendation is 1xRAM not 1/2xRAM

2:14 PM
Matt Sherman on July 29, 2015
I was asked this question twice in the past week, by colleagues who work with our clients. It’s a great question…

@enderland when you get near the cap on disk and physical both - it's going to start doing a lot of swapping back and forth "need to get this location... oh it's on disk read from disk, oh crap I'm almost out of physical, need to put that back on disk write to disk, ok now I need this location...oh it's on disk...."

@JimmyHoffa I know! but why doesn't it just clear standby memory? I periodically use RAMMAP to blow away all standby memory and "magically" my system gets faster

you could be seeing that if you keep your page file too small. Alternatively your page file is just slow because it's on a 5400rpm encrypted partition
@enderland what is "standby memory" ?

@JimmyHoffa as I understand, it's basically cached... stuff, that is not actively being used, but it helps launch things faster
so if you start an app, then close it, the application might sit in standby memory so when you launch it again it is "already" loaded
course my backup service using 500mb of memory probably doesn't help, either

don't ask me, I don't have your problems. How much ram do you have?

2:18 PM
8gig, on 64bit win7

that's plenty

I wonder if having a minimum page file size of 4gig matters
maybe the minimum size should be smaller?

Perhaps you just have viruses. Yep.

:)
the only virus I'm worried about is that our virus scanner probably goes OCD and checks every file on my computer ever 1 minute while the backup service uploads 1gb per hour

@enderland either turn up your maximum to avoid swapping, or turn off your page file - to avoid swapping. With 8 gig you can get by without a page file unless it's like your work machine where you're running 80 processes and can't close them without losing work productivity
(it's not your work machine you refer to, right?)

2:22 PM
@JimmyHoffa it is my work machine (though my home computer has same problmes)

@JimmyHoffa I have not tried the coffee flavored coffee. Should I?

except my home computer has an SSD so performance problems are way not as bad

I'm about to get another cup. I was going to go for regular medium roast, though.

@ThomasOwens I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about anymore. You (like|dislike) some (un?)flavored coffee. That's all I got from your sentence

@JimmyHoffa I dislike most flavored coffee. I almost always drink unflavored coffee, preferably a light or medium roast.

2:23 PM
@ThomasOwens ah, well yes of course, because flavored coffee is weird.

@JimmyHoffa But today's flavored coffee is supposed to be coffee flavored, according to a coworker. It seems meta enough to warrant my attention.

@enderland no idea what your trouble is- I haven't had issue with machines slowing down in years....

@JimmyHoffa not helpful :P haha
though I wouldn't wish this upon anyone, it's annoying

I gave you two solutions to try :P I'm fairly confident one of them will work (how quickly do you fill up your physical memory?)

@JimmyHoffa it happens fast, I'm not really sure why though - I do have a lot of applications open
@JimmyHoffa I'm playing with the pagefile settings, but they require a reboot to take effect

2:27 PM
likely a problem of which applications you're running then

Well the problem app is Lync, which slows to a crawl when around the 0mb free point

I mean it when I say it's been years since I've had troubles with computers from ram exhaustion

I'm voting to close this question as off-topic because questions about software licensing are off-topic for Stack Overflow. See this meta question for more details; it does suggest that you could ask this question over on Programmers Stack ExchangeAHiggins 11 secs ago

@enderland that's just an effect - no proof of cause. Maybe it's the virus scanner choking Lync with distrust, maybe Lync is just a UI that doesn't deal with ram starvation well and another application is starving your system
How much memory is Lync using?

186mb (wtf)

2:29 PM
@enderland that's not bad
it's using 136 on my machine

it has written 417mb to disk and only read 13mb though, that seems.. problematic

hell mmc is using 140
@enderland heh probably not
Do you have no applications using like 1.5+gb on your system?

@JimmyHoffa not even close, 338mb is my backup service and most for "memory (priate working sets)"

how much free memory do you have?

right now, 1700mb (I just used RAMMAP to empty standby memory)

2:53 PM
I'm scared of the coffee-flavored coffee. Sounds like margarine with trans-fat.

Happy Coffee day!

338 MB for a backup service is obscene. What did they write it in, ColdFusion?

@RobertHarvey google suggests java :)

[sigh]
It probably has a hundred interfaces in it.

Happy Coffee Flavored Coffee day.

@enderland Does that mean I have to get Zimperium’s advanced Enterprise Mobile Threat Protection solution?

Let's assume I have an XSD. Let's say I have a complexType X and element X defined. Then, I have a complex type Y that is an extension of X.

@ThomasOwens take an antibiotic

I also have an element Y.
Does that mean the both <Y></Y> and <X xsi:type="Y"></X> are both valid? Is there ever a reason to not allow both?
Maybe I should write up more detail and ask a question on the main site, but I'm trying to figure out exactly how much detail I need so I can provide it.

Hell, I'm not even sure if my question makes sense. But I have someone saying that <X xsi:type="Y"> is the only way. I don't think so - if I have a thing that is of type Y, the opening tag in the XML should be <Y>.

@ThomasOwens That sounds like a Stack Overflow question not a progs one, no?

I'd consider it a design question.
Both are technically valid XML (as far as I can tell, by validating against the schema).

6:49 PM
@ThomasOwens I'd say there's no value in naming your tag after your type - and that you should expect to often not have them named the same. For instance, two elements of the same type, they're likely to have different element names

@JimmyHoffa That's true. But I don't think that's what I'm asking.

Just like in code for the string type, there are variables with many different names, so should it be in XML

Just because the complex type and element are the same name isn't really relevant here. It's more about the <X xsi:type="Y"> to indicate the real type of the element, or just <Y>. I think <Y> is cleaner and nicer.
And should be the preferred approach.

@ThomasOwens it will be too common to need elements to have names that don't mirror their type, I would plan to make that scenario as pleasant as possible because the alternative scenario needs no planning to ensure it doesn't become incoherent
Always design to make the most unpleasant but still common scenario as pleasant as possible, or else people will work around your designs to accomplish that scenario. No one comes up with workarounds just to accomplish the naive scenario because it will be easy enough. Mmm red curry potato chips... spicy

I honestly don't understand what you are saying.

6:55 PM
@ThomasOwens you say that as if what I'm saying makes sense to begin with

In my example, if I also had a Z that extended X, then I would expect <Z></Z> and not <X xsi:type="Z">

@ThomasOwens what about when Z doesn't extend X but rather uses it for a different partition (this X is for SQL but this X is for oracle, they hold the same precise information but are consumed separately/differently)
now you have <X> and <Y xsi:type="X"> and there's no avoiding it

@JimmyHoffa I don't know how that could possibly happen.
So I'm saying that both should be valid for both production and reading. The other side is that only <Y xsi:type="X"> is valid because you remove the top level elements associated with X.
So you'll have a complex type Y and Z, but not an element Y and Z.

nope, I don't know what you're talking about at all
How 'bout that JSON

Should I ask this on SO or Programmers? I think it's a design question.

7:00 PM
I think the red curry potato chips are a failure, too much cardamom

@JimmyHoffa Don't you ever talk that way to me. NEVER! NEVER! What we've got here is failure to properly celebrate coffee day.

accept the mean: 3.5 spaces per indent level. Next question: how do you round numbers?

the best rounding strategies alternate direction, so you'd have half the lines at 3 spaces and half at 4 spaces

@jane one thing to note is that I don't use the desktop web browser based chat during the day - this isn't my "the other monitor". I use a mobile interface for chat... which... well... it sucks. I don't want to have the web sockets open to a site called 'chat.something.com' all day in case some curious network admin pokes at whats still sending packets at 2am. So, if you do want to ping me to get me to notice something - ping me... or engage in the evening (GMT-5 for timezone).

user55340
... then I can be a bit more verbose.

user55340
If one pokes at my chat user profile, one can clearly see me getting into work, taking lunch, getting back from lunch (and browsing things) getting home, and the evening activity.

@ratchetfreak Nope.
