This may be better suited for Programmers. — Chief Two Pencils 57 secs ago

@ChiefTwoPencils this has already been closed on P.SE. The community on P.SE tends to take a rather dim view of questions about certificates: Why do certification questions keep getting closed? I would also suggest reading What goes on Programmers.SE? A guide for Stack Overflow as career and education advice (such as this) is specifically listed as off topic there. — MichaelT 30 secs ago

For a 'fun' time... create a document with the EURion constellation embedded in it, and try to get someone to give you a printout or copy of it.

user55340
The EURion constellation (also known as Omron rings) is a pattern of symbols incorporated into a number of banknote designs worldwide since about 1996. It is added to help imaging software detect the presence of a banknote in a digital image. Such software can then block the user from reproducing banknotes to prevent counterfeiting using color photocopiers. Research shows that the EURion constellation is used for color photocopiers and is likely not used for computer software. == Description == The name "EURion constellation" was coined by Markus Kuhn, who uncovered the pattern in early 2002 while...

Welcome to Stack Overflow. Please read the About page soon. I think that it is hard to provide solid answers to this; answers will be primarily opinion based, which is one of the reasons for closing a question. You should check to see whether Programmers would be a suitable place to ask this sort of question. — Jonathan Leffler 1 min ago

@psr - The object database article at Wikipedia seems to be have attracted mentions of databases that don't seem to store entire objects (values, graph, behavior). MUMPS documentation says it is a hierarchical database. Do you think it fits in the object database article?

11:16 AM
@ratchetfreak Thank you for the link which, by the way, says software licensing questions are on topic. I also checked in programmers.stackexchange.com/help/on-topic and this question appeared to be a good match for the two bulleted lists. The Q&A I referenced above also recommends programmers.s.c so could you please explain where I went wrong. — AdrianHHH 25 secs ago

This is horrible and hacky...but it works.

@ThomasOwens oh?

I should get this to a small example and post on CR...there has to be a better way.

11:57 AM
Just finishing up a refactoring before I minimize and post. But the short story is that I want to emulate a union. Enums (my original implementation) don't work since you can't make a type hierarchy out of them in Java. So I made a public abstract class with the common public final elements and a private constructor. Inside of that class, I defined a few public static classes that extend the abstract class. So now, I have a hybrid enum union.

There are other sites in the Stack.-Network which might be better suited for that questions, since SO is mainly oriented towards bug-fixing ;-) Have a look at softwarerecs.stackexchange.com or programmers.stackexchange.comMBaas 21 secs ago
@MBaas This question is not appropriate for Programmers. Recommendations for software packages are, just like here on Stack Overflow, off-topic. In the future, please don't suggest that people go to sites if you don't understand what that community accepts. — Thomas Owens 14 secs ago

Hey guys, I wanted to throw out a question here before going to Meta.
We have a line in our FAQ's on-topic page that I'd like feedback on.
> coding tools, such as compilers, debuggers, and IDEs (ask on Stack Overflow instead)
Does this imply that there are some tools (requirements management tools, architecture and design tools, test tools, project management tools) that are OK to ask about here?
These are certainly not "coding tools". But are tools that support the on-topic areas on-topic on Programmers?
Specific examples: DOORS, Enterprise Architect, Dia (?), certain Eclipse plugins, StarUML. You can go further and bring in code review tools, like Gerrit and Collaborator. I'd recommend ecxcluding build tools like Jenkins, though.
Or should coding tools be changed to "tools" and refer users to both Stack Overflow's /help/on-topic and Super User's /help/on-topic and make all tool questions off-topic?

2:00 PM
Geez I need to start watching BBCA more often... yesterday it was Dr. Who, Hells Kitchen and Top Gear, now it's ST:TNG

BBC America is awesome.
If you haven't got into Orphan Black yet, do it.

@enderland ugh, I'm starting to think all of us here should just start our own company. One with beer! and hookers!

2:22 PM
Ok.. Thanks for the feedback. SO is supposed to be the go-to place for programmers to ask questions. Also not sure how this question was "off-topic" as I'm trying to figure out how to design my cookbooks. — Nick 1 min ago

user55340
The Java / JavaScript DSL question could use a better title.

user55340
@ThomasOwens tools: all tool questions is simpler to understand. That there are two sites where such questions are on topic helps clearly define the bounds in scope rather than fuzzy lines.

2:41 PM
@MichaelT That's one way of thinking about it. But are questions about using design tools for model based development or requirements management tools actually going to get good answers on Stack Overflow and Super User, or is the kind of audience that we want on Programmers also the people needed to answer those questions?

@ThomasOwens Sounds to me like this should be taken to Meta in it's own question

@durron597 I think I'll write one up at lunch.

user55340
2:58 PM
@ThomasOwens you might want to build on (or refute) the where does my git question go.

user55340
19
Q: Where does my git question go?

MichaelTYou've got a question about git. Its not uncommon, lots of people have questions about git. But where should the question be asked?

@MichaelT I think your git answer is correct.

user55340
I do to... That's why I wrote it. ;-). The specifics of a how to do something vs how to use something is the nuance between where a tool question goes.

@MichaelT I guess my concern is that Programmers tends to be geared toward people working in a company environment. Stack Overflow is for everyone writing code. I think more people on Programmers are likely to be able to answer questions about how to use DOORS, Rhapsody, Enterprise Architect, etc. than people on Stack Overflow or Super User. That could be a faulty assumption, though.
There is a good mix of answered and unanswered questions on SO for [doors] and [enterprise-architect].

user55340
Note the difference between how do I do specific task in tool vs how do I use this tool to aide in this workflow.

3:09 PM
@MichaelT I'm specifically referring to "how do I do specific task" questions.

user55340
I really don't want "how do I chsnge the color in Microsoft project" questions.

Yeah. It's a weird line.
I think I'm going to change "coding tools" to "tools" in the proposed FAQ on Meta and add a link to Super User.

user55340
That is probably safest.

user55340
Note that we don't close the use questions - there are even a few on the front page now.

Maybe we need a "Where do I ask my tools?" question on Meta that's part of a FAQ. Because development tools go to SO, general tools go to SU, but there's also the Apple and Unix/Linux sites that could be good for OS-specific tools.
Can I write that up at lunch?

3:19 PM
By all means.

A: Is there an anti pattern for historically grown software?

Jimmy HoffaYou refer to technical debt. We all accrue technical debt in the products we develop over time; refactoring is one of the very common and effective ways of reducing this technical debt, though many companies never pay down their technical debt. These companies tend to find their software extreme...

A number of development tools already have questions and answers on Stack O...

Comments and edits appreciated, btw.

psr
@dcorking It's hard to answer because it isn't clear exactly when you are an object database and when you aren't. ANSI standard MUMPS doesn't support objects in the language, so that seems dubious. The biggest MUMPS vendor today, Intersystems, has added OO extensions to MUMPS, including a framework for persisting objects. The "pointers" to other objects aren't disk locations though, just a key (possibly compound) used to find the referenced object in a B-Tree(ish?) structure.

programmers.stackexchange.com/a/277355/6644 is it just me or is this way more complicated than necessary

user114359
@whatsisname that answer has way too much code and not nearly enough explanation for Prog.SE

psr
@JimmyHoffa OMG, he had citations for his grammatical fixes.

@psr not so much a citation but a "this is how you should use these words"
kind of how some people would add a lmgtfy.com link to a comment

4:40 PM
@Ampt it's a marginal question, tbh. Low votes, low views === "meh" I'm pretty certain I answered what they were asking even though they didn't realize the full breadth of what data binding provides.

Was going to ask if you saw something in there worth saving
and then ask you to save it hha
Into the trash it goes!

A: Why do interviewers focus so much on why you want the job?

durron597I am a programmer who also does most of the interviewing for my company and I would say this is the single most important question that I ask a candidate. Why? We are a very small company, just five people - I can't speak for why larger companies ask this question. I come in on the weekends when...

user114359
You do not have much rep on that site, that is why.

thought that was on progs
I was about to go all medieval on that question

@Ampt It made the hot questions list, and I wasn't kidding, the answer to that question really matters to me

user114359
4:53 PM
I scrolled up too to cast my close vote then I saw the graphic theme

Had to answer it in spite of many other answers

we talked about that yesterday
in here even

@Telastyn Oh is that your +4/-4 answer?

its up to +6/-5 now.
I still find other answers absurd. Everyone is going to give you some sort of "I am really interested in your company, your products, and think I can be a great help!"
Everyone
you're not learning anything by asking the question.

@Telastyn You can tell when people mean it, and when they're just BSing you. At least I think I can.

5:00 PM
you're testing candidates' ability to lie.
uh huh

user41796
@Telastyn It's a perfect way to start off what's going to be an adversarial relationship, right? :-P

thats true for a lot of classic interview questions
the great "what's your worst weakness" type BS is a classic

if you're really interested in their self motivation, ask about their hobby projects.

@Telastyn I don't care if they love to spend hours building ships in a bottle or running an ironman
I care if they will care about the work that we're doing. If they find what we do interesting

user15026
@whatsisname I hate that shit.

5:03 PM
I care if they're competent.

@ratchetfreak in other words, a small tip to make clear how bad at writing I am.

Maybe a candidate will be able to successfully BS me. But not all of them can, and I really doubt the question will produce any false negatives

interesting work isn't necessarily engaging work.

user114359
@Telastyn I threw you a +1 too, it was down to 0. I do not have enough rep to see the +/- totals though.

@whatsisname That question sucks, but "tell me about a difficult domain-related problem you faced and how did you overcome it?"

5:04 PM
and asking a question that 80% of candidates will lie about is a waste of my time.
@Snowman - thank you.

@Telastyn people are so hung up on formality. It's all like a secret handshake or a hoop to jump through. "Will the dog lick my hand if I feed him? Good, subservient, he can be trained."

yeah. one of my job applications had one of those personality assessments as part of it

there's tons of stuff in interviews that serve no valid purpose like that. "Are you interested in this job?" -> "??? I'm here. Are you stupid?" oh wait..

@Telastyn Three minutes to determine if a candidate is in the 20% that doesn't care and won't lie about it, plus filtering out the candidates that are lying and it's obvious, is worth it to me.

user15026
@JimmyHoffa This gets even better for retail/min wage/food service jobs. Like....I am here because I need money. It's obvious to everyone. But you still gotta lie.

5:06 PM
many years ago I interviewed at NWA for a gig, and they gave me the same interview they'd give a potential flight attendant or gate desk person

1 out of 10 for attitude, managability and socialibility

and it was all that stupid crap
complete waste of everyones time

@JimmyHoffa Are you interested in this job or are you desperate for any job is an important distinction.

the other 20% really are interested and aren't lying (in my experience)

@AshleyNunn "I am EXCITED about this opportunity wearing your uniform, standing still, and smiling for 6 hours 4 days a week!"
@durron597 And who the hell says the ladder?
again, it tests one's bullshit abilities

5:07 PM
@AshleyNunn I wouldn't ask this question for a retail/min wage/food service job.

user15026
@JimmyHoffa Pretty much. Like if I get asked that today, I have no idea what to say to it.

@durron597 "How good is he at selling me on what he knows I want to think?"

user15026
@durron597 you wouldn't, but they all do.

user41796
@JimmyHoffa I've had folk say the latter. They've been honest about "current job isn't that great for sanitized reasons. Want to move on to anywhere else."

formalism. People love it.

5:07 PM
@JimmyHoffa Some people actually like their jobs. Maybe you don't.

user15026
Like I will be really, really shocked if "Why do you want to work at <payday loan company> does not come up at all.

user41796
They'll throw some fluff in there about "this does seem interesting..."

if people liked it, it wouldn't be called work.

@AshleyNunn: some places like that are genre-savvy

user41796
@AshleyNunn Because you want to help the most vulnerable segments of our society? :-)

5:08 PM
and won't bullshit around with that kind of nonsense

@GlenH7 and you've had far more who lied to you in answering that question.... so what's the point of the question again?

Wow the cynicism in this room is palpable

user15026
@GlenH7 That's kinda where I am mentally heading with it - blahblahblah help people when they need it etc

user41796
@durron597 Almost always is, depending upon the topic. :-) Take it with a grain of salt.

user114359
5:09 PM
Please tell me, why do you want a job cleaning movie theater floors?

and more just want to figure out if you'll steal money from the register or not, and if the answer to that is no, HIRE!

user15026
because I have no idea where else to take it other than "you would pay me"

user41796
@JimmyHoffa It's not one I ask in that fashion. But I usually have the last interview slot, and I can ask "based upon what you've heard today, what interests you and what would you be looking forward to working on?"

@psr - epic.

user15026
@durron597 I am generally an optimist, but since my life right now is convincing people who are hiring for things I am overskilled for that they should pay me to do them is making me less than awesome

5:10 PM
A few weeks ago we were talking about in this room about how the job search is like dating

I am sick, so perhaps crabbier than usual.

user41796
It's nuanced in that they've had 2 - 3 hours of exposure to what the team itself does, and I ask a more open ended question than the initial one presented

user15026
@durron597 I've had better luck dating.

user41796
@AshleyNunn first answer is probably better than "'cause you'll pay me." :-)

Think about what attracts you to another person on a personal level: Do you want to date someone who likes you, or someone who just doesn't want to be single anymore?

psr
5:11 PM
@Telastyn And practical advice for that (purely curiosity satisfying) workplace question too.

I don't care if they like me as long as they're great in bed. Ask the questions that matter.

@durron597: only maybe 10% of employers can play those kinds of games

user15026
@durron597 I think I am a bad person to discuss this, because for me it is entry level low paying menial labour jobs at the moment

@GlenH7 I think your interview style is crap - we've already discussed this :P I think you should trust them to decide whether they want the job or not, and you shouldn't be relying on personality indicators to decide whether you want to hire them or not - but capability. If they obviously know their shit then they'll do good work for you.

@AshleyNunn Yes, but you would still likely have a preference between Barnes & Noble or McDonalds

5:11 PM
(and aren't batshit crazy, or likely to steal my money, or...)

user15026
@durron597 This only works when you have the financial security to be selective.

@JimmyHoffa: you want to know capability, but of course you don't want to hire a douche

People don't become competent without practice working through adverse and difficult situations.

even if he's capable

user15026
@durron597 Preference? Maybe. Would I happily take either, if offered today? You bet your ass.

5:12 PM
@whatsisname IME these things are mutually exclusive

user15026
I have no safety net.

anyways, me and my orange juice are going to play some Pillars of Eternity.

they are, but you don't want any douchebags, capable or not'

@AshleyNunn So if your B&N interviewer asks you that question you can say "honestly, I just need the money. But I like books more than greasy deep fryers"

user15026
@Telastyn Let me know if the orange juice is any good at the game. :P

user114359
5:13 PM
@Telastyn please tell me you have some vodka in that orange juice

is kind of the point I'm staking out. All the shitty things people are afraid of - hinder people from becoming very skilled. So if you test for very skilled, those things won't be their in significant enough quantities to cause problems.

psr
@durron597 - The problem is that you are probably accidentally selecting for good BSers rather than people who actually want the job.

user15026
@durron597 that won't endear me to anyone.

@AshleyNunn You'd be surprised.

@durron597 NO! Everyone but Jimmy is delusional and stuck working for the man! WAKE UP SHEEPLE!

5:13 PM
sadly, the grey goose would be wasted on me in my current state.
@AshleyNunn - it's lending moral support.

there is also something, in that the good, skilled, non-asshole, capable people don't have to play the BS games to begin with because they are a hot commodity

user41796
@Telastyn Try CostCo's kirkland vodka, btw. A fraction of the price of GG; made at the same distillery as GG; and is actually cleaner than GG.

unless they're missing their degree.

user15026
@durron597 Sweetie, I am going to be blunt right now. I have very little money and very few prospects. This is not my first time on this merry go round. Even min wage stuff don't want to hear "this is the best of the worst" which is what you are effectively saying. Having said and done such, I know full well it does not get you a job.

then it's BS games all the way down.

user15026
5:15 PM
@whatsisname I...I don't even know how to respond to that

user15026
So I am going to go eat some toast and get my interview things together.

@whatsisname nonsense. Most of the industry is incapable of identifying them.

@AshleyNunn: I wasn't directing that towards you in particular
@JimmyHoffa: Most, yes, but not all

user41796
@AshleyNunn Keep breathing. Have hope that things will work themselves out.

user114359
He was talking about me

5:16 PM
"rockstars" and "ninjas" are a hot commodity because those are easier to identify than actually capable people - you can tell a rockstar by his soda and his swagger

user41796
@whatsisname I think the challenge is that she meets the criteria you're describing but is still struggling to land something meaningful.

user114359
I am so good at what I do, that my current job took one look at me and hired me without an interview. They gave me a Corvette and a trophy wife to drive home with.

psr
@AshleyNunn "I've always wanted to get into big, TARP causing financial scams. When I was a little girl I thought Dickens "A Christmas Carol" was a tragedy about Scrooge losing his mojo. I don't have the connections to get into wall street but I'm willing to work my way up and look forward to screwing just a few little guys at a time."

user114359
On the way home, I saved 49 orphans from a fire.

That whole notion that "The worthy have jobs while the unworthy are unemployed" is a fat lot of shit

user114359
5:18 PM
The unworthy are working at one of my previous employers, busy screwing over their customers.

@Ampt: It's not the whole truth, but there is a sliver of truth to it

I work with many, many people who barely barely offset the cost of the plants sitting on the cubicle tops recycling the air they breathe

though obviously "worthy" is not the right word to use

@whatsisname bullshit. You prove that all of the people unemployed are unworthy, or prove that all those employed deserve their jobs
Remember, almost half of the regulars in here have been unemployed at one point in the last 6 months
of which, I can think of none who are unworthy
perpetuating bad science does not good science make

key word: sliver

5:20 PM
well by that logic there's a sliver of truth in every statement
and we've proven nothing

people that are skilled typically have an easier time getting a new gig
and there are a lot of people that are perpetually unemployed for a reason
and while that is not true for everyone

@Ampt @whatsisname will be the first person to make a successful sundive

where is your reasoning for that first bit?

because people that are skilled and not assholes will through the course of their career meet other people that are also skilled and not assholes, and will make connections

I think we've fairly certainly proved to death that interviewing is more art than science

5:22 PM
as the old saying goes, it's not what you know, it's who you know

@whatsisname people who are not skilled and assholes will through the course of their career meet other people that are unskilled and assholes and make connections. You're saying that the bad can't help the bad get a job, which is untrue

and that is a reality of life

I posit that who you know has nothing to do with level of skill or assholeness
assholes probably know just as many, if not more, people than non-assholes

you will make more connections being a non-asshole than being an asshole
more successful connections
yes, some assholes have great success, but they are a slim minority

in what alternative reality?

5:24 PM
Ok, lets step back from the asshole bit for a second, I'll admit that it's probably best not to be an asshole
what about skill
how does having skill help you make more connections?
and where is evidence that that helps you get a job?
what about family of people with skills - they have the same, if not better, connections than those with skill
infact most of the people you know probably have no relation with their skill levels, but rather their connections to your circle
friends, friends of friends, etc

psr
@AshleyNunn - You probably already know, but the real answer is to find out where people getting <entry level job in question> go when they get promoted one or more times. That's what you are hoping for. Either your career has always been leading you that way (if that's plausible), or else <made up thing that made you realize that's a good career that suits you (met new friend, whatever)>.

you probably don't screen your friends list by skill level

psr
Part of what made you realize this is a good career is how it matches the following strengths and skills (segue into your pitch bullet points).

I do, although not intentionally, and so do other people

you must be a riot at parties
"Excuse me, what programming languages did you say you know?"
regardless, I think that in that case you may be the exception

5:26 PM
however, in addition to my circle of friends, I know a great deal of people at the various companies we've worked with
@Ampt: I didn't say I'm a complete jackass to people at "parties", but if I meet someone new, and perceive them to be totally unskilled at what they do, I am a lot less likely to seek that person out for further contact
whereas if I think they know what they are doing, I'm going to be more interested in that person
regardless what that skill area is

@whatsisname how do you know what their skill level is when you meet a friend of a friend at a bar?

user15026
@psr I am really not sure what you are saying :( (And I am anxious right now so I am just bad at parsing)

how are you assessing peoples skill level at all?!

and I think that's true for pretty much everyone

psr
@whatsisname I think on occasion that wonderful scenario actually comes to pass. But a lot of hot commodities are hot at least in part to do quality BS.

5:28 PM
Haven't we proven that even assessing peoples skills is a dicey proposition at best?

@Ampt: you ask them questions and they'll tell you about themselves

@whatsisname it's a sales pitch used to trip those emotional weaknesses for spreading idea germs. "Fairness" is a classic tool people use to trip those weaknesses to convince people of things without getting them to pay attention to the bigger picture.

its pretty easy to get people to blab about themselves endlessly

user15026
@GlenH7 I am trying, but right now I am kinda feeling super bad about things.

user15026
Hoping the walk to the interview and some good music will fix that

5:29 PM
@AshleyNunn deep breathes - remember than you are healthy and alive

@Ampt: that is why I said "perceive them to be"

that's like half of the pyramid in one go
@whatsisname you ought to write a whitepaper because you have solved a problem that almost every interviewer seems to get wrong

user15026
@Ampt Yep. Been a scary few weeks, but here I am, short hair (it's growing pretty fast) and wicked scars and I am awesome and it will be okay.

psr
@AshleyNunn Sorry. Trying to help. If you can't plausibly pitch that you really really want the current job, you might be able to pitch that you want that career, understand that this is entry level, and are excited to get started.

user15026
@psr ah, okay, that makes sense! That's actually a really great idea!

user41796
5:30 PM
@AshleyNunn I can relate to that level of reflection. Things definitely look different.

@AshleyNunn BAM! Then you're doing pretty damn well in the grand scheme of things

user15026
Thank you for that.

@Ampt: deciding whether I want to talk to someone at the bar for the next half hour has a much looser accuracy requirement than if I want to hire someone
or if I want to invite them to go on a bike ride

@whatsisname but you've already admitted that you're screening them based on skill...

user15026
@GlenH7 I mean I've done this 5 times now, but this is the first time I've been an adult recovering, so it's just really changed my outlook

5:31 PM
but don't deceive yourself that you don't behave similarly

user41796
@AshleyNunn Yep, I certainly understand where you're coming from on that one

user15026
@GlenH7 I thought you might.

@whatsisname I'm of the mindset that everyone is unique, with unique experiences, no less worthy than any other. Some make great fits for some jobs than others, because no two people are identical
And on top of that, having a wide view of a situation is better than having 5 who all see the exact same thing

user15026
@GlenH7 Pretty much this. I have a degree, I am really skilled and smart, I have a lot of experience, etc etc etc but here I am, applying to anything and everything including food service and retail just so I can make sure I can pay rent and feed me and my cat

@AshleyNunn: change your sales pitch about yourself to eliminate anything that starts with "I am"

user15026
5:34 PM
@whatsisname you are super not helping.

and those should be replaced with "I can do"

user41796
@AshleyNunn I can relate to that as well. Lady Luck doesn't always roll the dice in our favor every time. The trick is getting that first toe hold and continuing from there

@whatsisname does it not seem reasonable to presume the less capable and skilled will rely on people more, and spend more time cultivating and convincing people they're not assholes? Truthfully, I find cronyism is a much larger practice of jerkfaces than the alternative. So saying the good skilled worthwhile employees find employment easier because of people connections is I think, at best an inverse of the truth...

you are not trying to get hired to be something, you are trying to get hired to do something.

user15026
@GlenH7 yep, I kinda fell off the cliff three weeks ago, but damn it, I am tough and I am going to keep trying.

5:34 PM
@AshleyNunn I'm surprised you haven't muted him already... I tend to do that rather quickly, at least for a while
even Jimmy gets under my skin some days <.<

user15026
@Ampt I try really hard not to do that.

It's the things that you do that make you valuable to other people

user15026
Luckily I really do have to get myself together and leave soon.

user15026
@whatsisname No shit.

Eh, may be because of your shiny blue name. I tend to need to take a step back sometimes

user15026
5:35 PM
@Ampt I think I am too dang stubborn for my own good sometimes.

You're probably better at that than I am haha
Alright, well enjoy your walk there - it should be warmer than it was 3 months ago :)

user15026
In this case, a 30 min walk and some good music is going to help :)

user41796
@whatsisname I think that what you're trying to say is to shift presentation towards how you can solve the needs of the business that someone is applying to. Which is a constructive suggestion. OTOH, the nature of chat makes it difficult to convey that suggestion in an unloaded manner.

user15026
@Ampt Oh yes! Seems that while I was getting my brains futzed with, spring arrived, somewhat.

@GlenH7: yes

user41796
5:37 PM
@Ampt I generally don't mute. If someone is really getting under my skin than it likely means they need to be kicked from the room. Mute prevents me from seeing the kickable comment. :-)

user15026
@GlenH7 Also this :)

@JimmyHoffa: that is possible

there's enough diamonds and other room owners around here that aren't a part of the conversation

Once upon a pickle

that's high-level social skills turf though, and I don't think most people are able to intentionally swing that

5:38 PM
@JimmyHoffa no, otherwise by his logic he wouldn't have a jo.... oh....

@JimmyHoffa: well maybe i didn't make myself clear enough then

user41796
Alright, everyone take a breather - there's starting to be a bit too much misunderstanding of actual intent behind comments

@AshleyNunn I am willing to give you some tough love advice from a complete stranger right now if you're interested. But I understand you barely know me and you already have enough problems than someone giving gratuitous noodgey advice

and it's almost lunch time, but let me try to elaborate

user41796
We're venturing a little too close into name calling which isn't acceptable.

5:39 PM
@GlenH7 whatever meany-face!

@GlenH7 you're a footballbrain!

user114359
@Ampt you sock puppet!

@GlenH7 See now look what you started.

@Snowman At least I don't melt, Carrot nose!

user41796
@durron597 more tolerable than some of the earlier commentary

5:41 PM
@JimmyHoffa: hypothetical scenario time
Imagine that if you were to move to a new city, are looking for some new friends, and meet a bunch of new people at say a work party your first week.
if those people are mostly software types

user15026
@durron597 Honestly, that is the last thing I need at the current moment. I appreciate the attempt to help, today is just the really, really wrong time. Perhaps after my interview, when I am in a better (or at the very least, different) brain space.

@AshleyNunn I figured, that's why I prefaced instead of just saying it. Good luck on your interview!

I think that you are going to find more interesting, and have a greater desire for friendship, with the people that you perceive are more skilled
you will have greater respect for those skilled people

user15026
@durron597 hahahah and as I say that, interviewer is sicl

user15026
So I can go back to my pjs!

5:42 PM
than for people you think are just riding the train

user114359
@AshleyNunn maybe now is a good time to step away from the computer and get some fresh air. Let your mind wander a little bit and come back to your problems later so you do not stress too much.

@AshleyNunn no interview today?

user15026
@Snowman I think I am going to raid my change jar for $5 to get a sandwich from a local place and then go take myself to the park and visit my duck friends

do you not think that will happen?

@whatsisname nah, as a rule of thumb personally I qualify my friends based on other virtues which I prefer in my personal life. Kindness chief among them; I don't tend to get along well outside of work with particularly ambitious folk as I'm very laid back in my personal life. You are I think presuming others are much like you. You value those things perhaps though I don't particularly...

user15026
5:44 PM
@Ampt Nope, she's sick today, so we will reschedule.

user114359
@AshleyNunn be careful, last time I visited the duck pond they assaulted me. Apparently they are really used to people and their tendency to feed them.

user114359
Worse than my cats

user15026
@Snowman Ducks are okay, it's the Canada geese and the swans that are really mean.

@JimmyHoffa: well, assume everyone is similarly friendly

psr
@Snowman Probably the carrot nose.

user114359
5:45 PM
Actually you are right, I was thinking of geese.

@whatsisname but they're not.... :) I really don't care about people's ambitions or accomplishments, that doesn't tend to sway my opinion or desire to make friends with folks... it's just not how I'm wired. Not that it's a bad thing, it just doesn't sway me one way or another. That's different in a working context...

user15026
@psr That's a good theory :P

user15026
@Snowman Geese are mean!

@JimmyHoffa: you think you would be equally drawn to a person that was terrible at what they do, as someone who was good at what they do?
meh, we can continue this later if anyone cares later
its lunchtime for me

@Telastyn this isn't true at all, my company has people that work for it and are excited to work for it because of their backgrounds and specific interests. Many companies don't have this and it doesn't really matter, but it ABSOLUTELY matters for my company (and others)

Q: How to approach getting rid of geese from workplace?

enderlandI work for a location which has quite a few acres and around 2,000 employees. We recently built a new building, part of which was some nice landscaping, including a pond on the campus. Well, now we have a problem with these on the campus: In case you think they are pretty and cute, enough of ...

5:53 PM
consider me skeptical.

user15026
@enderland This reminds me of every spring on campus! We'd get geese like mad, and they'd put up all these signs being like "Don't go here, nesting goose, they will attack"

@enderland the thing is - you really don't know if they're lying about this or not. You just can't. All you know is either they're telling the truth, or they're really good liars.
which is why it's a pointless question in interviews

@JimmyHoffa there is a guy on my team currently who grew up working with the product my company makes and whose family still does - he has a strong personal interest in working with it, because he has that as his background

user114359
@enderland irony: you are a moderator on that site, but your question was closed as off-topic.

@Snowman I don't think it's off topic, but am not going to unilaterally vote to reopen it :P

user114359
5:59 PM
I would agree that the question is not off-topic, but the tone does sound off-topic. If I had the rep there I would not VTC that question.

@enderland you sure he isn't just doing what he knows how to do all the while pining to get the hell away from the family business? It's a pointless question in an interview. Tells you nothing worthwhile really.

it's off topic for most developers, who work in locations where their entire office is a small leased office space... which is unfortunately 90% of SE's audience :P
