Found a classic board game for @JimmyHoffa

Good day everyone. I have a question, but I'm not entirely sure where I should post it:

I've developed a VB.net application that can simply login to an SQL Database and Fetch records from it. It's actually just a simple Human resource Information System. However my Antivirus(Microsof Security Essentials) keeps on warning me that the .exe file my code produces is harmful and keeps on suggesting I send it to microsoft for further details. It's never done that before with my other projects, and I don't have automated processes in that program.

@MichaelT it appears as confusing as actual category theory...

user55340
@Malky.Kid Have you considered sending it to Microsoft?

2:02 AM
I did once. It keeps on bugging me about it.

user55340
What did they say?

@MichaelT they just sent him back a bunch of your mom jokes

Nothing yet..the thing is, I've never written anything that could harm the system.

@JimmyHoffa Ha!

user55340

it's just your standard basic insert, update and delete.
Nothing too complicated.

But everytime I compile, Security Essentials Fires off
saying that the file COULD be harmful.

2:05 AM
maybe you've been sleep coding trojans for a newsgroup out of jakarta

sleep coding?
is my computer hacked?

user55340
You really need to contact MS to see why its triggering...

thing is, I want to sound cool and all, but I can't for the life of me program trojans or viruses or stuff like that. I don't know how to yet

most likely you have a security policy update come down that set unsigned .NET code to be either untrusted, or you are unwittingly using some higher-security features than you realized. Or perhaps you're trying to run it from an under-privileged user

is the fact that I'm still using a 2005 version relevant?

user55340
2:08 AM
(I'm amused at the Tom Vasel review claiming its the weakest of Sid's games - while others consider it to be a strong game...)

2005 visual studio I mean? (liscenced)
*licensed
so what's next, I contact Microsoft Immediately?
yeah. Maybe that's what I'll do. Thanks so much

The Overwhelmingly Large Telescope (OWL) was a conceptual design by the European Southern Observatory (ESO) organization for an extremely large telescope, which was intended to have a single aperture of 100 meters in diameter. Because of the complexity and cost of building a telescope of this unprecedented size, ESO has elected to focus on the 39-meter diameter European Extremely Large Telescope instead. While the original 100-m design would not exceed the angular resolving power of interferometric telescopes, it would have exceptional light-gathering and imaging capacity which would greatly increase...

How in the hell can you expect to build a system in VB.NET if you don't even know the syntax? — Robert Harvey ♦ 8 mins ago

3 hours later…
8:58 AM
good morning!

2 hours later…
12:14 PM
We should get one double-downvote a day... for those extra special questions.

2 hours later…
1:54 PM
@MetaFight make a M.SE request!
I'd vote for that

user41796
@Ampt A regular vote or a double-down vote? ;-)

@GlenH7 I'd double down on that vote, if you catch my drift

user41796
That's what I was trying to clarify... :-)

Also, I know we usually don't talk hardware, but how many radiators do you think it would take to cool a relatively high performance PC passively

user41796
<speculating> Offhand, I would think there is a point where passive cooling simple won't work. At some point, the rate of thermal conductance will be slower than the rate of heat generated. Material choice and fin design will have an impact on that.

1:58 PM
@Ampt that depends on so many details that only somebody that has tried to cool exactly your CPU in exactly your environment might be able give a good estimate

user41796
@Christoph Well, that's partially true

Well, I could theoretically install 4x480mm + 2x360mm + 1x140mm radiator all in the same case

user41796
We ought to be able to find the rate of heat output from the CPU. And we ought to be able to find the dissipative rate of various coolers

sorry, that should read 2x480mm
140Watts is pretty typical for CPU max output
TDP as it were

user41796
So bust out your thermo calculations and you should be able to swag an answer

2:01 PM
@Ampt really nothing important, just a state msg

ok, so lets see here... passive dissipation rate for a 480mm radiator

@GlenH7 just take power consumption

I mean as the temperature rises, you're going to get better thermal transfer from the radiator to the air...
I'm just not sure where 600 watts is on that scale, and whether it's within the tolerances of the parts generating the heat

but you still need air circulation otherwise the system saturates

user41796
@ratchetfreak Good point as I'm sure you can use the crude assumption that all power is converted to heat.

2:06 PM
@GlenH7 most is anyway
compared to the heat the energy in the electrical signals going out is tiny

everything that doesn't go into the CPU's I/O is dissipated as heat

so a 360mm radiator of the same make and model (just 1 fan shorter) can dissipate 315 watts and have a deltaT of 10C

user41796
Ratchet's point about air circulation is important. Most cases have minimal air flow without some sort of assistance. And adding all those radiators eats up a lot of space available within the case.

and bad design can create warm pockets

getting the heat away from the CPU is the main problem, that's why heat pipes are so popular

2:09 PM
@Christoph its water cooled, so getting it from A to B is already taken care of

but you still need to get it away from B

user41796
You already have a water cooling system on there? And now you're just trying to cool off the water?

@Ampt oooh I see - I B outside of the PC case?

@GlenH7 yep. use a pump to get it around the system, but I think it would be cool to have no fans on top of it
likely I'll have 4 fans on one of the 480mm radiators that are hidden
for backup
but I'm interested to see if having a stupid amount of radiators can do the trick

user41796
Okay, that's definitely workable

user41796
2:12 PM
short answer - yes

I'd also vote yes

user41796
string them along the heat pipes and you'll be g2g.

user41796
My main worry from before was the small surface area of the cpu and the rate of heat dissipation away from that small area. I don't think a pure passive solution could work for that

yeah. I want to watercool the CPU + GPUs. maybe the ram and the motherboard but those usually do fine passively on their own.

can you assemble then as you like, i.e. in series, parallel, above or besides each other?

2:13 PM
@Christoph however I want.

user41796
but since you've already moved the heat off of the cpu, you have a lot more surface area to attach radiators to

then use an aquarium

For reference, I bought this case
and when I say 480mm radiator
I mean this
I can easily get 2 of those in there

@Ampt where are the connections and what do you mean by "in there"?
can't load the case picture btw

user41796
@Ampt How are you getting outside air into the case?

2:16 PM
why not a fountain that does the cooling?

@GlenH7 Case is mostly mesh on the top and bottom. One would go on the top, which I'm hoping would do most of the work
@ratchetfreak fountain+computer = bad times, plus I want dead silence
@Christoph Try this?

you could still make a heat exchanger and isolate the fountain from the cooling water

user41796
@Ampt I think you're going to have problems without some sort of powered air flow to draw in outside air

@GlenH7 gah.. yeah... I was hoping that wouldn't be the case but you're probably right

user41796
I could certainly be wrong - the safe thing to do would be to setup a thermal shutdown event on the mobo.

2:18 PM
@GlenH7 unless he relies on the power supply for the last push

thats already built into most computers
but realistically the 4 backup fans would kick on long before that happened

user41796
Why not swap out one or two of those fans for super quiet ones and not worry about it?

unless they ceased up from non use

oh they would likely be <1k rpm silent fans

user41796
Ought to be okay then.

2:19 PM
and at 120mm, fans are actually pretty quiet all around
but the claim of passive cooling would be pretty awesome

user41796
You've got a backup system in place, so it's not like you're going to cook your equipment

If I wanted to build a passive cooler for the water, I'd use an external radiator that is flat, upright, and has the water flowing from top to bottom, in order to generate natural convection

also isn't the water pump going to make noise?

@ratchetfreak it's pretty much silent
already own that one
you can't tell its on unless you get your ear within 3-4"

but having a pump makes it active - it pumps a fluid, just as the fans would. from a thermodynamic perspective it's the same

2:21 PM
@Ampt unless one of the pipes has an eigenfrequency of the pump RPM

@Christoph ok, passive in the sense that it has no fans, not in the fact that there is no active movement
s/passive/fanless/g
did I do that right @JimmyHoffa?
@ratchetfreak then it will be cut shorter
or made longer

user41796
His sed is weak, youngling. But yes, you got that right.

or thrown out completely

Maybe a chimney effect cooler....I'll sketch something

user41796
The biggest question, @Ampt, is if this project has approval from your advisory board.

2:23 PM
@GlenH7 .....the less she knows, the better.
but realistically she's on board. I own most of the stuff required, and I plan on taking my time with the build and spreading it out over the winter, upgrading stuff as it comes in

user41796
Good idea to keep individual purchases below your approval amount. It's amazing what you can build up with lots of little purchase orders.

That's the plan!

user41796
Is this going to be used as an HTPC or is this a gaming rig? Or both?

although I think the graphics cards are going to have to get approval... each is over the approval amount and I kind of have my eyes set on 3
gaming rig
ideally 3x1440p monitors

user41796
Because the other option with an HTPC is to simply get a louder sound system. :-)

user55340
2:27 PM
@GlenH7 Back in the day at the UW Madison, you couldn't buy a computer over some small limit or it would be a capital expenditure (which had lots of paperwork). Some people were able to get around this by buying parts and building the computer instead.

user55340
One was even able to build a vax cobbled together from used parts... though that took awhile.

user41796
@MichaelT It's a time honored technique if you can't sneak the approval through the secretary when the boss is out.

@GlenH7 I'll be sleeping <10 feet from the computer

user41796
And I don't think that @Ampt's advisory board has an assistant with signatory authority.

user55340
btw... ever notice Radar in M*A*S*H and what he does in background images?

user41796
2:28 PM
stamp papers?

user41796
@Ampt You could always turn it off at night when you sleep...

@GlenH7 where's the fun in that?

user55340
(looking for actual image / footage)

It's been a long time since I've caught M*A*S*H on the air

user55340
hmm... can't find it quickly... he's got jeep parts. He's dismantled one and is sending it home piece by piece.

2:32 PM
I'm not sure I ever caught that... into TVTropes we go!

user55340

@Ampt see you next week

user55340
> He also won over $800 in poker playing with members of MASH and dismantled a jeep and smuggled it home piece by piece.

@Ampt go for a selfmade cooler - build the following and tell me if it set your house on fire:

user55340
Apparently, its a first season thing.

2:34 PM
Please tell me you drew that

@Ampt what if I did/what if not?

@Christoph It's pretty genius. LED strips and all

user41796
14 mins ago, by Christoph
Maybe a chimney effect cooler....I'll sketch something

I have the sheet right here in front of me, I can take another picture from any perspective you like

Haha oh no, I believe it
it is an interesting idea though
I will say that

user41796
2:38 PM
@Ampt It's just an inverted wort chiller

user55340
Found the script bit that actually mentions it in Dead Dad.

I think if I went external though, I would want to "Reuse" the heat

the main thing you want is some geometry that "supports" natural convection, and counter-flow is generally a good idea to get low temperature difference between the fluids

@GlenH7 pretty much, yeah

but the heat transfer to the chimney from the water needs to be big enough

2:38 PM
mainly by blowing it on my feet all winter

user55340
> ## [ Big Band ] How far had Radar O'Reilly gotten in my last letter to you? I think, if I'm not mistaken, he had mailed the backseats by then.
This week he's smuggling out the front seats.
It took Trapper and me a while to figure out what he was up to until we did a fluoroscope of one of his packages and found out he was mailing a jeep home, piece by piece.
- What's in the box? - Toys for the orphans, sir.
- Oh.
Let me give you a hand.
- Would you, please, sir? [ Hawkeye ] Radar's not the first guy to do this, of course.

Had to look up wort chiller - yes the idea is the same, but there should be some structure supporting the pipes as they are otherwise unprotected/unsupported
I can most probably find a paper with correlations for those in natural convection

user55340
Btw, do we have a still and mash conversation going on concurrently without intertwining?

Nah, I think this is all the info I needed
@MichaelT also yes
We can multi-task!

user55340
You're going to make a still in your cube and send a segway home piece by piece?

2:42 PM
@MichaelT if I had a jeep to mail home I totally would

user41796
The more I read about setting up a still the less enthused I got.

as for the still, it's not a bad idea but I'm worried about my cubemate
he's a real stickler for the rules

user41796
You have to monitor the output carefully and throw out the first portion and the tailings.

yeah the heads and the tails
don't want those

user55340
@Ampt is his name Frank?

2:45 PM
@MichaelT yeah but we call him Ferret Face.

user15026
@MichaelT checks what room she is in

@AshleyNunn the one with beer and monads
duh.

user55340
/me suppresses the urge to call @AshleyNunn "Hot Lips"

user15026
@Ampt Oh, right. :) I am lacking in beer

@AshleyNunn and/also thermodynamics and emergency surgery, apparently

user41796
2:47 PM
I wonder if there are chip based sensors or similar that can detect methanol levels...

@GlenH7 They do make continuous stills, somehow

user15026
@MichaelT laughs Whatever works :P (I got all of MASH for my birthday so I am rewatching it for the nth time)

I've no idea how they work

@AshleyNunn where N is defined as the limit as x->0 of 1/x right?

user55340

user15026
@Ampt Possibly?

@AshleyNunn (It means that N === infinity)
I've seen that show more times than I know between watching it with my dad when I was little and catching the reruns after school
I love that you can always tell what episode it is from the opening scene

user55340
One of my friends in college bought the entire show on DVD back awhile ago... it had the feature of an audio channel that removed the laugh track at which point it became a very different show.

user41796
@MichaelT I'm thinking I need to work on my mad scientist skills and come up with an inline methanol detector so you know what portions of the heads and tails to dump when running a still.

@GlenH7 IT would be cool if you could somehow seperate them out in real time
@MichaelT that would be morbid.

2:51 PM
@Ampt damn this chimney is distracting from my actual work now

user55340
M*A*S*H is an American television series developed by Larry Gelbart, adapted from the 1970 feature film MASH (which was itself based on the 1968 novel MASH: A Novel About Three Army Doctors, by Richard Hooker). The series, which was produced in association with 20th Century Fox Television for CBS, follows a team of doctors and support staff stationed at the "4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital" in Uijeongbu, South Korea during the Korean War. The show's title sequence features an instrumental version of "Suicide Is Painless", the theme song from the original film. The show was created after an...

user55340
Go to the laugh track section.

user15026
@MichaelT Yeah, my dvd set does the same, and that changes the show so much

@MichaelT Yeah I know they never wanted it, but it kept it lighthearted

user41796
@Ampt What I'm thinking is a simple red / green sensor to track the head. Once the methanol drops below a certain level then the light turns green and you know to start collecting the output instead of trashing it.

2:52 PM
As much as I think Alan Alda is a genius, I may have to disagree with him here
@Christoph Would it be able to dissipate 1200 watts if I wanted? I think that would me the max I would ever ask out of it

user55340
btw, xkcd today is another funky one.

That feeling you get when the things you want to buy aren't available on amazon prime...

user55340

does it randomly switch scrolling direction for anyone else?

it zooms into you mouse position
and eats memory like crazy

3:01 PM
after like 3 scrolls in one direction, that direction would then scroll out
and vice versa

it's supposed to be a fractal like zoom

@Ampt I can not answer that without going deeper into the correlations and at least making some simulations
@Ampt do you have any idea of the water mass flow rate, or volume flow rate (liters per second, something like that) in your system?

user41796
@Christoph I think you've been sniped by this problem of his.

user41796
Which isn't a bad thing, just pointing it out

@GlenH7 that's absolutely true, but I can't restrain myself (is that how you say it? I'm not a native...) because thermodynamics is my profession

3:16 PM
@Christoph I'll do you one better and tell you exactly which pump I'm using

yay!

will that get you what you need?

that's not in SI units but I'll make do ;)

haha sorry!

Lpm (Liters/minute) is SI

3:20 PM
Lpm is not the problem, mH20 and PSI are

You can just use the 100% curve. I'd likely be running it full blast
it's really that quiet

just plug in the hydrostatic pressure of 1 meter of water for the mH2O

@ratchetfreak I know how it's done, I was just nitpicking

If you need more pressure, I could be convinced to double up on the pumps

3:24 PM
I seriously doubt that pressure drop is the main problem

Hahaha I know, but it would give me an excuse to double my pumps
granted, you're not the only thing dropping the pressure here. 3 waterblocks would also be in the loop, but they shouldn't affect the pressure terribly

@Ampt making a new gaming machine?

@JimmyHoffa Slowly but surely, yes.
at the moment it's just a new case + new fittings and tubing
the old GTX 570 is still doing it's job and chugging along
but I'll likely put a new radiator+gfx card w/ waterblock on the list eventually

@Ampt did you grab any halo from the steam sale the other week?

Sadly no. There was only one on there
and... well... I'm a little gun shy ever since I bought Halo ODST and Halo Reach back to back
talk about DLC turned full blown game...

3:33 PM
heh

I bought them both. for 60 bucks a piece. (That's a lie, I got the limited edition of ODST for 80)

haha

Plus they killed the multiplayer by trying to make it like COD
where are the static weapon spawns? Where are the timing pushes to get key areas

yeah the multi was kind of the whole point of the halo games I thought...

It was, then they seriously screwed it up
CoD was about getting better guns through experience and starting with them
but truth be told they were all pretty damn even. you could get killed with the lowest gun when you had the best pretty easily

user55340
3:35 PM

with Halo it was all about controlling key areas of the map to get the power weapons. When you spawn with them, there's no longer a point to it

@MichaelT you bought the book?

user55340
@JimmyHoffa nope... just an imgur / reddit link I found.

it's not even a part of the MLG pro tour any more. It's just a real shame

For awhile, /r/xkcd was in the hands of people with not-the-norm (and way outside accepted) political beliefs which basically shut down the activity of the subreddit. One guy was able to get in to that group wait until the mod didn't do his 2 month activity mail and then steal the subreddit back and kick everyone out of the mod team and put back in a sensible team.

@Ampt well, because a friend suggested I read things.

@GlenH7 This is a thing I have also discoverd

@Ampt forget about that chimney cooler unless you just need a new LED lamp

4:01 PM
@Christoph So... not gonna handle 1200 watts?

user15026
Tumblr is similar with single subject things.

How much could it handle?
@AshleyNunn or, better yet, reddit.com/r/thestopgirl

@Ampt or overspeced?

if the water temperature is limited to 40 °C (20 K above ambient), height 0.5 m and diameter 0.3 m, it can probably do something like 100 W

4:03 PM
(yes, that is SFW)

@Christoph I would be willing to let it hit 65C if that would help our thermal conductance.... above that would be less desireable

and if there was more efficient temperature exchange with the inside of the chimney?
with fins and such

user15026
@Ampt People are weird.

@AshleyNunn how many links did it take to convince you?

@ratchetfreak they will have a positive effect compared to no fins, but it's hard to find correlations for that. I might have a closer look when I'm bored by my real work again, though

4:05 PM
Thanks for the help @Christoph
:)

user15026
@Ampt one

I mean water radiators for heating a room have fins

@AshleyNunn I mean convince you that they were all the same?
hahaha

so it would be obvious that adding them would help

hence my original idea of using radiators with tons of fins :)

user15026

Q: How does David Lightman in WarGames manage to hack a computer by dialing a number?

BenjaminJBHis setup seems to be a telephone connected to a computer. When he dials another computer on the phone, he manages to gain access to it remotely. Is this a realistic situation or just something done for effect? This video shows the technique but not the actual access being gained, as it is w...

Q: Guess girl number

gregszewskiwould You help me get girl number ? She said that her number sums is equal 42 . So it is like 9 digits 0-9 each 0-9 0-9 0-9 0-9 0-9 0-9 0-9 0-9 0-9 so number 666666600 = 42 so this could be her number . What I need is a code to generate all possible nine digits number which sum is 42 . Thanks ...

I flagged it for nuking.

They're relatively rural in a river valley so there wasn't a lot of options. Now they have high speed over microwave relay off a neighbour's silo. It works decently well.

At this rate, I'm going to burn through my close votes in the next 10 minutes.

I feel bad that I am so useless to you guys :(

@AshleyNunn One day you'll bring cupcakes. And all will be forgiven.

user55340
@AshleyNunn You could answer a question or two and we could dump 3k of bounty on it... though that would probably raise a few eyebrows.

user55340
Between Robert, Glen, and myself... I'm fairly sure we could spare 1k each.

(I'm not serious about that... as I said, I think it would raise too many eyebrows)

user41796
@MichaelT Just think of the "promotions by bounty" that Robert could do over on SO...

.... what is this? — enderland 5 secs ago

Y'know, it's interesting that I got so much pushback for my "Don't use EDIT in your posts" question on Meta. When it got closed, I just deleted it and went back to editing EDIT out of people's posts. Nobody has ever complained about that, not even once.

user15026
@enderland Oh yes I never considered that :P

user15026
@enderland We may never know.

@RobertHarvey I dropped an <!-- EDIT Just for Robert Harvey --> comment in an answer I revised the other day.
