Q: back end development clarification

user3344617I am a front end developer and looking to get into back end development and I have some questions on the foundation of how it all works, so please bear with me and my "noob" expressions. I have heard a lot about the back-end being a stack of server application and database. Is this the same as...

The first part of his question is sort of almost answerable.

It's currently unclear, but if he gets more specific about faster, it's probably opinion based. But it's kind of on the border there.

@MichealIT with regards to the influencial, knots uniting discussion, I have a follow up.
I am eyeing on either C# or Python. In terms of career stability (I am into Fin Tech), which one would be a better pick? I won't hold you accountable ;-)

Does anybody have a suggestion on what programs I could create in Java/Swing. I'm not interested in networking, nor mathematical algorithms etcetera, I'm not too skilled in the language, but capable to build a working application.

@HarryKitchener how about a simple game like minesweeper, for starters? Are you trying to learn something specific, or do you just want a project to hack on for fun?

5:13 PM
@HarryKitchener in your question you say you would be interested in doing something local business could use, maybe some kind of inventory listing and stock organisation could be something on that line. (especially if you can make it run on some mobile device)

@thorstenmüller I like the idea, is there any way I could get Java running on an android or ios without the development kit
@amon ] Nothing specific, no.

6:11 PM
@HarryKitchener sorry, no idea. We outsource app development all the time, so not exactly a core competence of mine. But the SDK is free anyway as far as I know, so this shouldn't stop you.

6:46 PM
@HarryKitchener classic easy to implement business use app is an employee time tracking app, you have to handle multiple users that can clock in and out as they show up and leave and it'll show someone how much time was spent at work the last couple weeks for each user with start and stop times. It's a small version of most LOB apps: you have UI, data storage, and reporting.

@HarryKitchener Java on Android should be considered a separate language in many senses from Java SE.

user20683
It's like Objective C for OS X vs Objective C for iOS. Similar yes, but different enough to require adaptation.

user20683
Java has a couple of solutions for running on iOS but I'd save yourself the trouble and just learn Obj-C /Coca instead.

@bonCodigo Neither being my choice languages, and (Fin = Finance?) isn't my realm of expertise. I'd guess that C# might be better because of the big name company showing up in the technologies used... but more than that, I can only guess.

A: Allow moderators to reply to a flag

LauraWe've (by "we" I mean "Jarrod") officially added this functionality to the UI, pretty much exactly the way Manishearth and Ilmari Karonen envisioned it. Note that the user still is not notified of the results of a flag they cast, so they won't see this feedback unless they go looking for it. For ...

@JimmyHoffa I like that idea, I may follow it up. Thanks.
