@Rachel 38 answers, 3rd highest voted just a link. Went quickly through it, some of the answers will be deleted if the question is migrated here, as it would be a "new" question, and quality standards apply (they always do, but a bit more rigorously on new questions). I would hate answers to disappear just for us to get a good question over from SO.
and +215? its way outside our normal scores (excluding the good old days). The OP, if not a Programmers member, will be a 1075 rep user just because of the migration. Do we want a user who never stepped foot here to get the associated privileges? And would the OP be ok with losing 1075 rep from his SO account?
I know 1075 is off (just an example to prove a point). It's a cw post, only votes before becoming CW will count
Not to mention that there is probably a duplicate... Do we close the P.SE question as dupe, or the SO one?
@ThomasOwens Hey, feeling better?

2:32 AM
@Rachel Taking off my mod hat, I love the question and I want it here. Mod hat back on: The logistics are problematic, what do you say we just ask it here? (assuming not a duplicate)

@YannisRizos Very much, thanks.
Although a sick day from work means massive catch up on assignments.

Q: Understanding Loose / Tight Coupling in the "Real World"

Oscar GodsonI wont say what "community" because I want a non-biased explanation, but let's say you're building a reusable module and that module requires 3+ dependent modules and removing 1 of them causes a breaking error not only in your app as a whole which uses this module, but the module itself. From my...

@YannisRizos grab it and abscond to here

user20683
Should I flag it?

Looks like a good question for us. If you have 3k on SO and you agree with me, vote/flag to migrate it here. Please don't flag it for moderation attention, no need for that, I can ping the SO mods to sent it over. It would help if it had a couple of migration votes, to show that the community wants the question, not just a mod.

@WorldEngineer Yeah, I'm at 779... lots of reasons...

@YannisRizos Programmers is more fun and SO questions have this way of being kind of...shallow

it's like "problem done" moving on...

@WorldEngineer Too much trolling / spam / haxors. At some point SO started feeling weirdly similar to IRC...
@WorldEngineer Now that I think of it, you should flag it as off topic / belongs on P.SE, those flags are also visible to 10K users, they can vote to migrate it here.

Q: What's all this about heroic edits?

Mark TrappI've heard there's a way to get questions reopened by doing something called a heroic edit. What is it, how can I do it properly, and how does it help?

5:39 AM
@MarkTrapp Good Morning Mark. I got more response after the edit. Thanks.

user20683
@Karthik Good answers are achieved recursively or iteratively. It doesn't really matter which.

user2334
@Karthik Great to hear!

5:54 AM
@WorldEngineer Without giving more clarity to the question, additional response cannot be expected. I agree that refining the question or the answer over a period of time has it's fruitful results.

Hi all, and mighty moderators, I was browsing the tags and I found the following ones: "mvc", "asp.net-mvc", "asp.net-mvc3", and "mvc3". There was only one question (6 February) tagged as "mvc3", so I edited the post, removed this tag and put "asp.net-mvc3" instead. However the "mvc3" tag did not disappear, is there a cache of some sort, so I still see the tag, or do moderators have to explicitly delete it ?

user2334
@Jalayn Unused tags drop away after 24 hours. When did you remove the tag?

@MarkTrapp just now. Thanks for the info.

user2334
No problem: tag pruning is a daily job, so it might even be sooner

Also, don't you think that "mvc3" should be merged into "asp.net-mvc3"? Is there a way I can propose a merge ? After carefully reading the "structured tag cleanup" post on meta, I noticed "Why can't it be handled by a tag merge/rename?" so I did not add a specific post on that tag.

user2334
@Jalayn Merging is just a bulk retag: if you've already removed the tag from the only question that had it, there's nothing to do

Is it a good place to ask question about Agile Methodology ?

@0x8badf00d Yes, but make sure it hasn't been asked before
@0x8badf00d And since you are pretty active on Stack Overflow: normal question guidelines apply here as well.

@YannisRizos Ok

user2334
@0x8badf00d While it's on-topic here, you might have better luck on Project Management.SE

@MarkTrapp This is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks a lot.

user2334
No problem!

11:41 AM
While I am here, let me ask you guys this question about Agile methodology which most of you might be familiar with or have working experience in. Here is the question:...
we write up tasks on the board with estimated time to complete. Some bugs takes longer than usual to fix. Some take lot longer that hours cant be estimated, for example - memory related issues in C or C++ , in Objective-C especially.

@0x8badf00d And the question is?

How to deal such scenarios ? Product owner doesn't see any features getting done while this time being spent in fixing defects.
And since the sprint is usually two weeks, and scrum master with no technical knowledge.. he might not understand and try to blame us for not finishing up the task or not giving better estimates.
We are all new to Agile ( our team is)

@0x8badf00d So the question is more along the lines of "How to explain bug fixing estimates to a non technical scrum master"?

@YannisRizos Yes

Well, then, that's a good question :)
One that I can't help you with, because luckily our scrum master is a developer
And it might be a good question for both sites, Programmers.SE and Project Management.SE, here you'll get answers from the developer's perspective and there from the manager's perspective (most likely).
Try asking it on one site, evaluate the response and then ask it on the other. Make sure you tailor the question to the site, don't just copy paste

11:57 AM
Ok, Thanks for all your help.

@YannisRizos The one you posted yesterday :)

@Rachel Oh, where is my mind :)
But why flag it when you can vote to migrate? you are at 19K rep on SO

@YannisRizos I did both :) I just know it's hard to get 5 close/migrate votes on SO since the questions change so fast
Wow 19k... I remember being excited to get 10k rep on programmers and at the time I had 3k on so

Don't worry about that, we won't have to wait until it gets to 5 migration votes :) In a couple of days, if it's not here, I'll nag the SO mods to send it over.

Speaking of, I have a question on SO that never got a good response. What do you guys think?

Q: Separation of Concerns when adding new types

Steve JacksonI have a system I've been working on this week where I'm having a hard time balancing separation of concerns with easy extensibility. I'm adding new types to the system, and it feels like shotgun surgery. The basic idea is that data is collected (polled) from a remote system and then made avail...

1:03 PM
@SteveJackson Since design pattern questions are allowed here, I voted to move it here

@Rachel Thanks :) It seems like an OK fit to me.

@YannisRizos If you're OK w/ the question being moved here, I'll flag it for a mod :)

@Rachel No don't.
I'm about to, let me play the P.SE mod card here :)

@YannisRizos alright :)

@YannisRizos @Rachel Hi

geminiCoderI know you can program android on Windows iOS and Linux. But which operating system is considered the standard (used by google) for android programming?

Argh!
Leaving a constructive comment to this one is beyond me. Help!

@YannisRizos Looks google is in trouble. Hope they don't sue this poor guy
Comment: Android itself is a operating system
@YannisRizos Hope the :( is not intended at me

@Ubermensch It was directed at your message, but intended for the fact that I'm still at work :P

@YannisRizos Just kidding. Hope you are sad with work not with me
@Rachel You seemed to have claimed a blog to write. And if you hate writing I believe it must be :(
Can anybody suggest having multiple chatrooms in a single window

@Ubermensch In a single browser window?

Yes

@Ubermensch Not that I know of, however I have a list of "other rooms you're in" below the list of users in this room
And it tells me if there are updates in those rooms
@Ubermensch Yes, I wanted to try and write so took a post, although if I don't have the time for it I will drop it

1:35 PM
@Rachel Sorry! I got it wrong. I misinterpreted the message in the sidebar

You can also switch which room is displayed in your browser by clicking the link on the sidebar

But still I got to click the link to go to the other chat window

@Ubermensch yes, you do. But it will at least show you activity there. Of course, you can always open each chat in a new tab too

4:43 PM
Where's the "close because the question is too stupid to bother answering" option....

user20683
@Rachel I think that's the "Not a Real Question"

user20683
Real Questions are intelligent or at least use double precision.

It is a real question though, it's just not the sort of question that should be asked on SO because the answer is to basically know what you're trying to do instead of copying/pasting code. SO is not a replacement for basic research skills.
It's like asking why alert(some string with no quotes); doesn't work in javascript

user20683
@Rachel Because you're trying to print the unprintable (disclaimer: I don't know Javascript)

@WorldEngineer I used that example because it should be understood by most programmers. lol I just get fed up with people using SO as a replacement for learning
they just ask a question, and copy/paste the answer, without ever really understanding what they're doing. Then they come back and ask more questions because they got a copy/paste answer so easily

4:51 PM
@Rachel (one of the many reasons I'm closing questions quickly - don't want us to turn to SO)
@Rachel In some sites they have a "general reference" close reason for stuff that are answerable by just reading the wikipedia article. but "not a real question" is our equivalent.

@YannisRizos Oh this was a SO question, not P.SE. I just posted here because this is the chat I hang out in, not SO. They don't have a general reference close option either though

@Rachel Got that, meant NARQ is ours and SO equivalent...

@YannisRizos Alright, thanks :) That was more of a rant then a real question anyways

@Rachel That would be "not constructive" then :P

Q: Mediator Vs Observer

Gullible ProgrammerI have been reading the "Gang Of Four", in order to solve some of my problems and came across the "Mediator" pattern. I had earlier used "Observer" in my projects for making some GUI application. I am a bit confused as I do not find great difference between the two. I browsed to find the differ...

Would that be a better fit for our site?
I've actually wondered the same thing in the past

5:01 PM
@Rachel I think it's a bit not constructive, ideally it should present a given problem and ask which pattern would fit best

user20683
@YannisRizos I flagged it but we can always edit the thing.

@YannisRizos I'd disagree, because often I will want to know in what sort of situations I would want to use a Mediator and when I want to use an Observer

@WorldEngineer Hmmm... We can always re-ask it here, is there a point in migrating an question that needs editing? We will be invalidating some of the answers.

Quite often when I want to get a summary of two similar objects, I'll google ObjectA vs ObjectB
and the results usually give me the answer to my question

user20683
We really ought to do a blog "basic research for programmers"

5:05 PM
@WorldEngineer can you post article suggestions? If not I'll post it for you

user20683
@Rachel on it

@WorldEngineer This is a great idea. I love being able to close a question and throw a comment on the question with a general reference link that might actually help the asker.

@Rachel That's irrelevant, interesting (or not) has little to do with whether a question fits on the Q&A format of the site.
(unfortunately)

@YannisRizos Are you saying that asking the difference between two design patterns is not acceptable on this site?
because I was going to re-post that as a question, but I would rather have it moved then re-post a duplicate

@Rachel Oh no, I'm saying that "pattern1 vs pattern2" is not acceptable. Asking which one to use in a given situation is perfectly acceptable.
"You should only ask practical, answerable questions based on actual problems that you face. Chatty, open-ended questions diminish the usefulness of our site and push other questions off the front page."

5:08 PM
@YannisRizos Yes I understand that, but I believe there is a single answer for the difference between an Observer and a Mediator
and what would be a more useful question title for future visitors: What pattern should I use for this design, or Observer vs Mediator?
Also, what would provide more useful answers? An answer to a specific situation, or an answer that outlines the difference between two patterns and when to use one over the other?

misread that

@YannisRizos :) Trying to convince you to see my point of view, thats all. I'll understand if you disagree, although I won't understand why

@Rachel There isn't a great answer to this vs that questions, especially when it comes to design patterns. Closely related design patterns can apply to a wide range of situations, depending on an even wider range of factors.
It's always a judgement call with design patterns...
So, ten questions on ten different situations would be more useful than a generic this vs that or a single question on a specific situation.

@YannisRizos Alright. I'm interested in an canonical answer to the question on the differences between an observer or mediator. Can we migrate the SO question that asks that to P.SE, or should I make a duplicate question and ask it myself?
The question isn't "give me a list of when to use pattern A and pattern B", it's "whats the difference between pattern A and pattern B, and when should I use one over the other"

@Rachel I will not hassle the SO mods to migrate the SO question, and I can't make any promises if you post your own question :)

5:17 PM
There's a difference. One is asking for a list of situations. The other is asking for differences, and the key differences which would affect your decision of using A or B
@YannisRizos Is it really that much of a harrassment if a mod from another site asks you to move a question to their site?
There's no judgement call to make, there's simply an action to perform

@Rachel Yes, because I don't think the SO question is good for us. And "harass" was used lightly, although they do have only 12 mods for 1*10^6 users... So I'd prefer to not bother them if I'm not absolutely certain.

@YannisRizos Ok, I can understand not wanting to ask for that reason :)
Just don't tell me it's because you don't want to harrass the mods
(PS I'm bring up questions I find interesting and think would fit our site better than SO because I know other sites do it. Background can be found in this meta question: meta.programmers.stackexchange.com/a/3085/1130)

@Rachel I know, and I really like your initiative, don't mistake my reluctance on any particular question as anything more than that...

@YannisRizos Just don't want you getting mad if I keep asking about migrating questions to P.SE
:)

@Rachel Actually I was hoping more people would get involved. I had a discussion with Anna Lear at some point when she was moderating both sites, and she did identify a problem with SOpedians preferring to keep good P.SE questions instead of sending them over here.

user20683
5:24 PM
Okay, topics posted to Trello: Research and Pattern vs Pattern

It's somewhat understandable, our questions are a bit more high level and they get too much crap, so when they get a good P.SE question they just keep it there...

Accompanying Text: Your question has been deemed an affront to Van Neumann, Turing, Hopper, Backus and Knuth. You've made the gods very angry today. To the pit with you!

@YannisRizos I thought I saw a meta post the other day about that, and the posted answer was to put the questions on the site they belong on. I'm looking for it, but can't remember what it was called

5:34 PM
@Rachel Obviously, that's the canonical answer... But not everyone abides by it, and scouting SO for questions that are better suited here is a very good idea...

@YannisRizos Yes, I changed from looking for highly voted questions that would fit better on P.SE to looking at new questions that might fit better on P.SE

@Rachel Yes, there are problems with the ridiculously upvoted questions, even if they fit P.SE. Those we are better off re-asking.

Question: Is this SO question on-topic for P.SE? Before you jump to a "no, it's a poll looking for experience, it's just trash" response, please take into account that it's really asking about the concept of shared memory and when it is useful. Specifically, how the volatile keyword is used for this. Thoughts?

@Rachel One problem I didn't mention earlier with those highly upvoted questions is that we can't be sure they are highly upvoted because they are great, or because the typical average SO codemonkey thought they where great...

22
Q: Why does volatile exist?

theschmitzerWhat does the volatile keyword do? In C++ what problem does it solve? In my case, I have never knowingly needed it.

@cdeszaq I would think thats more of a SO question since it is asking about syntax
the word "volatile" was hammered into my brain during college...

user20683
5:41 PM
@cdeszaq It's definitely an implementation question though the problem it solves "shared data bugs" are interesting

@Rachel That's a good point. I guess it is just a bit to language specific.
I only ask because it came up in the meta tavern chat and I was against just closing it, since I found the content and the premise useful. I had initially missed the focus on syntax and only keyed in on the concepts, which made me think that P.SE, not SO, was a better home since it was more conceptual. In retrospect, all it needs is a good editor scrubbing and it's a fine fit for SO.

Hrrrm is it bad that when someone asks me for book recommendations about WPF on my blog, which is about WPF, that I have no answer? I don't read books... I read google
at least, not technical books. fairytales are another story :)

user20683
@Rachel given that O'Reilly was about the only publish not slobbering all over SOPA I generally recommend them.

I read one WPF book and it was enough to drive me away from technical books forever
It wasn't that it was bad, it just didn't explain the entire picture and information found on google was better

@cdeszaq I would say it's one of the questions that could work in either site (or not work in both). Since SOpedians liked it and there are good answers, no point in bringing it over here...

Q: Mediator vs Observer?

RachelCan someone provide me with a canonical answer on the differences between an Observer and a Mediator, and a summary of when you should use one pattern over the other? I am unsure of what kind of situation would require an Observer and what kind would require a Mediator

5:54 PM
@YannisRizos After letting my brain cool off from the initial response to it, I agree with you 100%. And your reasoning is solid. Perhaps those reasons should go into a list of factors that make up a good or bad migration

@Rachel Kill kill kill destroy!
@cdeszaq It's always a per case decision... Unfortunately.
We overlap with SO too much, and it's not always obvious.

@YannisRizos Yes, I agree, but I think having a set of metric (or at least better / more clear guidelines) would help
@YannisRizos And I agree with that 100%

@Rachel Oh, a good answer already! Perhaps you were right :)

@YannisRizos I think the quote in this answer is a great way to describe the difference.

@cdeszaq Yes it is, but still there are some questions that would work in both sites... unfortunately.
And some extremely rare cases where half the question would be perfect for P.SE and the other half perfect for SO

6:00 PM
@YannisRizos True. The breadth of developing software is both a blessing and a curse...it goes from a mile-high-view down to machine code in the blink of an eye.

psr
6:40 PM
So, is it bad form to cross post my answer to Rachel's Mediator Vs. Observer to SO?

@psr lol I'd say no. I often copy/paste my answers to duplicate questions on SO with minor modifications to make them more accurately answer the question
It's more rep for you ^_^

psr
@Rachel - Oh good. I'm rarely on SO so my rep there is currently 549. Mostly I don't want to write code for free. Maybe I could follow the "design" tag or something.

7:00 PM
@psr I try and keep my answers to explaining why things do/don't work and explaining what should be done instead of just posting working code. This keeps people learning so they won't come back for another working code sample when they encounter the same issue :)

TCS has some awesome questions

user20683
I find it interesting that we don't have a "soft-question" category

user20683
a consequence of our history?

Ok, I understood the first paragraph but then the question went completely over my head lol
I think that's why we don't get those questions - because we can't answer them :)
Besides, the top answer on here would probably be something like "make him walk the requested distance and check where he stopped"

user20683
@Rachel the question basically says "how much time (very generally) would it take us to determine where he would stop"

user20683
7:27 PM
in big O terms

And a programmers solution would probably be to make him walk the distance and check where he stopped :)

I plan to go to grad school down the line to among other things try to understand Haskell at more than a "million monkeys with keyboards" level.

Reminds me of this joke: cs.uni.edu/~mccormic/humor.html (I originally heard this using a Programmer, an Engineer, and something else, but I forget where that link is)

And the gaming site solution would be to get the "Super Mario Galaxy Horizon Walker Achievement" and post how long it took.

user20683
@psr and how many points they got

user20683

Game Dev would get the precise randerings for it and simulate the whole thing in blender

Programmers would make silly jokes about it in chat instead of doing real programming like the real programmers on SO

I'm trying to research what I need a bit, but it's boring and my mind is wandering :)

@Rachel Sorry for the notifications: pretty sure we're at an impasse now anyway

8:29 PM
Hey quick question (sorry if i am in the wrong location)
i think down-votes should require comments
Is it possible to suggest this to mods?

@NecArn This has been suggested many times before. Here's one example: meta.programmers.stackexchange.com/a/160/1130
I always explain my down-votes, and encourage others to do the same, however its intentionally not required

Understood, thanks!

@Rachel If only there was a way to force people to explain their upvotes...

@NecArn I often see people asking about downvotes in the comments. Sometimes they get a reply, but not always
@YannisRizos You want 1764 comments on this question? :) programmers.stackexchange.com/q/46716/1130

@Rachel That's the point, it wouldn't have 1764 upvotes if people had to give good reason why they think the question deserves an upvote...

8:38 PM
@YannisRizos You mean you're serious?? What a horrible idea! :)

@YannisRizos @YannisRizos mostly because people have the same questions. Is that a valid reason?

@Rachel I'm serious in that I think upvoting should be considered equal to downvoting, but I'm not at all serious in forcing people to explain either way.

You'd have 1764 votes with comments containing "great question" or "aaaaaaaaaaaaaaa"

@Rachel Yes I know, same as with if downvote comments were enforced

If I upvote for some other reason then "great question" or "I have the same question", I'll comment. But the majority of my upvotes are one of those two reasons
Actually I can't of any other reason I'd upvote or have upvoted... hrrm..

@Rachel The great question is the reason that I think needs an explanation. What's so great about it?

@YannisRizos lol you'd kill the site

@Rachel Probably :)
How about upvotes costing a little rep, like downvotes?

@YannisRizos Don't be stupid :p
upvotes are a way of encouraging good questions. Downvotes are a way to discourage bad ones. Don't penalize people for encouragement :)
k time to go put my tech support hat on for the rest of the day, bye :)

@Rachel Upvotes are only supposed to be about peer review, encouragement is a byproduct. If people wait for upvotes to be encouraged to ask their questions at a great site, that's their problem...
But yes, won't be making a feature request about any of this (anytime soon)

great argument starter, this one :)

In December we launched the 3rd ever Stack Overflow Annual User Survey to measure changes in user demographics and trends from last year.  First, a big thank you to everyone who participated, and now on to the results!

Demographics Let’s start off with some basic demographics: the majority (50.3%) of users are between ages 25-34 and very experienced (64.3% of users have 6+ years of programming experience). So, where do all of these developers work?  The percentage of developers working at a start-up remained strong with 30.7% of respondents.  We then took a look at salary by company size, and, not surprisingly, users who work at larger companies tend to make more money. …

Q: Do sysadmins develop a special character?

GoodDevI noticed in the different companies the sysadmins always had the same kind of personality: roughly egocentric, obsessive about control, and not trusting anyone with "their" computers and servers. I was just curious if the job of sysadmin push people to become some kind of possessive douchebag du...

Why would anyone upvote this kind of crap, I'll never understand...
