@GudrunBurwitz No, favoriting room does not mean that you get notifications. It means that it is displayed among your favorited rooms. (Notice that in chat you can choose several tabs to display rooms, one of them is favorite.)

3:34 PM
@GudrunBurwitz I am unaware of something like that. (And I have doubts that something like that could be useful. Too many emails.)
You can ask at meta.SE whether there is such a possibility. But I very much doubt it.

Oh look, @Jyrki is here.

Looking

A plurality of moderators in the channel is quite rare.
Local moderators, anyway.
And we're down to one Daniel Fischer.

Maybe we scared Jyrki away with our starring at him.

That is a possibility.
Maybe he went outside to enjoy the sunlight.

6:36 PM
Hi @Asaf. I came to check out what Gudrun's saying here. Then missus needed me for some emergency repairs.
And, yes, I did go out to pull down our national flag (that was up all night and day to celebrate the solstice weekend).

@JyrkiLahtonen As if you have night there right now!

8:13 PM
:-) Here in the Southern parts of the country we do. It will be noticeably darker in an hour or two (quarter past eleven now, and sun is close to the horizon). We may even need to turn on the street lights. In Kilpisjärvi OTOH IIRC sun will set some time in late July early August.

@JyrkiLahtonen Heh, well, I'll be there in late January...

January! Ok, you won't be needing sun lotion :-)

@JyrkiLahtonen Well, seeing how I don't need one in Israel, I doubt I'll need one in Lapland :P

It's not always the coldest area in the country. But something like -40 would not be unexpected in January.

@JyrkiLahtonen Well. With that I'm going to need some extra preparation... :P

8:20 PM
But I do wonder why would anyone want to organize a workshop there at that time of the year?

@JyrkiLahtonen Well. Northern lights. And nobody else is using the facility... :P

There is a reasonable chance of seeing some Northern lights. But the magnetic pole is somewhere in the arctic Canadian Islands, so it is a bit further out than you might think.

Well, this is the third Arctic Set Theory conference, and in the last two I've heard that some people managed to get a glimpse of the aurora.
And well, you know, The Thing is one of the best body-horror films of all time.

And who am I to criticize anyone for a little scientific tourism. After all, I had to go there, when Norwegian colleagues organized a workshop in Longyearbyen, Svalbard (78 degrees North, so close to 1000 km further up North from Kilpisjärvi).

Svalbard is an iced sea away at that time of year... :P

8:25 PM
But that was in July!! The sun was just spinning in the middle of the sky. The temperature reached an all time high of +11 degree during my stay!
And no polar bears in sight :-(

@JyrkiLahtonen Well, 11 is somewhat of the coldest of winter in Beersheba. :P

But. We took a boat tour to see a glacier. The crew picked up a chunk of 20000 year old ice from the Arctic Ocean. A bit salty, but still worked well with a nice shot of Scotch.

@JyrkiLahtonen Yeah, sounds about right. Probably with something peaty like Lagavulin.

Don't remember exactly. Not sure I would want ice with Lagavulin. By the way. I restocked my supply of Quarter Cask Laphroaig for solstice. Sláinte!
Too bad it doesn't travel well in the www. I would like to share some.

@JyrkiLahtonen Well, don't put the ice itself. Just melt it a little bit and put a couple drops of water.
That's what I do, when my whisky is in Israeli room temperature, which is 6-10 degrees hotter than "room temperature" where whisky is fun to drink.
This is why during the summer I prefer whiskies that benefit from a few drops of water.

8:34 PM
Re: The Thing. I never saw the movie. But the story is good. Nothing like that near Kilpisjärvi. May be a pack of wolves or a polar fox. Or a wolverine or a lynx. All of them are actually quite rare.
But you will probably see a lot of reindeers. The locals ranch them up there.

@JyrkiLahtonen I watched The Thing, not the Ice Station Zebra one, though. And I don't expect to leave the station that often anyway.
My body is built for the desert, not the tundra.

Well, I'm not sure my body is really built for either of those :-/
Dessert may be.

@JyrkiLahtonen I stopped eating dessert a long time ago. Unless an after-dinner drink is a type of dessert (not schnapps, that's disgustingly sweet).
Well. I should really finish up a few things before tomorrow.

See y'a!

@JyrkiLahtonen Bye!
