why did @SmokeDetector join?
is there some spam to smash?

@TheWanderer it always sits in here
it's chat socket probably timed out and refreshed, so it looks like a logon.

but it just joined

it's always on though

oh
@ThomasWard ALWAYS

it's always silently lurking here, yes.

1:30 AM
like you

so it can report when there IS spam.
@TheWanderer pretty much :P

except you usually generate the spam

not really.
I'm not a spam AI.

you sure?

1:58 AM
@TheWanderer so I was playing mindcraft with some friends.. we had gone into the nether, where there was a nice little base. Someone accidentally angered the zombie pigmen so we filled in all of the holes in the base because we couldn't fight them all.. then one of my friends accidentally glitch broke the obsidian in the portal..
I had lost my flint and steel when I died earlier

Lol rip

Ugh america. Pass a bill that makes it legal to sell our internet traffic history? That's a damn shame.

who is thewanderer? BAN

@Seth So where'd you get stuck?

@ThomasWard inside the little base someone had built around the portal.
One of us managed to teleport elsewhere and get a flint tho, so it ended up alright.

2:10 AM
heh
just rcon/admin that crap :p

:P
I mean, no one dared try to leave, that was for sure. We were surrounded by zombie pigmen..

lolol
@Seth There was a little base once I had on a Minecraft server that was basically an "Expressway through Hell" to get to the far other end of the main world map. We used the Nether as a subway station. Zombie Pigs got inside the well-sealed-up subway unfortunately heh
even though it was really bright in there :P

hahaha
@ThomasWard zombie pigmen spawn in the nether in all lighting conditions so..

@Seth truth. We just added a few automated bots that were our NPCs that attacked the zombie pigmen inside the subway and then disappeared after killing the one in the subway
sorta like autoturrets but better

Gosh . . . am I stupid ? No seriously , am I stupid ?
is the whole point of college to walk into class and know everything already or to learn ?
nah, that's probably it. I am just stupid
I am psychologically and physically incapable of comprehending and guessing professor's mind
f**k

@Serg No, you're not.
The point is to learn, but most professors suck.

There's not much more scary at 1:30AM than the carbon monoxide alarms going off.
... and nothing more shameful than to realize after they go through and check that it's nothing more than an old detector and a critically failing battery, even though it sounded the way it should for actual CO detections.
... this is the only reason I am awake.

i need to run swf file
which player i can use
any suggeations

7:29 AM
@AbhiAdr: Gnash has been more or less abandoned a while ago afaik. On top of that Adobe never released a stand-alone Flash player for recent Flash versions for Linux. Your best bet is to open the SWF file in a web browser with Flash Player plug-in.

Q: Restrict GRUB to primary display

@TheWanderer Heh. Don't bother, they decided they don't want to be part of "my fiefdom".
I became fixated on not being able to ask the question in my own voice and my own words. If you people cannot understand that simple fact. Then, I will politely walk away. Nothing more... nothing less. It's your little fiefdom... your edicts. I will not rock the boat again. — Orian 22 mins ago

That's early morning for me.

Fiefdom? Who's the English teacher now?

@ElderGeek We don't want to be part of your fiefdom.

@ElderGeek I put the silliness back since I wanted to show an egregious example, and I refer to it later in the answer.
I put it in a quote block though so at least it's separate now.

@terdon +1 for : cOrrect CAPitaliZation and grammar is eXtreMely impotrtant to the understandment opf your posstes ... :D :D :D
@terdon what is "OCD" (OCD English Teacher) by the way ?

@cl-netbox Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. A real disorder which is horribly abused in everyday language to mean anyone who is too obsessive with detail.

12:59 PM
Haha I'm reading a great article by David Foster Wallace called Authority and American Usage

Or Optical Character Deletion. Take your pick.

@terdon Thanks :)

@cl-netbox you saw it was in capitals? >:)

It's so far largely about language pedants/snobs/police (he admits to being an incurable one himself)

@Rinzwind yes ... hahaha :D

Hi
This article has made me extra edity today even though I'm on mobile :S

@jokerdino I wasn't aware I even had a fiefdom
@terdon no worries, just my OCD coming to the forefront. ;-)

@ElderGeek Oy! That's my fiefdom!
Given to me fair and square by the OP.

@terdon Thanks for the chuckle. I needd that this morning as I watch the river rise next to my house.....

Ouch. That doesn't sound good.
Are you or your house in any danger?

Me, no. I'm still spry enough to wade if need be. The house? Time will tell.

@ElderGeek What ??? I cross my fingers for you that the water doesn't enter your house ! :)

Ugh fingers crossed...

@cl-netbox Thank you. Needless to say I feel the same.

1:13 PM
This sort of thing happen often in your neck of the woods?

@Zanna Thanks

@ElderGeek Notice any Hercules around?
Sorry, stay safe and be careful.

@terdon Often, no, but since my lot borders on the river it is a cause of concern during periods of heavy rain

I went to university in York, UK, a town very used to yearly or almost yearly flooding. There's a pub there that has two floors. They simply open the top one when the bottom one os flooded and move back down once the water recedes.

@jokerdino Haven't seen Hercules or perhaps I'd request moving my house to higher ground. I promise I'll be careful and leave before the furniture starts floating (God forbid)
Fortunately here it's been once every 10 or 20 years (so far). Hard to tell what the future will bring.

@terdon I love York! But the Jorvik Viking Centre was so badly damaged by flooding last year they had to close it down

@James That's hilarious!
I hope that's not all SE does for the 1st

2:48 PM
@Zanna I hated it with a passion, I'm afraid. Just couldn't take the weather.

@terdon so . . . question. Besides text processing, what's the second and third biggest thing that Perl is used for ?
Also, thanks for reviewing my answer earlier. i'll need to mess around with sed to figure it out.

@Serg Yeah, that one's a pain. More complicated than it looks.
@Serg Well, it used to be a huge part of cgi scripts but far less so these days. A lot of DB stuff, I would guess and a lot of pipelines. Don't really know though. Not in terms of real percentages or numbers.

3:05 PM
I'm just looking for a more or less serious project to pick up to practice and learn.

@terdon haha the weather is indeed vile, but my home town has equally vile weather and also absolutely nothing to do. I guess I love York solely for the one awesome vegan restaurant and because I like walking on ancient walls

@Serg I just asked tchrist in the ELU chat room. He'll know, if anyone does.
@Zanna Oh it's a great place to visit. I was really taken with it when I first arrived.
Sysadmin stuff is indeed your best bet. It's been the sysadmin language on *nix systems for many years.

@terdon sysadmin, giant re-entrant webapps, etc
Stupid oneboxing.

hi

That'll be it, I've never had to stay there more than 3 days (primary school residential visit)

Welp, sysadmin stuff it is then !

3:10 PM
@Zanna That and that there's no accounting for taste. Many of my classmates loved it.
@Serg you might want to follow the conversation in the ELU room right now.

So I bought a new case for my raspberry pi's

@NathanOsman I did that. Last month. Still was dead batteries, so maybe a bad battery batch? Meh, at least it's not an issue that resulted in my own death. At least I called the fire department, they responded, and gave the 'all clear'. As i said, better safe than sorry.

it is pretty awesome, I will not lie...

@Serg you could change it to Sergiy :) Hi my friend ! :)

@terdon heh, i suspect Stephane's full name gives you trouble as well

And I was assuming your last name is kolo, referring to this:

@cl-netbox heh, i could buy that wouldn't help with people confusing me with @Seth
also hi

@terdon these are the first letters of his last name ... :)

@terdon lol i remember that translation . Kolo is just shortened bto catter to English speakers

@cl-netbox Then I'd be fine with the full thing :)

@Serg yes it would - look yourself -> Serg | Seth ... Sergiy | Seth ... looks much more different - right ? :)

4:22 PM
Huh. The translation doesn't work any more foir some reason.

Well, let's do it this way. Everyone who wants me to change name to full version say Aye
Say Nay if you don't want me to change name

@Serg no ... that would be a too long name

@cl-netbox but it would be official

@Serg okay, then do it ... so, "Aye" ! :D

@TheWanderer your vote ?

4:25 PM
@Serg would be "Hue" of course ! what else ? :D

Well, let's do it this way. Everyone who wants me to change name to full version say Aye
somebody star that please ?

@Serg already decided : you can change it now ... the vote from @terdon (chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/36417688#36417688) counts 100 votes ... 1 diamond mod terdon vote = worthy 100 normal user votes ... hahaha :D :D :D

Oh no you don't! You will not pin that on me!

@Serg everyone refuse to star that...

<.< . . .

we will not let the Russians effect the vote like this!

4:32 PM
We have no normal users here

But I'm Ukrainian

@Serg right...

@JacobVlijm No, only np-hard.

@Serg those of us the western world don't know the difference :-P

@terdon i was about to make same joke

4:33 PM
@Serg That would worry me, if I were you.
:P

@JacobVlijm correct ! your vote counts -1 ! :D :D :D

@terdon Import numpy as no

heh

Great. Now I understand python jokes.

I have been sullied!

4:34 PM
@terdon Heh, I'm already beyond saving. I have hard time communicating with my parents when it comes to jokes. I wanna tell *nix jokes and puns, but they won't understand
OK, last call . . . Everyone who wants to change my name to full version say Aye, otherwise say Nay

@Serg why not the other way around? SE

@Serg AAAYYYEEE

@JacobVlijm The other way around ? You mean greS ?

...or S
Or simply ...

@Serg beware ... :D

4:38 PM
@JacobVlijm nah, S is too mainstream

Oops food is prepared for me :)

@Serg don't listen to Jacob ... he tries to confuse you ! :D

He has confused me for awhile now, so that's already done

@JacobVlijm then eat it ! :D
Bon apetite @JacobVlijm ! :)

so serg... i beat you to 40 :)

OK, well looks like there's only @cl-netbox voted for name change
i guess i will keep it same
@KazWolfe . . . but I'm still at 45k . . . .i win in repz

OK, 2 users

Well, let's try it

@Serg nice :) leave the room and jump back in to refresh the name :)

4:56 PM
It'll take a minute to change

@Serg ah ... on the main site it is visible already :)

@cl-netbox yes but not in the chat. chat always takes forever

@Serg yes, seems so ... by the way, your last name : looks a bit like being Hungarian ... is one of your parents from there ? :)

Q: How to prevent sensitive CLI arguments being logged in journalctl while using sudo?

@cl-netbox no, actually. The last name comes from father's side, and father's side comes from Russia on grandmother's side

@cl-netbox username expansion

@KazWolfe means what ? means he could disable showing his last name and can show only his first name in the side bar ?

@cl-netbox No, if he has a "big" message, it's going to expand his last name.
usually that means multi-line messages, like this one.
(or multiple messages sent right after each other)

@KazWolfe ah ... thanks ! :) now I understand it ! :)

5:36 PM
Disengages C++ mode; engages Java mode...

@NathanOsman full awesome ahead!
actually, I have a good argument for why systemd-resolved is a good move.
systemd is, in essence, a utility to initialize a system. Meaning, start and manage services, the userland, and basically everything else to create a "usable" system. In short, it's init.

It's waaaaay more than init.

This includes networking for obvious reasons. Now, domain name resolution would be an important part of initializing the network stack. Especially as literally everything nowadays uses hostnames/domain names. Even more so with the deployment of IPv6 where memorizing and using IP addresses is now completely infeasible.

@Seth also it works absolutely reliable ... on my systems at least ... Hi Seth ! :)

And, of course, we can drop out systemd-resolved for dnsmasq or resolved or whatever we choose, but it comes bundled by default now because DNS is pretty much an essential system for networking now.

6:35 PM
Isn't Ethernet a network? askubuntu.com/a/559043/61218
@TheXed what's that?

6:45 PM
@Anwar technically yes, it's a network protocol.
How do you guys like my name change ?

It makes me grateful for tab autocompletion of usernames.

Good evening though ;-)

M. BecerraSo, there's this guy.
