12:12 AM
@TheBrownOne Not even heard of this, what is it?

12:24 AM
So what now do you want to fix it or do you want to nuke it from orbit? As it is of now its not really clear what you want a solution for. — Videonauth 4 mins ago

We will start upgrading SQL Server for Stack Overflow and all other Stack Exchange properties in about 30 minutes: http://stackstatus.net/post/145427774884/sql-server-2016-rtm-upgrade-june-5th-2016

user139252
12:55 AM
@Videonauth It's a mathematics programming language. I'm trying to find a good replacement for Mathematica as I do not have a Mathematica license.

ah ok
you might need to give me a crash course sometime to how to use the VNC to see a monitor output on a second machine

We are upgrading and patching all user-facing secondary SQL Server systems now.

user139252
2:01 AM

@TheBrownOne thank you very much :)

user139252
You can skip the installation of XFCE, it'll work with any DE.

user139252
Actually, no

user139252
not that guide

user139252
that guide is bantha poo-doo

user139252
2:05 AM
@Videonauth This answer is straight forward and lets you use whatever DE you're already using.

good will read into it :) planning on setting up a headless box for IP-cop to put between my router and my machine, handling the firewall etc

user139252
Oh, if the box is headless then you can read the first guide

We are taking Stack Overflow down for a SQL Server failover in just a moment - we'll be back up ASAP.

2:18 AM
All sites are back online. No further user outages are planned.

2:39 AM
@TheBrownOne bookmarked both :)

Hello Everyone @videonauth hacked me. :)

hed is kidding just helped him a bit through teamviewer connection
no hack involved :p

My cursor is moving.
move my cursor.
:O
I have been hacked. :O

hitting the upgrade to 16.04 wish me luck

2:57 AM
@HenryWHHack there has been a bug/breach with team viewer recently so make sure you close it as soon as you are done.

@Seth exact this is why i told him to not install it

See the mods really do care about us. :)
I think.
@Seth How did you know we was using teamviewer?
strange. o_O

Oh right. :D

erg after 10 and upstairs neighbor playing loud music, at least I don't work tomorrow... :/

@Mateo :/
You could call the police if it lasts much longer.

they had been stopping at 9 during the week - but dosn't help when work asks to come in early a few days and I really needed to start sleeping around 8...

There is this one telemarketer that keeps calling the home phone before 8 in the morning and after 9 at night.
And then they keep changing their number after I block them

@Seth In a new debian unstable install, cinnamon desktop. installed vim, then right clicked on a text file and 'open with vim' was the first option in the context menu! first time I've ever seen that.

3:16 AM
@Seth here in germany you could sue them for that, its illegal here without your consent

over here there is a "do not call" list - but it only signs you up for political and non-for profit spam
aka, they take a generous cut off the top... (to pay for "administration")
of which are exempt from the rules of the list - so they just use it as a do call list for those causes

@chaskes sweet. was this gvim or just vim?
@Mateo ugh.

regular terminal vim (no gui version is installed)

nice

3:47 AM
@Seth Where are those associations stored? (I searched the site but didn't a good answer)

which?

Can I unkick mute a user?
I want to kick @Videonauth.

That's not nice.

the 'open with' in context menus

ah. I think those are run by plugins @chaskes.. but I dunno, it might have changed.

3:50 AM
@Seth I am testing something.

Sounds like it might be a good question for the site.

I was afraid you might say that :)

hehe

user139252
@Mateo I feel you. Our next door neighbor enjoys mariachi music with his/her drunken extended family until about 3AM. Every. Saturday. Night.

@TheBrownOne sounds like a new torture method for guantanamo

3:53 AM
@TheBrownOne guess you will be up with me for a bit longer then

user139252
So, I'm trying to look into remote access software for my students to connect to my mint box and use the RPG Maker I purchased. I need something that sends audio data across the connection, but also allows for multiple users to be using their own virtual desktops

user139252
I found nomachine, but it's rather expensive for their terminal server license that does that

user139252
I would just say they could x-forwarding, but I don't know if audio works with that and not all students have Linux at home

Not having Linux should result in a F-- at least xD
kidding

Ubuntu is still installing in the vm.
You can come back in my room now @Videonauth. :)

4:01 AM
I know that i can, but im not sure if kick-mutes are recorded as bad on your account xD

I will make you an own. :)

too many are, I think.

@Seth see and since i considering nominating for being a mod i would not like to many bad flags on my account :), you tell me if there are any yet

kicks aren't recorded as "bad flags", although they are visible if you look for them.

what are kicks?

4:04 AM
I know 3 kicks used to put restrictions on your account, but I think they changed how that works, since I've seen it not happen recently.
@chaskes pretty much the same as /kick in IRC.
Except they come with a short ban (30 sec, 1 min, 5 min iirc)

ok thx

well, restarting for the 16.04 upgrade
at least I'll get that done I guess, might have to sleep most of my day off to recover...
seems like the upgrade went well so far - it booted up

@TheBrownOne that's nothing. my neighbors use their 200 yard voices at 7 AM to discuss random anything just to be obnoxious and wake me up, since I wear headphones and stay up until 4 or 5 AM... but they see my light go out right after they wake up.

4:20 AM
WARNING: if you have the open source nvidia driver 367.18 installed dont run the new update to that, i just bricked my main machine effectively

4:30 AM
sighs great a cant seem to get my system back up and running

nice the system76 wallpapers are always cool

@Mateo Do you have a system76 too? I just got one and love it.

oh yeah

I use the robot unleash background in unity and the one you just showed in kubuntu
they're great aren't they?

I got the kudu 17"

4:37 AM
me too!
and light enough to carry back and forth to home/work

nice, almost got the next one up, but didn't want the desktop replacement

Same reason here. Using Intel graphics and traditional hdd saved $800 off the next model. I figure I can get a real desktop with a big nvidia next year.
without making a pest of myself, I try to recommend it where I can.
OP's answer just says "I'm a dupe" : askubuntu.com/questions/782993/…
Plus the desktops cost about 50% less than the laptops with the same specs

The MacBuntu themes are so rubbish.

4:59 AM
Hello friends :D

hullo

Hi @Videonauth , Do you still have that thingie ?? ( NathanOsman's tool )

yep

5:05 AM
which browser do you use ?

user139252
So, I've settled on using X2Go. It works out really well.

firefox

see-ya

user139252

@TheBrownOne x2go is a freenx fork
it works fine, but I had some crashing with it and fedora

user139252
5:13 AM
It's working pretty well with Mate and the Cinnamon and XFCE desktops

@seth unity-tweak-tool needed "hud" installed, some reason not installed on 16.04 or a dependency in the install?
anyway, just ran into that
huh, the launcher on bottom isn't bad

5:36 AM
um, how do you remove the giant empty toolbar in the new gedit...
I allways just used the menus and went minimal on it
blah, I'll have to abandon gedit

is there a boot option which will boot a machine into a simple TTY mode ?

5:57 AM
@Videonauth maybe pressing E on grub and doing some changes ... or sth like that. :|
problems with graphics driver ??

yeah im able to TTY now with "nomodeset text"

ah...

ask me i upgraded earlier and the new nvidia graphics driver they pushed on the open source ppa did screw me up badly

Ooh... which version is that ?? 367 ?

actually trying to recover my system since around 6:30 my time so 1,5 hours in so far

5:59 AM
am ?

yeah the 367 driver it was they pushed a new package and i was dumb enough to upgrade
am yes
nwo i have no clue how to get rid of that fricken libcuda
it throws me errors all time long

@Seth you might be interested in this if you are still doing snaps: uappexplorer.com/app/hello-unity.mhall119

I had a lot of troubles with nvidia when I was using GNOME, I couldn't live without Nvidia drivers ;) . SO back to unity with nvidia 361.

You dont have any backups ? CZ may be

i have a backup of yesterday morning yes but i would loose all my changes i did over the day on my written stuff

I think I might stick with the bottom launcher for a bit

6:02 AM
so first trying to recover before i nuke it from orbit

good luck :)

hm, maybe not - feels like wasting space
maybe on the desktop it would be better

@Videonauth Ubuntu is still installing.

wow that takes a long time o_O

6:09 AM
I know on a normal pc it takes 1 hour.
that's all

ok seems i have my machine back, still not fully recovered yet

nice

6:26 AM
:D
@Videonauth do you have grafix?

@Mateo Hi ;) I see your mouse cursor in your screen-shot , how to do that ? I usually make a small video using ssh and take a screen shot from that if I require cursor in my screen shot.

seems to pop up on many Hackintoshes
grafix is short for graphics fixer.
And suprizengly I'm on my Hackintosh

Friends,Their is a cool guy from Myanmar who speaks English and many languages,He has told me about zawgyi fonts,How can i install this?

A: Cannot remove nvidia-opencl-icd-367

VideonauthO.k. to fix this (I had the same troubles this morning) you have two ways: 1. The clean way proposed to me by the launchpad team per e-mail: To work around this issue, you may first switch to a text console by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1, then stop your display manager using sudo systemctl stop <displ...

Fix for a bug which occured this morning in the driver-tem ppa

Everyone me and videonauth wasted 10 hours. >:(

no you learned a bit along so the time is not wasted

Why do I need a VM of Ubuntu anyway I have a full install of Ubuntu on my other pc.

11:33 AM
If you need to ask...

12:00 PM
Sad they removed the link to the last election list already wanted to have a look again how a application can look like

Hello friends ;D

12:41 PM
God why did no one tell me that there is an auto comentary tool for this site :p

@Videonauth check askubuntu.com/election

Any one know a good small linux OS that is under 50MB ?

@jokerdino Thank you very much, want to pre write it today if i have a calm moment
@Neil Tinycore
16 MB
or 106 if you need wireless support
if you not need a GUI you can get it even down to 11 MB

@Videonauth is the site down. i can't seem to find another down link for TinyCore-current.iso

mhmm weir i just had downloaded earlier today the CorePlus

1:32 PM
@jokerdino which are the moderation badges mentioned on the pages?

no real requirement on the badges

ah ok

the least expected is consistent top quality contributions to the site with an eye on community
so, you need to be active on site and meta as well.

well i just started and not have much meta participation yet

most people get elected with a minimum of year participation or so

1:35 PM
in the contray i have much , mabye even to much activity on the main site
so no much chances for me then i guess

na, crazy things have happened. see: me

well I give it a shot then :)

try your luck. but dont worry about winning election or not. Keep your good work and you will get your recognition that you deserve

:)
I wonder do i have a delted messages count? I mean deleted by review

number of posts that you deleted by review or your own posts that were deleted?
either number probably is not available

1:44 PM
ah ok because i saw it on the last summary which is now gone that this is displayed
or may be displayed

it is linking to your reviews tab in profile

@Mateo there is a package called "hud"? o_O
Hmm, it's set to [installed, automatic] for me.
But I upgraded from 16.04.

looking back at my election page, I didn't realize I had quite a bit of support going back then.
@Seth hmm you are the dev in charge of UTT

You know, everyone @Nathan endorses gets elected. Get your bribes ready people! :P

2:00 PM
not everyone elected is endorsed by him but the reverse is true.

@jokerdino :p

2:31 PM
@Mateo well if that was an issue could you file a bug with the details?

Q: File server.js is being edited (by root with nano 2.4.2, PID xxxx); continue?

rangmaI am on Ubuntu 15.10 x64. When I am trying to edit server.js file, it is opening a blank nano editor and displaying "File server.js is being edited (by root with nano 2.4.2, PID xxxx); continue?" with options - Yes, No, Cancel. I copied a backup file on this file but still I am getting the same...

Anyone got any ideas on this? :)

Paranoid PandaI ran the command: sudo apt-get dist-upgrade Today and this was how it went: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... user136984
Oh dear, I see the new community moderator elections are coming up... :D

yep

user136984
2:41 PM
Whenever this happens, I always think "Why don't I nominate myself?", but then I think "Who on earth vote for me? :D"! :P

user136984
So who is going to nominate themselves? Can you nominate others or just yourself?

@Mateo hmm, well the hud package is in the manifest: releases.ubuntu.com/xenial/ubuntu-16.04-desktop-amd64.manifest
@ParanoidPanda Just yourself.
@ParanoidPanda This is the first time it has happened since you joined the site :P

user136984
@Seth: There was another on Worldbuilding where I considered nominating myself but decided that Towels weren't enough... :P

user136984
How often are these moderator elections?

@ParanoidPanda As needed.

2:46 PM
I'm currently writing my application @ParanoidPanda

user136984
@Seth: When was the last one?

@ParanoidPanda 2014 askubuntu.com/election

@ParanoidPanda I thought that on SU
I won. ;p

@RPiAwesomeness 2013? Meh.
We have better things to be spending our time on than being time traveling topic-police.

2:50 PM
yeah community is digging graves lately ;)

(the policy on development questions was a lot more lax back then too)

@Seth k
:)

3:05 PM
Hello everybody :)

hello deviltux :D erm i mean cl-netbox

lol

user136984
Right, anyway, I will be interested to see who nominates themselves this year. :)

user136984
And maybe I will nominate myself next time around if it's not too soon and Pandas haven't already taken control by force! >;P

sigh

3:20 PM
@Zacharee1 you have mail

I'll take a read and start some proofing :p

That would be nice of you , appreciate that

Hello friends :D
Man ... AU chat is the best chat.

Hi !

all other SE chat rooms are dead
@JonasCz Hi 😃

3:33 PM
Hello JonasCz

@Videonauth have to go for a bit, almost done

np i still tinker about how to come to an end lol

@Videonauth video killed the radio star ... hello and good afternoon ! :D

hehehehe
breaking sweat at the moment tinkering on my nomination post

relax, the election gonna take 3 weeks

3:48 PM
yes but like they say the first impression is the one which counts most

hmm, I took two shots at the election

i have seen, have read through nearly all nomination posts
saw even a few good ides but well copy and pasting isnt my style so i need to find own words

@Videonauth hm wow

Oli's one is very humorous :)

it's the Brit in him

3:57 PM
@jokerdino does your term end, or are you a mod forever until you get in trouble?

I will be here.
why, you dont like me?

"you" in a more hypothetical sense :p

I think he asking more if there is a time period on it or if you when elected as moderator will be here till the lights go out
beside stepping down or being discharged

I will be one until it's decided I can no longer do my duty.

4:01 PM
thx

user136984
@Videonauth: I think that writing that nomination text is the thing that mostly scares me away... :D

user136984
I'm not great at those big speeches...

@ParanoidPanda yeah sitting over it since this morning

user136984
I just don't know what to say or how to say it... Nominating also means I need to link to LaunchPad and reveal my true identity, so that's another downside, and I don't think I'm quite ready for that here.

user136984
Then all you creepy people will find out who I am! ;P

4:04 PM
that's a bit rude and offensive

user136984
Oh come on, it was a joke, we all know you're the only real creepy person round here... ;P

you gotta stop it now.

beside what should i do if the tea-rex is gone i bought extra a pair super big shoes to walk in his footsteps :)

user136984
@jokerdino: Well, I'm a bit confused, you know I meant that as a friendly sorta joke don't you?

I dont take offensive jokes from people I am not close with.

4:09 PM
@Videonauth ding

W-wa

@ParanoidPanda Don't project yourself on others :p

and what you think about it? to long, to short, ok, bad, what is missing?

@Videonauth I wouldn't know. I just got carried away with writing it :p

Good morning, everyone.
I should totally get George to run.

4:11 PM
@NathanOsman afternoon here

Good morning/evening to you to o @NathanOsman

It's 9:11 for him
9:12 now

18:12 here :)

yeesh

I have hear people you endorse usually get elected @NathanOsman ... big puppy eyes

4:13 PM
I don't know how to word this question, so I'll ask here.. How do I make sshd accept user credentials outside the system (preivilegeseparation would be off, so it wouldn't try to change user)

@Videonauth heh... if that actually were true, I'm sure there would be an investigation :D

:))

It was an observation @Nathan.
I think Seth figured that.

Well, I may endorse someone but it won't be until I see who's running :P

@Zacharee1 big big thank you for amking my grammar mess something readable

4:15 PM
so in a text file in the sshd configuration I would just say something like user:Blabla password: secret
And these users wouldn't exist in the existing system, but as an outsider, when I try to log in I would type those credentials and I would be let in

lol np

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask though.

@SanicFaster assuming you're using Ubuntu, yes.
This would be the place.

Nathan may I send you something to have a read at and ask for your opinions on it?

Sure

4:23 PM
Or you too, I don't mind as many input I can get

No, it costs money.

Uh? so where you live no free data plans ?

I will give you words on your nomination post but I am afraid what weight my diamond will have.
@Videonauth never heard of free data.
@SanicFaster this is the right place, but we dont guarantee answers.
most of us are just chilling here

I don't mind
I'm sure if I ask out there, it won't make sense and I'll get downvoted from somewhere.

4:56 PM
@Seth strange - It seems there are cases that it is left behind on a 15.10 to 16.04 upgrade - install/reinstall of unity tweak tool didn't pull it in, had to google and find what the error needed

user139252
5:08 PM
@Videonauth Instead of using VNC, you can use what I discovered last night. Software called X2Go. You install the server on the PC that you want to do the actual computing, and then the client on the PC that you want to be in control.

user139252
You can launch new virtual desktops on demand over SSH

doesn't sound bad, is it free ?

user139252
Yep.

user139252
Over my gigabit LAN, I was able to play an emulated Wii game over it without any noticeable lag

user139252
I was even able to to watch Hulu. The benefit is that audio is also streamed over.

user139252
5:10 PM
VNC can't stream audio.

user139252
You can check it out here: wiki.x2go.org/doku.php

user139252
They've got a PPA for Ubuntu.

found it already and bookmarked it for later reading :)

5:48 PM
@Mateo Yes.. Later this year I'm going to try and rewrite most of the checking code so it doesn't implode when a package is missing.

6:04 PM
Cool, just a heads up, installing that made it work ;)

yeah I saw that!
Dunno if I can make it though.

7:14 PM
@Videonauth back now. Sure, I can read it.

How come I have to set Chrome to be my default browser every time I log into Windows 10?
@NathanOsman I turned cannibalistic on.'
Analytics lol

7:35 PM
Lol.
Thank you.
