Q: When a Linux (Ubuntu) system shuts down, which processes get sent a SIGTERM?

Ricky StewartIf I start an ongoing background process A which starts a child process B, and I ask the OS to shut down, which processes get sent a SIGTERM? Is it both A and B or is it just A (assuming that A should be responsible for shutting down B)?

Q: How to know which files (scripts and configurations) I have installed by apt-get?

NargesooI always use rpm --query --package-name to see what files (scripts and configurations) I have installed. I'm looking for the similar command in ubuntu. Is there any equivalent command for apt-get?

I think I have a working minigame now

@Seth at least it isn't XP. But Windows 10 Home?
So I just created a whole new partition layout on my drive. AND IT SHOULDN'T HAVE HAPPENED
Now I'm running a partition recovery program on another computer.
It's going really slowly, but it's found some stuff

That program would've taken 833 days, so I tried another, which would've taken 18, so now I need to file another

1:39 PM
hola
where are the grub specialists?

Tim
@kos kinda i guess!

kos
@Tim Thought so. :D

@OctavianDamiean grub needs a specialist? :P

sadly yes
ran into something quite interesting
upon cold boot, grub complains that it can't find the device with UUID xyz, after a reboot from the grub rescue console it suddenly finds said UUID and boots just fine
I just have no clue what could cause that
the UUID that it can't find initially is the correct UUID, I just checked manually

kos
@OctavianDamiean Can you see the drive in the BIOS upon cold boot?

1:48 PM
yes
I should maybe add that grub is installed on the root partition, so no extra boot partition at the start of that disk
but I'm not sure if that could cause this particular behavior

kos
So GRUB is installed on the same drive that doesn't boot, right?

yea
I know what you're going to ask now
how can grub rescue start
:D
and I can't answer that question

kos
Yeah, looking at it that way it sounds paradoxical. :D

gonna reboot and try something real quick

So TestDisk is at 15%
After 8 hours

2:03 PM
Alright, this is getting weird.
@kos your initial thought was correct
I wasn't sure whether I checked if the disk is there on a cold or hot boot so I just checked again
It doesn't get recognized by my BIOS on cold boot, which explains why the partition can't be found
BUT it doesn't explain why there is a grub rescue

2:16 PM
@OctavianDamiean grub does not use the uuid.. would be an answer to fix that paradox >:)

I checked the generated grub.cfg and it does
the UUID there is correct, it just isn't available after cold boot

sounds like a hardware problem? maybe a bad connection?

it is consistently there after a hot reboot
it certainly is a hardware/bios thing
but where does the grub rescue shell come from if grub is installed on the device that isn't recognized? :D

kos
@OctavianDamiean Huh. That sounds like a motherboard issue. Try updating the BIOS?
@OctavianDamiean Hm. From another drive?

I'll start by switching to another SATA port first.
If the issue persists then it looks like a hard disk issue.

kos
2:23 PM
@OctavianDamiean Try also sudo dd if=/dev/sdX iflag=fullblock bs=512 count=1 2>/dev/null | strings on the other drives, if you have more than one. The GRUB rescue prompt could be coming from a leftover GRUB on the MBR of another drive.

what exactly will that do?

kos
It will print something like this if a GRUB instance is installed on the target drive (or print nothing otherwise):
% sudo dd if=/dev/sdb iflag=fullblock bs=512 count=1 2>/dev/null | strings

user136984
Though I got stuck getting my jumper off last night, nothing that bad has happened to me since the last time! :D

Alright, it seems to be the hard drive
It's the same behavior on different ports

kos
@OctavianDamiean Did this start to happen suddenly?

well, considering that I have two identical drives in the computer and only one of them shows this behavior, I guess it might be a faulty hard drive

3:04 PM
@OctavianDamiean can you format it?

technically yes, it would be a pain but yes
I'm just not sure what I'd gain from that.

kos
@OctavianDamiean Sounds like that's the case, though two different firmwares could make a difference I guess.

Same series.
I don't think they have a different firmware.

kos
Well just to be sure try sudo hdparm -I /dev/sdX and sudo hdparm -I /dev/sdY, I guess that won't hurt. If the firmware is the same yeah, you have a bad drive.

wew lad
even though I bought them together and they're from the same series they on different firmware versions

kos
3:26 PM
@OctavianDamiean There we go. Upgrading / downgrading one to the other's firmware should fix the thing (unless it's also bad, but in that case you just won the lottery).

Now to find out how that's done. Working on it.
Looks like it should be a downgrade
In fact, let's see if there isn't a newer firmware version, maybe it fixes that.
if not I can still downgrade I guess

kos
Honeslty I'd check whether I could downgrade first. I wouldn't want to be stuck with an incompatible upgraded firmware.

Oh good, my drive is so old that it doesn't even show up on the specs list for that drive line.
Uhm, welp

@Rinzwind Apropos watching, I just watched my first few episodes of your favourite TV series Doctor Who this week.

cool I saw every DW episode ever made incl. the 1960s episodes :D

They currently broadcast the 5th season on EinsFestival, a German station that belongs to the ARD.

ah. I hate dubs >:)

I started with episode 61 or so... The one where he invites the new girl with red hairs and where they have to bring back prisoner 0.
"dubs"? what's that?

dubbed ones?

6:12 PM
dubs are when they use the language of the country instead of the original language

I have seen a lot of dubbed movies.

Ah, sorry. Language problem... :) Now I understand.

If you aren't a native English speaker, surely you have heard or seen some of those dubbed films?

I'd like to watch it in English once as well, but I don't think they broadcast both audio channels... Will have to check that the next time.
Yeah, many dubbed films and series. I just did not know the word "dubbed" :)

Ah, righto.

6:15 PM
Problem is that I can only watch English films when they're broadcast in two languages on TV and the rest of my family isn't watching... Because they don't (want) to understand.

@ByteCommander luckily I live in Holland :D Only dubbing is for children shows and even then we sometimes have dual audio

user136984
100? 200?

user136984
Like a medium sized one...

user136984
Is 200 too much and would 100 do or...?

You can go up to 500.
So whatever you want.

user136984
@Seth: What do you think a reasonable one would be for this question then? :)

user136984
7:53 PM
Because I literally have no idea, I just feel 50 is very little...

If it were my question I'd start with 200.
I might know a way too..

@ParanoidPanda I do not believe it is possible.

user136984
Yeah, I think I'll give it a 200 bounty if it's not answered by Monday (because there aren't that many people on at the weekend so I feel that these two days would be wasted)...

user136984
@Rinzwind: Oh?

user136984
Why not?

7:56 PM
hmm, maybe I'll wait until Monday then :P

user136984
@Seth: Oh come on! :D

I would agree @Rinzwind and say it's impossible.

@ParanoidPanda Can you give me some example applications?

There's no way to restrict root, is it?

@ParanoidPanda the reading part is doable with encryption. but the executing part ... if the file is executable and I have root I will be able to execute it.
you might be able to --obscure-- the execution by putting some checks inside your software but that is not a good method. It makes it possible to bypass those checks by guessing.

8:00 PM
I think askubuntu.com/q/742503/367990 can be closed as dupe.

user136984
@Seth: I don't know, like if I installed an AV or something which had config files you wouldn't want another application to see... And perhaps also some executable files which if they were run by the user, or by another application incorrectly could cause some trouble...

that's true though, I doubt anything can stop a root process..

Look at it like this @ParanoidPanda even the guys that want to enforce DRM can't get it to work permenantly. Someone will hack his way through it.
I can throw in some pointers for an answer though :P

user136984
What about this part of what I said?

user136984
> And it's not only an issue with these applications, for instance I have some files owned by normal users which I only want certain applications to have access to though those applications are all run by the same user.

user136984
8:03 PM
Could that be doable?

You can restrict app A from app B if A is not root, but it is a lot trickier to prevent anything from touching app B.

question: is this software going to be spread around or is this just for your system?

You can hide stuff of one normal user from other normal users, but never from root (except using encryption).

The only way I can think might work would be to have app B run as its own user.

user136984
@Rinzwind: Just for my system at the moment.

8:05 PM
ok that makes it a LOT easier IF you can keep the root users in check
is the root user just you? or are there others

user136984
@ByteCommander: So if we just ignore the bit about root for the moment (maybe I'll even edit the root thing out of my question)...

user136984
@Rinzwind: It's only me on this machine...

user136984
No other users.

root will always be a problem. Thing is: root is suppose to be able to do anything with the system

Yeah. And everybody with physical access has the chance to become root. Remember my famous answer about securing a laptop against physical access?

8:08 PM
an example: you can use the immutable bit. can not be: Modified Deleted Renamed
No soft or hard link created by anyone including root user.
Only the root (superuser) or a process possessing the CAP_LINUX_IMMUTABLE capability can set or clear this attribute.
next: you can install the software on a external disk and password protect the mount

BUT root can't execute immutable files can it? It has to remove the immutable bit, which most bad apps won't be smart enough to do.

@Seth yes so you would create a piece of software that resets the immutable bit, locks the file from others during executing the software and reset the immutable bit

which isn't likely.

yes

I thought we agreed there was no stopping root? ;)

8:11 PM
see 21:05 @seth ;)
heck it would even be smart to enforce a PARTITION for that software. You can lock a partition such someone needs to format it to get rid of it

Can you? o.O

sure :+
encrypt it, and have it check the password online through 2 way authentication.
Itll take some time to break that :=D
wait I got something
@ParanoidPanda I know a way :+D
requires 2 computers though _O-

user136984
@Rinzwind: Why 2?

@ParanoidPanda so you can block root from accessing the 2nd computer and use that as verification that your software is the one asking for access.Works best if that other computer is on-line and not near the other one
still obscure though _O-

user136984
What about the thing with the immutable bit and the partition? Wouldn't that work?

8:24 PM
oh yes trying to make an answer
