@RPiAwesomeness I believe so, yes.

What's that search engine that will solve problems for you...
@Seth Okay

is that the wolfram alpha

Ah, thanks :)
Wait a minute...the 100th multiple of 16 ... that's 16 * 100 isn't it?

12:20 AM
@RPiAwesomeness can't we just clone him? then we can each have one?

@TheX Oo. Interesting idea. Let's ask @NathanOsman - I'm sure he'd love to help :)

@RPiAwesomeness I'll store mine in my basement with my original @RolanDixor
or whatever he calls himself these days...

@TheX RoliandXor?
I see.

Q: How to fix the error of "ls -la" output

Koorosh SadeghiI have been trying to change the color of my Ubuntu 14.04 prompt and I succeeded doing so. After using the answer on the post below, I could also manage to change the color of output: Customizing bash shell: Bold/color the command Yet after requesting ls -la command I receive the following error...

12:34 AM
is there a "What the? I don't even..." close reason?

lol, I wish sometimes

hi @hbdgaf how goes things
oh, and btw I bought and played axiom verge - awesome game - this one guy developed it himself over 5years

Fine-ish. Short weekend this week, long weekend next. At least they're finally letting us go overnight to get some things done that are in the 30 day late column.
@Mateo yeah, pirating a single developer game is dick mode.

yeah, I had a short weekend as well
or having rather

about 15-18 hours of weekend left. then it's in to work. get an extra half-day that feels like a whole day next week though.
in other news, one more week until the new season of hannibal. thinking about trying to make a "what special meat dish are you preparing for the season premier and finale" thing go viral. i want the show to live, and this is the yearly rotation point where shows come to die.

1:14 AM
looks like some good shows might start coming - saw a preview for a minority report series

i'll believe that one is good when i see it. i was impressed by the concept, but the movie was a stall for me.

m. night has "Wayward Pines" sortof like a current "The Prisoner" - so far the pacing seems too fast, unless they take it to the next level

wayward pines could make it. i think it was too soon too, but it could make it.

anyone watching the blackhawks game?

not a sports guy.

1:19 AM
@hbdgaf you have just been banned from my life :-P

you're welcome. it wouldn't have been productive anyway ;)

sorry to say this but I'm not either, unless it is to see italian calcio storico again

me neither

@Mateo I don't even know what that means...

it's a sport
calciostoricofiorentino.it/the_game.html - like a mix of soccer, football, wresteling, and carting people off the field without stopping the game

1:22 AM
It looks like the Italian version of professional wrestling mixed with gay gang rape...

i can't appreciate skill in most sports. basketball, there are these 7 foot tall guys that can dunk flat footed. american football there are 300lb freight trains that run in to each other. in soccer, rugby, or hockey, i can appreciate some level of skill. in most sports i can't.

@NathanOsman Just got into the section of the book with multiple #include statements. Whoooooaaaa boy.

and someone brought up hitler on the bridge...

Hey there is something to be said about hitting a 76mm ball that is coming at you at a 90mph rate or more with a 66mm bat

baseball is too slow. and before you say "that's the beauty of it" i've seen that travolta movie.

1:26 AM
@hbdgaf This is The Bridge we're talking about...

It is slow...but that is the beauty of it :-P
No the beauty of it is being able to pick the flowers and smelling them between plays :-P

I want to see balls getting hit, not swinging and missing

That hit them...that is the skill part...

@hbdgaf what does the movie have to do with it?

1:28 AM
watch it and remember me in the interrogation scene
I think the words were "No disrespect sir, but I find the game of baseball to be too slow."

lol...@hbdgaf I will have to see if I can find it somewhere...

sometimes you can find it in the $5 bucket at WM. other times you can find it somewhere else.

ill check amazon prime, and netflix

Q: off-topic question was first search result

stephenwadeI was searching for a Python question on Google ("python create file") and the first search result was this Ask Ubuntu question, which is closed as off-topic. The second result, from StackOverflow, had what I was looking for. Is there a way to discourage search engines from indexing closed quest...

3:28 AM
@RPiAwesomeness just picked up a 95 MB/s microSD card for my Pi. That should boost performance.

@NathanOsman Oh nice! What brand?

Lexar.

Cool!
Yeah, that'll help.

I noticed that the I/O LED was pretty much saturated when I was doing schroot builds.

So...mencoder isn't available on Ubuntu?

3:32 AM
avconv dude.
Does everything :P
@hbdgaf hockey is pretty entertaining to watch. Also, ping-pong (which also happens to be the one sport I'm good at).

gstreamer1.0-plugins-bad , gstreamer1.0-plugins-ugly, gstreamer1.0-libav and gstreamer1.0-fluendo-mp3 supports most common audio & videos and all are available on universe repository, then what is extra benefit/purpose of ubuntu-restricted-extras from multiverse?
in Unix and Linux, 10 mins ago, by Braiam
@Pandya its a meta package
in Unix and Linux, 9 mins ago, by Pandya
@Braiam If we install mentioned packages without going for ubuntu-restricted-extras, then Is there any requirement of that meta package?
in Unix and Linux, 7 mins ago, by Braiam
@Pandya search what's a meta package for, and you will understand what's the advantage
in Unix and Linux, 4 mins ago, by Pandya
@Braiam I've checked and found that flashplugin-installer, ttf-mscorefonts-installer and ttf-mscorefonts-installer are the advantage BUT If I'm talking for supporting most common audio & video files, then what?
Am I right that : for supporting MP3 and most common audio & video files, install gstreamer1.0-plugins-bad , gstreamer1.0-plugins-ugly, gstreamer1.0-libav and gstreamer1.0-fluendo-mp3. No need to install ubuntu-restricted-extras [only requires packages from Universe ; no Multiverse is required?]

Q: Why is Numlock turned off by default?

BenIs there a special reason why NUMLOCK is disabled/turned off by default? It feels like (when searching the internet) most users (including me) wants to enable it by default.

I am not complaining, but: in my eyes this is a classical case of "opinion based", isn't it?

I agree that without the answer it's a pretty lame question, but when you can see the answer - it's all "Wow. I didn't know some laptops made numpads on home keys. I always insist on buying something with a proper numpad"

@hbdgaf I agree the answer is insightful, but still (lame or not): none of us can know the reason, we only can (or cannot) express opinions about it. I guess why I posted it here is to get some input if my understandig of "opinion based" is flawed.

Well, if booting with it enabled would break some keyboards... then the answer isn't opinion based. The question seems opinion based without the answer. So, I totally understand what you meant. btw, I upvoted the answer to that one.

ok, thks

11:19 AM
I've recently visited this question. I've similar question : package mentioned in this post are free & open-source there seems no legal issue with them. Then Why they are not included by default?
should I post this as question on AU?

@Pandya possible patent issues?

12:57 PM
so I think Canonical has paid to include that

@Fabby Np, I'll accept it when I'll be sure that no plugin exists tough.
@A.B. Np
@ParanoidPanda It's about boot-repair, which runs on Ubuntu, so I can't see why it should be off-topic

user136984
But it is about Windows 7 is it not?

user136984
Oh, I don't know, never had to repair anything! :D

kos
3:39 PM
@ParanoidPanda The final scope is irrelevant, since the question is about an Ubuntu tool. Using Ubuntu itself has a scope which doesn't end in itself if you want ;)

user136984
Ok

Is there anyone running Windows 8 here?
If you do, could you check my answer here if you get the same results as me?
(Seems there is a way of making it work which none of the other answers have dug into)

kos
@Fabby I can't help to test, but according to this the comment on your answer is correct, by default that feature seems disabled: technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc959914.aspx

@kos yes, but that's just for updating the directory the actual file is in...
As the OP is asking about files and not directories, my system should work for him... (I just stumbled across this question as someone asked me yesterday to investigate a system which didn't have accounting enabled and I could answer his question with a dir %userprofile%\*.* > \temp\date.log and then ftp-ing Date.log to my system and then grepping for the (single) date he wanted...
And that answered his question...
Seems like there is some NIH syndrome going on at ServerFault...
I got some feed-back. Seems my system isn't reliable... I'll have to test next time I get my hands on a Windows system...

user136984

kos
@Fabby Sorry, I'm actually trying to give an opinion on something I don't really know, but I'm assuming the point of the comment (if this helps you spotting the issue) is that until you activate that feature no timestamp is going to be provided by your command, hence I'm assuming the poster is actually implying that both things are somehow related, otherwise his comment just doesn't make sense
@ParanoidPanda Done

Thanks for the feed-back, but as I've learnt before: if Micro$oft says something isn't possible, it sometimes can be done anyway... >:)
@ParanoidPanda done
@ParanoidPanda Now you need just one additional vote!

@Mateo gstreamer1.0-fluendo-mp3 is licensed under MIT. So, It is free software. BTW, Trisquel pre-installs that packages then is it paid (as you said "so I think Canonical has paid to include that") ?

@Fabby Actually no, he's talking about something else, so his comment doesn't imply anything, it's just saying it doesn't work afterwards, so nevermind what I said, can't help tough :|

@A.B. ah!

@ParanoidPanda what do these files contain?
and 0MB is still more then 1 KB... :P

lemme look again...
@ParanoidPanda Good enough?

user136984
@Fabby: Yes, but as it does not really even begin to answer my question about the doomed folder's purpose, I don't think that I can accept it.

@ParanoidPanda yeahh @ torodial

6:45 PM
ok

@ParanoidPanda I can't improve my answer: the files are cached files smaller then 1 MB so, in the case of the file you added, it replaced the other files, so no, you're not doomed...
The only way to get rid of them is not to use caching at all...
@Mudit what number in the tutorial are you talking about?
What version of Ubuntu are you using? What kernel version are you trying to compile?

yes

in 2012 that was :
2.6.38
now that is:
3.13.0-53
:P

so it can not be compiled

@A.B.: Let me log into admin user and try...
@Mudit not the 2.x version, no...

7:02 PM
@Fabby ok can I change the kernel name of the running kernel
@Fabby like ABC- 3.13.0-53

If you need help at that detail: please, don't bother...
Read the full sysadmin manual first then...

ok

apt-get -s install software-center
NOTE: This is only a simulation!
apt-get needs root privileges for real execution.
Keep also in mind that locking is deactivated,
so don't depend on the relevance to the real current situation!
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
software-center is already the newest version.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 5 not upgraded.
so I get an install candidate!

@Fabby Thanks for the help Sir ;)

Android M better not be Mint >:)

7:07 PM
@Seth :D
@Mudit Too much effort going to go into that question...
@Mudit I haven't even tried myself and I'm a 10K rep: that's something for 2016...

@Fabby yes lots of reading and research work :)

user136984
