Q: VPN Not working, PPtP

LandwardTree68today I was trying to set up a VPN. I have all the credentials and everything entered, but every time I try to connect, it says this. Here are the pictures for the steps I take to recreate this problem. http://gyazo.com/5f75424c29e7f043e222ceed44bd662b 1.gyazo com/c3458f88e7d78062225374c6ba0dc47...

that title ain't news bro

12:38 AM
I'm here because I like @Seth. You guys have 5 minutes to let it all out.

@JasonC Which comments in particular did you want from that other rooms back under the post?
There are 26 there..

Yeah, my flag kind of sucked, sorry. None now. I re-posted the one comment I wanted back there.

I can give you a screenshot if you want.
@JasonC Oh, well, in that case I guess it's all good then? :)

Yes it's all good. I realized after I raised the flag that the obvious thing to do was just put my one comment back. If I could have cancelled the flag, I would have.

No that's ok. Thanks for giving me a few minutes!

12:40 AM
Also I was kind of annoyed at that moment and being stupid.
Word. Thanks for reaching out. Ciao. (It's nice and orange in here, though.)

1:03 AM
@hbdgaf this is the one my bot gets stuck on ---^
(The original puzzle had even fewer numbers but the bot figured some of them out.)

2:03 AM
@NathanOsman I solved another number.

Q: How to know which platform I am using in lubuntu, ubuntu or kubuntu

Zhuodi LiaoI need switch script in between lubuntu, ubuntu, and kubuntu. How can I know which platform the script is running in?

@NathanOsman that one stucks mine too.

hi
i am using xubuntu with optimus VGA
but suddenly blower is not working

@NathanOsman what about "freeze restore point, number with lowest number of possible slots just guess and work the problem. if you solve it - winning - if you don't you have a restore point to try the other guesses - if you solve it - winning - if you don't try the next number guessing"
an alternate approach would be "which guess removes the most possibilities - try that one"
my and your logic should both solve the bottom left three though... that's weird.
o/ Mateo. You see what I mean about the three?

6:12 AM
Hi, so similar attack approach?

Our bots play the same ;) so I find myself in good company.

Almost done on an overnight...

Oh I have another three days to go on my weekend, but a conversation earlier was ... ominous.
read as: "What are they gonna do. We have a serial call out that nobody will address... and I'm earnestly not well from carrying the weight of 3 people for a year" - "I hope you feel better - and I'm coaching some people this week."

7:05 AM
Wonder if anyone has approached sudoku via big data - list out all possible grids, then preform matching via the known numbers

I like the linear solver approach, because it tells you to solve problems. Saying "Given set of blocks XYZ, here are all possible combinations. Just check for validity." That seems more like cheating.

Should be able to get instant as you type results with a indexing and auto completion system

Well, I guess precomputing a bunch of sudoku solutions and then instant matching would be a solution... and not REALLY cheating, but I'm pretty sure if I did that Nathan would tell me this. It's totally not fair.

It still would take a database of like 5 billion, and a nice way of organizing the data..

If you're going to go that route, then you have things organized as logic chains. So, there's a chain for knowing block one, block two, etc. That way you can say, "I know block one. Reduce by block five. Now reduce by block seven."

7:14 AM
It could also handle the ones that aren't as true and make you guess - which might have more than one solution

The only advantage there is that it returns both solutions I think.

Yeah
Something like - find grids with matching values for x squares

Someone touched on it already... the sudoku generator for Ubuntu main using a pattern-set instead of really generating them. So, after reducing them all to nil - each first block for the solver would be one. Not sure if that made any sense.
anyway, have to go back to that other thing. calling out for two thirds of a week is no small deal for me, so i have to treat it like quitting.

A: Running "Internet Download Manager" via wine crashes

skd-IHello to every lover of Intetnet Download Manager. Here is a GOOD NEWS I represent to all of you. Now,you can use IDM v5.05 (though old) as you people were using in Windows 7,8,8.1. With the best integration without 3rd party adddons like flashgot. You will also get the ability to to download...

I would say it is spam as he offers a link to kickass.to where he uploaded a self-hacked/cracked version of the IDM. What do you think? I flagged as spam!

@ByteCommander - comment given for the deletion - "answers about cracked and pirated software are not allowed as per site policy: meta.askubuntu.com/questions/13714/…;

@Toroidal Oh, you changed your icon? I did not recognize you! :) Nice panda...
@fossfreedom You already nuked it? Good, thanks.

user136984
@ByteCommander Thanks! :) I rather thought at first that it looked like Darth Vader, or at least a Storm Trooper, but Fabby seems to think that it looks like a "a fat girl hiding behind a picture of a panda"! :D :P

:D :D :D

user136984
@ByteCommander What do you think it looks like? :D

12:04 PM
Now we can open a real zoo in here...

user136984
:D

Erm... To me it just looks like a panda?

user136984

I am a wolf (more or less), you are a panda, RPi is a goat, Nathan and Mateo are penguins...
Who did I forget?

user136984
Someone even thought that it looked like a "sad panda"! :D :P

user136984
12:07 PM
It comes from this image:

FossFreedom is a mouse, hbdgaf looks kind of like a dog, Journeyman is a dog,...

user136984

user136984
:D

To me it looks more like a scared panda to be honest...

user136984
@ByteCommander I just think that the expression on its face is just really funny! :D

user136984
12:09 PM
I've got a collection of panda images like that so every so often I will change it to another one! :D :P

But not out of your spam collection? ;D

Q: How do I find a specific item in the review queue?

Carl HI've recently passed the landmark 500 rep and can now review selected types of posts. I've tentatively been through about half a dozen so far, and was happy enough with what I was doing (including one that came back with a message saying it was just a test, and I'd passed!). However, I reviewed...

user136984
@ByteCommander No, I can't remember where I found these pandas, but I don't think that most of them came to me through spam, although perhaps they did, for I cannot remember! ;D :P

Oohh... You still don't want to say where you get all this animal spam from?

user136984

@NathanOsman: As talked about here, what is Vcs-Git and what is Vcs-browser? And do I need them or can I just leave them commented out? :)

1:30 PM
ST3 users: Why doesn't control+click work for me like it did in ST2? I expect it to create a new cursor at my click location so I can multi-edit but no love. Selecting something and then Control+Ding still works.

No idea. I'm still on ST2 or Atom.

donno
that's why I am on ST2 at home
(werk has a ST3 licence, and its better than the other options)

@JourneymanGeek what do you like about ST3 that Atom doesn't do?
I like ST for large file support, but I haven't found it lacking anywhere else.

@hbdgaf: Its standard at work for tech guys
and most of the other stuff that's installed sucks in comparison, gedit, kate, vi and nano

Oh, I wasn't arguing. I was just wondering if there was another pitfall with atom I didn't know about.

1:40 PM
Seriously? Neither of you uses emacs or vim?
ST3 = sublime text 3 right?

yup
I like the ability to open a whole folder in tree view, and auto saving
Makes it really easy for me to keep things documented

@JourneymanGeek Both of which, as I'm sure you know, emacs and presumably vim can also do.
I guess it will be easier to configure in ST

Its by default on ST

The bonus with ST is you don't have to DO anything. It just works. The bonus with atom, is it's easier to snap in a ton of addons than it is to maintain a complex vimrc file... and emacs, well we all know what that's about with the butterfly effect and all.

Vim is standard I think
no one ever uses emacs
ST... does everything I want out of the box

1:45 PM
I did see a vimrc that made it a lot like ST though.

Problem I have with vim is that its modal.
I want to type. I don't want to have to switch into command mode to exit.
(nano's my second choice of what we have)

I don't see that as a problem as much as a habit change thing.
If I had to use a remote editor, it would probably be vim.

Oli
1:59 PM
@JourneymanGeek Your ST2 license works in ST3 until the final is released.

@Oli: I don't have a ST2 licence ._.

Oli
Ah right

I'm running a trial.
Work has a ST3 site licence ;p

@JourneymanGeek Pffft. Everyone does. :)

It's trivial to crack it anyway...

2:00 PM
No real point
I do intend to buy a copy at some point

I wish people wouldn't put nag screens in things and just have a splash-screen with a pledgie link. Might have better luck that way.

Oli
@terdon That's the impression you get from any sort of developer convention... But the barrier to entry is so damned high that I've just used what I know how to work in. ST2 made doing really cool stuff really easy (and easy to learn thanks to the Control+Shift+P super-dialogue).
I suspect that if I got into Vim/Emacs 10 years ago, I'd have a different point of view. (But now I have something that does everything with very little friction)

@hbdgaf: ST dosen't have a nag screen or a splash screen

@JourneymanGeek It certainly does have a nag screen.

0_0
It just says unregistered on the title bar
That's about as unobnoxious as it gets

2:03 PM
No. It pops a "This is the free version, you really should pay for it" dialogue every so often.

Oli
There used to be a ... yeah... one of those ^^^

@Oli Fair enough. I did get in more than 10 years ago. When I first learned how to code, those were the two options. Emacs had a GUI while the vim I had didn't and the whole modal thing really threw me off so I stuck with emacs.

Oli
Emacs has a GUI?

@Oli :)

2:06 PM
and now i know i'm not old. :)

Oli
Ouch. Stretching the G out a bit there.

@Oli I've just removed the icons. You can have icons if you like.

2:35 PM
@JourneymanGeek Your point being?

2:50 PM
Why do I have to watch editor cinema in here? ;)

Q: What is a '.orig.tar.xz' file in packaging?

ToroidalI have recently started packaging a bash script of mine into a .deb file so that I can upload it to my PPA, and I have noticed a lot of talk about a file which seems to have been created from my source code or something called <packagename>.orig.tar.xz (<packagename> replaced by the name of the p...

user136984

@Toroidal basically - dh --createorig zips up your source code. That's what this file is.

user136984
@fossfreedom But what is that file's purpose, what do I use it for and how do I use it?

user136984
2:58 PM
Because a lot of documentation says that I will have to do something with it, but I'm not fully clear on what it is and what I do with it.

you dont "use it" per se - its part of the packaging mechanism - when debianising it verifies that the source being compiled isnt different from the source "zip"

user136984
@fossfreedom So it's just there as part of a sort integrity check or something?

Shall I vote to delete an answer for Ubuntu 14 which does not really fit a 3 year old question about a bug in 11.04?

yes - lets say you've created that orig.tar.xz file. Then you modify one of the files in your source tree. Packaging will complain because the source files are different. That when you create a patch file in debian/patches
@ByteCommander seems like a nice generic answer - just title the answer with 14.04 - any other answer there probably can title with their version applicability.

user136984
@fossfreedom Ooooh, what's a patch file and how is that used? Is there any documentation that I can read on that?

3:07 PM
@fossfreedom Thanks. I wrote the version as headline.

debian packaging "applies" the patch file to the source being compiled. Its the sort of thing you see when you do a git diff

@ByteCommander How to control Insync via command line (CLI). Don't lose your temper. It's not constructive and I'm aware of all that. I want him to know about Insync because Insync has more features than Grive. If I wanted to dupe it to Grive, I'd dupe it to my own answer: askubuntu.com/questions/161273/…, but I think that lacexd wants better sync functionality than what Grive provides, so he can "just can pick a folder and sync it". — karel 2 mins ago
How should I react on that comment ^ ? I don't understand why he got upset.

Oli
3:27 PM
@ByteCommander Angrily. Start by overturning a table and throwing a chair.
It's probably the CAPS-exclamation being read as shouting. Next time try "I don't think this is a duplicate."
I have edited it that way (and will snaffle down karel's reply too). OP doesn't need drama in their comments section :)

@Oli ;D Thanks. Well, CAPS-ing one single word is faster than italize-ing to emphasize it... No need to feel upset.

Oli
Sure, I'm just saying that some people are going to read it as angry shouting. Written communication is occasionally a funny and annoying thing to get right sometimes.

Q: Achieve Manager like view of compressed files in Terminal

ToroidalIf I can, I will avoid using the GUI to get around my system, and recently what I have found very annoying is that I seem unable to view the contents and open the contents of a compressed file without decompressing like the GUI application Achieve Manager seems to manage to do, although I suspect...

user136984
:)

3:42 PM
@Toroidal You don't see animated gifs?

@Toroidal Don't you mean "Archive manager"?

user136984
@terdon I do usually, and I did see yours at first, but then it strangely disappeared and I wondered if you knew why... :(

@Toroidal Nope, I can still see it.

4:01 PM
@JourneymanGeek @terdon Terminator. /Iwin
@ByteCommander CAPS != italics.

@Seth Terminator? You mean the emulator? Yeah, my favorite as well.

@Seth Both emphasizes the word. CAPS a bit stronger than italics, but so what?

@ByteCommander No there are worlds of differences :)

@ByteCommander CAPS is considered shouting and rude. Best to avoid it.
Use italics or bold for emphasis.
user image
3
That might be a bit exaggerated but you get the idea.

@terdon okay... But it was one single word! Anyway, we already became friendly and removed our comments - no escalation. :)

4:12 PM
o/

@Mateo Stickers came today, thanks bro!

@ByteCommander I know, I'm just explaining why caps should be avoided.

@Mateo funny story, the LUG i'm a part of had a meeting yesterday and one of em stole the white domed sticker XD
@terdon Better idea: ban the capslock users.
problem solved.
there are times where capslock is needed (such as a case of variables, such as me referencing $WEBBROWSEROFCHOICE) but otherwise ban em all

@ThomasW. wat

@Seth exactly

4:18 PM
did you get it back?

nope, but i told them to return it or else
(since i have leeway with the guy controlling membership they can get kicked out)

That.. isn't good.
They should get kicked out regardless IMO.

indeed
they're gonna per the email i just sent off (ENCRYPTED)
(encryption ftw, all hail encryption)
oh on another note, Thunderbird's Enigmail plugin from upstream needs gpg2 or newer
so i had to go grab gpg2 :/
anyways, what've i missed
anything interesting

mm
Not that I know of :p
There was a ST vs emacs argument earlier.

Oli
I still have a puppy and he still likes food.

4:30 PM
How big is he now @Oli? Growing fast I'm sure :)

Oli
Yeah he keeps doubling in size.
Not sure exactly how tall (or how one even defines dog height) but he's ~10.5KG now.
He was about 5KG a month ago.
That's about 23 yards or whatever it is you use there.

Nice. You have a picture of it?

Wow that's really fast!
@Oli Pounds, actually. Can't say the system makes any sense though :p

Oli
@ByteCommander Yeah one second

@ByteCommander I think it would be a good idea to explain what I was trying to do with the Google Drive sync question. NGRhodes has already posted an answer to a Google Drive sync question here: askubuntu.com/questions/423166/… however the question was put on hold as a duplicate, wrongly in my opinion. I talked to him about reopening the question, but nothing came of it.
Now that NGRhodes has answered another Google Drive sync question, the problem seems to have solved itself.

4:36 PM
In other news Jorge just introduced me to lnav.. Pretty sweet little app there.

@Oli Oh, this is a real cutie! I would love it! :)

Beautiful @Oli! What breed is he?

@Oli ermegosh HE'S SO CUTE :D
I wants
For all those who were attempting (and creating Unicorn Giraffe things):

@karel Okay, then everything is fine now? Sorry if you felt upset by that single CAPSed word... I will avoid it in future, but that was really not a reason.

Oli
4:39 PM
@Seth He's a golden retriever.
He's got a fair way to grow yet. He's only ~15 weeks old.

@RPiAwesomeness added the finishing touches to the server.

@TheX Cool!

@ByteCommander Yes, everything is OK now that the "improved" Google Drive sync issue has been addressed.

@ThomasW. right off your laptop o_0
@TheX awesome

@Mateo If I would have known you lived so close I would have stopped and had a beer (or soda if you are not of legal age) I was at Medieval Times yesterday...
@RPiAwesomeness

Oli
4:46 PM
@TheX Errrm... They're the same.

@Oli look closer...

@Oli No. The Win sticker is replaced...

Oli
So it is.

I see it! Nice @TheX :D
@TheX Looks like you need to vacuum out the vent though!

@Seth I thought we were remarkably restrained. Hardly an argument at all, merely a civil discussion. About editors! What is the world coming to?

4:47 PM
@Seth Yeah it probably does... but it looks worse then it actually is because of the camera flash...

Oli
You're all wrong.
***FIGHT!!!***
Aww, formatting! Why do you forsake me nao?!

@terdon I couldn't help describing it as an argument :P

Well, as soon as "emacs" and "vim" are mentioned in the same sentence, that qualifies as an argument by definition.
Not sure about ST.

So I am debating..I can't decide if I want to install Windows 10, or Ubuntu on my SSD...

Oli
I'm sure most of us would suggest Windows ;)

4:51 PM
@TheX oh, medieval times, cool place

O.o medical times?

:/ on my phone....

@Mateo no problem... I was a little nervous though...

@Toroidal thanks, I've been meaning to write a script to list archive contents for ages. Your question gave me the push I needed :)

user136984
@terdon You're welcome, nice script by the way! :)

4:57 PM
So if I install Ubuntu and I have 8 gigs of ram can I opt not to have a swap partition?

if you don't want to hibernate.

You have to have swap for hibernate?

that's my understanding..

@Seth why did you close this as a dupe? It is asking a general question about any archive format and CLI while the dupe target is specific to tgz files.
Archive manager can open any number of different formats.

@terdon !@#^#%@^$
you're right.
sigh.

4:59 PM
:)

my concern is the amount of read/writes the SSD wold experience with a swap partition...

@Seth but now I lost my 15 rep from having my answer accepted. Snif, snif WAIL!
Just kidding of course, merging is the way to go :)

WAIT
I just asked for it to be unmerged..
Make up your mind! :p
I thought you brought up a good point..

@Seth I hadn't realized you'd merged. I thought it had been closed as a dupe.

@terdon gotta close before you can merge.

5:02 PM
They're not dupes so that would be wrong. Merging is not ideal since they're not 100% dupes but at least all answers are still there.
@Seth Yeah, I must have checked while you were in the middle of it.
Dunno, I wouldn't have merged them but I don't think it's that big a deal.
Let's see if your request is heeded.

This presents a dilemma I have not encountered before.

I didn't even know unmerging was a thing.

Two questions almost identical except one is slightly narrower in scope than the other.. What is the best course of action? Broaden the older question? Reverse dupe? Hmm.

In general, I guess closing the specific one as a dupe of the broader one. On the other hand, the answers dealing with tar.gz only seem out of place in the general one.
While they're fine on the Q they were posted on.

naw they're not out of place. Perhaps they answerer only knew the answer for one archive type.
@terdon It requires the blood of a thousand views sacrificed to a CM. And then only sometimes is it possible.
4
Well ok, almost always possible.. but you get the idea.

5:08 PM
:)

Anyone else wanna chime in with this life altering decision?

I never new Robert was so bloodthirsty.
@Seth You know, I sometimes feel we get all worked up about this sort of thing and nobody cares but us mods. And then we do something innocuous and all hell breaks loose.

@terdon lol, I get the same feeling sometimes xD
@terdon haha.

@Seth I just made Avinash's question a bit broader (using tgz as an example only). That might be enough.

Feel free to mod powers unstar that. It just struck me funny.

5:17 PM
o/

o/ @Nathan

@terdon I was just going to do that. I think that is the better of the two options in this case.
\o @NathanOsman

@hbdgaf You won't find it so funny when its your blood being harvested.

I work at walmart. My blood is already being harvested for your funsies.

@Oli I had a similar problem with ST3 at work once... there was some package I added that was messing with the keyboard shortcuts.
I can't remember exactly what I did to restore the original behavior though.

5:21 PM
@hbdgaf You do?

@NathanOsman probably something like close the browser and rm -Rf ~/.sublime

Be sure to back up preferences before doing that :P

@terdon No, I walk around saying I work for the most horrific entity on the planet for no reason. Yes, I do.
in his best archer voice

Oli
@NathanOsman Hmm, yeah I started my ST3 career by installing about ninety plugins so I'll etcher-sketch it and start again at some point.

@Toroidal The first points to the location where your code can be checked out (link directly to the Git repository) and the second points to a location where users can view the code online.

5:23 PM
@Oli Your startup time must be awful.

Sublime starts pretty quickly.

Oli
@Seth Okay, you caught me exaggerating. I just mean I installed a lot of stuff I had in ST2 without looking or testing in between.

user136984
@NathanOsman Do I have to list those? Because they are all found by the homepage link which is to the git repository?

You don't have to, no.

@hbdgaf Ouch. As a techie at least?

5:25 PM
No. Sales floor in hardware. I'm not kidding. I'm that lazy.
Or other things, but let's call it lazy.

@hbdgaf Damn. Do you get good deals at least?

Not really.

:(

Oli
Road trip to cause mischief in @hbdgaf's department!
7

user136984
@NathanOsman So do I just leave them commented out if I don't want to add them there?

5:28 PM
No really, I do work in hardware,

@Toroidal This is in the control file right?

user136984
@NathanOsman Yes

speaking, who was it that was telling me about a nice intelliSense plugin for Python and Atom?

@Toroidal You can just remove the lines then.

@Seth probably me.

user136984
5:30 PM
@NathanOsman Ok, thanks! :)

@hbdgaf Any chance you remember what it's called?
I re-installed and forgot what plugins I had.

@Mateo No thank god, they took the other sticker on the sheet :/
but it's still theft
@Mateo crap resolution but this is what I did with the orange one:

looks nice!

covered the Dell logo completely and it doesn't clash much with the colors XD
(that's my setup on campus right now)
(taking up a 4 person table all by myself xD)
surprised me that many people knew what it was even though the entire campus is mostly Windows and Mac
but apparently there's quite a few *nix enthusiasts hiding xD

@Seth I'll check in a sec, but I'm making crepes right now.

5:42 PM
@hbdgaf ooh, crepes! Take your time. Enjoy!

well not really crepes, but youtube.com/watch?v=izysqFvM-po
screwed up the first two times. didn't want to burn them, but i wound up tearing them all up

@hbdgaf OMW that looks so yummy!

I'm not making it because I think it's going to make me puke.
Seriously though, I've found that about the right cook time for crepes is "ZOMG I'm GOING TO BURN THE SHIT OUT OF IT"

This is another incredibly hard recipe to get just right despite the relative simple ingredients...

It continues to amaze me how people still install releases like 13.04
