@RPiAwesomeness You were 16 or something like that, right? Why the heck are you interested in stock markets then??? o.0

@ByteCommander School project.
It's a contest in one of my classes.
We all get to "run a mutual fund".
I got on two weeks late, so that hurt me. Then, one of my initial stocks was Tesla, and they plummeted about $500-$700 from when I bought in - so that hurt me a lot. And then when the US stock market crashed a couple weeks ago I was too heavily invested in the tech industry and lost ~4k.
Never made it back into the green before this crash hit. :P
Game ends in a month. I'm tempted just to sell all of my holdings, wait till this seems to stabilize a bit, then hop back in. :P

ok everyone - here is my sister folding a unicorn:

@Mateo Wow! Is that video pitched to about 1.5x speed or does ahe really have such fast fingers?

yeah, something weird happened, it is fast for the first few steps...

I'm afraid I have to figure out how to play it with 0.1x speed to be able to follow her... :)

5:33 PM
I'll try to fix it...
arg, it freezes too...

user136984
@ByteCommander It says unregistered next to his username of his profile, so does that mean that he's gone now? But how come the account doesn't get deleted?

@Toroidal Huh? No idea... I think usually no profile gets deleted to keep the posts. But that one is definitely not worth it though. Ask a mod about that rather than me. ;)
@Mateo Yes, it stops at about 2:09 or so every time... :(

so, I deleted for now - got to fix it :(

user136984
@terdon: I see that a troll's profile now says unregistered next to their username on their profile, what does that mean?

5:55 PM
I don't see any unregistered user ;)
@Toroidal Basically you are allowed to post answers without creating a full account. You just need to input a username and email (except no one verifies the email).
You have to create an account to post questions.

@Seth Oh, right, the account seems to have been deleted now, but SmokeDetector said something about it here.

user136984
What exactly is an SSH key and why do we have them?

SSH keys are used for encrypting secure shell sessions.

user136984
@NathanOsman How would they be used when it comes to Subversion and Git repositories?

They are also useful as a form of authentication.

6:27 PM
You need one to work with Launchpad.
Speaking of that, someone told me I should move my packaging setup to vagrant.. I should look into doing that.

user136984
@Seth I've got one, I just don't know how to use it! :D :P

Well that depends on your... use case! :D

user136984
@Seth Well, I've got a subversion repository which says that I should give it my SSH key, but I am not sure how to give, and how this will be helpful to my repository.

user136984
I'm also confused about how to actually get my SSH key... :D

user136984
I generated one in Ubuntu, but not sure how to get it to my repository.

6:34 PM
hmm, I'm not really familiar with subversion..

user136984
Well, it's just a site which manages lots of these sorts of things, so this key would cover my git repos there too.

user136984
And any of the other repos I have there with other things...

user136984
@Seth Anyway, it is asking me for my Public SSH key, so how do I get that?

user136984
I generated a key pair in Ubuntu.

What steps did you follow to get the key pair?

6:37 PM
Your public key would be "~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub", assuming default settings.
Your private key would be "~/.ssh/id_rsa". Don't ever give this out to anyone.

user136984
@Seth I followed these instructions.

anyone here that has had something to do with "prince2"?
PRINCE2 (an acronym for PRojects IN Controlled Environments, version 2) is a project management methodology. The methodology encompasses the high level management, control and organisation of a project, but not lower level activities such as scheduling. PRINCE2 is also used to refer to the training and accreditation of authorised practitioners of the methodology who must undertake accredited qualifications to obtain certification. == History == PRINCE2 derives from an earlier method called PROMPT and from the PRINCE project-management method, which was initially developed in 1989 by the Central...

7:13 PM
@RPiAwesomeness Well, that post could almost appear in the "Late Answer" queue... ;D

@ByteCommander Eh, I was gone all morning and then when I got back I played (and won) a CS:GO Competitive match.

Do you have a special program that simulates your actions e.g. on the school server or do you have to calculate it manually and promise you didn't cheat?
What's CS:GO btw?

@ByteCommander We use a website - marketwatch.
Counter Strike: Global Offensive
Like CoD, but a bajillion times better
We won 16:5

hmm... I play far too less online games. CoD is Call of Duty, right?

@ByteCommander Indeed.

7:15 PM
Not that I ever saw a single minute of either of those games... :P

Good. If you're gonna play anything, start with CS:GO.
It's cheaper for one thing, has less cheaters, and is much more skill-based.
Plus, it's a PC game and doesn't require too much to run

not too much would have to be Ubuntu 14.10 with 2GB and 2x2GHz and software rendering... :P

You could probably handle it. You'd obviously have to crank it down quite a bit on the graphics, but not bad.

I was just downloading the minecraft demo yesterday and tried it (shocked that people would pay 20$ for it).

O.o
You don't like it?

7:19 PM
After a minute I thought I could have drawn the graphics faster by hand...

Hmmm....

And nicer, of course! I hated those huge-pixel blocky graphics since the first time I saw it.

It's a great game if you can play it
Anyways. Off to take yet another Econ test :P

Good luck!

@ByteCommander Yeah, sure, why not! :)

@Toroidal Really? I don't see ads...

cool
@Toroidal um.. adblock... another reason to use it ;)

@Toroidal Hey, they look pretty nice! ;) My brother would squeal of pleasure if I bought him one... He's mad for those! But I won't anyway, of course.

user136984
Yes, I just wasn't sure which was the official version for Chrome as there were many in the app store, so haven't got round it getting Adblock yet.

Raspberry Pi 2 is out of stock at Element14 :(

@NathanOsman looks like mcm has them

Yeah, but I have to be careful buying stuff over the border. I can get hit with either expensive shipping or import taxes... or even both.
Element14 has a Canadian store they ship directly from, so there's no surprises there.

ah

Once I was asked to pay over $40 for an item that was only worth about $100 or so.
The sender was able to call them up and get it straightened out, thankfully.

wow, so they are a bit different than here on that huh...

8:26 PM
The two companies here that I really like buying from are Amazon (almost always free shipping when you spend >$25) and Best Buy (they often charge for shipping but I live so close to their warehouse that packages usually arrive the next day).
That's about what I was going to pay Element14 and these guys have it in stock apparently.

}

user136984
@ByteCommander Well, I never thought that a try-catch block would be put around me! ;D :P

@muru Why killing? The exception gets catched so the program continues running. To kill him I would code System.exit();

@ByteCommander Ah, missed that. :D

Oh, stop. If Toroidal is just an object in the RL-universe, what would be killed by System.exit() then? Oops, better not try that...
Just do a Toroidal = null; then...

(or build your own)

8:59 PM
@Fabby I might assume that you have sent it by snail mail...

I run my own mail server.

How would I build my own?

postfix + dovecot + spamassassin
And if you want webmail, use Roundcube.

?+?+? Sorry, no experience with that at all...

Then don't attempt it.

9:01 PM
First of all, I would need a always-on server and there the problem already starts...

Running a mail server is not something you should do unless you fully understand the process.
And running one at home is even less recommended.

Tell that to Hillary rimshot

@NathanOsman How much is an account/month?

@Fabby I'm afraid I only run it for myself and family members.

@Fabby How are you doing?

I'm OK...
not much rep today...
@NathanOsman I should get back to run my own again...

@Fabby LOL ....
should i open some bounty?

@Fabby Me neither. I only need 39 more points to finally hit 2k, but I only got +4 today :P

:)

@ByteCommander You got more then me!
And heemayl is going to surpass me in a few months...

9:05 PM
@NathanOsman So I better stay with GMX turning into snail mail every now and then... At least until I can afford a VPS and have time to read about that.

@Fabby: Yeah..when i will be surpassing your current rep, your rep will be tripled then....

My history over the last 10 days is 4 37 51 97 24 4 101 35 24 37 - so why only 4 today as it starts to get interesting!?
If I hadn't spent that useless bounty, I could be already reviewing edits and LQ queue, but nooo....
Anybody wanting to have it? It's due in 15h...

@ByteCommander: you are doing great..you have enough for a member of only 2 months..i started answering after about a year or so....

9:15 PM
@ByteCommander you could tweak the thumbnailer code referenced by your relevant type that ignores a folder, but it's not a built-in. you'ld have to bolt-on.

Thanks, nice to hear... But I had nothing else to do the first few weeks, so it was pretty easy. But I also touched my first Ubuntu system last October...

@hbdgaf Can we discuss that in 10min or so, I have to leave quickly...

I'll be around, but it's not something I'm planning on doing(writing the thing).

@heemayl Naah... You're better then me!

9:39 PM
@hbdgaf I'm back and have read the article.

Basically, all I was saying was find the thing you need to change - and change it.

So you mean I should write a script that behaves like a thumbnailer, filters the paths I don't want out and passes the rest on to the actual thumbnailer?

Yes. At least that's what I'ld do.

Write that as answer and I'll push the 50 points over to you. I'll add another 25 as soon as I tested it! :)

That's a bit like cheating, since I didn't actually write the script, but I'll put it there and leave it to your discretion.

9:43 PM
Remember, it's wasted in 14h!

@Fabby: I know you kid a lot.. and that is a good one too :)

And you pointed me out how that thumbnailing works and how I cold intervene, so that's fine. The script is probably just a single line...

@heemayl I used AIX, Tru64 and HP-UX more then 15 years ago and only installed Ubuntu January 2014... :P

@Rinzwind OK, what was your first OS?

9:46 PM

You're a itolder then me...

@Fabby For me it was October 14, I think...

B-TOS?

nope

Unisys???

oh and I named that as a -server- OS

my 1st own PC was a 80386. Back in 93 or so.
I still have it in the basement

@Rinzwind I have one in my basement too! It runs Win 3.11 :D

My first PC I build it myself: drew the motherboard myself and etched it...

and I used to use a compaq notebook (also a 80386)

9:51 PM
@ByteCommander If you wind up figuring it out later, post the answer, and I'll just shift the bounty back to you on something else worthwhile you answered.

it had a docking station :D

I'm before that...
I sold my first computer for 500€

@hbdgaf Thanks for the offer! Let's see how I can do this...

I once paid 400 euro for 8Mb memory :P

to allow me to buy a 2500€ 80286 with 2MB of RAM and a 60GB Quantum hard disk and a VGA monitor...
It was the fastest PC at the Uni...

9:53 PM
cool

faster then 80386 as it used page-interleaved memory (0 waitstate)
But I needed to buy 2MB of memory to make that work...
