Just before the power went out, I was reading about resizing the root partition online.
But I lost the page when the power went out.

lol
Lookie here, your compiler does some absolutely insane things with the
spilling, including spilling a *constant*. For chrissake, that
compiler shouldn't have been allowed to graduate from kindergarten.
We're talking "sloth that was dropped on the head as a baby" level
retardation levels here:

We don't have many spiders that bite around here...

Another upvote? Seriously?
I wonder if the number of upvotes on my answer here signifies a bad design change...

@NathanOsman: What he says, I sometimes take seriously. How he says it...
But better his way than how stallman does things IMO

Linus is more pragmatic than Stallman

Power is restored.

@NathanOsman 1st world problem

Fair enough.

4:35 AM
This, my friends, is a wireless router:
3.2 Gbps? Yes, please!

You have an AC chip?

My phone does... I think. Yup, the Nexus 5 supports AC.
I need a good router like that one for three reasons. (1) I need gigabit ethernet (2) I need really good signal coverage since my existing router is having problems (3) support for wireless AC never hurt :)

I wish ours had some external antennas..

Every portable device in this house, as far as I know, supports wireless N. And since the apartment has nearly 20 access points within range, I need something that broadcasts on the 5GHz spectrum.
The 2.4 GHz channel is more crowded than the jam-packed train I ride home from work during rush hour :P

hehe, yeah that can be a problem.
Okay, this is weird.
Wow, it has a lot of good reviews though.

4:45 AM
For the record, I don't see a problem with configuring my router on a PC. Try entering 10 or 12 static IP addresses into the DHCP table using that touchscreen :P

@NathanOsman in my apartment building I can see just above 30

@Braiam Hang on, I'll count mine.

of course, not all at the same time

My phone is only seeing 10 right now. But there's usually about 20.

everyone's asleep

4:47 AM
They turn their routers off?? The horror! The humanity! The cheaper electric bill!

@NathanOsman hey, I pay one of the most expensive kW/h in the planet

I'm fortunate to live in a city with both (1) sort-of cheap electricity and (2) sustainable electricity (we get our power from three hydroelectric dams).
That's fairly uncommon in most of North America.
The price has gone up sharply though in recent years.

Hey, down here we've got a lot of renewable energy ;p
(down here == northwest US)

you are lucky enough to have by-form-of-generation based electricity rates, here is flat, doesn't matter if it comes from the oil based plants or dams

Solar panels FTW.

4:58 AM
that has it's own set of problems (aka. hurricanes and thieves)

5:19 AM
i want to get solar panels eventually. i'm only on a 15 AMP pull, so I could go completely off-grid fairly easily

@NathanOsman eh, Both my active routers are 5ghz capable
I have no 5ghz gear though ;p

We have crazy fast Internet at work and a crazy fast router.
I get download speeds >80 Mbps sometimes... on my phone.

My home internet is the fastest home internet available here, and walmart doesn't have an internet connection. They have their own satellite network instead of VPNs. Makes it awkward with some of the terminals though (e.g. you can't activate a windows box on site - so you get the "may be a victim of software piracy" problem)
Don't have the wireless interference problem though. Since it's a camper park, everyone is inside their own metal box. It acts like a sort of faraday cage.

lol
our internet is 100mbps local, 20mbps worldwide
(silly thing my ISP does)
My next ISP has only gigabit plans

Yeah... I'm out in the boonies. 10Mbps is the top of the spectrum unless you pay for a dedicated fiber line to the dslam.

5:36 AM
@hbdgaf: I THINK we have two fibres an apartment.
least the fiber connection box has a pair of em

Yes. When I said fiber line I meant a pair of light conductive wires.
All of the fiber gear I've ever seen used connections in pairs, so I consider one pair one drop/line

naw, mine's single fibre a connection I think

really? i've never seen half duplex fiber gear.

i no haz permission to see that picture

Hi.
I normally use CentOS. To save IPTables I use service iptables save. I also had a server with Ubuntu. I have heard that the rules for IPTables are stored in the cache. Is this correct?

the rules are always available somewhere. i'ld just google it. i don't run services that need to be firewalled as an alternate option >.>

I have Googled it, couldn't find anything useful though. There's no /etc/iptables or something.
Ty tho

I tend to run my iptables rules each reboot. I don't seem to recall there being an automagical way to do it.

@WilliamDavidEdwards you really googled it? first hit on my first search cyberciti.biz/faq/how-do-i-save-iptables-rules-or-settings

12:27 PM
@hbdgaf: eh, you're essentially loading a saved set of iptables rules each time.

yes. and the problem?

which is fairly different from the rh-estque way of doing things

parsing all the things and writing proprietary hard to compile tools isn't a win. it is, in point of fact, why i use ubuntu instead.

12:51 PM

it is fucking awesome
sit down and look at that responsiveness

i browsed through it and felt like this:

oh yeah, I was hoping a meme :D

@hbdgaf rotfl
You write that?

nope, found it on G+

that is by far, the site that got me the most :O face on my www life

3:18 PM
i haven't started taking it apart, but it's probably mostly prefetch cache-ing so there aren't any requests actually hitting the server through most of the page-load/animations

yeah, I didn't looked at anything on the background yet. Still opening to look at it and put that face.. then go away like "still unbelievable"

in other news, i got the mimetypes-list snap-in for python-magic working. getting it dynamically prettifying now to help the pep score (on 300 character line... yeah, no). after that, it's a pull request to apphup

300 chars on python, that sounds like a rebel code

it's just a huge dictionary definition so you can get a list of mime-types libmagic can return to you, since the lib doesn't let you access that data directly

Q: How can I view the actual amount of close votes

WilfI recently thought that I would have a look at the Close vote queue (since I usually never bother - I have been trying to have a go at the moment). When I was finished it looked like this: So I thought 'great!' - but doesn't this not include the ones I have already reviewed? So how can I ...

4:42 PM
@Lucio yes. yes we are...

@Seth actually, one of the selling points of the whole Linux experience is the workspaces, IMO, disabling them by default is just ridiculous

@Braiam I agree.

If workspace switching was bad, Russinovich wouldn't have made Desktops for Windows :)

That is one of the things that really makes Windows hard to use. No workspaces.
@hbdgaf Even sysinternals made one!

4:47 PM
sorry, I didn't realize it was called desktops.

It's fine.
Also, I'm one of the two stars on your "maybe it was a bad design decision" comment...

I have to be careful through, bugs can invade my desktop... literally

5:02 PM
Yay. Feature request bug against python-magic response complete with pull request. Maybe he'll take it. If not, I can just pip install it from github.

correct me if I'm wrong, but pip supports installing directly from git repositories, right?

that is correct sir. i still have to sort out doing it from a requirements file, but you certainly can straight from github

neat

totally. i do wonder about module search order and forcing a pip install to a venv of a module that clashes with something installed system wide if you're using --with-system-site-packages so you can hit pygi, but that is for another day...
sup @Mateo

@Seth windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/xp-downloads#2TC=powertoys does the virtural desktop manager work past xp?

5:31 PM
@mods, this user (askubuntu.com/users/105993/dschinn1001) just posted a couple of weird non-answers: askubuntu.com/a/503379/158442 askubuntu.com/a/503380/158442. Hacked account (considering the high rep)?

@Mateo the sysinternals one does, last update was in 2012, so 8 was out.
@muru thanks

ah, cool, saw his link after I proved that most my using windows stopped at xp ;)

@Mateo I'm not so fortunate ;p

@Seth welcome.

One of his screenshots shows it on vista, so it should work. I'll have to install it in 8 and see what happens.

5:40 PM
in unrelated news, my ashtray exploded friday night...

So I heard :/

Oh, I already dumped that data here... my bad.
I think about it every time I look where my ashtray is supposed to be. I don't shop on weekends though

@Seth still wish the search was put up front in 8, one click on the start thing then start typing (unity style) instead of click - drag from side - click search - click in search box

@Mateo Actually, you can just start typing from start.

@Mateo I imagine that's tedious with a mouse, but much more intuitive with a touchscreen.

5:44 PM
Although, IMO, search in Windows 8.1 isn't as good as 8 and 7.

@Seth hm... inresting. I guess never thought about that because I couldn't see it

So to search you just hit <super> and start typing.
@Mateo yeah, understandable.
@hbdgaf two finger swipe makes it easier, if your mouse/touchpad supports it. Otherwise, yeah, it can be a big pain.

like dragging up from the bottom to get all apps...

I'm relatively spoiled with my touchscreen laptop... but in all honesty I don't use it much (the touchscreen functionality).

i think that one didn't really work for the mouse, I just remember trying to do it on a touch screen, then tell someone over the phone how to do it with the mouse

5:49 PM
most of W8 UI "breakthrough" are about touch devices, mouse users are ugly duck of bunch

it's the same on most OS-es. they're all fighting to reach "cross-device convergence"

QUESTION: Does anyone else get or have you had this error from StackApplet when you select the Preferences menu? @NathanOsman?
Invalid authorization credentials supplied. Please click on the preferences menu item in the application to view this page.

I don't use stackapplet, so no.

hello

o/

I've been trying to resize my root partition, finally booted from a live cd but I still can't resize the partition even though I have 200GB of free space available

7:43 PM
So handle it... what's the problem? Where are you hanging up?

it's like there wasn't anymore space left
the root partition wont expand anymore than it's current size

no. check df. see if it automounts. umount it. extend it with gdisk or whatever

df?

if there's some small or intermediary partition in the way, again - handle it. just move it off disk, extend, and put it back when you're done. yes df.

which means?
Hang on there, I never did this before

7:46 PM

I'm using gparted from a GParted Live CD
isn't the partition already unmounted this way?

same problem. either it's in use or there's some intermediate partition in the way.
it's an either or problem, so whatever you're saying doesn't work - try the other one.

so the partition can still be mounted even if I don't start the os?

ubuntu likes magic mounts anything ubuntu derived might light magic mounts. i'm not doing it for you though. just read. it will work or it won't. keep trying the next thing.

how would you do it for me? that's physically impossible

7:51 PM
i'm beginning to get that it's probably not mounted and you're just saying "tell me keys to press". and i'm done talking. i've given you all reasonable pointers and your mucking about talking

@hbdgaf - But how I pronounce ur name?? o_O

@PervySage you don't

8:53 PM
Hello there ! I've just booted the latest ubuntu on my usb and in the software center, something is weird : when i select something its font turns white, on a white background ;.. how do I fix that ? (screenshot incoming)

9:07 PM
Also, the full screen option on videos makes the video too large for my screen :/
The problem stays on several different websites

Hmm maybe you should change your display options @Hippalectryon
And for the font issue it's surely just a bug

Let's look at the displays then

By the way do you have the latest graphics drivers?

Not sure, how do I check ?
I'm already at 1600x900

@Hippalectryon Try different display resolutions and see if the problem persists

9:15 PM
@Hakim Lowering the resolution makes the fullscreen less out of screen, but it's way uglier with that low res

@Hippalectryon What is the size of your screen?

17.3'' 16:9 @Hakim

@Hippalectryon Then your resolution should be 1920x1080, but it isn't in the displays option, so as I said you should update your drivers

@Hakim How do I do that ?

@Hippalectryon First which graphics card do you have?

9:20 PM
An emachine G640G
oh
Good question :P where do I see that on ubuntu ?

@Hippalectryon You don't need to, I already know: it's an ATI Radeon 5470 ;-)

Oh right
It is
I just realized it was written on a sticker :c

@Hippalectryon next time lspci | grep VGA
@Hippalectryon you using stable, right?

@Braiam I think so (i downloaded some iso on the ubuntu website with a link provided by a linux installer)
What should I do ?

@Hippalectryon IMO, everything should be working fine, and if it isn't, report a bug

9:31 PM
@Hippalectryon I had a similar problem here and it was all about updating the drivers, I think you'll find more help if you post it as a question

Any way to do it manually ?

2 hours later…

@hbdgaf Nothing worth mentioning. I've mostly been experimenting with installing/reinstalling so far.

@hbdgaf some awesome stuff going on, on your question

@Mateo the one on programmers? yeah. i don't think i've gotten that many stars on AU

@chaskes i need to play with an offline upgrade of my bsd-9 install on the newer laptop to 10 and see if drivers or network cards work
@Lucio I'm SO not touching the Israel vs Palestine discussion. I don't even talk about that in hushed tones in person. Someone is destined to get horribly upset no matter which side you take - even if you argue their points well.

@hbdgaf Well said. I was about to say something similar.

11:57 PM
@hbdgaf i was about to say it :P

it's a way to note ancillary or superfluous information that is relevant to the topic, but not a part of the conversation. this way, you note tangent data that can slide outside of the conversation bar and in to the general knowledge bar.
@Lucio sometimes you make me giggle a little
