Q: how to shutdown Linux at a specific datetime from terminal

oscarIt seems I can shutdown using sudo shutdown by specifying a time or minutes. Is there a way to specify datetime for shutdown?

almost there: pastebin.com/4hgv7kXN only a little further to go until you can dump an animated gif in to a plymouth theme...

can this get another unclear close vote? askubuntu.com/review/close/237272

2:01 AM
maybe it should be duped to the 12.x question for the time being until details other than "it's not 12.x" are added?

yeah, no, I prefer unclear since that Q lacks information. We should stop babysitting people duplicating stuff since it causes more problem than solutions @hbdgaf google.com/…

@Braiam i've seen that dork before.

btw, the duplicated was solved since OP had a issue with his "wireless keyboard", how do we know this OP has a wireless keyboard?

we don't, but the root of the problem could be using the microwave incessantly or any number of other things. it's probably wireless interference.

@hbdgaf nice!

2:11 AM
or could be he's typing the wrong password, or trying to connect to the wrong AP, or his wireless card having problems with WPA, or <put another reason here>

@terdon yeah. it was for a question here about plymouth not supporting animated gifs instead of pngs... to which my answer was "No. You can't". And Mateo suggested a five dollar app or whatever... so here we go.
Here's the "no you can't" askubuntu.com/questions/431547/…

@hbdgaf I saw what you did there, apt-get-like permission error

Good Morning!

It was not intentional. Maybe right people just think the same ;)

3:04 AM
I will hate this change. That's all I have to say. I agree with @MonicaCellio, this, like the recent closing changes (with regard to TL at least), was made to circumvent a problem, not fix it. That's not good. The 10k flag tool is quite useful on some of the medium sites, it really does help prioritize. I'm really sick of you removing whole features just because they don't work on SO. Stack Overflow is the exception, not the rule! — Seth 2 mins ago
bleh.
@Braiam /me thinks that might be a good idea, but removing the flag queue is a bad idea IMO.
They're trying to skip around problems again.

@Seth Do you actually use it? You're the first mod I've seen who really finds it useful.
Most of the others tend to be meh about it.
But I could hug you for that SO is the exception not the rule thing.

walks away

@terdon tbh it really isn't the most useful tool in the world, but it does help.

wait, is a guy kind of hug, right @terdon

@MinatoNamikaze Good Morning! No School Today?

3:09 AM
@Braiam what, men who have physical contact are gay? Where are you from again?

btw, there's a "how SE works" talk over the bridge, if you ever want to see?

I also think showing the 10k flag queue to the 10k users helps the site in other ways, it gives them a good bird eyes view of what happens on the site and I do find the invalid flags useful (not to mention it's easier to decide if 5 other 10/20k users also agree with you on a flag)
Anyway, got to run again. Like Shog suggested, I'll add an answer to that post later and link it here.

cool

@terdon meh, can't find the image now...
is a reference btw

@Braiam yeah, it sounds familiar actually. My favorite equivalent is in Spanish: "echemos unas pajitas sin mariconadas?"
Isn't from the Big Lebowski actually?
Not mine, yours

Q: How to use rsync to efficiently copy the files from machineB and machineC to machineA?

WebbyI am running my shell script on machineA which copies the files from machineB and machineC to machineA. If the file is not there in machineB, then it should be there in machineC for sure. So I will try to copy from machineB first, if it is not there in machineB then I will go to machineC to copy...

A: iTunesToRhythm code not working?

DanatelaYou should use ./ (current dir) prefix when you execute a script: cd /home/myname/Music/iTunesToRhythm-master/ ./iTunesToRhythm.py -w -a /path/to/iTunes\ Music\ Library.xml ~/.local/share/rhythmbox/rhythmdb.xml or ./iTunesToRhythm.py -w -a "/path/to/iTunes Music Library.xml" ~/.local/share/rh...

see the comments below ;)

9:10 AM
is it ok to ask questions in this room?
i have never used this feature

yep - fire away.

ok i am trying to use the iTunesToRhythm script which can be found here:
https://github.com/esalgado/iTunesToRhythm
seems pretty stright forward, but i am getting an error

iver@LALA-LAND:~/Music/iTunesToRhythm-master$ ./iTunesToRhythm.py -w -a /media/MEDIA 1/SOUNDS/I Tunes/lybrary.xml ~/.local/share/rhythmbox/rhythmdb.xml
Usage: iTunesToRhythm [options] <inputfile>|itunes|mysql|wmp <outputfile>|mysql|itunes|wmp

Options:
-h, --help show this help message and exit
-c, --confirm confirm every match
-w, --writechanges write changes to destination file
-a, --disambiguate prompt user to resolve ambiguities
-l, --fastandloose ignore differences in files name when a file size
input was : fiver@LALA-LAND:~/Music/iTunesToRhythm-master$ ./iTunesToRhythm.py -w -a /media/MEDIA 1/SOUNDS/I Tunes/lybrary.xml ~/.local/share/rhythmbox/rhythmdb.xml

you need to escape the spaces in your file paths

9:16 AM
escape?

yes put a \ in front of the spaces

or use double-quotes

or use " >:)

could you show me eg?
im so new!

./iTunesToRhythm.py -w -a /media/MEDIA\ 1/SOUNDS/I\ Tunes/Library.xml ~/.local/share/rhythmbox/rhythmdb.xml
or
./iTunesToRhythm.py -w -a "/media/MEDIA 1/SOUNDS/I Tunes/Library.xml" ~/.local/share/rhythmbox/rhythmdb.xml

9:17 AM
BTW lybrary.xml should be library.xml

gotcha! let me see if this works
ok

the space ends the parameters setting ;)
damn you fossy! nice one

Dan
@Seth Don't you think "Start with the tour" instead of "Help Center" is better? bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-community-website/+bug/1289929

by the way... that is in the answer @Danatela gave (?)

Danatela helped alot, but did not have that part

9:21 AM
hmm? yes (s)he does :=D Only thing wrong I see in it is the capital L. That needs to be library.xml @Danatela

@Rinzwind, I'm a man

hmm
iTunesToRhythm.py: error: you must supply a source and destination

@KalamalkaKid so provide it >:D

are you sure you have the source path correct? Remember - case sensitivity and all that.

damn it
it is Library.xml

9:26 AM
i cant figure this out
i have all paths set

if ls -l /media/MEDIA\ 1/SOUNDS/I\ Tunes/Library.xml returns a result and ls -l ~/.local/share/rhythmbox/rhythmdb.xml also returns a result then something is wrong with the script - suggest raise an issue on the github project

i cant handle this anymore
i jst wnat to load my itunes up, and this is jsut way too hard
i cant belive how hard ubuntu is for the easiet things i have to read for 3 hours, just to figure out
like how to add a home button
goodnight, thaks for your help.

@KalamalkaKid Ubuntu is not hard. It is different and you are not used to some things fossy and me take for granted ;-) (like Ubuntu being case sensitive (windows is not)) and how to look at errors (that windows hides from you)).
Just stick to it :D it took me 1/2 a year to get the hang of it all (and I had prior experience with xenix and unix :D )
and I do not know if you rememeber it yourself but windows did not come to you immediatly too. That will also have had you run around in circles

@KalamalkaKid, once you will have skills it will be easy

9:36 AM
its frustrating when develkopes dont do commonsense things like keep the home button and up button in the nautilus and people like me who are new spend 5 hours trying to figure that stuff out, just like this, i have wasted another 6-7 hours trying to figure out how to load a playlist file, which should be as easy as anything.
There are no straight answers for any of it online. Go google it yourself, you will see how ambiguous it is. There is NO media player for ubuntu that simply lets you import a XML file
thats redicujous
sorry i am nto aiming htis at you, please dont take it personally, but its jsut laugahble how counter intuitive so much of it is

developers are people too, they do things as they are enthusiastic to do

and to be honest i would rather be trying to figure this out again with someone here
than to type out my fruystrtions
I think i am in the menu now
i need to know what command to run
Usage: iTunesToRhythm [options] <inputfile>|itunes|mysql|wmp <outputfile>|mysql|itunes|wmp

Options:
-h, --help show this help message and exit
-c, --confirm confirm every match
-w, --writechanges write changes to destination file
-a, --disambiguate prompt user to resolve ambiguities
-l, --fastandloose ignore differences in files name when a file size
match is made against a single song. Will not
resolve multiple matches
--noplaycounts do not update play counts
never mind its still giving me the same error

Oli
@KalamalkaKid "an XML file" isn't a format, it's just a markup language that allows you to store all sorts of formats... And yes, there are lots of players that will import other libraries. Banshee and Amarok even have built-in imports for iTunes.

is there anyway someone could help me with this>
http://www.njamin.org/blog/tutorials/import-itunes-library-into-rhythmbox-ratings-and-playcounts-included-121.php
BANSHEE will not import XML

@KalamalkaKid - what is the results of my ls -l command I gave you above?

Oli
9:44 AM
@KalamalkaKid It's a listed feature.

1-will try that command in one sec
2- listed or not, if you try to import a file the only kind it will allow you is a song file
all other files are invisilble

Oli
Now you've made me install banshee.

lol sorry!
and return on that command was
-rw------- 1 fiver fiver 9726085 Mar 11 22:06 /media/MEDIA 1/SOUNDS/itunes/Library.xml
(quick note should i at some point rename my media drive so that there is no space in there? I could see that being annoying)

Oli

and? were you able to look for a file that was antying but a media file like XML file?
i can easily import my songs. i have already done that. I need my PLAYLISTS which are contained inside teh library XML file

9:52 AM
? just use the export playlists function in itunes as a m3u file and then import that in rhythmbox - just need to remember to change the windows paths to linux path names

i no longer have access to itunes. I left windows
for UBUNTU
is it safe to rename my main media drive (at this point its a fairly new intallation so Im not worried about anything that points to files) currently the name is MEDIA 1 and that space is going to cause headaches. Is it easy to rename?

should be easy - use something like gparted to do it - askubuntu.com/questions/276911/how-to-rename-partitions

Oli
@KalamalkaKid I've already removed Banshee now but apparently, yes... From the Import Playlist section.
But I have no experience of this, so I'm going to shut up.

sounds fairly interesting - might look at this sometime to create a rhythmbox plugin to do just this, if there isnt already something similar out there.

I saw this artilce and was excited, until I reazlied that I it still does nto support importaing the lybray.xml files, only playlist files
i cant believe there isnt someway to do this that is simple
could someone try to help me figure this one out?

http://www.njamin.org/blog/tutorials/import-itunes-library-into-rhythmbox-ratings-and-playcounts-included-121.php

Dan
10:07 AM
Did you try rhythmbox by the way?

yes, i am trying everything

That blog was written a number of years ago - its no longer relevant anymore since rhythmbox has moved on massively since then.

look at that link above
ya years ago makes it all the much more absurd that bothe apps havent figured this out yet haha
its 2014. it should be as east
easy *
anyways, look at that link.. I got this error when trying to run that mehtod:

i am getting notification of “Rhythmbox database defaults to ~/.gnome2/rhythmbox/rhythmdb.xml” and nothing happens. I have typed the follwing

perl transferratings.pl /media/MEDIA 1/SOUNDS/I Tunes/Library.xml /home/myname/.local/share/rhythmbox/rhythmboxdb.xml

remember - developers are people as well. Stuff doesnt get created unless someone has an interest and is willing to write stuff. Stuff doesnt get written out of thin-air.

Yep...
something is screwed up in this windows installation
Can't right click in explorer without crashing

10:11 AM
OMG it worked
OMG

congrats

thank you all so much for your patience and wisdom

@KalamalkaKid well done - please add an answer to your question - give as much detail as you can to what you tried and how you made stuff work. Thanks

wait haha
NO GO
the console read all my songs, but still no playlists arggg

10:13 AM
Reading input from /media/MEDIA 1/SOUNDS/itunes/Library.xml
detected Itunes library
Writing to output /home/fiver/.local/share/rhythmbox/rhythmdb.xml
detected Rhythm box library

then a bunch of songs with ratings & playcounts (which is what some people wanted to have exported)
USED?

I used that only once :P
I don't know if it still works

omg this thing i have been trying to do is only designed to transfer playcounts and ratings, nothing else hahaha.
it doesnt even do what i want!

Dan
@KalamalkaKid would this work? I can't test it myself since i don't have itunes

10:20 AM
computer doesn't do what you want it to do, it does what you ordered it to do

Dan
@Danatela Well I'm trying to order my computer to do what I want it do, it's not working!

@ Dan this seems to look promising, but there doesnt seem to be much doucmentation or instructions. Its hard for someone liek me who doenst know much about UBUNTU

@KalamalkaKid, just run it and it will show you the instructions

how do i run it?

> Then it can be launch simply by ./itunes2rhythm.py
you may post here the config file also

10:31 AM
jsut modified the config
# playlists with these names will be ignored during conversion.
ignoreList = ['Library',
'Music',
'Podcasts' ]

# Set equivalence to 'None' to reject entry
mediaTypeMapping = {
"AAC audio file" : "audio/x-aac",

}

driveMapping = {
"localhost/I:" : "/media/MEDIA 1/SOUNDS/itunes",
}

iLib=""/media/MEDIA 1/SOUNDS/itunes/Library.xml""

seems OK

ya, but now what do i do
how do i launch the script
?

./itunes2rhythm.py
from the directory it lies

how do i get the dir ready. i am typing CD
/media/MEDIA 1/SOUNDS
cd /media/MEDIA 1/SOUNDS
says no such dir when there is

escape the spaces

10:37 AM
can't have spaces in a cd ;)
do
cd /media/ME{TAB}
and let it autocomplete itself
then type
/SO{TAB}
@fossfreedom did braiam arrive at /dev/null yet? >:)

sudfiver@LALA-LAND:~$ cd /media/MEDIA 1/SOUNDS/itunes
bash: cd: /media/MEDIA: No such file or directory
fiver@LALA-LAND:~$ cd/media/MEDIA 1/SOUNDS/itunes
bash: cd/media/MEDIA: No such file or directory
fiver@LALA-LAND:~$

no the dir where script lies
you already set paths in config

doesnt matter right now
i cant get any DIR in the console
lets figure that out
type out exactly how you woudl naviagte to any folder in console
i was doing this all day today dont knwo why it isnt working now

cd /media/MEDIA\ 1/SOUNDS/itunes

this is the DIR

10:41 AM
@KalamalkaKid ok 3rd time: you can not have spaces in your directory when using cd.

/media/MEDIA 1/SOUNDS/itunes/itunes2rhythm-master
OH MEDIA 1

cd /media/MEDIA\ 1/SOUNDS/itunes/itunes2rhythm-master

please refer to the reply I posted above or read fossfreedoms comment about escaping it

yes yes yes
wait before i do this
before i start pointing all these song to a DIR.. i shoudl really change that drive letter
who easy is that to do ?

and you ranted about Ubuntu a while back but I have to say that you do not read what is posted. That to me seems to indicate Ubuntu is the probleme here.

10:43 AM
err drive name
i wnat to tak out the space

@KalamalkaKid drive letter is windows ....

yes i know, i meant drive name
how easy it is to renbame
its not my main drive with UBUNTU,m its a media drive

depends on what MEDIA 1 is
if it is a mountpoint you re-mount is with a sane name.

sorry i dont understand

but the again all you need to do is put a \ in front of the space. how hard can that be?

10:46 AM
its cumbversome
how do i rename the drive?
and will it take more than an hour to do that?
lol
sorry im going to chaneg the drive first, will let yuo know when i exectue that py file momentariliy
omg
this is jsut endless. im goign to bed thanks for yuor help

Dan

Would it be a good idea to install 14.04 as a fresh install when it is released? My installation has been the same sine 10.10 (My /home is on a separate partition, so I theoretically wouldn't lose anything)

@Dan that depends on you and if you are desperately need a cleanup and remove cruft. If it works - why bother - just backup what you have and then upgrade.

@Oli I found one of your old comment where you have said "When you want to challenge a password you just subject it to the same hashing algorithm and if the hashes match, the passwords are 99.9999999% likely to be the same." It's not 100%, does this mean that two passwords can have same hash?

Dan
@AdityaPatil Yes

Oli
@AdityaPatil Sure.
I'm not sure how likely it is but you could run every [a-zA-Z0-9@_-+=!£$] combination for 1-10 characters through md5sum and then do a sort | uniq -c on that. Probably wouldn't even take that long on modern hardware.
(you might want to add a few more characters but I'd stop short of using everything... people are pretty boring)

Dan
@AdityaPatil this is an MD5 example of 2 blocks having the same hash mscs.dal.ca/~selinger/md5collision

@Oli I'll try that when I'll get access to tianhe1.
@dan @Oli thanks for the links

Q: How can I monitor CPU usage by user?

AmgadI need to monitor 2 servers' (Ubuntu and CentOS) CPU usage by users. For example: user1 5% user2 10% ... Is there a tool similar to top or htop that can do that? Thanks.

11:44 AM
So basically, once someone gets access to hash, it's just matter of time to reveal the input.

@AdityaPatil Yes. Unless it's salted.. then It's harder I suppose
@JourneymanGeek Can you please ping me on hangouts when you're around?\

Q: Android torrent client with remote access via browser and torrent time scheduler

UtkarshI'm looking for an advanced torrent client for Android with the following features: remote access via browser (I want to control my android box from my PC browser) torrent time scheduler (I want to specify in which hours the torrent must be downloaded) I've searched a lot, but all the torrent...

Great! but..
is vuze better than bittorent?

@Utkarsh define better.

12:36 PM
define?

It's the one I've always used and has more features than you can shake a stick at, it's also relatively heavy on resources
@Utkarsh yeah, better in terms of what?

Ah! Great App! I was using torrentx and it was a CRAP!
@terdon Torrent client also matter in the download speed of a torrent?

@Utkarsh no, not unless it's buggy
I guess some might have certain optimizations but by and large, the speed won't change

Hmmm Torrentx was soooo slow. Anyways, Great answer!
Thank You!
Uh! I think Journeyman Geek also wants to answer. Let's give him a chance.

Q: How to compile xbindkeys

Ionică BizăuI cloned the git repository of xbindkeys using: git clone git://git.sv.gnu.org/xbindkeys.git I want to compile it. How can I do this? Where can I find the compile instructions? What are the dependencies?

1:15 PM
@Utkarsh ip's are not a method to identify a person.

I caught the babaji spam again

True

@Rinzwind: Are you here?

@Aditya on occasion

chat never lets me in until I bash my head, join my hands and reload at least 5 to 10 times.

am working but so now and then I can peak into chat
@AdityaPatil I blame Seth :=)

@Rinzwind Oh sorry if I disturbed you..
Actually, I have got a lot more confused after reading the answers to that question of mine

two Aditya here?

I have sound turned of so I do not hear pings ;)

oh no

1:20 PM
@Utkarsh for now... there are more >:)

@Utkarsh :)

@Aditya why? it is so simple :=) directories not owned by user (or groups where user belongs to) will throw a permission denied.

@Rinzwind When we execute sudo apt-get update... the apt-get file residing at /usr/bin/ gets executed, right?

tes
-t +Y

Similarly, when we execute python, it is the one which is residing at /usr/bin/..

1:22 PM
hmm does not have to be

@Aditya do you get sound alert for replies to me? coz I get when they are replied to you.lol

depends on your path :=)
@AdityaPatil ROFL

But both of the files have same attributes and are owned by root
@AdityaPatil yup
@AdityaPatil not when someone puts your complete name

@Aditya so? >:) do mind that apt-get is probably included in sudoers file as an exception.

@Rinzwind Does exception in sudoers file mean it is compulsory to use sudo to use apt-get?
Because I do not need to be sudo to execute python

1:25 PM
@Rinzwind Oh! 57777 reputation? Great!

@Aditya no it means you do not have to supply a password.
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 2009-02-12 08:08 /usr/bin/python -> python2.5
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 141780 2012-06-15 14:43 /usr/bin/apt-get
see the difference @Aditya ?

Oli
@Braiam Yeah that won't compile because it's on paper.

@Braiam ok :D

@Oli darn C++

@Braiam do you not have to call main? (not a c expert though)
hmm seems not :D
@braiam add a using namespace std; after the include >:)

Oli
And use g++

1:33 PM
(since you use std in your code)

Oli

@Rinzwind Thanks... I guess confusion is clear.... We can still execute apt-get without using sudo.. That executes and shows us the help text... To run apt-get update/upgrade/whatever we need superuser permission... apt-get itself doesn't need superuser permission... Similar is the case with python.. We can use it and execute it without being sudo... Right?

After PONYSAURUS there won't be a world to greet, so enjoy it while it lasts.

@Aditya there are commands with apt-get that doesn't need sudo at all unix.stackexchange.com/a/115744/41104
download, source, changelog

@Braiam Thanks.. That is what is my understanding now :)

@Aditya yes mostly correct :) + what braiam says
@Braiam my addition worked on the hello world? >:)
@Utkarsh g++ would be google plus plus but in this case it is a compiler :P
the more interesting question is: how did they compile the 1st compiler? >:)

I've never talked to @jrg

Oli
@Rinzwind I could give you a really boring answer to that. It would send all of us to sleep and that might be dangerous (some of you might be operating cranes, driving ambulances or even running with scissors). For the sake of public health, let's just pretend that unicorns invented compilers.

@Oli coooooool unicorns <3
oh and they found the malaysian plane it seems

1:48 PM
@Rinzwind not confirmed

@MinatoNamikaze our newspaper thinks so >:)

@Rinzwind Where are you currently?

Oli
@Rinzwind The Aussies have just called off the search for the day though. So won't know anything for sure until at least tomorrow.

@Oli why is he removing messages?

Oli
1:52 PM
@Utkarsh Because Amith's been annoying us for a lot longer than you have. Through his contributions to chat, he has unofficially earnt the privilege to delete the occasional silly message. You'll note he hasn't deleted an entire page of messages, just the one. So pipe down.

@Utkarsh why do you not ask the person that deleted the message? I assume Oli can not read minds so...
LOL
weiiiiiiiiiird
I press f5 on frontpage. see a topic with "god" in it and it disappears :F

jrg
@Utkarsh There are a few reasons, some good, some so-so, why that hasn't happened.

Actually Babaji successfully advertises even though we delete his posts.Because they are always available on google search.search for babaji askubuntu and you can see his number everywhere.

hmm that should be ample notice so why is he still here? >:DDD

@Oli Not at all! I remember, You suspended me in that eve and that day, I not got any warning

jrg

@Utkarsh Calm down, or I won't be as nice as Oli and the rest. :P

niceness is prohibited on SE

Oli
@Utkarsh On the basis that I shouldn't need to explicitly ask to not be annoying every day.

for future reference I wont complain if you ban me Oli :=)

@Oli On 17 March, 8PM (IST) ago, I deleted one of my message which told about a wiki page about holi and then removed it beacuse i don't wanted to seed that off topic message in the transcript. then, second message i deleted because fossfreedom had changed the topic. They were just two! and you suspended me for 4 hours? I didn't got a warning even on that week too
