Q: What's wrong, Ask Ubuntu?: Low Voter Count

FEichingerLet me preface this with a run-down of the reputation system: Users on the site can cast up- and downvotes and accepting, each giving or taking reputation to other users and themselves. An upvote on an answer gives the answerer +10 reputation, an upvote on a question gives the asker +5 reputati...

Q: What's wrong, Ask Ubuntu?: Closures

FEichingerThe system for closing questions on an SE site is rather simple. There are various types of close reasons and votes, that fit in roughly three categories: Low Quality Posts The close reaons "unclear what you're asking", "primarily opinion-based" and "too broad" are intended for questions that, ...

Q: What's wrong, Ask Ubuntu?: The "Tech Support" Impression

FEichingerOver the last year in particular, Ask Ubuntu has made a great deal of advancements regarding its standing in the wider Ubuntu community. The prominent integration in the new Canonical topbar, as well as help texts and install slides telling users about Ask Ubuntu gives us the unique position of ...

There we go.

What the hell?!

Hm?

12:50 AM
@Lucio AU needs to tackle lots of problems to improve

Feel free to post your own opinions, ideas and suggestions on these meta Qs, that's what they're there for.
Fact of the matter is, AU is a mess and we're not fixing it by sitting idly by and watching it crumble under our feet.

1:19 AM
I actually wanted to make another one about our answered rate, but I can't quite wrap my head around what to do about that.
I mean, part of the problem is definitely that we don't close crap hard enough.
But we're also flat-out lacking answerers on a lot of topics now.

@Braiam I've seen that.

so no games on software rec?

Everyone still disagrees :-/
If you write it well I don't think many people will care.

@Mateo Well, if I'm not mistaken they're testing how well they work, right now.
But right now it's pretty much "experienced users saying 'Uh-oh, don't go there.'" vs the community upvoting "it's still software, so give us all teh game recs!" ...

1:37 AM
new question: Title: Suggest me all the games! Body: like the title says.

oh, maybe recommending "game engines" - that would be good for a game developer that could list certain needs
@FEichinger that is a good way of looking at it

@FEichinger that's a jewel

@Braiam Thank you very much! :P
@Mateo I could definitely see that work. Heck, I'd even ask one or two.

ekkkkkkkk! ~20 flags D:

1:42 AM
(But I'm not really active on that site, so ... not happening.)

anyone understand this answer? askubuntu.com/a/367675/169736

@Braiam Didn't format old partitions, so old files were leftover and messed around.
Probably had a leftover 64bit kernel that was loaded instead of the intended 32bit version, from what I can tell.

in making the usb?
the question wan't really clear where he saw the error...

Well, then close the question as unclear and stop caring about the answers. :P

sounds like a plan

1:51 AM
one of the main reasons I can't not be in the close queue as before is because I find crappy questions in the flag queues (a crappy answer is a possible indication of a crappy question)

So, are we gonna get primaries or not?
We're at 9 candidates right now, and two seem on the edge to withdrawing.

is there a certain number of people needed?
oh, 10 or less skips directly to election

Yep.
Which means we'd need two more candidates.
At the very least.

I bet there would be some last minute candidatures

The only last minute we had last time was Rick, who hasn't even been around since December.

2:03 AM
@thomasw. if you get around to cast a delete vote to this

@Braiam SO MANY DUPES UGH

@Takkat @Rinzwind if you get to cast delete votes askubuntu.com/q/146406/169736
@FEichinger yeh...
most of them are worthless...
can someone cast more downvotes to this askubuntu.com/q/146406/169736? in case nobody gets to cast delete votes

@FEichinger 11 moderators should be plenty IMO..
Oh nevermind. I misunderstood.

... Was about to say.

@FEichinger I'm very close to throwing my hat in.. Not quite 100% sure though.

2:10 AM
shrug

they won't put us into primaries though.

@Seth unless someone else signs up too

As of right now, we just need two more candidates to trigger primaries.

oh great. MS is going to rename skydrive to onedrive facepalm.
@FEichinger Throw your own hat in :P

they got sued...

2:12 AM
Yes, because they lost the lawsuit with Sky.

(not a good idea actually, if you don't really want the job, just saying.)
@Mateo oh?

@Seth The thing is, look at my meta Qs - those are almost all issues that cannot be resolved by moderators, no matter how you look at it.

someone thinks they own the sky...

Throwing more moderators at the site doesn't solve the problem.

@FEichinger no it doesn't.. you are the one that wants primaries. shrug.

2:14 AM
@FEichinger Working on some counter-rants

@Seth Never said I wanted primaries.

@FEichinger that's ridiculous. double facepalm

But the primaries allow for a first tally, which is always interesting.

well, like SE said, it isn't interesting if there are only 10 candidates.
@FEichinger You know, looking back over the last election, you actually made it pretty far.

hm, would be interesting without the primaries, wouldn't see any votes until it was all done

2:18 AM
@Seth Got through the primaries, came in 10th. Which, given the competition back then, was quite a lot, yeh.

very steep competition last year

can anyone tell me who the heck was thinking that is a good tag?

@Braiam (cringes)

Earliest instances of the tag being added I can find.

@Braiam done

2:26 AM
boot-repair , repair permissions? not really a good tag on it's own

Q: How to control remotely my Samsung Phone?

Vineet VermaI had a Windows OS earlier and could use Team Viewer to connect to my Samsung phone and execute actions. However that was not only very slow but also very slow in response. Is there any other way to sort of open an RDP session to the phone from my Ubuntu 13.10?

well that's when I said that I couldn't understand what I've read. I'm fairly weak on knowledge (and even language to be honest XD) ... so I just need to keep trying! okay thanks :D — Mina Michael 8 hours ago
when you can't understand a well through answer, is because you have a banana split, a screw driver and a quantum physics book and try to make spacial science

that is the point you just leave the sappiness alone and call it a day...

@Braiam Spatial science: Fill your tummy with the banana split.

2:41 AM
@searchfgold6789 You may have misunderstood the intention of my meta Qs a bit: These serve as a PSA/Call to Action, rather than posing an actual question. Any input on how to take action and what actions to take, however, is well-appreciated. ;)

@Rinzwind would be funny just to have unicode spaces in an application

@FEichinger Meta can DO that??? (Okay I see (; )

Meta is very different from the main site.
Meta can be used to report site bugs, discuss site policy, bring forth issues with the community as a whole, or just simply ask questions about the day-to-day and specific instances.

@FEichinger In other words, meta is hyperspace?! :D

Think of those three questions as one big, overarching one: "This is what's going on, now how do we fix it?"
The information I provide in those questions is usually how other sites handle that, and how the system intends it to be handled.

2:52 AM
Will a good 600-watt PSU be enough for a decent Radeon PCI-E card?

I appreciate your work and agree that we need an organized effort, which your questions on Meta have the potential to be,

If we find a better, or different, way to do that successfully, all the power to us.

Or do I need more like 750-watts?

@NathanOsman Yeah, My Hd5650's doing fine on 500
Or 5750

So 600 should be enough then.
...and still give me a bit of room for overclocking.

2:54 AM
How decent are we talking of a card? What's the cpu?
(I would say yes, unless you're going all out [6-core, dual fan gpu, etc.])

The CPU is a quad-core AMD A8 (I think).
Let me quickly confirm.
Yup, it's an A8-5600K. It's currently set to 3.6 GHz.
@searchfgold6789 I'm not terribly knowledgeable when it comes to Radeon GPUs. I spent the last few years with an Nvidia card.
Let me put it this way - suppose I was to spend $100-$150 on a video card. Would something in that price range likely be a problem with only 600-watts?

My A4 with the HD5750 is doing more than swimmingly with a 500. Keep it well cooled and everything and I'd assume 600 is quite comfortable. However I wish I could give you better informed advice, not having run your kind of setup before.

My case has very good airflow, so heating shouldn't be an issue.
I won't be doing what this guy did:
Yes, that's a 3.2 GHz Celeron CPU overclocked to 8.5 GHz.

That must have been a good, good time.

It was validated by CPU-Z, so... I guess it's legit.

3:05 AM
Must be Canadian. Just had to put the PC outside for cooling.

Funny... sort of... okay, maybe it was that cold last week.
But it isn't usually that cold up here.

(looks at the Pentium 3 and wonders if it could do 6Ghz...)

I'm sure mine could go to 4 GHz without even giving extra cooling a thought. The case is very well-ventilated.

Think global warming is caused by gas emissions? Think again: it's the overclockers.

3:09 AM
That's actually semi-plausible when you take all of the servers running 24/7 around the world into account.
Okay, not really. But please don't melt my habitat (I'm a penguin, remember).

@NathanOsman Actually they do probably take up some percantage of energy and emissions, including the manufacture... etc...

My Raspberry Pi putts along at under 1 watt so I'm doing my share :)

Hahaha nice x) the Pi is so awesome, wish I had one :D
(Also I congratulate you on your penguinity and bid everyone a good evening.)

Okay, one last screenshot:
160-core CPU anyone? 1 TB of RAM anyone?

How does one even wire that thing?

3:23 AM
I have no clue.

so 8 processors, each with 10 cores and 20 threads per processor

3:39 AM
@NathanOsman Is that real?

@Seth I think so - I think it was taken by Microsoft when they were testing Server 2012 or something.

@NathanOsman Wow.

I found a picture for a quad xenon board, still looking for a pic of a 8-cpu one
but found a 8-cpu amd box - so yeah they are out there

That's 4 cores + 4 extra threads, so not really 8 cores, but similar.

My screenshot had 8 actual processors not 8 cores.
In total it had 160 cores.

3:44 AM
I'm not sure Intel has 8 core processors.. but AMD doesn't have hyper-threading.

@NathanOsman 80 cores 160 threads

Ah, so not just 160 cores. That makes more sense.

That one has 4 physical CPUs.

4:07 AM

@xiaodongjie html tags/ markdown can be used to improve the clarity of a question or an answer. Like this: This test is bold. This text is italics. This text is enclosed by backtick characters to indicate a code block This text has a link in it.

So
I know about this.

@xiaodongjie In that case you already know more than many people who ask or answer questions here. Also try not to leave out any necessary information in your question/answer. i'm going to nominate myself on 1 hour before the nomination closes.So that i can get away from the comments.Is this idea good or bad.?
Just for fun -) lol :-)

5:51 PM
@AvinashRaj You will get the same questions in the primary phase what you would get in the nomination phase, but you will have less time to write a good reply to them. Also one of the first question will ask: "Why did you wait for the last hour with you nomination?" :)
So I don't think it is useful. If you want to nominate yourself, just go ahead.
LOL. I was wrong. I was just told that there is no more commenting in the primary phase. LOL.

@falconer no commenting on primary phase?

"In the primary phase, all nominees advance to preliminary community voting. Any community member with 150 reputation may vote in the primary.

There is no commenting in this phase, only one up or down vote per candidate. The candidate vote scores are all public. Initial voting should provide a rough sense of which candidates are most electable."

@Caleb Can you unfreeze this for me: chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/12673 please
Thanks :)

@falconer Bad idea unless you have something to hide. Comments should work in your favor if everything is as it should be.

@Caleb Yes, I think that too. But I think that the concept that commenting is only allowed in the nomination phase is bad.

We need a java or python application running over Ubuntu (no GUI needed) that will send a stealth SMS to the target cell phone via a USB GSM Modem.
Target phone should return at least Location area Code(LAC) and its Cell ID (CID)data and store that information in a mysql database table.
NO application to be installed on the target phone.
Now what do I do?

7:18 PM
@falconer I'm half way. No new comments should be allowed (the drama would be unbearable) but I think the comments should SHOW under the nominations until the start of finals.

@xiaodongjie Sounds like it would be a security issue TO have that be possible. Then again I don't know much about it
